This week it gets lonely at night, as we live in a twilight world and there are no friends at dusk. We welcome Matt Pollock (Matty's Movie Burner) back to the program on the final Friday of the month to induct a new entry into the podcast canon: 2020's Tenet, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Martin Donovan, Dimple Kapadia, and former NHL super-pest Sean Avery. One of the few major theatrical releases of the COVID era, it was only just re-released to theaters to capitalize on Oppenheimer's Oscar momentum. But it's a polarizing movie to be sure. While the three of us love it a great deal, it is not a popular sentiment. We do our best to analyze why people put this undeniable gorgeous and visually inventive movie in the crosshairs, and if a critical re-appraisal is due. Plus it's not all Tenet talk, as Matty and J Mo combines for Theatrical Field Reports on Late Night with the Devil, Snack Shack and Love Lies Bleeding. Be forewarned: this is our longest episode ever, and you may want to watch the film before listening along. Unfortunately, at the time of publication, Tenet is currently unavailable for streaming in Canada, though, you know, you could check it out of the library if you're keen. Other works referenced in this episode include Wonka, Paddington, Paddington 2, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Licorice Pizza, Sex Drive, American Pie, Thirteen, Trainspotting, Kids, Heat, Superbad, Pineapple Express, The To-Do List, The Way Way Back, The Dark Knight, Early Edition, Prisoners, Dune: Part 1, S1m0ne, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part 1, The Holdovers, The Iron Claw, Dune: Part 2, The Fabelmans, Dazed and Confused, California Split, A History of Violence, Gone Baby Gone, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Footloose, X-Men '97, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Madame Web, Dune (1984), Arrival, Hot Rod, The Departed, The Invisible Man, In Bruges, Widows, Inception, 12 Monkeys, The Terminator, Looper, Dunkirk, Munich, Belfast, Love Actually..., A Haunting in Venice, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Interstellar, Good Time, High Life, The Lost City of Z, The Boy and the Heron, the Twilight saga, May-December, Station Eleven, Weeds, Insomnia, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Malcolm X, The Dark Knight Rises, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and Good Will Hunting among others. We'll be back next week to kick off April as we check back in with our old pal Tom Cruise and follow him over to Japan for 2003's The Last Samurai, a movie which is presently unavailable to stream in Canada but can be rented on Amazon and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Some may argue that Dimple Kapadia doesn't quite count as a superstar of Hindi cinema, but she's so interesting that we couldn't resist! Her appeal is a little harder to pin down than with the other women in our superstars series so far, and maybe that's her greatest strength. She's certainly the least filmi of the people we've focused on, despite having an incredibly filmi debut, but she makes up for it in...gravitas? This week we conclude (for now) our Christopher Nolan miniseries with his most recent film - Tenet! Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Kenneth Branagh, and Michael Caine, Tenet is a science fiction thriller action film that will bend your mind like a pretzel and dip it in butter. Following a man known only as The Protagonist as he plays the game to try and uncover a plot to end the world. Time moves forwards and backwards in this absolute masterpiece of a movie. But... In Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, starring Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Menon, and Angira Dhar, you'll be taken on a wild ride through the lives of three very different women. From the moment I started watching, I was hooked - this series is a scorching, scattered hot mess that will leave you flustered, frazzled, frustrated, confused, engrossed, and besotted, often all within a single episode.
We watched adaptations of Tagore's short story The Hungry Stones: the Bengali Kshudhita Pashan (1960, dir. Tapan Sinha) and the Hindi Lekin (1990, dir. Gulzar). While not as drastically different a pairing as Duvidha and Paheli, these two films create different worlds with the source material, a feat of creativity perhaps necessitated by the fact that Tagore left his story so unresolved. Strong casts, performances, music, production design, and overall artistic vision unite them. Apparently there is also a short film with yet a different setting—and very hungry stones. https://www.cufilmfest.arts.columbia.edu/2017-films/the-hungry-stones-khudito-pashan Share your thoughts in the comments! Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram is just a week away and the expectations are immense for the film starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil. The furor began in late 2020 when they released a teaser revealing the title accompanied by a sampling of one of the greatest title tracks by Ilaiyaraaja - Vikram from the film of the same name that released in 1986. The 1986 film was a mammoth effort in terms of scripting and production. A screenplay written by Kamal Haasan and writer/novelist Sujatha adapted from the latter's serialized story and directed by Rajashekar the making of Vikram is as much of a lore as its aftermath, influences and the new film it has spawned (though not a sequel). Vikram has Kamal Haasan as an intelligence agent playing the closest James Bond could come to Indian cinema back till that point (and after Jai Shankar in Tamil cinema). It also had Sathyaraj as the villain with Lissy, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan and Charuhasan completing a role call of who's who from different language industries. Guru aka Lazygeek joins us to talk about how Sujatha and Kamal Haasan met, their journey through cinema, their collaboration on Vikram, the production effort, how the film turned out and how it has aged. Joining him are Aditya and Anantha Participants Guru Aditya Anantha Edited by Ashoka

