“WHY'S EVERYTHING SO BLACK, TOOT?“(CONTENT WARNING: Although this movie was very good, we do have to warn you that it might not be for everyone. The subject matter is difficult and might be triggering for some, as it deals with domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide.)On this episode, we explore mid 90's New Zealand Maori cinema in the critically acclaimed Once Were Warriors, directed by Lee Tamahori. The film stars Rena Owen, Temuera Morrison, and Cliff Curtis, and it is based on the first entry of Alan Duff's book trilogy. We went into this movie blind, only really knowing Temuera Morrison from playing Jango/Boba Fett in Star Wars, and seeing Cliff Curtis show up everywhere from Avatar 2 to Training Day. We took it up after one of Austin's streamer friends RasNoMas, a native Hawaiian, recommended it to cover the podcast. The film was a huge hit in New Zealand when it was originally released in 1994, drawing more at the NZ box office than Jurassic Park! It was released to the states the following year, and almost 20 years later we both watched it for the first time. The film is about a Maori family living in Auckland, New Zealand. Jake, played by Temuera Morrison is at first very charming, but has a violently abusive side to him that terrorizes his whole family. Beth, played by Rena Owen, is trying to be there for her children but is slowly losing them one by one. Throughout the course of the film, we see the family take refuge in parts of the Maori heritage and culture. The great thing about watching films from different periods, from different parts of the world, and from different cultures, is that we get a good luck at what it's like to live in someone else's shoes. Once Were Warrior succeeds here, as it doesn't portray our characters as one dimensional archetypes, but as complex people brought to life by truly phenomenal acting. We hope you enjoy this episode!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Rena Owen is best known for her pivotal role as Beth Heke in Lee Tamahori's iconic film ‘Once Were Warriors' where her compelling performance earned her countless awards and nominations, locally and internationally. Since then, Rena has continued to excel in her career as an actress, producer & writer in film, television and theater, showcasing her versatility. Beyond her individual accomplishments, Rena has advocated for Māori representation in the entertainment industry, using her platform to raise awareness of the challenges, and support rangatahi - a testament to her talent, resilience and her unwavering commitment to using her influence for positive impact. But what were the foundations of Rena's success? What was going on behind the scenes of the acting career? We got to chat with Rena about her humble beginnings in Moerewa, an almost-medical career, a conviction decades old that still hinders her work opportunities, and her dreams for the future. This is her story. Indigenous 100 - Rena Owen
ONCE WERE WARRIORS (1994) is Lee Tamahori's adaptation of the first instalment of a powerful drama exploring the lives of the Māori Heke family. An unflinching and often brutal depiction of the effects of alcoholism, domestic violence and extreme poverty, Temuera Morrisson garnered critical acclaim and went on to become an international star but he is ably supported by Rena Owen, Cliff Curtis and especially Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell who delivers a moving performance as tragic eldest daughter Grace, in what turns out to have been her only big screen appearance. Morrisson of course went on to feature as a Fett - two in fact, as Peter reminds me - whereas Director Tamahori went on to direct the preposterous Nicolas Cage thriller NEXT, reviewed on this pod and much loved by all. Rena Owen is an absolute icon. From her break out role as Beth Heke in Once Were Warriors to a hugely successful Hollywood career – including being the only actress in history to work with legendary directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg – that's no mean feat! Rena's latest role is playing activist and community leader, Mother of the Nation, Dame Whina Cooper in the new film Whina. Rena Owen joined Francesca Rudkin. LISTEN ABOVE
Actor Rena Owen discusses her most challenging role to date, playing Dame Whina Cooper in the upcoming feature film, WhinaSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 1975, Dame Whina Cooper led a land march from Te Hāpua in the far north, to Parliament in Wellington, demanding action on the loss of Māori land. "Not one more acre" became the movement's rallying cry. From an initial group of 50, the hīkoi swelled to over 5000 people, and with them, they carried a petition of 60,000 signatures to deliver to Prime Minister Bill Rowling. It was a moment in Aotearoa's history that led to a significant breakthrough in Maori land rights. An iconic photo captured Dame Whina's first steps on her journey from Te Hapua, holding hands with her three-year-old granddaughter, Irenee Cooper. Now a new film called Whina is set to hit cinema screens on Wednesday - a biopic of the life of Te Whaea o Te Motu, the Mother of the Nation. Directed by James Napier Robertson and Paula Whetu Jones, it stars Rena Owen and Miriama McDowell as the trailblazing leader through her life. Kathryn speaks to Dame Whina's granddaughter Irenee, who is executive producer on the film.
The Director of Photography on the new film Whina, Leon Narbey, actually filmed the 1975 land march that the cast and crew were recreating for the movie about the Maori matriarch who led it. Leon was able to tap into both the documentary he worked on and his own memories of spending time with the protesters, to add authenticity to the film. Dame Whina Cooper campaigned tirelessly on behalf of her people and he was delighted to be able to revisit her story through being part of the Whina team. Leon's previous films include Whale Rider, The Orator, No. 2, Dean Spanley, and Illustrious Energy, which he directed in 1987. Fun fact : When he's not filming he's making award winning olive oil! He talks to Lynn Freeman about his feelings when he was invited to be DOP on Whina: Whina, starring Rena Owen and Miriama McDowell, goes into general release around the country on June 23.
Rena Owen has played everyone from Beth Heke in Once Were Warriors to Nee Alavar in Star Wars, but the actress says playing Dame Whina Cooper was one of the most challenging roles of her 30-plus year career.

