In this episode, we are going to shine the spotlight on a species that doesn't always get the limelight on this podcast: the horse! Horses pose a unique challenge for anesthetists, especially when we turn off the vaporizer at the end of anesthesia and ask these rather large animals to stand up while under the influence of medications designed to cause sedation and muscle relaxation. In equine anesthesia, the recovery period is a time of considerable risk and has been the focus of prolific research, with many studies attempting to pinpoint risk factors that increase the risk of adverse events occurring in the recovery period and identify pharmaceutical protocols and recovery techniques that will mitigate these risks. Lucky for us, we have an exceptional guest joining the podcast to delve into this particularly challenging aspect of veterinary anesthesia. Dr. Stuart Clark-Price is a renowned expert in the field, boasting board certifications in both Large Animal Medicine and Anesthesia, and recently ascended to the role of full Professor of Anesthesia at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Together, with host Dr. Bonnie Gatson, we'll explore why recovery from general anesthesia poses such a significant challenge for the horse, shed light on the various risk factors that can increase the likelihood of undesirable recoveries, and share evidence-based recommendations for interventions that can enhance the quality of recovery for equine patients. If you like what you hear, we have a couple of favors to ask of you: Become a member of NAVAS for access to more anesthesia and analgesia educational and RACE-approved CE content. In the 200th episode of the AABP Have you Herd? podcast, AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Jessican Klabnik, a theriogenologist on faculty at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Klabnik was one of the authors on a paper published in the Online First edition of the Bovine Practitioner. This case series paper evaluated the surgical success and reproductive performance of bulls undergoing surgery for correction of penile deviation.Klabnik reviews penile deviation syndrome in bulls which can include spiral, ventral or sigmoid deviations due to an abnormality in the dorsal apical ligament. Surgical correction or culling are the only management considerations for these bulls; however, there is a lack of peer-reviewed data on the outcomes from surgical correction. Klabnik discusses some of the challenges with collecting data from these 25 cases with 10 cases meeting the inclusion criteria for the study. The surgery does not have a high risk of complications and was deemed successful in seven out of the ten bulls evaluated. Of these seven, six bulls achieved intromission and five sired progeny. Although this study represents a small number of cases, the surgery appears to have a 50:50 success rate, but due to the low risk of complications, bulls that do not successfully return to herd sire capabilities can still be culled for salvage value. This case series report can help to guide veterinarians performing bull breeding soundness exams when they observe a penile deviation, and also help veterinarians in private practice or referral institutions when evaluating bulls as surgical candidates.Mossallam, A. F., Schumaker, O. J., Mulon, P.-Y., Dohlman, T. M., Meisner, M. D., Jarrin-Yepez, P., Anderson, D. E., Rush, J. B., Prado, T. M., Armstrong, C. L., & Klabnik, J. L. (2024). Video Version https://vimeo.com/795992546 About the Podcast My guest today is Ben Cook, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Spreetail, a next-generation 3PL company headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. We start the conversation with Ben sharing his early years. His father was an Army Officer who resigned soon after Ben was born to have a more stable family life. But that didn't mean they set roots and became grounded, quite the opposite, as his father became a high-school football coach who moved through several high-schools in the Southeastern United States; and also did some time in Spain and in Africa on volunteer work. So Ben struggles with where “home” is, except that it's the United States. Ben then shares some details of his military career. Being in the Special Forces, the assignments were not the most comfortable (including stints above the arctic circle). But it was pre-9/11, so the assignments were (perhaps) a bit easier than afterwards. After the military, he became interested in Supply Chain. Perhaps recognizing the importance of supply chains during his military career somehow influenced his gravitation to the discipline which, in the late 1990's and early 2000's, was in its infancy. We walk though the various roles he had; including one in China soon after China's assentation to being a member of the World Trade Organization. And Ben shares some of the lessons learned along the way, some by design, some by accident, including a lesson-learned about culture eating strategy for breakfast. These experiences led him to develop his personal approach to leadership which he calls “One Team”, and I am sure you will find his thoughts on this quite interesting; perhaps even adoptable. About Ben Cook Ben Cook With over 20 years of leadership experience with a focus on leading startups, driving turnaround efforts, scaling revenue, invest to grow and global expansion, Ben Cook is a hands-on, people-focused, leader and board member. “When I was young, I knew that I was going to be one of two things growing up, either a teacher or a veterinarian. Of course, at the time, I was very unaware that you could actually do both. I have a very vivid memory of giving all of my toys a test and those that failed, I threw out the window. Now, thankfully for my current students, I have vastly changed my teaching style.” Our guest on this episode of My Veterinary Life Podcast is