We had the pleasure of interviewing Lindsay Ell over Zoom video!Platinum-selling singer, songwriter and musician Lindsay Ell releases her most personal and inspired music to date with her eagerly awaited EP, love myself, out now via Universal Music Canada, the country's leading music company. The first project that Lindsay Ell has co-produced, love myself marks an artistic evolution in her sound and an awakening in her songwriting. Recorded in Brooklyn with producer Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers), love myself is a collection of emotive alt-pop songs that cut deep with their vulnerability. “This project feels so liberating and so free, like I'm finally connecting head and heart," shared Ell in an exclusive interview with People ahead of the release. Lauded for her songwriting, Ell explores themes of the human condition throughout the EP such as self-doubt, negative self-talk, resilience, and healing. “I've finally reached the point where I have been able to turn my pain into power – not letting it define who I am, but letting it fuel what I want to do and inspire the mark I want to make on the world,” she shares. Through the lens of Lindsay Ell's personal experiences, love myself expresses universal emotions and creates a sense of connection.love myself is the newest chapter in Lindsay Ell's decade-long career that boasts three #1 hit songs, a Platinum-certified single, and over 400 million streams. Ell is a CCMA Award winner with nominations from the CMA Awards, ACM Awards, CMT Awards, JUNO Awards, and over 20 CCMA Award nominations. A generational talent, Ell has always felt at home on stage. Beginning her touring career at age 10, Lindsay Ell has brought her electric live performance style to audiences across the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK with both her headlining tours and alongside artists such as Keith Urban, OneRepublic, and Maren Morris. Over the past year, Lindsay Ell has proudly assumed the role of lead guitarist on her childhood hero Shania Twain's “Come on Over” international tour and Las Vegas residency which continues into 2025. 2025 will also see Lindsay Ell return for her fourth consecutive season as the exuberantly warm-hearted host of Canada's highest-rated reality program Canada's Got Talent, which has earned her two consecutive Canadian Screen Award nominations. In addition to her multi-faceted talent, Lindsay Ell's philanthropy and advocacy have earned her prestigious recognition in both Canada and the US. Last month, she received the CCMA's Music Humanitarian Award in recognition of her work with her Make You Movement charitable fund, and was a guest speaker and panelist at the Clinton Global Initiative's 2024 Annual Meeting in New York City where she shared her story of recovery from an eating disorder. Jamie Fine's (@jamiefinemusic) music might be the only thing that's as lively as her personality. A proud open book, the Ottawa-born singer, songwriter, and artist is smart, talented, hilarious, and most of all honest. She's the kind of dynamic presence who inspires the rest of us to be a little bit louder, a tad more fearless, and just better all around. As a kid, Jamie gravitated towards music. It provided solace from bullying and moments when her family just didn't understand. In addition to listening to Black Eyed Peas, and Nickelback, she loved hip-hop, spinning old school J. Cole on repeat in between performing at multicultural shows in high school. She opted to attend culinary school instead of university and launched her own catering business upon graduating. Following a creative awakening, she chose to quit the business and pursue music full-time in 2017. She reached platinum heights in the duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, scoring a series of smashes in Canada. 2020 saw her step out solo and craft a signature style of her own. Now, she properly introduces herself on a series of singles and her forthcoming debut EP for Universal Music Canada, beginning with "Confessions." ——— Welcome to The Pal's Podcast hosted by George Boutsalis and Ricky Liorti. Preston Pablo channels a fresh perspective on R&B and pop through live instrumentation and eloquent songwriting. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer made his solo debut in high school with the single “OMO.” Right out of the gate, it eclipsed 648K Spotify streams. He continued to gain traction with a series of releases. Tapped for the compilation Bangers Only, Vol. 1, he linked up with fawlin and Chill Only for “Circles” [3.3 million Spotify streams] and SauceOnly and Zeegs for “When We Were Kids,” which racked up over 6 million Spotify streams. His single “One Sided” amassed 1.4 million Spotify streams as he joined forces with pablø for “She Tried It,” “Control,” and “Ideas.” On the heels of “Chargie,” Banger of the Day predicted, “we are expecting Preston to have another big year.” Along the way, Preston signed to Universal Music Canada as he honed what he describes as a “modern vintage” style. After racking up nearly 20 million streams independently, he draws a big sound out of small town roots on singles such as “Don't Break (My Soul)”, “Flowers Need Rain” and more to come. ----- Welcome to The Pal's Podcast hosted by George Boutsalis and Ricky Liorti. Well, no big deal. My next guest is Jann Arden; a multi-platinum award-winning singer, songwriter, actor, author, broadcaster, podcast host, and author with three decades of incredible work in music and comedy. As a good friend of mine noted, she