Sometimes you just have to be willing to follow your passions and lean into what you don't know. When Stacy Ward-Lattin and her husband, Torrey, started the Hopping Gnome taproom 6 years ago, they had no idea the adventure they were in for. Stacy joins hosts Don and Ebony to share the Hopping Gnome story, from home brewing to deciding to create something brand new in Wichita. On this episode we discuss: The upcoming 6th anniversary celebration of Hopping Gnome Home brewing competitions Touring the taproom scene in Colorado Wanting to build something in Wichita and help the community Being a cheerleader for activities and events around town Starting a business with zero business background Overcoming the fear of talking about their business idea to get support from others Coming up with the right name and location Relationships with other local brewers in Wichita The reason they used Kickstarter to help launch New partnership with WSU Tech Surviving the COVID-19 pandemic by getting creative and working with the Kansas legislature Ceiling Breakers Podcast All the great things women are doing in the Wichita community Growing new relationships Supporting local artists Learn more about Hopping Gnome:www.hoppinggnome.comFacebook ProfileInstagram ProfileTwitter ProfileCeiling Breakers Podcast Torrey Lattin started home brewing over 6 years ago, and after a couple of years decided to work on a business plan in order to help grow the number of breweries in Wichita. At the time, there were only two brewery/restaurants in the area, and after traveling to Colorado and visiting the small and unique taprooms there, Torrey and his wife Stacy decided this concept would be something fresh and new in Wichita, KS.They decided on a small taproom with a 5 BBL brewing system and distribution plan rather than a restaurant in order to create a beer-focused atmosphere, where friends can get together and play games, order in a pizza, and hang out like it's your friend's house (except you have to pay for the beer...we're trying to run a business here). The couple had several names in mind, but most were already taken or too similar to other established breweries across the US. One night, Torrey was having a beer at home, and noticed a give-away from the 2012 Kansas City Royals All Star game that was a little gnome. He ran upstairs and said “how about Hopping Gnome? You know like hops, and gnomes are known for drinking.” The name stuck and after finding a local graphic designer to create the awesome logo, Hopping Gnome Brewing Company was born. Located in the up-and-coming Douglas Design District, Hopping Gnome Brewing Company joined the growing craft beer community as the first taproom in Wichita, KS.Thanks for listening, be sure to subscribe and leave us a review! Evergy is changing the way it charges for electrical usage beginning in October, moving from a flat rate to one based on demand at different times of day.
If you missed it this week, we learned that Evergy says they will have to keep a coal plant open they wanted to convert to natural gas. It's in the most liberal city in Kansas to create power to make electric vehicle batteries in Desoto. What? Oh, and your tax dollars for "inflation reduction" will pay for all of it. In Wyoming, the feds gave $1.1 million last year for electric buses that are now toast in one of the greatest places to visit on earth. Good luck getting up the slopes this winter. And the Chiefs are rolling to the Big Apple in a game everyone thinks is about to be a beat down. Lee Sterling of www.paramountsports.com is here with that point spread pick along with MU/KU and the AFC.

In October, Evergy will force customers to choose between new electricity plans that implement time-of-use pricing, which places a premium on electricity prices at times of high demand. Under the default plan, power used from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in summer months will cost four times more than other hours.

But surprisingly, the Freddy's story doesn't begin with dessert. It all started with a main course back in the 1950's. Wichita, Kansas is a historical landmark in the hamburger's march to prominence and home to WWII veteran Freddy Simon. The savory steakburger is inspired by the 50's style staple and reminiscent of an era focused on quality, cooked-to-order meals that bring families and loved ones together. Freddy's sons Randy and Bill Simon, and accomplished restauranteur, Scott Redler, worked tirelessly to recreate the recipe that lived up to the timeless standards of their Father's generation. Today, thousands gather at Freddy's for food and fellowship that fills their stomach and warms their soul.Growing up in St. Louis, Redler got his start in the restaurant business at age 15 catering events for groups of two to 6,000. Paying his way through college by managing a steakhouse, he attended the University of Missouri and earned a degree in restaurant and hotel management. Redler has managed and overseen everything from 5-star restaurants to corporate cafeterias in Wichita, St. Louis, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. Overall, Redler has been involvedin development and operations of 21 varying concepts.
