Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Max's The Pitt, Disney Plus's Skeleton Crew, and AppleTV Plus's Severance, and Hulu's Paradise. Newsbreak – This month, they discuss a recent Variety feature by Adam B. Vary detailing Netflix's ambitious plans for 2025 and their self proclaimed standing as the perpetual underdog, despite also hitting major milestones including 300M subscribers and nearly $1,000 a share on their stock price. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Bill and Josh agree that AppleTV Plus reigns supreme thanks to the cultural juggernaut that has been Severance S2. Meanwhile, Alex gives Mubi its flowers, after its films earned six Academy Award nominations, including for their breakout hit film The Substance, starring Academy Award front runner Demi Moore. New Series Spotlight – This month, the guys pay off their Emmy bet, with Alex forcing Josh and Bill to watch one of his favorite series from the past decade, Better Things, starring Pamala Adlon and Academy Award nominee Mikey Madison. Specifically, the guys watched S5E6 San Francisco, wherein we follow Adlon's Sam as she takes a gig director an episode of a network sitcom, which shoots in San Francisco, forcing Sam's oldest daughter Max, played by Academy Award Nominee Mickey Madison (who you may know from Anora, Scream 5, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), to step up and take care of her thirteen year old sister Duke while Duke's friend Pepper is staying with them for a visit. This episode guest stars Ron Cephas Jones and Lena Waithe and aired back in 2022.

The epic ALFRED HITCHCOCK MEGA DRAFT continues in PART TWO, as Mark Harris (Pictures at a Revolution, Five Came Back, Mike Nichols: A Life), Adam B. Vary (Variety) and Screen Drafts Legend Darren Franich (The Draftland Scene) take over the middle of the list, ranking films #20 to #11!
Some weeks back our Discord channel erupted in a lively discussion over a recent article from Variety titled Toxic Fandom: How Hollywood Is Battling Fans Who Are ‘Just Out for Blood'. In it, journalist Adam B. Vary reports about the effects toxic fandom is having on the personal lives of actors and how studios are combating it from hiring security firms to focus grouping diehard fans. The article inspired us to explore the topic more deeply in a Side Notes episode. This was an inspiring and enlightening conversation, and I hope you all get as much out of it as we did. Back next week with another movie fix, see you then!
HITCHCOCK / TRUFFAUT Month commences with PART ONE (picks 30-21) of the long, long, long-awaited ALFRED HITCHCOCK MEGA DRAFT. Joining us to build the foundation of the list are newly-minted Screen Drafts All-Star William Bibbiani (Critically Acclaimed Network), author Walter Chaw (A Walter Hill Film), and newly-minted Screen Drafts LEGEND Drea Clark (Maximum Film)! In two weeks: PART TWO with Mark Harris, Darren Franich, and Adam B. Vary
It's been ten years since FANgirl Blog launched the Hyperspace Theories podcast. On the latest episode, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester look back on the podcast's evolution from its origin in discussing how to speculate wisely on upcoming Star Wars stories to a broader consideration of storytelling, character arcs and the Hero's Journey, and franchise management. We reminisce about our favorite episodes of the podcast over the years. After looking back, we turn to the present and future of the franchise through the lens of two recent articles in major Hollywood trade publications. James Hibberd's lengthy essay in The Hollywood Reporter asks “Is Disney Bad at Star Wars?” offers a fair assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the past decade of the franchise, ultimately concluding that it's not bad but it could do better. The timing of the article's publication also is notable for two reasons. First, although it studiously avoids placing blame on particular named individuals, it renders an unusually critical perspective on Star Wars after years of the trades avoiding doing so. Second, it follows an unannounced but publicly visible change to Lucasfilm's leadership structure: the elevation of Lynwen Brennan from Executive Vice President to President, a change with significance beyond simply a promotion in her title. We consider the implications of these developments for what further changes can be expected at Lucasfilm. We then discuss Adam B. Vary's article “Toxic Fandom: How Hollywood Is Battling Fans Who Are ‘Just Out for Blood' — From Social Media Boot Camps to Superfan Focus Groups,” which was published in Variety on the same day. Among other franchises mentioned in the article, Star Wars has a mixed record in this area, too. Vary's article wisely distinguishes between criticism (or praise) of a work by fans based on the substance of the story on the one hand, and abusive behavior driven by agendas (and monetization) unrelated to the merits of quality or stewardship – although the article also makes clear that studios and their executives may not consistently pay attention to this distinction. We conclude by looking ahead to some of the topics for discussion on future episodes of Hyperspace Theories, including The