Dr. Ryan Gibson. Dr. Gibson is currently on faculty at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a board-certified veterinary neurologist, and we talk about all the twists and turns his career has taken. He emphasizes how creating a culture of appreciation is key to a healthy work environment AND how he realized he could blend his two passions of teaching and being a veterinarian. Wanona Satcher is the founder and CEO of Mākhers Studio, a green manufacturing and modular design build company. She's a graduate of Auburn University College of Architecture, Design and Construction, and Dartmouth College Tuck School of Business. She's written for The Huffington Post, and participated in both the CityLab Aspen Institute, and Bloomberg Philanthropies National Innovation Program. Wanona was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and that had a profound impact on who she grew into. Not only was she surrounded by family and community members who were entrepreneurial in spirit as well as community-focused, but she was also surrounded by civil rights leaders and the bedrock of the civil rights movement. She grew up knowing that there is always an obligation to do more for others and do it in a way where you meet people where they are. All of this led to her asking: what does it mean to build conscious communities? While working a government job after college, Wanona created an innovation lab. She was working at the intersection of tech, research, agriculture, music, and more. She began submitting proposals to build community labs where low-income residents could work with high-income residents, create new technologies together, and enable upward mobility. It didn't become a reality, but ideas from that started gaining traction – particularly the idea of using shipping containers – a sustainable resource – to provide value instead of having them just sit around like normal. After leaving her government job, she created Mākhers Studio with the idea of utilizing small spaces for big impact. This brought together her passion for curating to allow people the opportunity to create their own experiences, while also using sustainable resources. Wanona believes that we need spaces to bring together people of different backgrounds to create a common language: common ground. She physically does that with Mākhers Studio, and she advocates for empathy and mindfulness to create those emotional connections necessary to make it happen and forward social impact. What Brett asks: [01:21] Can you start at the beginning and tell us about your early childhood? [07:35] How much of what you experienced as a kid was a part of who you are today? [14:02] How did mindfulness become a part of your parents' life to pass on to you? [21:30] What emerged for you during high school and college? [31:22] How did dealing with that uninformed teenager shape your career? [36:18] What are these communities that you're building? What shape are they taking? [47:40] How has mindfulness come and gone in your life? Rebecca Nance is a research assistant and PhD student in Dr. Bruce Smith's lab in the Scott-Ritchey Research Center at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Auburn, Alabama. Rebecca is involved in modifying Canine Adenovirus Type 2 to explore targeted oncolytic virotherapy in dogs. Using a transcriptomic sequencing approach, the team aims to identify potential targets that are unique to cancerous tissue when compared to the corresponding tissue of origin. In this show, she discusses simple protocol modifications that allowed the isolation of moderately intact RNA from the dense, brittle, and hypocellular bone matrix of canine phalanges, with minimal contamination from connective tissue and marrow, in a quantity and quality suitable for transcriptomic sequencing.Referenced Links:A method for isolating RNA from canine bone, BioTechniques.https://doi.org/10.2144/btn-2019-0153A method for isolating RNA from canine bone, protocols.io.dx.doi.org/10.17504/protocols.io.bf9vjr66

Episode 14: As we discuss topics related to new business start-up, marketing and other important topics, this episode features a conversation with husband and wife team who launched the Dogwood Veterinary Clinic in Norton Commons. They offer some innovative procedures and services, combined with a strong focus on building relationships with their clients. We’re going discuss their vision, their journey (so far) and a few comments on facts you need to know about your pet and the corona virus (Covid-19). Dr. Katie Franklin and Dr. Chris Franklin met while attending the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Katie earner her undergraduate degree at the University of Kentucky. Chris earn his undergraduate degree at Murray State University, where he was also a quarterback for 5 years. After an extensive search, they decided to build their new practice in Louisville’s Norton Commons, rather than buying an existing, veterinary practice. The risk is that they started off without a client base, but were confident that their vision for the business would lead to success. Creating a Vision: While both initially thought they’d focus on equine medicine, Katie and Chris explain how and why they decided to transition to a small animal veterinary practice. Some of the advantages include a better work-life balance, more opportunities to build relationships and the chance to create a unique environment for pet and the pet-owners. For them, it’s about creating a terrific experience. Developing Unique Selling Propositions to Standout in Your Market: Concierge Service – An optional service to provide cell phone access 24/7 for emergencies. You can see if your pet is having a true emergency, or if it’s something that the pet-owner may be able to handle the following day. It can be a significant cost savings vs. a trip to an emergency veterinary hospital. If it is an