Prince Harry is in a video released this week starring Rhys Darby, David Fane and Rena Owen. The premise is not that the destination we go to is rated on how green it is, but that we as tourists are rated on our carbon footprint whilst there. How do you rate yourself at present and how could you improve your score? Well first let's still talk about a NZ holiday. How do we get there? I'm afraid air travel is the most carbon burning option followed by driving. Driving gets an even worse rating if you are by yourself in the car without friends and family. So a lot of people in a vehicle is a much better option which is why bus or rail comes out on top. Unfortunately, it is not so convenient in NZ …yet. I loved the train journeys I've had overseas. Train tracks are much less obtrusive than roads and you end up in some remarkable situations, even looking into the locals backyards at times. Fascinating insights on local culture. So, what about electric? It is possible to rent electric cars now and yes, even electric camper vans. Because of our low carbon electricity in NZ. This option wins hands down. Go online and look for these options. Get a cheap second-hand Nissan Leaf with a small range for commuting and shopping from home. They are getting very cheap because the first ones have such a short range, but that's fine in a city where you can recharge at home or work. Then for your weekend adventures or holidays, hire. Now you have arrived at your destination, what's next? If you have arrived by plane, and if I'm going to Queenstown from my home in Northland, I'm going to fly, then when you arrive you have the option to hire an electric car. Or take the airport bus into town and do without a car. This is where bikes start to look good. You can get part day, full day or multi days deals. And those of us you think we may not be fit enough, there are now electric bikes. Reward the accommodation providers that are making a difference. There are independent environmental accreditations or certifications, like the Toitu programme, Qualmark EnviroGold rating, or EarthCheck certification. And in any accommodation * Hang up your towels – it's the universal sign that they don't need to be washed and you're happy to reuse them * Leave the ‘do not disturb' sign on the hotel door to reduce unnecessary washing of linen, vacuuming and the use of other chemicals for cleaning * Take your own toiletries (and toothbrush) to reduce the single use of those tiny hotel bottles of gunk * Use your own plastic free water bottle not the free single-use stuff LISTEN ABOVE

"I thought you only kill for survival- Aggression, plotting, revenge. You're more human than I realized.” — Helen to Donna [source: siren.wikia.com]Helen Hawkinsis a main character on Freeform's series, Siren. She is portrayed by Rena Owen.Helen is an antique shop owner and the local folklore expert. Since the resurfacing of mermaids in Bristol Cove, she has formed somewhat of a friendship with Ben Pownall and Maddie Bishop in order to help with Ryn and her sister Donna. She later reveals to Donna that she is a mermaid as well. [source: IMDb).Rena is an international award-winning actor and is one of only 6 actors in the world to have worked with both George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg during her illustrious career that spans 3 decades. One of 9 children, she was born and bred in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand to a Maori/Welsh Father and a European Mother. She was first published at 8 when she won a national children's poetry contest, and throughout her youth, Owen was active in the Maori Culture Club, High School Musical productions, and Community Stage Plays. Despite knowing her talents were in creativity, upon graduating, the Arts were not considered a viable career. At 18, she moved to Auckland to pursue a Nursing Career and 3 years later qualified as a General & Obstetric Nurse (RGN). In 1983, she went on her OE (overseas experience), a common Kiwi pursuit, and landed in London. Awed by the huge city and the bright lights of the entertainment world, the temptations that came with it easily seduced the naive 21 year old. But this life changing period led her back to a creative career. She trained at the Actors Institute of London in the mid-1980s. During her formative years she worked in all aspects of the Theater. The first stage play she wrote, The River That Ran Away was produced by Clean Break and directed by the reputable award winning British actress Ann Mitchell with Rena in the lead role. It enjoyed a successful London tour and was later published by NZ Playmarket (1991). Other UK highlights include, Voices from Prison for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and award winning play, Outside In that debuted at the Edinburgh Festival.Upon her return to NZ in 1989, Rena acted in two one-hour dramas for Television NZ's Series, E Tipu E Rea. A first of its' kind; the series was written, acted, directed and produced by Maori. In constant pursuit of learning and honing her craft, she continued to work extensively in theatre; acting, writing, directing, working as a dramaturgy, and was a founding member of Taki Rua Theatre. She wrote and recorded short stories for Radio NZ, wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed stage play, Daddy's Girl whilst playing reoccurring roles in two NZ TV Series, Betty's Bunch, and Shark in the Park. Rena was a rare recipient of a Dame Te Atairangikaahu (the Maori Queen) Literary Award & Scholarship.Rena's first feature film was a supporting role in the Kevin Reynolds/Kevin Costner film, Rapa Nui (1993), followed by the leading role in the cult-classic NZ film, Once Were Warriors. Her electrifying performance garnered her universal rave reviews. David Denby declared, "Owen's performance is classic!" Roger Ebert proclaimed, "You don't often see acting like this in the movies. The two leads bring the Academy Awards into perspective." Ruby Rich called her "The Bette Davis from Down Under", while Thelma Adams wrote, "Owen has the --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Jude from New Zealand shows some homeland pride by selecting the incendiary Kiwi film from 1994, "Once Were Warriors", for her commissioned podcast pick. Directed by Lee Tamahori and starring Temuera Morrison and Rena Owen, it features a soul destroying portrait of life for a Maori family living in the slums of Auckland. The picture pulls no punches, and yet manages to be thought provoking, sympathetic, and even uplifting and hopeful, assuming you calibrate your definition of "uplifting" and "hopeful" to David "The Wire" Simon settings. We simply are blown away by the performances of everyone in this film, particularly Morrison who plays the extremely charismatic, extremely violent Jake "the Muss", and are intrigued by the examination of domestic violence, crime, and racial issues as seen through the very distinct lens of New Zealand. An excellent choice, that I am glad I got to see. Good luck finding a copy of the film unfortunately. It's out of print and not streaming anywhere we could find in the States, although I'm sure an enterprising individual can find a copy here and there. Also I'm told it's currently streaming on Australian Netflix. Thanks again Jude, we're glad for your support.