is considered a 'Canadian treasure' by many. She is set to release her 15th studio album, Descendant this week on January 28, 2022, via Universal Music Canada. In this episode she speaks about her ups and downs in the spotlight, great colleagues like Allan Reid and Jeffrey Remedios, body image and so much more.Born and raised in Alberta, Arden catapulted onto the Canadian music scene in 1993 with her debut album, Time For Mercy, featuring the hit single, "I Would Die For You". A year later, with the follow-up album Living Under June, she would have her career breakout hit "Insensitive," which solidified her position in the music scene across Canada and beyond. To date, Arden has released 17 albums and achieved 19 top 10 singles. Her music is available to stream HERE. With accolades that include 19 top 10 singles, eight JUNO Awards and 10 SOCAN Awards, Arden is a beloved Canadian musical artist and personality. In 2020, she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame joining the ranks of Canadian music icons like Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams, Barenaked Ladies, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, RUSH, The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, and many more.A versatile artist, Arden co-created and stars as a fictionalized version of herself in the CTV Original Comedy Series JANN, available on CTV in Canada. The first two seasons are available via HULU in the U.S. Premiering in 2019, and the series was the most-watched new Canadian comedy series of the 2018-19 broadcast season. Season three wraps up with the last episode on November 15. The show features Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Elisha Cuthbert, Keshia Chanté and more. Arden has been involved in Workin' Moms, Wynonna Earp, Private Eyes and The Detour, she has previously appeared in sitcoms Ellen and Corner Gas. Arden has made guest appearances on CBC's Rick Mercer Report, as well as regularly appearing as a guest host on The Social. Arden also hosts an iHeartRadio original podcast called The Jann Arden Podcast, discussing everyday life challenges, triumphs, and tribulations. The Jann Arden Podcast is a fun-filled, relatable experience exploring what makes all humans authentically themselves with various special guests, including musicians, actors, politicians, writers, and athletes. Listen HERE. In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Arden is, of course, an author of note, peppering her words of wisdom with her signature humour. Arden has written five books, the most recent being her new memoir "IF I KNEW THEN: Finding Wisdom in Failure and Power in Aging," released in October 2020 via Random House Canada. IF I KNEW THEN follows Arden's 2017 Canadian bestseller, "FEEDING MY MOTHER: Comfort and Laughter in the Kitchen as My Mom Lives with Memory Loss," which spent a combined 44 weeks on The Globe and Mail bestseller lists. The new album Descendant is produced by Bob Rock, Russell Broom and Jann Arden. The 15-song collection represents the last 18 months of Arden's life and headspace. A bold, beautiful, and empowering sound of Jann Arden, Descendant signifies a return to form for the multifaceted artist, reflecting on where she came from and where she is headed. Women nominated to come on the Women in Media Podcast in this episode: Jody Vance, Wendy Williams Watt, and PRE-SAVE DESCENDANT AND LISTEN TO "STEADY ON" HEREA Note From Jann Arden:"This was one of the most organic, whimsical records I've ever written; all things considered, it could have been a wrestling match to make music at all. As the entire world has discovered, good things come out of bad things. We were all forced to strip down, reevaluate our lives and our jobs and our relationships. We were forced to think about what we really wanted and where we wanted to go. We thought about time and how precious it was and is. We baked, walked, thought, read, and watched our way into a big, altered state. We remade our lives and cast aside trivial unimportant things. All the songs on Descendant came out of a place of gratitude. Working again with Russell Broom after a lengthy separation was magical for both of us. Russell was working on amazing soundscapes in his studio, intimate grooves and textures that inspired me just to put it all out there. I also wrote two incredible songs with Darcy Phillips. Darcy arranged all the strings on this album, giving it such a dignified, distinct vibe. An ocean separated Bob Rock and me, but we managed to use technology to write together over thousands of miles. It was fast and furious, and I didn't have time to edit myself or second guess anything. So, this is a different record for me. Two producers, a pandemic, a lesson in my own personal history and looking at all of it through a kinder lens.We all come from a long line of incredibly strong people. Women, in particular, my ancestors, I am in debt to. I don't know how they survived being pioneers, constantly forging onward through impossible situations. It's all very heartbreaking. These songs are about who I am and what I'm made of. A new beginning to an old story."Descendant Tracklisting:UnbreakableI Belong To NobodyDescendantWas I Ever 13Steady OnMoonbowLoving You Is like A JobLove Will Be WaitingGood For NothingComing Back To YouHorse Country GirlHindsightPinkIn A MomentGlass Jar
We sat down with Universal Music Canada signee Savannah Re and the talented Yogi The Producer to discuss her new album "OPIA" with other conversations about creative process.
