In this episode, host Carry Kim engages with Maya Khosla, a wildlife biologist, writer, poet, and filmmaker, to discuss the intricate relationship between fire and forest ecosystems. Together, they explore the regeneration of giant sequoias after wildfires and the importance of embracing fire as a catalyst for biodiversity rather than a destructive force. Maya shares her experiences documenting post-fire environments and the vital role they play in supporting wildlife. This episode invites listeners to rethink their perceptions of fire and its impact on nature, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of our interdependence with the environment. What are the potentials for responding to and relating with fire in a balanced and beneficial versus fearful and apprehensive way? Because fire is feared by many and much misunderstood, post-fire or snag forests are often clear-cut or heavily logged, and then turned into biomass or wood pellets burned for electricity. Living trees that are recovering post-fire can also be cut; trees are sometimes wrongly cut in anticipation of fire. Snag forests are a precious habitat, supporting the intricacies of restoration and biodiversity in the wake of fire; assisting in the thriving of many species, from fungi to black-backed woodpeckers, owls, weasels, bobcats, bears and countless more. Dr. Chad Hanson, wildfire scientist and fire ecologist based in California on the fires in LA over the past few days.
In this hour, Kurt Couchman from Americans for Prosperity discusses the pressing need for a balanced budget amendment to address the federal government's fiscal crisis. He highlights how a well-crafted amendment could restore fiscal discipline. Marc and Kim also cover the etiquette of reply-all emails, a cancelled pheasant hunting trip before the election, and the benefits of leaf mulching for soil health. To wrap up the hour, Chad Hanson from Hanson's Tree Service joins to talk about their winter discounts and the benefits of their custom-made mulch for the garden.
Like it or not, fire politics affects every aspect of public forest policy and the rural landscape, and that is not changing anytime soon. But is science or politics guiding the policy? Are management decisions being made with forest ecology and community resilience as the top priorities, or are certain actors using fire as a smoke screen to score political wins, enrich wealthy mill owners, and prop up an outdated ideology that wants to turn public forests into tree plantations? More relevant to today's conversation, what is the best available science actually telling us about fire and forest health? About how, if, when, and why to take an active role in shaping forest landscapes with fire, healthy forest ecology, and fire resilient communities in mind?I'm joined today by Dr Kimberley Davis from the Forest Service's Missoula Fire Sciences Lab, and Dr Kerry Metlen, Senior Forest Scientist for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon. They are two of the lead co-authors of a meta-analysis published this year examining the effects of thinning, prescribed fire, and wildfire on subsequent wildfire severity in dry type conifer forests of the Western US.They are an absolute wealth of knowledge and I was so appreciative of their ability to get into the complexities of their research in a way that was engaging and understandable.Research Links/Show Notes:Tamm Review: https://research.fs.usda.gov/treesearch/67659Summarized version with graphics: https://www.fs.usda.gov/rm/pubs_journals/rmrs/sycu/2024/sycu_photos_2024_10_treatments.pdfAlternative Take on the Paper from Andy Kerr: https://www.andykerr.net/kerr-public-lands-blog/2024/8/30/rethinking-commercial-thinning-as-a-tool-to-ecologically-restore-frequent-fire-forest-types-part-2-burn-baby-burnStorymap mentioned by Kerry: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/64f55848f690452da6c58e5a888ff283Coast Range Radio fire episodes:Is the Forest Serviec Falsifying the Scientific Record, w Chad Hanson: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1046044/episodes/13024030Taxing Big Timber to Protect Communities from Wildfire: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1046044/episodes/14354418Support the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

Sequoias are among the oldest living things on Earth, and most of the world's sequoias are in Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks. Since 2020, according to the National Park Service, almost 20% of that iconic species have been destroyed by wildfires. The parks' management is planning to repopulate the burned-over areas with thousands of sequoia seedings, in an effort to rebuild six groves. But not everyone supports this project: some ecologists argue that there are enough seedlings growing in those groves to provide the next generation of trees. Join host Ronnie Lipschutz to hear about the pros and cons from Dr. Christy Brigham, Chief of resources management and science at the two national parks and one of the architects of the plan, and from Dr. Chad Hanson, cofounder of the John Muir Project, who is a critic of the plan. Contemporary Western fire science is integrating what Indigenous Peoples discovered over thousands of years of observation, and trial and error: fire is key to optimizing forest vitality and biodiversity. The merging of these two ways of knowing could signal the end to our misguided policy of fire suppression, and the beginning of fire-resilient communities with a new relationship to one of nature's most elemental and fearful forces. With fire ecologists Chad Hanson and Frank Kanawha Lake. This is an episode of the Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature series. Visit the radio and podcast homepage to learn more.
From the tragedy in Hawaii — which has left at least 115 dead, and over a thousand more missing, making it the deadliest blaze in the last century of US history — to recent fires in Canada, California, Indonesia and Brazil, the world seems to be engulfed in a megafire crisis fueled by climate change. We bring on a panel of practitioners to discuss what's behind these megafires, and how we can work to mitigate the crisis. Matt Weiner is the CEO of the nonprofit Megafire Action, with a background in policymaking; Lenya Quinn-Davidson is Director of University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Fire Network; and Chad Hanson is the Director of the John Muir Project of Earth Island Institute, a research and advocacy organization focused on federal public forestlands. Wildfires are a fact of life in the American west. They have played a major role in our western ecosystems for millenia. But as the climate crisis deepens, and more people move into wildfire country, fires loom larger and larger in the public consciousness. Wildfires are reshaping everything from our landscapes to our politics, and the implications of how we respond to them will play a huge role in shaping our future. In the midst of this, a scientific debate is raging over what the science tells us about how to protect communities and live with fire. At the heart of that debate is the Forest Service. As the manager of almost 200 million acres of land, there is a tremendous amount at stake in how the US Forest Service interprets that science and implements management policy. So I'm excited to be joined by one of the authors of a new scientific paper alleging that the forest service has been falsifying the scientific record around wildfires in order to justify more logging on federal lands.Chad Hanson is the director and principal ecologist for the California based John Muir Project, which he co-founded in the 90s. The megafire narrative . . . Wherever you live, you likely depend on forest ecologies. Even though the western U.S. has gotten a lot of press for wildfires, fire affects us all, forest integrity affects us all, and ecological ignorance affects us all. In this dialogue with Chad Hanson, forest ecologist and director of the John Muir Project, we confront the megafire myths and the bad science done in the name of forest ecology. Chad's book, Smokescreen: Debunking Wildfire Myths to Save Our Forests and Our Climate (University of Kentucky Press), serves as the framework for our dialogue. This is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it. It reads like a great mystery tale, and Chad gets to the bottom of the downright dastardly intrigues that perpetuate and sow seeds of ecological ignorance while putting us all at risk. This dialogue covers some of the most important ideas in the book, and it serves as an excellent way to begin to heal from unskillful views and limited perceptions. You're in for a treat.

