Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! It's been a tough year for the MCU. Quite a few bombs, one or two hits, and let's not get started on the Disney+ shows. On this episode, I'm joined by Mani who's filling in for Duval and we're talkin' The Marvels - the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2019's Captain Marvel. In between that first outing for the interstellar warrior, we've seen the introduction of Monica Rambeau (Wandavision) and Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel), both Disney+ shows by the way, and this new adventure sees Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) team up with her fellow female heroes to whup some ass. But is the film any good? Check out the show to find out! On Anniversary Corner we look back at Thor 2: The Dark World (2013). And if that wasn't enough for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Thank you for supporting us and we hope you enjoy the show! 00:00 Intro 02:29 Shoutouts 04:51 Movie News 24:41 New on Streaming 31:16 New Trailers 50:41 Anniversary Corner 28:36 The Marvels review 52:04 Accused review 1:08:45 Outro
The Marvels brings everything you want in a comic book team-up movie to the table: far-reaching stakes, a dynamic ensemble – here a trio made up of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) – and high energy adventure rife with action-, tragedy, trauma-bonding, and hilarious shenanigans. It takes a certain eye when pulling the right elements of comic story mechanics and superhero tropes together to design a narrative that has both the emotional inconsistency integral to making room for humor and heartache and a willingness to embrace real but non-linear character development in the midst of what is obviously a universe-shifting mission. The Marvels broadens our understanding of both Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel's power level and Carol's emotional core. The scene-stealing Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel embodies the giddy delight (and danger) of meeting your heroes while also stepping boldly into your purpose. Captain Rambeau is simultaneously the smartest person in the room and an empathic woman coming to terms with her past even as she explores her own emerging superpowers. Anyone saying that director/co-writer Nia DaCosta is anything less than an inspired choice that paid off is lying to you, or perhaps basing their assessment of The Marvels on what they think should've been how second installment of Captain Marvels' journey unfolded or where they decided it was leading the MCU. For the rest of us, Nia DaCosta's The Marvels is a delightfully entertaining reminder that it's alright to laugh as hard as you cry because it's about the journey. Larson, Vellani, and Parris are a charismatic trio with exactly the right chemistry to anchor this highly watchable film. DaCosta rightly embraces their energy to present relatable, yet, distinct types, of women united in purpose but each with their own insecurities and strengths. In DaCosta's hands Danver's second outing brings her face-to-face with the fallout of her wartime actions. It's a savvy antidote to the heavy handed military-mindset of the first movie. The bloody-minded villain here, Kree Suprema Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), exists as a direct consequence of Carol's choices. Dar-Benn's quest for vengeance leads to the trio's powers becoming entangled and sets them all on a collision course. Ashton's performance is an ironic juxtaposition to Captain Marvel because her tunnel vision mirrors the more withdrawn Danvers before breaking her Kree chains. It's a cold intensity that's easy to overlook amongst the chaotic action and more outsized emotions of the other women. Some may read it as a weakness of the character design, but others will peep the sly commentary in their byplay. The Marvels lays groundwork for the way beneath the surface of these complex women (as well as the franchise). But don't expect the story to linger and dig into all the emotional turmoil and revelations. This is the beginning of the journey, and these women have layers. The pace is slightly uneven because a few gags linger overlong. It's not enough to detract but it makes it obvious how much more there is to be revealed. But The Marvels stays mission oriented and as this trio learns how to function as a cohesive unit - and gives some great close-quarters fight choreography - the details are in the dialogue. So don't fall out of sync with what's being said. DaCosta doesn't hide that there's a lot to unpack even as the plot worldbuilds. The story beats, however, make it clear it's not an accident we're not taking any of those side quests here. The character arcs for each member of the ensemble are complete (and leave you wanting more); allowing the overall narrative to stay on brand with this phase's theme: there's a reckoning for everyone in offing. The few glitches and hiccups in CGI make it clear that the franchise could still benefit from slowing down production timelimes but it's not enough to discount from the amazing visuals of space and the trans...

