We invited Sen. Kristin Roers to this episode of Plain Talk to discuss the debate over term limits reforms making their way through the Legislature in Bismarck, but before we turned to that topic, I asked Roers about recent comments made by state Rep. Brandon Prichard about her former colleage Rep. Josh Christy. Christy passed away during the current legislative session. He served in Fargo-area District 27 alongside Roers. When the District 27 Republicans approved the appointment of Rep. T.J. Brown to replace Christy, Prichard, through his group Citizens Alliance of North Dakota, took credit for the move, claiming falsely that Brown had won a "special election" and celebrating his replacing Christy, who was a moderate. "I just found it disgusting," Roers said, accusing Prichard of "trying to take credit" for something "he had absoultely nothing to do with." Roers said that she has spoken with Rep. Brown, who indicated that Prichard and his group had nothing to do with his appointment. As for term limits, there are several proposals before the Legislature. House Concurrent Resolutoin 3034, Senate Concurrent Resolution 2028, and Senate Concurrent Resoluton 4008 would each amend the state constitution to change the voter-initiated term limits to 12 years, or three terms, instead of 8 years, or two terms. Roers, though, says she introduced an amendment to SCR4008, specifically, which would go a bit further. Her amendment would allow lawmakers to serve for a total of four terms, or 16 years, regardless of which chamber they're in. She argued that this was closer to what voters approved, which allows a person to serve for as many as eight years in each chamber. The Roers amendment simply allows those 16 years already allowed to be served entirely in a single chamber. She also included some language making it so that lawmakers, such as Brown, who are appointed to partial terms, or who are elected to a two-year term after redistricting, can still serve four full terms. Also on this episode, Dr. Aimee Copas, executive director of the North Dakota Council of Education Leaders, talks about the property tax debate, the school choice debate, and recently-released test results showing that North Dakota students are testing at some of the highest levels in the world. Recent NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) testing had North Dakota students with scores that "put us on part with some of the best scores globally." She also warned that North Dakota lawmakers aren't preparing for dramatic budget cuts that could result from President Donald Trump's dramatic and chaotic push to slash federal spending. Posobiec explained: "This is like watching the election results in North Korea." 4:50pm- While examining polling results, CNN Analyst Harry Enten revealed that Donald Trump has recorded his “highest ever favorable rating at 40%,” according to ABC News/Ipsos. Meanwhile, Quinnipiac University has his favorability rating at 46%. Most polls have Kamala Harris at 38%. 5:05pm- Will Joe Biden Resign Tonight?: On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre held her first press briefing since President Joe Biden announced he would withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. When the tyrants of Tehran who hang gays from cranes and murder women for not covering their hair are praising, promoting, and funding you, you have officially become Iran's useful idiots." 5:30pm- In the days since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and selected Kamala Harris to be his successor, clips have emerged of Harris advocating for some truly bizarre policies—including a ban on fracking, a mandatory gun buyback initiated via executive authority, placing a limit on red meat consumption, providing universal health care with taxpayer funded care provided to undocumented migrants in the country illegally, and the complete abolition of private health insurance.   5:45pm- What's Kamala Harris' favorite pizza topping? Turns out it's anchovies! Plus, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has crashed! Thankfully no one was injured.   6:05pm- On Monday, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee—revealing new details about the July 13th assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump. Wray explained that "On July 6th, [shooter Thomas Crooks] did a Google search for 'how far away was Oswald from Kennedy?' and so that's a search that obviously is significant in terms of his state of mind...that is the same day that it appears that he registered for the Butler rally." 6:20pm- In the days since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and selected Kamala Harris to be his successor, clips have emerged of Harris advocating for some truly bizarre policies—including a ban on fracking, a mandatory gun buyback initiated via executive authority, placing a limit on red meat consumption, providing universal health care with taxpayer funded care provided to undocumented migrants in the country illegally, and the complete abolition of private health insurance.   6:30pm- On Monday, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee—revealing new details about the July 13th assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump. Due to a scheduling mix-up with Attorney General Drew Wrigley -- he was coming on to discuss North Dakota's legal position in redistricting lawsuits -- this episode of Plain Talk was truncated. Brandon Prichard and his federal political action committee Citizens Alliance of North Dakota, which has been running some wildly inaccurate ads and, Hagen alleges, may be violating federal rules on independent candidates colluding with candidates. Hagen also said he's concerned about Rep. Prichard shuffling money between political committees he's founded, arguing that money may be used for purposes the donors didn't intend. A civil war is playing out in the North Dakota Republican Party between traditionally conservative Republicans and MAGA-aligned populists. One front in that war is the NDGOP's legislative primaries, where a group called Citizens Alliance of North Dakota is trying to defeat traditional Republicans. State Rep. Brandon Prichard, a Republican from Bismarck, is the executive director of Citizens Alliance. His group has been sending mailers to voters suggesting that its preferred candidates in the primaries are backed by incumbents who do not support actually them. One of the candidates targeted by these tactics, Rep. Jeremy Olson, a first-termer from District 26 who is seeking another term in the state House, joined this episode of Plain Talk. THE WAR ON ENERGY CONTINUES   "The Obama administration took aim at the coal industry on Monday by mandating a 30 percent cut in carbon emissions at fossil fuel-burning power plants by 2030 -- despite claims the regulation will cost nearly a quarter-million jobs a year and force plants across the country to close.  The controversial regulation, which some lawmakers already are trying to block, is one of the most sweeping efforts to tackle global warming by this or any other administration.   The 645-page plan, expected to be finalized next year, is a centerpiece of President Obama's climate change agenda, and a step that the administration hopes will get other countries to act when negotiations on a new international treaty resume next year.   "We have a moral obligation to act," EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said, in announcing the plan Monday morning.   Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who represents Kentucky, called it a "dagger in the heart of the American middle class" -- and predicted higher power costs and less reliable energy as a result. McConnell's general election opponent, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, also spoke out against the plan.   The draft regulation sidesteps Congress, where Obama's Democratic allies have failed to pass a so-called "cap-and-trade" plan to limit such emissions.   Under the plan, carbon emissions would be reduced 30 percent by 2030, compared with 2005 levels. The proposal sets off a complex regulatory process in which the 50 states will each determine how to meet customized targets set by the EPA. States could have until 2017 to submit a plan to cut power plant pollution, and 2018 if they join with other states to tackle the problem, according to the EPA's proposal."