Bad Batch Season Three, Agatha All Along, the Wicked movie, Skeleton Crew, and more. The complaints, which The Hollywood Reporter has obtained, come against the heirs of some late comic book geniuses including Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Gene Colan. The suits seek declaratory relief that these blockbuster characters are ineligible for copyright termination as works made for hire. If Marvel loses, Disney would have to share ownership of characters worth billions. Marvel Studios Has Over 30 Projects in Active Development https://www.cbr.com/marvel-studios-30-plus-projects-in-development/ When veteran Marvel Studios producer Victoria Alonso was asked by 221radio if the company had 35 projects in the works, Alonso laughingly replied, "We are currently working on 31 projects, don't add 4 more, please." If that sounds like a lot to take on at once, Alonso agrees. Yet, the producer went on to assure fans that the studio is prepared for some hit-or-miss projects so long as they stay true to the human characters and interconnectedness of the MCU. "It is a question about how are we handling multiple plates in the air at the same time," Alonso continued, "and the biggest thing is that sometimes the plates fall, and, you know, what are you going to do then? We want people to understand that the idea that we have, to tell these connected stories, it is important that the world knows that the characters we create, their stories have to do with how humans interact with each other." Disney+ Marvel's What If…? team reveals season 1 finale intel: There's 'a bigger plan' AC Bradley Admits … We kill Tony a LOT https://ew.com/tv/marvel-what-if-ac-bradley-bryan-andrews-episode-8/ Season 1 was originally meant to be 10 episodes, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic one of those episodes had to be pushed to season 2, and Bradley says the delayed episode helped balance the other, darker stories. "Our 10th episode was a more light, upbeat Tony Stark episode," she says. "I noticed on Twitter we're getting a lot of crap for killing Tony a lot. He has become the Kenny of the What If…? universe by accident." The episodes have mirrored the comics by ending on cliffhangers that each tease a larger story. And it seems that all of those threads may actually come together in the season's final episode. It's also possible that the already announced second season could follow up on certain stories, while new methods of remotely making animated series may help the show to avoid the issues the pandemic has posed and craft longer episodes. For now, however, the show does still have one limit: the MCU. What If...? Episodes Are Shorter than Planned Because of COVID https://deadline.com/2021/09/what-if-marvel-series-a-c-bradley-podcast-interview-1234843778/ https://www.cbr.com/marvel-what-if-short-runtime-covid/ "What If...? comics ended abruptly and really dark to prove that the main timeline is the better timeline," Bradley said. "We've used that as our reason to cut stories off a little bit shorter. All these episodes could have been 45 minutes. Some of the animatics were 35 minutes, but due to animation and Covid, we cut them a little bit shorter than we would have liked." Disney+ Pushes Ms. Marvel to 2022 https://variety.com/lists/marvel-studios-release-schedule/ https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-ms-marvel-2022/ https://twitter.com/adambvary/status/1440844586016927744 Variety Senior Entertainment Writer Adam B. Vary recently posted an update regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe's release schedule. "I've confirmed what was obvious to most Marvel Studios observers: [Ms. Marvel] has moved from a late 2021 release on Disney Plus to 2022," Vary tweeted. This is not the first report indicating Ms. Marvel's debut shift. TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich previously suggested the series had been delayed until early a 2022 delay. Film insider Amit Chaudhari recently stated that the series was set to hit Disney+ in February. Disney+ Removes Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter Short Film https://thedirect.com/article/disney-plus-removal-hayley-atwell-agent-carter-short-film Marvel Studios' Agent Carter One-Shot was completely removed from Disney+, seemingly across all territories. In mid-September 2021, Marvel Studios' Agent Carter One-Shot was added to Disney+ within its own special section/page . Beforehand, the short could only be found in Iron Man 3 's EXTRAS section; Agent Carter has been removed there as well. There doesn't seem to be any clear indication as to why Disney+ would remove a section solely dedicated to the Agent Carter One-Shot. The One-Shot originally appeared on the 2013 DVD and digital release of Iron Man 3 and gave some brief insight into how Peggy eventually started up what viewers knew as SHIELD. From there, the Agent Carter ABC show was also born, spanning two seasons on the television network . On its own, the One-Shot exemplifies the brilliance of Atwell's character; it reminds viewers of why she is now a returning force to the franchise and re-emphasizes her importance to MCU lore as a whole . It's possible that its removal could have been nothing