Samantha Pickard brings an international outlook to Strut and a vast understanding of the North American and Australian music and entertainment industries. As a thirty-two-year entertainment industry-veteran she contributes a diverse skill set through her years working as a retail buyer, artist manager, promotions and event manager, GM of an entertainment publishing company, in addition to her 15 years leading the public relations, marketing and event team at Strut Entertainment. The road to Canada began when Samantha took on a three-year role in Radio Promotions at Sydney based, Australian music industry trade magazine, The Music Network (TMN). When TMN partnered with Quebec-based music industry heavyweight, Donald Tarlton (aka Donald K Donald), to launch a Canadian version of TMN, The Canadian Music Network (CMN) in 2001, Samantha landed the role of General Manager and relocated to Toronto. Over a five-year span, CMN's in-house publishing arm took on the publication of the JUNO Award and Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards programs. In that time, Samantha also established the Canadian Entertainment Magazine to service the home entertainment business, the Canadian Entertainment Network Awards as well as an independent event-planning firm, Splash Event Management. Over fifteen years ago Samantha re-launched Splash under the name Strut Entertainment, with an eye to offering a degree of personal attention and customized service other, larger companies couldn't. Event planning is still part of the suite of services Strut provides but owing to the vast network of contacts Samantha has developed in the corporate world and entertainment industry, public relations, social media, marketing, and influencer services – for clients in the entertainment, music, and lifestyle industries – are the driving force of the business. Samantha has executed hundreds of public relations campaigns and events including G'Day Toronto for Tourism Australia, the Rolling Stones 50 Years Tour, Walk Off The Earth, the Taylor Swift Speak Now and RED campaigns, Lauv, Commander Chris Hadfield, The Weeknd, Rush, Hanson, Marianas Trench, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, Finneas, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jungle, Girl In Red, Jimmie Allen., Howie D and Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Fossil, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw, The Trews, Dita Von Teese, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, The Glorious Sons, Dan Mangan, The Tea Party, Blue Man Group, So You Think You Can Dance Canada, numerous campaigns for Warner Bros Canada, Gaiam, Universal Music Canada, CIMA, Anthem Entertainment Group, The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), New Balance Canada and Jabra. A former board member of CARAS (The JUNO Awards) and executive board member of CMAO, Samantha is also a sought-after guest speaker and mentor and has working with companies including Toronto's Centennial College, The SOCAN Foundation, Canadian Public Relations Society, MetalWorks, Music Publishers Canada, Rotmans Commerce Women in Business and for the Urban Music Association, she is also a long-term mentor for Canadas' Music incubator and founder of Strut Social.
On the podcast this week, Mike is joined for a frank and insightful conversation with Colette Chand, also known as DJ Coco Fresh, who is the founder of a new Toronto-based company called 10TH FLR. It brings together artist managers, grant writers and consultants to work with musicians from all genres — focusing on grant writing, artist back end, marketing plans, rollouts, and tours. Colette has had a diverse and fascinating journey within Canada's music industry over the last 10-plus years, beginning as a professional DJ in Vancouver and being mentored by DJ Starting from Scratch, to concert promotion, working with Universal Music Canada in promotions, and also specializing in grant writing, event promotion, artist management, and more. In this conversation, Colette shares her journey and lessons learned along the way, her mission for 10TH FLR, the key lessons independent artists need to learn quickly, the character traits that set the successful artists apart of the others, and a lot more.