The Marvels Movie Review & Right Out Of The Theater Reaction for the MCU Phase 5 movie that brings us Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms Marvel (Iman Vellani), & Monica Rambeau from Wandavision (Teyonah Parris) together to fight Dar-Benn (another boring Kree character) whilst Goose the Flerkin Cat & Samuel L Jackson Nick Fury hot off of Secret Invasion make appearances in this movie & people will be hyped over the ending scene & post-credits scene - or mid credits but post-credits is the necessary key word people type in. Marvel Studios has been in disarray ever since Variety supposedly exposed them with troubles for Loki, Jonathan Majors Kang The Conqueror, & Blade drama...will this Nia Da Costa film she completely directed save the reputation of this Disney Franchise? Did that trailer featuring Iron Man & Captain America save this from being a box office bomb? The Marvels | MCU Nr. 33 gegen die Marvel-Müdigkeit? Rumors have surfaced that actor Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are potentially dating. The news sparked in January when an entertainment news channel called Deux Moi posted a breathless “new couple alert!” According to Glamour, sources claim that the rumored couple spent New Year's together in Aspen, possibly went on vacation to Turks and Caicos in January, and will be attending Coachella together later this month. Jenner, of course, split with her on and off boyfriend and the father of her two kids, Travis Scott, around the holidays last year. It seems that Nick Cannon may not be done thinking about having children, at least on the recent Howard Stern show. The host of the Masked Singer joked about who he'd most want to become the mother of his next baby — who would become his 13th child total — coming to the conclusion that Taylor Swift would be a perfect fit, according to Billboard. During the interview Stern asked, “Who would be the woman that'd make you have a baby again?” Cannon replied, “I'm not doing this. I can [already] see the headlines … I'm all in. First of all, she's an amazing songwriter. What I do love about Taylor Swift is the fact that she has been so vulnerable and open with all of her music since she was a young girl.” "Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown and actor Jake Bongiovi, the son of rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, appeared to announce their engagement on Tuesday, according to NBC News. Brown, 19, posted photos to her Instagram in black and white showing off a giant ring with the caption, "I've loved you three summers now, honey, I want 'em all," the British actor wrote on Instagram, apparently referencing Taylor Swift's "Lover." Bongiovi, 20, posted something similar to his Instagram with the caption, “forever”. The trailer for the upcoming MCU film “The Marvels” dropped its first teaser on Tuesday during Good Morning America. Fans got a first look at the Marvel film starring Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). As stated by Marvel, Carol Danvers also known as Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. The film will also star Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe (Zah-Wee) Ashton, and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta will be directing the anticipated film and Kevin Feige is the producer. “The Marvels” releases in theaters on November 10. Upgrade was directed by Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man, Saw Franchise, Insidious Franchise). To me it was a stylistic sci-fi body horror movie that flew under the radar. It plays out like a better version of the movie Venom and left me in awe in it's ending. Would love for Whannell to pursue more original ideas now that he has struck up a deal with Blumhouse to create more movies but I know he is focusing more on the Universal Monster movies. Legendary Pictures was definitely chasing Avengers money when they hired Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) to coerce big ape Kong to join a MonsterVerse superteam. But they might have more luck winning the Vietnam War than lasting three days on Skull Island with bonkers POW John C Reilly and a nest of subterranean, flesh-eating lizards. In part 1 we discussed our thoughts, feelingness, and barely contained giddiness over the amazingness that is the “WONDER WOMAN” film (which is tearing up box offices as we speak) to discuss just a few of the beautiful, touching, and just straight up thrilling moments that we were able to process before glazing over in enjoyment of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine orchestrated by the masterful Patty Jenkins. But NOW we cut to it and discuss the fabulous, soon to be Joss Whedon-made-film star: “BATGIRL.” Growing in popularity Since Barbara Gordon first appeared to great love in the Adam West (RIP, legend!) Batman series, Batgirl has gone from one of the most consistently entertaining and three-dimensional characters in any universe to the most intriguing comic book film down the pike, at least according to these highly objective reporters. Bottom Line: Joss Whedon loves and knows how to write the crap out of incredibly strong but also complicated female superheroes – from Buffy to Black Widow to now Gal Gadot’s spectacular Diana Prince in his new directorial and writers role in the “JUSTICE LEAGUE” – but Batgirl’s very ground-level approach is a wonderful contrast to heavy hitter, borderline OP female superheroes like Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Batgirl is much closer in tone and objective to the Netflix Marvel’s Defenders, especially Jessica Jones given their past near-death traumas that haunt them and their complex struggle to accept the past even while trying to positively shape the future -- though, Jessica will laugh at this to the grave even while we know she's full of shit in her cynicism deep down. Babs and the other Batgirls over the years have been equally complex, impulsive, and hilarious. Let BrittGirl and I show you the superhero you've always wanted even though you didn't know it.