more than in preparation for bigger and better things to come for Peggy; maybe the streaming service pulled the gun and wants to highlight her more so down the line, possibly aligning with the Season 1 finale of What If...? . Video Games https://gamerant.com/marvel-vs-capcom-2-disney-capcom-revival-discussion-report/ This campaign to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was started by Maximilian Dood, a YouTuber whose content revolves around fighting games. He started the campaign earlier this year under "#FREEMVC2" in order to gather support to hopefully re-release the crossover game onto modern systems. This caught the attention of Digital Eclipse, a studio that has worked with both Disney and Capcom to remaster some of its old games. Studio head Mike Mika showed his support for re-releasing the game, along with giving the game a proper remaster treatment. In a recent interview with Shacknews, Mika brings further thoughts to the table regarding how this re-release could be possible. I think I'm officially over this series. Beard Watch 2021 — 09/25/2021 Space-god frat boy holds intergalactic kegger does not make for a good story to me. StargatePioneer — 09/25/2021 Overall the series is a light hearted campy ride that hits some weeks and misses in other episodes. Not to mention a few tragic stories along the way too. But I certainly would not take any of it too seriously. This week's episode especially was meant more as a fun dalliance than any other with events that could only be told via a cartoon IMO. But all this is from a guy who like The Phantom Menace, dislikes Empire Strikes Back and is often wrong. So I might just be drinking the cool aid. Erasure (Too Lazy !!) — 09/26/2021 That's on this was one of my favorite episodes too along with T'Challa Star Lord. And wow someone else who likes the Phantom Menace and Empire not so much Others do exist TPM is one of my highest ranked SW films while ESB is one of my lowest. Beard Watch 2021 — Today at 5:34 PM Interesting finale. Probably the best ep of the series. Though it raises some questions about how.things should have gone during infinity war... We kick off Season 2 of the podcast with an in-depth discussion of AMERICANA FILMS with DAVID FEAR from ROLLING STONE and ADAM B. VARY from VARIETY. What does "Americana" mean? Well, we discuss that too. Excuse my audio - it's a little tinny. But Adam and David sound like champions. And remember...movies are great, but they're better with gravy. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/movieswithgravy/support

This week on Episode 499 of Priority One Podcast: We Trek Out the marketing machine for Paramount+ and how it might affect Star Trek, and how a community initiative spotlights the ways Women Make Trek. In Star Trek gaming, you’ll soon get your hands on that Voyager-J in Star Trek Online, as seen in Star Trek Discovery, and Star Trek Adventures updates some table-top goodness. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages. This Week’s Community Question is: CQ: After learning more about how Star Trek will help build the Paramount+ catalogue and how they might handle new releases of Trek, are you sold on Paramount+? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Prodigy Pushed To Paramount+ If you use Twitter to stay current with Star Trek news, then last week your phone probably blew up when the Hageman brothers dropped an image of what appears to be the six main characters of Star Trek: Prodigy. The upcoming animated series was originally slated to premiere on Nickelodeon, but has since been moved to become a Paramount+ offering, only to be rebroadcast on Nickelodeon after the first 10 episodes are released on Paramount+. Source: ViacomCBS via Twitter Moving on, in their “Investors Day'' presentation on Wednesday, Feb 24th, Variety reports the move is part of a greater strategy according to Paramount+ programming chief Julie McNamara who said, "there is a kind of franchise strategy, which is the notion that if you execute new versions of this really strong IP that you have, well, you’re going to drive people across the paywall." McNamara also explained that the decision to move Prodigy to a Paramount+ premiere came from data they analyzed from CBS All Access showing "...subscribers who watched ‘Trek’ shows also watched Nickelodeon’s animated series ‘The Legend of Korra.’” Paramount+ And Star Trek But, what about Section 31? Well, according to Kurtzman and McNamara, they’re still in "conversations." Variety’s Adam B. Vary reports that, "they emphasized that the current five-series slate [Prodigy, DISCO, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds] will likely not expand further until at least one of the shows runs its course." Image: The Hollywood Reporter. But unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and recent plans for the expansion of the Star Wars franchise on Disney Plus, don’t expect these Trek series to be unfolding within a closely knit storytelling universe. “We’re aiming to have our shows feel unique and different from each other,” Alex Kurtzman, the overall executive producer for the Star Trek universe, tells Variety. “We want to give everybody a reason to watch each show.” Kurtzman also told the Hollywood Reporter, “Whatever we do next is probably going to be in different timelines and different areas of the universe that haven't been explored before; a show that hasn't been dedicated to them yet.” So tell us what you think, Captains: After learning more about how Star Trek will help build the Paramount+ catalogue and how they might handle new releases of Trek -- are you sold on Paramount+? So, while a Klingon fitness training regimen complete with pain sticks and forcefield Nausicaans is still on the drawing board, maybe you’ll be able to argue grand unification theory with Einstein by 2024. