Granger Smith, also known by his alter ego, Earl Dibbles Jr., is an American Southern Baptist minister, former country music singer and songwriter, and a New York Times bestselling author. He continues to share his personal testimony to fans across the globe through his book Like a River: Finding the Faith and Strength to Move Forward After Loss and Heartache. After the tragic loss of his son, River, Smith set forth on an inescapable path of discovery towards God's grace and mercy. In this episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner sits down with country music artist Granger Smith. Granger opens up about the challenges he faced after securing a book deal that put a target on his back. He shares his struggles and thoughts of quitting, as well as the decision he made to persevere despite potential consequences. Granger draws powerful insights from his experiences with wild mustangs, emphasizing the importance of surrendering control and finding strength in acknowledging that we are not the highest power.  The conversation dives into the keys to successful relationships, the power of forgiveness, and finding worthiness in the gospel. Granger also shares personal anecdotes, including a traumatic period in his life and a turning point on a music tour that brought him a sense of normalcy.  Granger Smith then shares his own struggles with worthiness and self-doubt, particularly in accepting a book deal without the traditional credentials. However, he discovers that worthiness is not based on personal achievements or the absence of sin. Instead, it lies in the understanding that we are created for a purpose and that our identity as children of God offers forgiveness, restoration, and a sense of worthiness. This reminder allows us to overcome past mistakes and embrace the assurance of redemption. Throughout the conversation, Granger Smith emphasizes that successful relationships require trust, listening, and commitment. Too often, we are overwhelmed with options, hindering our ability to make a calculated decision. Granger encourages narrowing down our choices and prioritizing these key factors. By doing so, we can cultivate stronger connections and meaningful relationships. Granger draws inspiration from his experiences with wild mustangs, emphasizing that surrendering control is not a sign of weakness. Just like a horse with immense power can trust its master and run into battle without pulling up until commanded to, surrendering control allows us to acknowledge that there is a higher power at work. In recognizing this, we find strength, peace, and clarity. www.thedadedge.com/451 www.thedadedge.com/alliance  www.grangersmith.com www.instagram.com/grangersmith

Elise’s guest today is Sonya Spaziani, also known as “Mustang Meg.” She is a mustang and wild burro advocate who is renowned for her work to educate the public on the status of these animals in the American West.   Currently, 75,000 wild horses and burros are caught in political, emotional, and environmental controversy. Another 45,000 are held in government holding pens, costing the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) nearly $50 million annually. It is estimated that there are more wild horses in captivity now than exist in the wild — with more round-ups scheduled regularly. Wild horse advocacy has become one of the largest grassroots efforts in U.S. history — a touchpoint for horse enthusiasts, conservationists, ranchers, and even politicians.   In the midst of this volatility, Mustang Meg is respected not only for her expertise but also for her willingness to partner, as a steadfast advocate, with all sides on behalf of the horses she so devotedly works to protect.   In this episode, Elise and Sonya discuss sustainable solutions for managing and taking care of wild horses, the status of fertility control, land management and herd management, how to help horses in long-term holding facilities, and Sonya’s predictions and hopes for the future of wild mustangs and burros.   Topics of Discussion: [:45] About Elise’s guest today. [1:41] What should people know about wild mustangs? [4:23] Some stories of the special horses Sonya has witnessed from her research out on the field. [10:31] What keeps Sonya going through the rough conditions she endures for field research and photos. [13:51] The measure of success wild horse advocates, ranchers, Oregon BLM representatives have accumulated in behalf of mustangs. [17:40] How does Sonya think we find a common place from which to have a reasonable dialogue and does she think there’s a sustainable solution that everyone can accept? [21:37] Reading listener feedback! [23:29] The status of fertility control and why wild horses cannot always be darted with PZP (birth control). [28:37] Is there a reason why gelding stallions has not been brought to the conversations of fertility control? [32:20] Does Sonya foresee a point in time where we might not have wild horses left because of all of the increase in horses being held in government holding pens? [33:45] All about the complicated issues that come with land management and herd management. [40:53] Is the BLM the primary resource for determining the status of the mustang’s well-being? To what degree do advocates partner with them to ensure this? [42:52] What can we do to help horses in the long-term holding facilities? Is there a plan going forward? [49:28] Rachel’s insight into ranchers, corporations, and grazing on public land. [53:58] A preview of next week’s Because of Horses. [55:11] Sonya’s predictions and hopes for the future of wild mustangs and burros. Elise’s guest on today’s Because of Horses helps save hundreds of wild Mustangs every year, in the process also providing life skills and hope to the prisoners who volunteered to gentle them.   Randy Helm heads up the Wild Horse and Burro Inmate Program within the Arizona Department of Corrections. Randy supervises and trains about 40 prisoners, and over 500 horses and burros, ensuring the animals' careful gentling and making it possible for them to leave BLM's holding facilities and get adopted into loving homes.   And while it wasn't initially the program's focus, the very nature of working with horses has been incredibly beneficial to the prisoners, themselves – giving them hope for life after prison, building their self-confidence, helping them connect with other living beings, and teaching them life skills that many were never before exposed to. The outstanding results speak for themselves: while about 40% of Arizona prisoners will be back behind bars within three years of their release, those who participate in Randy’s wild horse training program have a recidivism rate of less than 15%.   