Unlike place names, which often give us information who once lived somewhere, street names can be a different case entirely. Sometimes they bear the names of notable (and often now infamous) people. Other times they refer to long-gone industries performed in the area - you can guess what happened on Cock Lane in London, site of the Cock Lane Poltergeist in 1762. Or street names might be the last remains of a now-dead language. Yet the continual building of new streets also sees the creation of new names more fitting to the time. Newcastle upon Tyne's Great Park development features a Sir Bobby Robson Way. Given the different ways these street names can come about, let's explore the origins of some unusual street names in the UK and US in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Scratching Fanny, the unfortunately named ghost of Cock Lane in Central London (also known as Frances Kent and Frances Lynes). Also unfortunately (and confusingly) named were Willy Kent, Fanny's ‘husband' and Richard ‘Dick' Parsons, Willy's pal. Willy and Fanny had a secret and Willy shared that secret with Dick which may not have been the best idea as Dick owed Willy money. All of this escalated as Fanny met an unfortunately premature passing but was that passing natural? Dick thought not and brought in a holy man to verify this. Willy was not happy, particularly as Fanny begun attending seances from beyond. Was Fanny using her knockers to communicate her untimely passing to the living, or was Dick stretching Fanny's truth? It's probably worth mentioning at this point that some of us got very confused during the recording of this episode. Apologies, folks. It all made sense in the end but we guess the moral of the story here is that you can have too much Dick and Willy. Alongside that chaotic mess, we discover that you can indeed trust a John. All that and more on this week's file. It is a doozy this week folks! Liv tells the story of a young girl plagued by a spirit, who captivated Georgian England. Jess is actually cooperative, which is weird. So weird in fact, that Liv can't speak - fabulous when she's trying to tell the story. We talk about respecting all entities, the protective power of blankets, and that Jess doesn't trust Lunchables for some reason. Oh, we're also NOT comfortable using legal jargon in everyday life and I did say dojo. Do not be a mirror, be an energy laundering queen besties!! PERIOD! Happy Thursday!! Today Morgan starts us off by covering the Ghost of Cock Lane... yes, we know it sounds kind of dirty, but that is because IT IS! A 1700s Loan Officer seems to carry a curse that causes every woman he has ever loved to die, while also getting scammed time and time again! Before he knows it, Will finds himself at the center of a paranormal investigation from the Scratchy Fanny, but we prefer the underground shoemaker DJ of Cock Lane! Find out why Aunt Mary continued to lose it, and five people went to jail for defamation before you tell us what the heck you think was going on down Cock Lane! Taylar then wraps us up with the final part of Mike William's case after leaving us on a massive cliff hanger last week! After 18 years of searching for the truth, his mother, Cheryl was able to "make a deal with the devil" (as according to Investigators that made the deal for her) in order to bring her son justice and learn the TRUTH of what happened all those years ago! WE LOVE YOU, BESTIES! Next week is Tay's 25th Bday ep, so be prepared for some season 1 level unhinged "cases"! BYEEE! When William Kent got his sister in law pregnant, the last thing on his mind was his dead wife. That all changed though when strange noises were heard from the house that he lived in and accusations of murder, which came from beyond the grave, were banded about. Sounds like a Japanese motorcycle, 'Itchyfanny', but it's no joke to the people involved in this 18th Century haunting, that started with a 'murder' and ended with prison, fines and a stint in the stocks. It is off to a small street in London this week to look for a ghost. A tale of sex, death, money and betrayal that required investigation from a super team of professionals, the Cock Lane haunting captured the imagination of the Georgian public... well, for a month or so at least. Was it real? Was it a hoax? And what was the interest rate on a 13 Guinea loan in 1760? We answer these questions and more!Guest Host: Ollie Green**with special guests: a group of youths revving their dirt bikes. Is this our rudest episode title yet? Cock Lane is a small street in the City of London, infamous for not having a ghost in it. Alasdair introduces James to the "Scratching Fanny" behind the Cock Lane haunting, and the Lorebois go on to encounter a plethora of poltergeists (ahem... polterguys). This episode features celebrity cameos from Anne Robinson and Roger Moore, plus a pair of graveyard ghosts having a truly royal rumble. We also tiptoe around the gruesome legend of King Edward II's horrible end's horrible end. Loreboys nether say die! Nearly a hundred years before the modern spiritualism movement swept the globe and the infamous Fox sisters fooled a whole community with their toe-clicking séances, another ghostly phenomenon shook 18th century London. It's a story filled with sex, lies, scandal, and murder, that almost ended with an innocent man swinging from a rope. Today we are talking about the Cock Lane Ghost. The Lady Dicks dick-tect history, mystery, and paranormal tales from around the world. Hello everyone! We are covering the Cock Lane ghost this week, which we are still not entirely convinced is not just one huge joke. We also discuss the Black Shuck which I think are just misunderstood hellhounds. Stay spooky my friends!
