ABOUT STEPHAN MOCCIOStephan Moccio is an Oscar-nominated composer and a three-time Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer. His breakthrough came when fellow Canadian Celine Dion's recording of “A New Day Has Come” made history by topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for 21 weeks. Since then, Moccio has balanced his creative efforts between releasing his own projects and working behind the scenes writing for other artists. Every time I hit 'Record' to create the magic that brings you guys these episodes, I never fail to be grateful for that pivotal moment where I got to learn the ropes of what would become something I truly do enjoy - and that's the art of broadcasting. Turns out there's more to just sitting behind a mic and opening your mouth to say what's on your mind. This last particular detail was very much on my mind over the past few months. In this Age of Distraction that we're currently experiencing, I've noticed that certain things have become somewhat revolutionary: being yourself, speaking your truth and the consequences that come with that. I'm not kidding on this one. You hear a lot about authenticity and being vulnerable but I get the feeling that the revolutionaries of today are the ones who speak the uncomfortable truths. And I for one believe my my next guest has a very solid take on the matter. "Freeway" Frank Depalo was born and raised in Montreal, and went on to become a popular Canadian radio personality. Having worked in the industry from coast to coast over the last 30 years, he has hosted top radio shows, including the Canadian Top 20 Countdown, from Vancouver, to Toronto, to Calgary and back to his hometown of Montreal. In a surprising state of events however, after having helmed hosting duties along with co-host Natasha Gargiulo on Montreal's Virgin Radio morning show for close to 9 years, their services with the station were terminated and both Frank & Natasha were quite literally tossed out. As heartbreaking as it undoubtedly was, Frank has remained true to his passion for broadcasting and bringing his voice and expertise to serve in a newfound medium : podcasting. As the host of the incredible Drive By Podcast, Frank takes off the shackles of traditional radio and, in his own singular, warm and sometimes biting way, discusses topics and issues, some light, some tougher from a perspective that I believe people need to hear. On this episode, Frank and I have a quite open conversation about how to overcome adversity despite such a public setback, pivoting and reinventing yourself, the dark side of freedom of speech, the hypocrisy of the industry, always staying positive...and some much more. In early 1962 Canadians were searching for our own musical identity. It finally happened. A second generation Canadian of Italian lineage came roaring out of Port Arthur, Ontario. His name: Bobby Curtola. Bobby's managers Dyer and Basil Hurdon had taken the young singer to Nashville where arranger Bill Justis put the commercial touch to his voice and a Canadian star was born. Bobby possessed a fine clear voice and good looks. He was well mannered, soft spoken and every mother's idea of what a teenage idol should be. The material he sang was aimed directly at young girls. Bobby took the youth of the day by storm. He was the Justin Bieber of his time... without the tattoos! Through our exposure of his hits at C-FUN, KJR in Seattle picked up on the activity that he was generating in Vancouver. Through the airplay of KJR, Del-Fi Records in Los Angeles picked up the rights to his recordings for the U.S. market. Although Bobby had a whole series of hits in the Canadian market, only two made it on the U.S. charts. Those hits were "Fortune Teller" in May of 1962 and "Aladdin" in October of the same year. C-FUN put together a massive promotion for Bobby's first appearance in the city and allowed Vancouver teenagers to meet and greet their Canadian star at the Kitsilano Showboat. This outdoor stage was located in an amphitheatre right on the shore of one of Vancouver's beaches. The turnout for the C-FUN Good Guys' presentation of Bobby Curtola was so massive that he had to be brought in by boat to the back of the stage. It was an incredible evening in the Summer of '62. There was no doubt that the teenagers of the early sixties were looking for their own thing and they found it in part with Bobby Curtola. Bobby was the first Canadian to earn a gold record. Curtola had an incredible 31 consecutive pop singles in the Canadian Top 40, including a dozen Top 10s. He is a member of the Order of Canada. Four years after his death, Bobby Curtola was finally recognized for his contributions to pop music in Canada by the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in March 2020. Interview recorded at The Legends of Rock'n'Roll at EXPO86 in Vancouver. Bobby opened that night for Roy Orbison.
Starting his career on the streets, one passer-by at a time, Martin Kerr has built a devoted fanbase of thousands. Often compared to James Taylor and more recently Ed Sheeran (although that might have more to do with his ginger hair and charming English accent) Kerr's storytelling spans the whole spectrum of emotions. His powerful voice and songwriting have earned him high praise from legends like Sarah McLachlan and Bruce Cockburn. In 2017 he went from busking on street corners to selling out his first major theatre show, then opening for Sarah McLachlan at a 20,000 seat stadium, and landing his album in the Canadian Top 10. After a few years and thousands of songs written, Mike feels he is ‘Close’ to something special. ‘Close’, the first single off of Mike’s upcoming EP ‘You wrote these songs’, is already showing this to be true, already finding its way on to the Canadian Top 40 Mike joins the DTP to discuss what ‘Close’ means to him, how losing someone close to him drove his passion for music, what inspired him to transition from the saxophone to vocals, and how Mike continues to pay homage to the people and moments that inspired who he is on the upcoming EP ‘You Wrote these songs’.
Born and raised on a farm just north of Airdrie, Alberta, Mark Lorenz lived and breathed the country life. Learning to ride a horse and drive a tractor was an everyday activity. Mark’s parents raised and trained Pure Breed Morgan Horses. As a family they would tour across Western Canada and the United States showing. The highway was already calling Mark’s name… but it would take a few more years, and a dare for Mark to understand why… “When I was 17, some friends and I were shopping for a birthday present for a buddy that had everything. We were walking through a mall in Calgary, and came across a small recording studio. After some taunting, maybe even a couple of chicken calls, I ended up recording a song. And the rest is history.” After recording his first song, Mark was approached by the recording engineer and asked if he wanted to enter a local singing contest. “I wasn’t sure what to say… I said I didn’t know, but as usual my friends were there to talk me into it…” Mark won that singing contest. In 2006, Mark released his first full length album titled, “Black”. Mark wrote all but one song on this album. “Sweet Summer Nights” was the first single from “Black” to hit radio, and was followed up with three more singles that charted in the Canadian Top 100. In 2008, Mark began recording his second full length album, “Route 72”. The first single, “You Wreck Me”, co-written with Julian Austin, gained Mark Canadian and US radio plays. Four more singles would head to radio, followed by two music videos shot for “Like a Radio” and “Somewhere in Alberta”. He is currently writing for a new project scheduled for release in 2016.