This episode, Elise and Randy discuss the program's role in saving wild Mustangs and providing them with a shot at new lives, the changes he sees in the prisoner-trainers, and why rehabilitating horses – and men – is so important to him... a former narcotics officer, life-long rancher, and devoted horseman.   Topics of Discussion: [1:23] The changes Randy sees in prisoners as they participate in the program. [2:28] How are inmates selected to participate? [3:48] The inmates' varied backgrounds. [4:11] Why the program requires prisoners to have their high school diploma or be working toward their GED. [6:42] How the program guides inmates toward self-improvement. [7:48] Why Randy believes these programs with horses are so meaningful. [9:38] What Randy has observed in the interactions between the horses and the inmates — especially in the early days. [11:16] The program's objective and the bond between horses and inmates. [13:20] Teaching the inmates to work with the horses’ nature through low-resistance training and natural horsemanship. [18:40] The important, teachable moments between the inmates and horses. [21:48] Reading listener feedback! [23:38] What the program looks like on a day-to-day basis and how it helps prisoners develop a strong work ethic. [25:45] The stats don’t lie — the program's impressive success rate. [27:34] How Randy’s own life experiences have been critical in providing a good background for the work he is doing today. [20:10] How Randy drew from his past experiences to coach former inmates to avoid the habits that led to their incarceration. [30:48] The many roles required by Randy's job. [32:20] Why Randy believes wild Mustangs tend to take to Border Patrol fairly easily — sometimes even better than a domesticated Quarter Horse. [39:18] Other ways Mustangs can be better accustomed to trails and different types of environments. [40:44] The complex issue of managing the wild Mustang and how the program helps. [43:17] How the horses are selected for the program. [45:50] From start to finish, what training wild Mustangs is usually like. Elise’s guest today is Alan Day -- author, owner and operator of the first sanctuary for wild Mustangs, and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's brother. As a third-generation cattleman and rancher, Alan’s upbringing branded him a cowboy from the day he was born. Growing up on his family’s historic 200,000-acre Lazy B Ranch cemented his love for the land and for horses. And his love for books and a story well-told led him to become the best-selling author that he is today.   Ranching and the cowboy life is — as he says — in his blood. So, after graduating from the University of Arizona, he returned to manage the Lazy B for the next 40 years, along with his two other massive ranches (in Nebraska and South Dakota).   Alan embodies all that is good about the American West's cowboy code — putting in a hard day’s work, not quitting until the job is done, never complaining about the hand you were dealt, being good for your word, being a good steward of the land, and putting your horses’ needs and well-being before your own. He also embodies the cowboy tradition for telling great stories, from hanging out for a couple days with Kevin Costner (not a movie-goer, Alan had no idea who the actor was, but thought he was "a nice fella"), to literally being hung from a hook on the front porch of his family's bunkhouse by a World War II vet who'd had enough of his five-year-old pestering... Alan shares a fascinating world of experiences.   You’ll love listening in to hear Alan reminisce on his days of growing up on and managing the historic Lazy B, founded in 1880, including his grandfather's narrow escape from Apache,  as well as Alan's years managing 1,500 wild mustangs — and how he poured his heart into caring for them and the land in his keeping   Topics of Discussion: [1:37] Alan recalls the days of growing up on his family’s ranch and some of the lessons he learned. [6:03] A story about his first cattle drive when he was five years old. [14:06] A story about Alan’s grandfather, who settled the ranch in 1880. [16:17] Commenter shout-outs! (Reading commenter’s comments!) [18:22] What the history and heritage of Alan’s family’s ranch mean to him. [19:53] A working ranch in the truest sense; only a family’s hard work to take care of the ranch. [24:24] Alan’s ingenuity on the ranch. [28:45] How Alan views his legacy. [31:25] What it means to be a cowboy and an important lesson for those who manage land. [34:22] About Alan’s book and how his co-author helped present his stories. [36:00] The process of creating Mustang Meadow Ranch and the motivation that led him to it. [38:19] An excerpt from Alan’s book about the creation of Mustang Meadow Ranch from The Horse Lover. [39:58] What Alan learned from the people who handle rounded-up mustangs right off the range (the BLM). [42:23] How Alan applied what he learned from herding cattle to the group of wild mustangs he was working with. [46:10] The critical lesson in learning how to manage the wild mustangs; making friends and moving them without panic. [48:00] What makes a mustang unsuitable for adoption? [50:31] What Alan wishes the average American understood about the current situation with mustangs throughout the West. [55:50] Pieces of advice from Cowboy Up! and some of the stories behind them. This month on Animal Matters Radio, Madeleine Pickens http://www.madeleinepickens.com/ joins Certified Equine Specialist from EAGALA & Executive Director and Co-Founder - Spring Reins of Hope, Christianna Capra (http://springreinsofhope.com/ ) and Healer Gabriela Castillo (http://www.gabrielacastillo.com/index.html) to talk about saving part of our American Heritage; The Wild Mustangs. Madeleine's point of view includes - "The American public, as well as the Congress, has made it clear that wild horses on federal land are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the American West and must be protected. Although it is the government’s obligation and duty to carry out this mandate, it is worthwhile to explore a public/private partnership to accomplish this goal. If we can together establish a plan for the permanent retirement and care of these magnificent animals, it will be a legacy that all Americans can be proud of. My view is for a wild horse sanctuary that will be a tourist destination similar to our National Parks where Americans and tourists from around the world can come, observe and be a part of this great part of American history. We can use this treasure to promote eco-tourism and at the same time provide for permanent retirement and management of these American icons to which we owe so much. I, myself, am an immigrant to America and came because of America’s freedoms, can do attitude, and respect for its open spaces and natural heritage of which these wild horses are a part. I look forward to being a part of preserving this for generations to come."