On this week's show, Mike is thrilled to be sharing his entire conversation with Kardinal Offishall, which was had for the cover story in the most recently issue of Canadian Musician magazine. There are not many people you can speak to for over an hour and still be left with so much more you want to ask, but Kardi is that kind of person. Of course, he's one of Canada's pioneering rap stars, with global success that spans more than two decades and huge hits like “BaKardi Slang," “Dangerous,” and “Body Bounce,” but he is also carving out a unique and influential role on the business side of the industry as the Senior Vice President of A&R at Universal Music Canada, and a board member at ADVANCE, Canada's Black music business collective, chair of UMC's B.L.A.C.K. Label Coalition (BLC), and Canada's representative on Universal Music Group's Task Force for Meaningful Change. In this wide-ranging conversation, Kardi discusses his approach to A&R and his thoughts on music analytics, how he and The Circle crew hustled and paved the way for other Canadian rap artists internationally, how Randy Lennox convinced him to become a label executive, what “meaningful change” in the industry really looks like, and a lot more.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing BAD CHILD over Zoom video! After five years of writing, recording, and performing around the world, the Canadian artist known as BAD CHILD presents his comprehensive debut album Free Trial today via Capitol Records stateside along with 21 Entertainment and Universal Music Canada and Virgin Records in the UK. Listen to Free Trial HERE.Free Trial examines the distorted experience of creating human connection online and acknowledges the challenges that come with navigating emotional concepts through your phone. A concept album structured to feel like a satirical dating app, Free Trial is narrated by voice over clips that guide the listener through the phases of the record like phases of a relationship. The 19-track album features previously released songs and six brand new tracks including “$1,000,000.”Reflecting back on the album now, BAD CHILD puts the music into perspective and honors his early creative process, “I started writing ‘Free Trial’ as a reaction to how I saw people using each other in love and in business, especially online. Almost as if they were Free Trials. I felt a coldness and disconnect from those around me after the trauma I had experienced. This album to a degree was the beginning of my journey trying to understand myself. It’s neurotic and childish in some ways and extremely adult and empty in others. Five years of time passed while making this. I started when I was 18, I remember the summer was colored by Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde.’ I’ve turned into an adult since then. I’m turning 24 next month. This album in a lot of ways is my coming of age. I listen back to it and I feel like I’m listening to an experiment come alive. Its disregard for genre and technique makes me excited for the next chapters in this project. I feel like I’ve knocked down a barrier of my identity. At the end of the day when you hear this record, you’re starting your Free Trial of me.” Digging deeper into the tracks, BAD CHILD notes the importance of each song as building blocks that shaped his sound but also helped him to understand his early experiences of love, loss, intimacy, and anger. “The first song I ever wrote ‘BAD CHILD’ its auto filtered guitar and drum machine. I remember feeling free when I sang about my trauma and when people reacted to me saying it helped them, I knew I had to write more. Songs like ‘Rouge’ dive into the intimacy of becoming an adult and how love is violent and delicate. ‘Royalty’ is a song I want to scare people, it’s about wanting too much and becoming enveloped in greed. It’s very angry and NIN inspired it heavily.” Over the past three years, BAD CHILD has quietly been gathering momentum as an artist. In the summer of 2019, he released his thematic debut EP Sign Up. His song “Candy,” featuring Ryan Chambers, was included on the soundtrack for the highly publicized Netflix film, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. BAD CHILD spent the last year reflecting on the music that shaped him; releasing a COVERS EP that included his own interpretations on songs by Harry Styles, Bill Withers and Soundgarden. As well, he flexed the production side of his artistry, experimenting with new sounds and instruments on his own tracks and collaborations.BAD CHILD’s eccentric music and unique vision landed him on the festival circuit last summer playing some of the world’s most prestigious line ups including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Osheaga. Earlier this year, BAD CHILD was gearing up to join grandson and NoMBe as support for concerts across North America. Both tours have been postponed in light of the global situation. Kuné is billed as Canada’s Global Orchestra - a collection of 13 extremely talented musicians from various parts of the world who are now based in Canada and have united to weave a unique sonic tapestry. On this week's show, we're speaking with Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of Performing Arts with the Royal Conservatory and the pioneer of the Kuné project. Mervon tells us about how this special collection of artists first came together, the process of finding common ground in song selection and arrangement, and where things are headed following the upcoming release of the group's self-titled debut collection via Universal Music Canada.
Randy Lennox is the President of Bell Media, Canada's leading content creation company with assets in television, radio, out-of-home advertising, and digital media. Previously Lennox was the CEO of Universal Music Canada the country's largest music record label, where he signed and championed internationally renowned Canadian artists. In our podcast we discuss how Lennox, along with David Sonenberg, Michael Cohl and Tony Smith, produced Jim Steinman's Bat Out of Hell for the stage. Steinman's anthemic rock songs form the foundation of a magical stage experience that transports audiences to another world courtesy director, and multimedia-theater pioneer, Jay Scheib's use of musical theatre and opera traditions layered with alluring, multi-camera video projections. Bat Out of Hell is unlike anything that has come before it and Lennox addresses the risks, and rewards, associated with producing such an extravaganza. This Ep: Super Special Pursuit Guest Allan Reid - President & CEO - CARAS, The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts GA tries hard to act nonchalant and professional as he hosts this week's conversation with Allan Reid. Not only is he the President & CEO of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Music Counts charity & a "little" thing called The JUNO Awards [that's the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards for our non-Canadian friends!] but "AR" used to be THE A&R man ["Artists & repertoire"] at A&M Records [now Universal Music Canada] & was "instrumental" in the careers of artists such as Ashley MacIsaac, Hawksley Workman, Hedley, Sam Roberts, The Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer & more. He was also responsible for signing...you guessed it, Jann Arden, to a life changing record deal! Big deal...the real question is can this renaissance record man actually help us in the #RelentlessPursuit of Jann Arden? Listen for the answer to that question along with anecdotes about Jann, Johnny Reid, Gord Bamford & The JUNOS in this all new episode! Caution: Exceedingly uplifting & excellent episode. Listeners subject to bouts of euphoria & excitement. Musically speaking.