In 1759, ghostly rappings started up in the house of a parish clerk in London. In the months that followed they would incite a scandal against one man, an accusation from beyond the grave. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Cock Lane ghost, an enduring portrait of superstition and justice. We'll also see what you can get hit with at a sporting event and puzzle over some portentous soccer fields. Intro: In 1967 British artists Terry Atkinson and Michael Baldwin offered a map that charts its own area. In 1904 Henry Hayes suggested adding fake horses to real cars to avoid frightening real horses. Sources for our feature on the Cock Lane Ghost: Douglas Grant, The Cock Lane Ghost, 1965. In 1762, an unusual scandal riveted the population of London: the case of the Cock Lane Ghost. The story had something for everyone. Forbidden love, money, death and the supernatural were all elements in the sad tale of “Scratching Fanny of Cock Lane.” After the death of Fanny Lynes from smallpox, her lover William Kent fell under public suspicion of murder after séances were held to determine who or what was behind the scratching noises coming from the home on Cock Lane. The one person that these noises seemed to be attached to was the young daughter, Elizabeth Parsons, of the landlord who owned the Cock Lane home, and it was determined from these sessions that Fanny had not died from smallpox, but rather arsenic poisoning that Kent had administered to her! After reading the accusations in the press, William Kent vowed to clear his name. He enlisted two of the physicians that had attended Fanny in her last days, as well as a reverend to help hold their own séances, but it wasn't until a maid revealed that she had seen the young daughter sneak out of the séance to get a small stick that the whole thing was exposed as a fraud. Elizabeth Parsons confessed that her father had made her make the scratching noises for him in retaliation of a loan disagreement between the two men. This week, Nat & Aly have the most chaotic recording experience of their lives while telling you all the tale of Scratching Fanny, the Ghost of Cock Lane. First, they had to record in someone's living room. Then, halfway through they had to move to someone's bedroom. It is for this reason that the podcast is just short of an hour this week, but we hope you forgive us. Cock Lane.
William Kent was what some might have called a rather unlucky man. Twice widowed shortly after marriage to his relatively wealthy wives, his relationships had not been the fairy tales he had longed for. The 19th Century was an age where bumping off an unwanted spouse could be as easy as a trip to the local apothecary, and as such, one might have expected William to harbor fears of a few unsavoury rumours surfacing around him, however, when this inevitably did happen in the spring of 1762, his shock could certainly be forgiven when it became apparent that the accusations levelled against him were from none other than the spirit of his recently deceased second wife. This week Brian is back again and we look forward to the new year. One thing to note about 2020 is the Ratio conference in Sofia in Bulgaria in June and that the super early bird tickets already are released. Chris French is going, so why don't you? Then Jelena tells us a ghost story from this week in 1762 that took place in Cock Lane, believe it or not. In Pontus Pokes the Pope we hear about shady monetary shenanigans involving two sitting popes and how the Catholic church is now struggling to live up to the recent changes regarding so-called Papal Secrecy. In the news we talk about the resignation of the Italian education minister, how the NHS in the UK is trying out ‘prehab' for cancer patients and we check back on the Samoan measles emergency. Further news takes us to Russia who has appealed the sanctions imposed because of doping scandals, and we go to Spain where homeopaths are trying to sue the government and then we are happy to hear that the charlatan John of God has been sentenced to 19 years in jail, albeit for rape rather than quackery. We close the show by handing out a Really Wrong Award to the archbishop of Krakow who believes that Greta Thunberg is the antichrist since she will not let him subdue the Earth. Enjoy! William Kent had an unorthodox – for the early 1760s – life, living openly with a woman who was not his wife. Because of this scandal, and other factors, after his “wife's” death in 1762, he is accused of murder by what is – at least on the surface – her ghost. Creepy, Occult & Spooky Series #3 of 4. There wasn’t a soul in London, much less the neighborhood of Smithfield market, who hadn’t heard of the Cock Lane ghost. In 1762, the narrow London street was crowded with throngs of onlookers and busy-bodies who wanted to know if the rumors were true. A young girl at 20 Cock Lane , Elizabeth Parsons, was said to be possessed by a restless spirit. The Cock Lane ghost’s biggest claim to fame was its alleged knocking and scratching at all hours of the night and day. Witnesses devised a code to communicate with the ghost who claimed to have been murdered by her lover two years earlier. This had Londoners up in arms. Everyone took a side. Methodists and Anglicans viciously argued over the possibility of contact with the dead. London newspapers wrote daily updates about the séances, investigations and hearings that sought to uncover the truth behind Scratching Fanny, as the ghost was named, and her suspicious death. Londoners used the mysterious happenings at Cock Lane as a vehicle to debate religious difference, pre-marital sex, fraud, murder, and the vulnerability of some of London’s greatest minds in the face of superstition. On January 12, 1762, William Kent exclaimed to whatever was communicating from beyond the grave in front of the room of people attending the séance, “Thou art a lying spirit, thou are not the ghost of my Fanny. She would never have said any such thing.” There was a ghost haunting a house on Cock Lane in London that was using a young girl to communicate with the living Was it the ghost of William Kent’s deceased lover, Fanny? Maybe it was the spirit of Elizabeth. Elizabeth was Fanny’s sister and married to William before Fanny had become William’s lover. And like Fanny, Elizabeth had gotten pregnant by William and had died soon after. Or maybe there was no ghost at all. Maybe it was just an act of revenge!
