Hospital readmissions due to inadequate or incorrect treatment cost healthcare and the U.S. government billions of dollars. This is particularly notable in cardiac care. By continually reviewing and revising standards of care, professional medical organizations seek to ensure that the standard of care reflects the latest proven findings regarding treatment and care. Ruth Pierce, a nurse with 37 years of experience, who is also a legal nurse consultant, currently works as a field reviewer for a national accreditation company. She is a charter member of Pat Iyer's LNC Elite coaching program. She shares her wealth of knowledge about how standards are developed, how long it takes for them to be generally adopted, and why knowing the timeline in a legal case is crucial to applying the time-appropriate standard of care principles. She also explains the difference between accreditation, a baseline level of approval, and certification, which characterizes a hospital that goes beyond the basics. The information in this podcast will give you a big-picture view of how standards are developed, changed, and filter down to the clinical level. It will provide you with an essential background for understanding how deviations in standards of care occur. Join me in this episode of Unveiling Standards of Care and Cardiac Care Guidelines - Ruth Pierce What's a leading cause of hospital readmission? How is the medical community addressing this issue? Why are national standards of care essential? Why must an LNC be acutely aware of timelines when evaluating patient care? How did the current guidelines for cardiac care get developed? Ingles Professor of Nursing at Duke University School of Nursing and Editor-in-Chief of Nurse Educator. Dr. Griffin and Dr. Oermann answer some of the questions that were submitted by attendees of the webinar, Preparing the Next Generation of Practice-Ready Nurses. In this podcast, the following questions are addressed: We recognize that graduate nurses are not practice ready when they graduate. One recommendation is to have a shared competency model across education and practice for beginner nurses. Can you tell us more about this idea and why it's important for both education and practice? How can education and practice determine these competencies? Do you think assessing shared competency and clinical judgement is superior to clinical judgement alone when we are looking at practice-readiness?

Is your New Year's Resolution to take charge of your health? If so, this is YOUR year! Good health starts in the mouth and goes all the way to the gut. A common problem seen by physicians across the country is yeast overgrowth (bloating, loose stools, yeast infections, etc.). Yeast is in the fungus family and antibiotics are a common culprit for yeast overgrowth because they kill the healthy bacteria along with the bad bacteria, and don't kill the yeast. Yeast grows on sugar, so eating a high sugar eating plan also causes yeast overgrowth. Join Dr. Hotze and Jill Hartland, BSN, RN, CCRN-K as they discuss the dangers of yeast overgrowth and the benefits of a yeast-free eating program. Tiffani has twenty-one years of nursing experience and nine years dedicated to the art of simulation. I engage students as active learners who reflect critically on what they have learned and apply it to the ongoing development of critical thinking skills. My teaching philosophy is that “as a proponent of simulation, it is my duty to help learners engage and practice nursing skills safely, so they are competent healthcare workers.” In my current role, as an associate clinical professor and simulation center coordinator at Auburn University College of nursing, I coordinate, design, and implement all simulation activities for pre-licensure nursing students. I hold the following certifications: as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN-K), as a certified healthcare simulation educator (CHSE), and as a certified healthcare simulation operations specialist (CHSOS) She is an active SSH, INACSL, ASPE, and INACSL ad-hoc diversity committee member (IncluDE). My role is pivotal in onboarding and mentoring lab RNs (nurses hired to work in the simulation and skills labs) and new faculty, training them in simulation methodologies, prebrief, and debrief. I have numerous publications and presentations on simulation-based topics up to the international level having presented at IMSH, INACSL, and ASPE.Dr Chidume's email: Tlc0045@auburn.edu

I use the acronym ACE: A for attend the event, C for categorize the content, and E for explain to colleagues. There is so much great work that oncology nurses are doing across the nation that should be disseminated. Aside from attending formal education events, oncology nurses can also involve themselves in opportunities for formal and informal mentorship opportunities at their work locations. . . . Peer-to-peer training and dissemination is a wonderful opportunity to continue the conversation and disseminate those practices.” Timestamp (TS) 06:26 “Just-in-time training is really applicable for those refreshers. And considering the constant changes that have taken place and are continuing to take place, when you know about the content that you need for practice but just need a few quick reminders that are easily accessible, that's the perfect place for just-in-time training to occur.” TS 11:51 “Certification is not necessarily a formal education, but in that preparation of expanding that particular content knowledge in a field, such as your OCN® examination, your bone marrow transplant certification—those really increase that scope of content and add to what knowledge you have to take care of these patients and ultimately improve the outcome of care that we provide to oncology patients.” TS 14:46 “Participating in formal academic degrees, renewing your certification, obtaining contact hours for certification, peer-to-peer sharing with colleagues—they're all types of modalities of education that you can utilize to be the best version of the oncology nurse that you want to be for our patients.” TS 18:23

Highlights From Today's Episode Garner: “Obtaining a PhD in nursing has always been a goal since I entered my initial program, because I've had the goal to always teach and give back to nurses. I am the first person in my family to obtain a PhD and was encouraged by my family to acquire more education. They didn't necessarily say, ‘You need to get a PhD,' but rather, ‘Get the education you need to fulfill your life goals,' and I've really seeded that throughout my lifetime.” Timestamp (TS) 06:30 Geddie: “Sometimes it is difficult to receive honest feedback, but it is much appreciated. . . . When honest feedback is given from a sincere and authentic perspective, you grow and develop so much from it.” TS 09:42 Nevidjon: “As board members, you also give feedback to one another. That is part of the board experience. When a new board member comes on, there is a ‘board buddy' who is assigned, and then there are check-ins in terms of how things are going, what kinds of experiences [there are]. We embrace that in terms of the board experience.” TS 10:03 Garner: “Mentorship is a great opportunity for growth and self-reflection. I believe that mentorship is a continual journey. There is so much to learn from others as well as impart what you have learned to others.” TS 10:53 Nevidjon: “The path to a national board isn't necessarily just within that organization itself, but the total kind of experiences that you bring.” TS 14:07 Geddie: “When I began my oncology nursing career, I could always identify gaps where improvement was needed to enhance the daily practice of nurses in the acute care setting. I could not make a difference to improve practice while providing direct care every day, so I decided to pursue a master's degree for the clinical nurse specialist. And this role allowed me not only to stay close to clinical practice but to also drive improvements in the healthcare system in which we worked.” TS 18:14

During this episode, we welcome Nathan Stanaway, MS, NRP and Alina Capatina MSN, CCRN-K, CNL. These skilled process improvement professionals discuss the strengths and potential roadblocks of integrating a new app that supports EMS when they notify the hospital of an incoming STEMI patient. Nathan Stanaway is the Senior Manager of Mobile Care EMS, Critical Care Transport, and AHA Training Center at Baystate Health. Alina Capatina is the former STEMI Program Coordinator at Baystate and has since moved on to the Operations Excellence Department. In recent years, Alina and Nathan were directly involved in the implementation of e-Bridge into their system. Specifically, their focus was on maximizing care for STEMI patients being transported by EMS. For scale, Baystate Health is the biggest and busiest STEMI program in Massachusetts. They receive upwards of 400 STEMI patients per year from the field and from 10 sending facilities around the region. To them, the importance of EMS in STEMI care is obvious.