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS by Thomas Reynolds & Shane Hoover There's Coffee In That Infinity Pack Sorry, wannabe Red Angels: time travel will be forbidden by 3189, forever consumed by the Blender of Canon. Writers of the 32nd century will never know the thrill of making characters say how much they hate temporal mechanics. But nothing–not the Temporal Accords, not Q, not even ViacomCBS itself–is more powerful than our appetite for new ships. Cryptic provides what Kurtzman denies, as STO gets its first ship from the 32nd century: the Janeway-class Command Science Vessel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf5mX_fFqHc First seen as the Voyager-J in “Die Trying”, the Janeway-class represents eleven iterations on the Intrepid-class from...well, Voyager. In-game, the Janeway-class is Command-first and science-second, with the Inspiration mechanic and a Commander Sci/Command bridge seat. It also has a secondary deflector, other standard science vessel capabilities, and a Lieutenant Universal/Miracle Worker seat. After all, when your fleet apparently only has a dozen ships, you have to make the most of them. Image: Cryptic Studios. A Photonic Cannon console cloaks you and spawns a short-lived pew-pew pet to handle the dirty work. The Enhanced Cloaking Integration trait adds hull restoration and maneuverability when entering cloak, and Firing Cycle Haste when leaving it. Finally, the 32nd Century Phaser Weapons offer both a minty fresh taste and possibly–possibly–one of the best procs ever. These weapons may cause both immediate and overtime boff cooldown reductions, giving your Aux2Batt build’s Technician doffs a well-earned breather. It's All Gone To Pieces Is there anything about the Janeway-class that doesn’t get us jazzed? Well, fans’ reception of the 32nd century ship aesthetic is as divided as the ships themselves. Upgrade was directed by Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man, Saw Franchise, Insidious Franchise). To me it was a stylistic sci-fi body horror movie that flew under the radar. It plays out like a better version of the movie Venom and left me in awe in it's ending. Would love for Whannell to pursue more original ideas now that he has struck up a deal with Blumhouse to create more movies but I know he is focusing more on the Universal Monster movies. Let us know at ThisTimeWith.com/talk EPISODE #70: How Movie Theatres are Reopening Safely with Sarah Van Lange, Executive Director of Communications, Community and Social at Cineplex - August 3, 2020 MAILBAGBrady says, Hey guys just want to say I enjoyed your recent episode of you guys talking about the Superman Black Suit and the Snyder Cut. I know you guys were curious as to how much Whedon reshot the film and I wanted to help clarify that. As you know Zack Snyder has not seen the theatrical cut but he has stated that you only seen about 10-20% of his footage while the rest of it is Joss Whedon. When Whedon came on board he wrote 80 pages of new script material. So that's about an 1 hour and 20 minutes of new footage that he shot in a 2 hour movie with credits that was mandated by WB. So already that shows you how different the film is. The reason Whedon didn't get credit for directing is cause the DGA rules state that a director who films 90% of principal photography gets sole credit no matter what. Zack Snyder filmed 100% of principal photography so that's why his name is in the theatrical cut. So yes this movie is going to be an entirely different from the Whedon version as well as the version he shot. That's why they are throwing so much money to basically redo it from the ground up. So things like the Russian family and the parademons smelling fear from the Batman scene are not in the Snyder Cut. Sorry for the long message but just wanted to give you that information. Thanks again guys for all you do :) ANNOUNCEMENTSCOMMENTARIES: Game Night, Sicario, and Spider-Man (2002) NOW AVAILABLE ON THE MOVIE PODCAST FEED!CATCH UP: Black Lives Matter, Zack Snyder's Justice League ‘Snyder Cut' Coming to HBO Max in 2021 and Interview with Kevin Lima, Director of A Goofy Movie, Tarzan, and Enchanted and more!CHECK OUT: The Last of Us Part II Spoilercast AVAILABLE NOW! Because it's 2020 (ugh) audiences will not be flocking to the multiplexes to enjoy Hollywood's hottest summer releases this 4th of July holiday weekend. So Adam B. Vary (Variety) and Alison Willmore (Vulture) thought it would be fun to indulge in some summer nostalgia by looking back and ranking the 7 best films that opened on Independence Day weekend between 1979-2019.