emergency, Dr. Katie and/or Dr. Chris can communicate directly with the other vets about your pet’s history. Loyalty Program – A way to reward loyal clients. You earn rewards based on the money you spend to be used toward the cost of future services at Dogwood Veterinary Clinic. They want a way to give back to their clients for deciding to support a local business. Regenerative Medicine – A new procedure involving using your pet’s own stem cells and platelet-rich plasma to help it recover more quickly. The entire process is handled at Dogwood. The benefits include: Cheaper than a full surgery Less pain and anesthesia for your pet Your pet can usually go home the next day It’s used on both cats and dogs House Calls – You can schedule a home visit with your vet and a technician for your pet. This is an excellent option if you have limited mobility, multiple pets, large pets or even if you’re worried about avoiding the corona virus. The Dogwood Veterinary Clinic offers a variety of standard surgical procedures including broken bones, abdominal surgeries, bladder stone removal, spay and neutering services. Dr. Chris discusses how they specifically target the market opportunity to provide these services much more cost-effectively than going to a board-certified surgeon. They also offer dental cleanings, extractions and other veterinary dental procedures. The clinic’s website features an online store. This enables you to order medication for your pet and other items to be shipped to your home. You can use the clinic code to order pet food from Purina Vet Direct. During this time of dealing with the Covid-19 virus, Dogwood is offering home delivery. Can My Pet Get the Corona Virus (Covid-19)? Dr. Katie and Dr. Chris explain that while one dog, in Hong Kong, did test weakly positive, it’s not clear that your pet can pass Covid-19 to you. The AVMA’s current position is there’s no evidence a pet can contract, transmit or get sick from the Covid-19 corona virus. Animals do and can carry a corona virus. Note however, that this doesn’t mean it’s the Covid-19 virus. The risk to any virus is its ability to potentially mutate. Spring & Summer Tips for Your Pet: With Easter approaching there’s a risk that certain house plants (e.g. lilies) can be dangerous if your pet chews on them. the plastic grass in your Easter baskets can be very dangerous for cats. Chicken bones, beef bones and fatty foods are dangerous and could lead to pancreatitis. Dogs can be susceptible to sun burn on their noses, ears and bellies. You should be prepared to carefully apply sunscreen. Be sure to avoid using aerosol-based products around your pet. Warm weather means fleas and tick are back. Heart worms and intestinal parasites are also a risk to humans. Remember, there are simple ways to prevent all of them. Important Thoughts from this Conversation: Understand the impact of starting a new business on your work-life balance. Before you start you own business, develop your unique selling proposition(s), so people notice you and take notice of you. Once you’ve developed your business plan, have the courage to actually start. I hope you enjoy this season’s new podcast format. I’ve worked with small businesses for many years. When Kat said she wanted to do a whole episode about football, she got some skeptical looks from the rest of the Meat + Three team…. but by the end of this episode you’ll be just as fascinated by the role food plays on the gridiron as she is. Before we go deep with a look into the diets of football players, we talk tailgating . Imagine hundreds of fans gathered around a stadium – beers in hand, smoke wafting off hundreds of grills, all in anticipation of the big game! We enlist Atlanta chefs Nick Leahy, Rusty Bowers, and Kevin Rathbun to share some of their tailgating pro-tips. Starting with the NFL, we find out how pro players are using food to fuel their recoveries. Many athletes rely on the anti-inflammatory power of plants so much that they go all-in on a vegan diet. We hear from Chef Charity Morgan, a chef who feeds her husband (Derrick Morgan of the Tennessee Titans) and his teammates a plant-based meal plan. Scott Sehnert, the Director of Sports Performance and Sports Dietician for the Dallas Cowboys weighs in on the benefits of plants' phytochemicals in aiding players' recovery. Next we move to college, where Mary Margaret McCartney (our intern-at-large) takes us inside of Auburn University's Wellness Kitchen, a $6.6 million, 10,000 square foot facility designed to provide its athletes with optimal nutrition. She speaks to Lauren Silvio, the Director of Sports Nutrition for Auburn Athletics, about how she works to educate the football team about what food is best to eat on and off campus. And finally, our main story this week is about the largest group of football players in the US – the more than one million high school athletes. We speak to Scout Kirkland, a ninth grader playing football at Eufaula High School in Alabama, and his mom, Corey Kirkland, about advice he received when middle school coaches wanted him to 'bulk up.' It made us wonder: what advice should be given to high school athletes, and who should be giving it to them? To help answer this question, we turn to Laura Moretti, a Dietician for the Division of Sports Medicine and Orthopedics at Boston Children's Hospital. Love Meat + Three? Sunny Stalter-Pace is an Assistant Professor in the department of English. Her book "Underground Movements: Modern Culture on the New York City Subway" explores the many meanings of the subway by looking back at the era when it first ascended to cultural prominence, from its opening in 1904 through the mid-1960s. By analyzing a broad range of texts written during this period, Sunny illustrates the subway's central importance as a site of abstract connection, both between different parts of the city and between city dwellers who ride the train together.