As California wildfires ravaged the state, we talk with Dr. Chad Hanson, to examine if there is any scientific basis to support the numerous calls to clear the forest as a way of helping reduce fire risk.
This week Dr. Chad Hanson, a forest and fire ecologist, with the John Muir Project, joins us. Dr. Hanson is a member of the Sierra Club's National Board of Directors and he holds a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of California at Davis, with a research focus on fire ecology in conifer forest ecosystems. He is the co-editor and co-author of the 2015 book, "The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature's Phoenix." Studies published by Dr. Hanson cover topics such as: habitat selection of rare wildlife species associated with habitat created by high-severity fire; post-fire conifer responses and adaptations; fire history; and current fire patterns. Join us during this difficult week to learn about what happens in a post fire habitat, why fire is an ecological treasure, not a disaster, how significantly climate change will impact wildfires, and why both politicians and the United States Forest Service have a vested interest in spreading misinformation when it comes to forest management. " http://johnmuirproject.org Music by Itasca Action Points + Call your state's U.S. Senators and Congressional Representatives at the Capital Switchboard (202-224-3121) and ask them to (1) Keep the Appropriation Bill and the Farm Bill clean – keep all logging provisions off these two bills and appose any logging riders on these bills. Specifically ask them to keep the "Forest Resilience Bill" or H.R.2936 off of the Farm Bill reauthorization. (2) Ask them to support an end to any logging on National Forests and commit publicly to saying they are in support of ending logging on National Forests.

Contemporary Western fire science is integrating what Indigenous Peoples discovered over thousands of years of observation, and trial and error: fire is key to optimizing forest vitality and biodiversity. The merging of these two ways of knowing could signal the end to our misguided policy of fire suppression, and the beginning of fire-resilient communities with a new relationship to one of nature’s most elemental and fearful forces. With fire ecologists Chad Hanson and Frank Kanawha Lake.

Dr. Chad Hanson is a forest fire ecologist from the John Muir Earth Island Institute and he believes the current logging bill before Congress will eliminate forest plan standards and open the forests up to clearcutting without any environmental analysis or public comment. Is this a sop to the logging industry? This is an important … Continue reading EP 66 WHY CONGRESS IS DEAD WRONG ABOUT FOREST FIRES

A new study by the John Muir Project shows that fire does important ecological work in forests and it may be time to re-think our federal policy on logging and forest fire suppression. Chad Hanson is a forest fire ecologist and author of the book – The Ecological Importance of Mixed Severity Fires. In this edition of In The Author's Voice, WSIU's Jeff Williams talks with Hanson about the study's findings and his work as a forest fire ecologist.

Wildfires, large and small, have been an essential part of Western landscapes for millennia. And now a growing body of research is showing how most of the traditional fire-control methods we have been employing for nearly a century — like logging dense forests to thin them and removing dead trees so that the fire can't spread — can actually be counterproductive and ecologically damaging. How so? To explain that and to talk about how we can, and must, learn to coexist better with wildfires, Show host and Earth Island Journal editor, Maureen Nandini Mitra, talks with Chad Hanson, wildfire ecologist and director of John Muir Project – a nonprofit that that uses science and legal means to push for ecological management of federal forestlands and Maya Khosla, a biologist and environmental filmmaker who has been documenting birds in the California Rim Fire Area since 2014. The post Living With Wildfires appeared first on KPFA.

“In our region fire is to dry forests as rain is to rainforests; both are important in the life of a forest to provide clean water, climate stabilization, hunting and fishing, outdoor recreation and wildlife habitat. A fire does not destroy a forest; rather, it simply resets nature's clock as it has been doing for millennia,” said Chad Hanson, Director and Ecologist with the John Muir Project, Earth Island Institute, and co-editor of “The Ecological Importance of Mixed-Severity Fires: Nature's Phoenix”