Amid the protests against police brutality sweeping the country after the death of George Floyd, there have been many calls to defund the police. The concept is to take money away from police department budgets, which can be in the billions in some cities, and move that money to community services. LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, just announced that the LAPD budget could be cut by up to $150 million and reinvest that money into communities of color. I'll tell you more about the growing calls to defund police. Next, as we continue to reopen the country after the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down, one industry that has yet to formalize a plan to get back is the entertainment industry. What we do know, is that whatever the plan is that eventually comes out, it will be expensive to restart production. There will be shorter shooting days and longer shooting schedules, casts and crews will be put in quarantine, breaks for temperature checks and COVID testing, and new personnel dedicated to health and safety. Adam B. Vary, senior entertainment writer at Variety, joins us for the pricey plan to restart production. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

No one, especially not Alan Moore, ever really wanted a Watchmen sequel. Which is exactly why handing the reins to Damon Lindelof, who has a history of disorienting and upsetting expectations, is a stroke of genius. Last year’s HBO series, spearheaded by Lindelof, is a bold, startling continuation of Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel masterpiece--so of course, after talking about the book, Paul, Arlo, and reformed podcaster Greg Sahadachny had to discuss the TV show. The gang talks about the ways in which Lindelof subverts and pays tribute to Moore and Gibbons’ work; how Lindelof built a writers’ room with people who were not like him; the show’s provocative exploration of race and authority; whether or not the show sticks the landing; and much, much more. Next: due to one scheduling kerfuffle after another, we’ve got another Four-Color Flashback for you! Paul and Arlo will discuss Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s Black Hammer. The Oscars are Sunday and once again this year's nominees reflect an Academy that's still older, whiter, and more male. All five directing nominees are men, and 19 of 20 nominees for acting are white. Adam B. Vary, Senior Entertainment Writer for Variety, tells Sam the best-reviewed film of the year is "Parasite," from South Korea, which is up for Best Picture. But none of its cast were singled out for awards. Audrey Cleo Yap, host of Daily Variety on Variety.com, says that lack of notice for Asian actors is consistent with past Academy behavior. She also notes the few film industry insiders who are pushing Hollywood to open up — but says most are too fearful to speak out. Sam also talks with two Virginia Commonwealth University political science students who traveled with their class to New Hampshire to observe and participate in the state's presidential primary activities. They're featured the New Hampshire Public Radio podcast Stranglehold. They asked why such an overwhelmingly white state should remain the first to hold a primary — when it doesn't reflect the rest of the nation.

Disney launched its highly anticipated streaming service, Disney+, this week and added a message to viewers that some of its older material may include outdated or offensive content or cultural images. A trial of a four-day workweek in Japan showed signs of increasing productivity — could something similar succeed in a country like the United States? And as the nation turns its focus to the now-public impeachment hearings of President Donald Trump, Sam talks with Leon Neyfakh, host of seasons one and two of the podcast 'Slow Burn.' In those episodes Neyfakh recounted the Senate Watergate hearings into President Richard Nixon and the impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton. He talks to Sam about similarities and differences to what's happening now. Sam is joined by BuzzFeed senior film reporter Adam B. Vary and host of NPR's 'The Indicator' podcast Stacey Vanek Smith.
It’s too early to know whether Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s horror-comedy READY OR NOT will eventually become a cult hit in the manner of 1985’s CLUE, but the two films share a foundation in dangerous games and the even more dangerous people who play them. After parsing how READY OR NOT works as both horror and comedy, and inducting star Samara Weaving into the scream queen hall of fame, we dig into the two films’ crucial central performances, how both incorporate elements of class satire and farce, and the extent to which each is indebted to actual game mechanics. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar. The gamified murder and mayhem of the recent horror-comedy READY OR NOT put us in mind of a similarly scrappy, low-budget affair with board games in its DNA: John Landis and Jonathan Lynn’s flop-turned-cult-classic CLUE. In this CLUE-centric half of our deadly games pairing, we get into how much both sides of that flop/cult reputation are earned, how much of the film’s genesis in a board game comes across on screen, and how much those additional endings add to the film. Plus, we respond to some feedback taking us to task for one of the many controversial elements of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD that we left out of our discussion of the film. "Avengers: Endgame" is officially opened at movie theaters across the country. It’s the most highly-anticipated movie event of the year and is expected to set a new box office record. Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and the whole Avengers crew are back to do battle with super villain Thanos after he wiped away half of the universe’s population with a single snap of his fingers in last year’s "Avengers: Infinity War." The movie is the culmination of a groundbreaking superhero movie franchise that’s pushed out 22 films in 11 years, starting with the blockbuster "Iron Man" in 2008. With this movie, the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to easily bring in more than $20 billion in global box office earnings. Love it or hate it, this franchise has become one of the most ambitious commercial endeavors in the history of Hollywood. This week on Money Talking, Charlie Herman talks to Adam B. Vary, senior film reporter at BuzzFeed News, and Hunter Harris, associate editor at New York Magazine’s Vulture, about how the Marvel universe has changed the movie business.