"Policy is to suppress" may be a tenet of Tenet, but it's anything but for Cinphomaniac. This week, Marcus and Dana invert their intuitions in order to demystify and illuminate Christopher Nolan's 2020 cipher of a movie, TENET, starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Dimple Kapadia, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. We breakdown time inversion, the most confusing set-pieces, what's a Temporal Pincer, the roles of causality, determinism, free will, compatibilism, anti-compatibilism, solipsism, objectivity, plus the ramifications of class, capitalism, global politics, climate disaster, Cold War history, and Imperial Superpowers on the themes of the film, as well as the 2020 pandemic release controversy, what's a Christopher Nolan-ism, the score & soundtrack, the IMAX presentation, and just why the hell the protagonist is known only as, literally, "The Protagonist." All that and even more. When in doubt - "don't try to understand it, feel it."
This week, we discuss the film Tenet, featuring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. Tenet was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. If you aren’t doing anything on Wednesday around 9 PM … Continue reading →

Dimple Kapadia with Hrishi K - Tenet by Hrishikesh Kannan
Episode 28 has the Tom, Marco and Will spinning around the world of Tenet, the latest epic from Christopher Nolan where time travel meets James Bond. Tom brings things back to earth with an Aussie whisky from Tasmania, the Nant Port Cask Highland Single Malt. Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh and famously is only available in cinemas. Rated PG-13
A Warner Bros. A Warner Bros. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast has taken its time, but we’ve finally arrived at the film that forever changed the Hindi film industry: 2001’s DIL CHAHTA HAI. Farhan Akhtar’s debut feature had a glitzy starcast: Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Preity Zinta, Ayub Khan, Sonali Kulkarni, Suhasini Mulay, and the by-now patented list of talented supporting actors. Everything from the costumes (super trendy at the time), to the dialogues (a stark departure from what the rest of Hindi filmdom sounded like), to cinematography (fresh and natural), to the music (still a bop), left an impact. It changed the trajectory of several careers and gave others an opportunity to showcase their talents in a way few Hindu films have been able to.

Christopher Nolanin ohjaama ja käsikirjoittama Tenet on yksi vuoden odotetuimmista elokuvista. Vakoiluelokuvan pääosia esittävät John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine ja Kenneth Branagh. Nolan on tunnettu todellisuuden rajat murtavista monimutkaisista tarinoista ja huimasta visuaalisuudesta, mutta miten yli hilseen elokuva saa mennä ennen kuin katsojan kokemus kärsii? Keskustelemassa on kosmologi Syksy Räsänen ja elokuvatoimittaja Matti Rämö. Lähetyksen juontaa Pauliina Grym.

Anyone for Tenet? In this one-off special episode, your Robby The Robot’s Waiting crew venture back to the cinema to watch Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller Tenet. Tenet stars John David Washington with Elizabeth Debicki, Robert Pattinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kenneth Branagh, Michael Caine, Himesh Patel and Dimple Kapadia, in an epic James Bond-like tale of secret agents tackling a billionaire’s doomsday plot… with added mind-frying time manipulation. It’s the biggest release of the year so far, bringing people back to movie theatres after the Covid-19 lockdown. It’s also destined to be one of the most talked about, thanks to its blockbuster set pieces and Nolan’s familiar narrative gymnastics – Tenet is a movie shouting out for geeky analysis. Critics Wendy Ide and Kate Muir take a deep dive into Tenet and the treatment of its female characters. The first blockbuster release since lockdown delivers an exciting, action-packed time-twisting spectacle that calls for us to (safely!) return to the big screen, but does it have a problem with women? Along with host Anna Smith, the critics explore the characters played by Elizabeth Debicki, Clémence Poésy and Dimple Kapadia, and consider them alongside Nolan’s past on-screen constructions of women. Listen now to find out the sinister meaning behind “fridging” and why you should watch Tenet twice. Beware of some moderate spoilers. The critics also refer to James Bond and Back to the Future, and mention Xavier Dolan’s Matthias & Maxime, Amy Seimetz’s She Dies Tomorrow, and Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth. Just wanted to send my love during what is a difficult time for all movie & Marvel lovers. The loss of Chadwick Boseman is tragic and has sent ripples across the world showing how far his reach as not only T'Challa but just as an amazing actor and human has gone. This is especially true for the black community who have suffered far too much loss and trauma this year. I hope that everyone who has been touched by this can find time to heal and remember him for the incredibly moving, intelligent and talented person that he was. This all being said, I would like to leave you with a question, what can we as a movie community do to ensure we allow Chadwick's legacy to live on? Much love boys!

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back for Episode 67 with Salman Khan’s DABANGG! Directed by Abhinav Kashyap, this 2010 movie co-starred Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan and introduced Sonakshi Sinha. For various unfortunate reasons, however, this movie has been back in the public eye of late - so we invited ace film critic and journalist Anna Vetticad (https://twitter.com/annavetticad) (visit her site here (http://annavetticadgoes2themovies.blogspot.com/) ) to discuss recent developments. Anna is also an author and has written *the* definitive deep dive into Salman Khan in addition to THE ADVENTURES OF AN INTREPID FILM CRITIC (available everywhere books are sold). Join us as we make our way through some messy times in Hindi cinema and discuss the phenomenon called Salman Khan.
