On August 5th, Nev Schulman broke his neck. His C5 and C6. Thankfully, he's expected to make a full recovery.Nev is many things - the creator of MTV's Catfish, a fan-favorite contestant from Dancing with the Stars, and - most important (to me, anyway) - my friend. He's also a past guest on the podcast, so in celebration of Nev's triumphant recovery journey, please enjoy this re-air of his original episode. To check-in on Nev's recovery journey, follow him on Instagram at @nevschulman.**********Original Airing April 29, 2024: Television host and producer Nev Schulman is the walking embodiment of one of our ethos here at The Gratitudeology Podcast: turning pain into purpose. Chances are, you're aware of the now famous cautionary tale about the time he was lured into an online relationship by means of multiple fictional internet personas. After all, this whirlwind of deception and heartache entered the term Catfish into the modern lexicon, giving way for the award-winning documentary Catfish and, later, the renowned follow-up MTV docu series Catfish: The TV Show. But there's a reason Nev has transcended his origins as a victim of an online scam to become one of American television's most beloved hosts. Nev's unique experience has served as an engine of empathy, allowing him to get to the bottom of real life stories of internet schemes with a comprehensive understanding of both the victim's experience and the perpetrator's motivation.Tune in to hear about his unlikely background in dance (yup... ballet!!), the origins of the name Catfish, the story of "the punch that changed everything," his view on the evolution of the internet as a social tool... and so much more.**********Make sure to follow Jamie @jamiehess on Instagram for news & updates, and visit our companion Instagram account @gratitudeology for a sneak peek into the personal moments discussed on the show.************Thank you to Nev Schulman for sharing your truth with us today. This is the last episode of the season, but we'll be back very soon after a short summer hiatus. We couldn't think of a more perfect guest to end things off with than multi-hyphenate Kamie Crawford. She has quite the CV. She's a producer and creator, the host of MTV's Catfish: The TV Show, Are You The One? *and* Ex on the Beach, a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, and the former Miss Teen USA 2010. She also has her very own relationship advice podcast, Relationshi*t. Kamie originally wanted to be a dermatologist, but quickly pivoted to communications after taking biology in college and hating it. she did local red carpet interviews and sent her reel to different news stations. She even moved to New York and modeled while trying to land TV hosting work that never came. Things changed in 2018 when someone in casting for Catfish reached out to see if she'd be interested in guest hosting with star Nev Schulman. She was a natural and landed a spot as a full-time host. In today's episode of Girlboss Radio, Kamie talks about lying on her job application to land her first job at American Apparel, when to know which career opportunities to say "yes" to, and how being delusional is the reason she got to where she is today. Whether you're familiar with Nev Schulman or not, you've probably heard of his hit TV show Catfish. For those who aren't familiar, catfishing is when someone is lured into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. On this episode of the Cripescast, Nev explains the show's journey. Starting as a documentary based on his own catfish experience, to then being picked up by MTV for a series, to it being part of the cultural zeitgeist today, Catfish has taken on a life of its own. Beyond that, he and Charlie discuss everything under the sun from their love of minivans to their own personal manscaping preferences. While he may be from New York originally, Nev explains that he wants to settle down in the Midwest, specifically in Michigan. They bond over using cleaning as a form of therapy and Charlie promises to gift Nev a vintage vacuum cleaner next time he's in town. Find Nev on all platforms @nevschulman and check out his show Catfish: The TV Show on MTV. Find the Cripescast on all platforms @cripescast and check out our show at cripescast.com. Today's guest is author, producer, and television host Nev Schulman. Nev's life changing experience was chronicled in the documentary film CATFISH and led to the creation of the hit MTV docuseries CATFISH: THE TV SHOW.Nev takes us back to the beginning and recounts the story about his relationship with a young woman who didn't exist, the complicated emotions he felt before and after making that discovery, and how he became more empathetic as a result. You'll hear the origin and deeper meaning of the term catfish, the value of awkward silences, why he has compassion for the people doing the catfishing, how the show has changed his perception of love, and a lot more. Our first caller is Samantha who lost touch with a good friend for years only to reconnect and discover that the friend is now dating her ex. Samantha wonders how or if she should tell her friend that the guy isn't what he seems.Next is a call with Jonathan who, after years of playing the field, believes he has finally found love. Now Jonathan wonders if he's getting played when his younger boyfriend doesn't return his texts and offers explanations that don't quite add up. This week's episode of How Was Your Week is a celebration of friendship, anger and genius. First, Julie introduces you to DAVID OZANICH, a brilliant playwright and dear friend who tragically passed away this week, way too soon. In an interview recorded two years ago, David talks to Julie about his favorite roles of the fabulous Karen Black, and it's wonderful to hear his voice in the present tense. Then, hilarious cartoonist MICHAEL KUPPERMAN is here to chat with Julie about their post-9/11 friendship, his landscaping shenanigans, a cartoon about Humpty Dumpty, and an encounter with Peter Tork. Also: A call to cancel SMASH! A tirade against CATFISH: THE TV SHOW and Jenny McCarthy! A plea for understanding in the realm of errant rage in the face of grief! And whether THE SHINING would have been better if Karen Black were in it instead of Shelley Duvall. Thank you for dealing with my emotions this week. I hope this show brings you some joy and insight. Life is short, love your friends like it's your job.