It's been awhile since anyone has heard from The Dears, at least formally, but band frontman Murray Lightburn joins us to talk about the group's upcoming release, Times Infinity Volume One, plus their 20 years together. We've also got Canadian country artist Wes Mack on the show. Fans might recognize him from his TV roles in Smallville and Heartland, but in addition to his screen appearances, Wes has been gaining popularity as an artist and is set to drop his debut LP, Edge of the Storm, through Universal Music Canada.
We're bringing you three interesting interviews on this week's show, including a pre-show chat with synth-rock duo and Peak Performance Project winners Dear Rouge plus catch-ups with Justin Evans of MixGenius and Ian MacKay of Re:Sound. After signing with Universal Music Canada earlier this fall, Dear Rouge are getting set to drop their debut full-length, Black to Gold, in early 2015. The band had a great 2014, as in addition to the signing, they commaded attention and earned a heap of new fans through their energetic performaces on club and festival stages alike. Also, Mike catches up with Ian MacKay, the President of Re:Sound. Re:Sound represents and safeguards the rights of its artist and record companies and ensures that they are fairly compensated for the broadcast and public performance of their music in Canada. Especially topical in this talk are MacKay's comments on the future of music streaming royalties in Canada. And finally, Justin Evans of MixGenius speaks with Mike about the incoming paradigm for music production. Services like MixGenius provide instant audio production tools to help musicians on a budget add some impact to their output. Find out more about the company and what these services might mean for the industry.
We're really glad to have Bahamas - aka Afie Jurvanen - on this week's show. Bahamas is set to release his third album, Bahamas is Afie, on August 18, 2014 via Universal Music Canada and Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records worldwide. The album title even is a big part of the story here - a symbol of Afie taking ownership of the name Bahamas. It’s a self titled record of sorts, that for lack of a better term is kind of a revealing moment in his career which has come with some high acclaim both here in Canada and the US and overseas. The music is expansive, thoughtful, full of huge catchy hooks that are at the same time beautiful and a really fun listen. He also unleashes some incredible guitar playing to boot. Be sure to keep an eye for that... We've also got an interview with Nathan Gill, frontman of Charlottetown rock outfit The North Lakes, talking about the band's in-the-works third release. They've had a busy summer, performing tracks from 2012's stellar Grand Prix at fests like Evolve and Big Red Music Festival. And on that note, we also catch up with Jeff Squires and Alex Douglas, two of the organizers behind Big Red Music Festival, which this year brought massive acts like The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Marianas Trench, Sam Roberts Band, and Lights to Canada's smallest province. Join us for a quick peek behind the scenes of yet another great Canadian music event.
JORDAN McINTOSH's 2013 singleGrew Up In A Country Song relies heavily on his own experiences and plays out like a series of lyrical snapshots from a classic country tune; all drawn from his memories of growing up in the rural community of Carleton Place. “In Country music every song tells a different story and I wanted to write something that paid respect to where I’m from.” Jordan is nominated for the Rising Star award at this year's Country Music Association of Ontario awards show which take place on May 26th. He'll also be performing at the awards show that night. Earlier this year, he was part of the Young Guns tour featuring Brett Kissell and One More Girl. He also has performances lined up at Manitoba’s Dauphin Country Fest, the Havelock Country Jamboree, PEI’s Cavendish Beach Music Festival and a return to Boots and Hearts in August. He's proud to be part of the CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association) Discovery Program. The mandate of the program is to create a national program to support country music artists to reach their potential by providing educational, mentorship, networking, and exposure opportunities. Jordan is signed to Big Star Recordings - the independent label run by Invictus Entertainment Group (Jim Cressman) and distributed by Universal Music Canada. His debut album with them - featuring the current single That Girl - is set for release in June 2014.
