Are you interested in city of NEOM and its history and future? Our summary today works with the book chapter titled The story of NEOM city: opportunities and challenges from 2019 by Alshimaa Aboelmakarem Farag, from the book titled New cities and community extensions in Egypt and the Middle East, published by Springer. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see one of the biggest new city developments and this is a great preparation for the next interview with Richard Morrison. This chapter presents NEOM's history, opportunities and challenges. Plus, I also included the ChatGPT service's summary and pros and cons as a treat at the end of the episode. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: NEOM is planned to be a hub for advanced technology, renewable energy, and innovative industries, and is intended to be a model for future urban development. The biggest opportunities are advanced technology and innovation, sustainability, and quality of life for this project. The biggest challenges are the costs, displacement, political instability, unknown timeline, only branding without substance, economic downturn, and social challenges. You can find the chapter through this link. Abstract: The story of NEOM city starts when the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of NEOM, the futuristic megacity, on the conference “Future Investment Initiative” in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at 24 October 2017. The Project's promoters aspire to brand a new land where a plethora of unique development opportunities that could contribute to make NEOM a global hub for trade, innovation, and knowledge. The creative class around the world has been invited to participate in creating NEOM, with promises of a new life in a beautiful nature free place, and an independent economic zone with its own laws, taxes, regulations, and no restrictions. Future technology in transportation, growing and processing food, healthcare, internet of things, and digital air all should contribute to providing NEOM's residents a unique lifestyle. The project that starts with a fanfare might face a number of challenges, whether at the present or in the future such as the abstention of investor's participation in such a current economic situation in KSA after the decline of world oil price, resistance of conservatives, the neighbors countries' supporting, in addition to the time challenge. There is also a fear of repeating the failed experiments as Saudi kingdom will not be able to bear its costs. The shortage of literature and references has been a big challenge when to write this article in such time, four months after the formal announcement of launching NEOM. However, this article raises several questions and inquires that help to predict future challenges that might face the decision makers and can be addressed if recognized early. You can find the transcript through this link. What wast the most interesting part for you? What questions did arise for you? Photo / Andrew Warner.Morrison Jnr said the "raw and uncompromising insights" could now be told - just over 11 years since Sir Howard died in September 2009.The book, which has been three years in the making, will be launched on Thursday night next week at the Te Puia, the first night of the two-night Howard Morrison Quartet Take Two show paying tribute to Sir Howard.Morrison told the Rotorua Daily Post he and his two siblings, Donna Grant and Richard Morrison, owed a lot to their mother, Lady Kuia Morrison, for what she sacrificed throughout the decades of their father's touring around the world.Lady Morrison suffers from dementia and is now living in Whare Aroha Home and Hospital in Rotorua.The book, which is written in movie script genre, addresses how the family handled Morrison Jnr's concerns about Sir Howard's adultery while on tour.In the book it details a particular conversation where Lady Kuia told Sir Howard she was "sick of your sorrys"."Don't you think I know about all the other women. Chief Executive of the Royal Philharmonic Society, James Murphy talks to Jane Glover about her latest book ‘Handel in London’ Aged 25, Handel arrived in London in 1710 and transformed the musical scene. Whilst London has changed drastically from then, much has remarkably stayed very similar, conductor Jane Glover discusses this in her acclaimed new book ‘Handel in London’. In this special event, co-presented by Wigmore Hall and the Royal Philharmonic Society, James Murphy talks to Jane about the iconic composer, his lasting impact in Britain, and how she draws upon the exploration of his extraordinary life to shape how she performs his music today. Written in elegant prose that wears its author's scrupulous scholarship lightly ... Glover deftly weaves musical analysis into her biographical flow. Her greatest achievement, however, is to give life and music a political and social context. - Richard Morrison, The Times

Tom speaks to Sir Andras Schiff, one of the world's greatest living pianists and also one of the most thoughtful talkers about music. From Hungary but emigrating to Britain as a refugee, he and Tom discuss the changing world and the role of musicians within it, how a concert is more essential than ever and why a whole evening of Brahms is a bad idea. The artist Tom Phillips is a true creative polymath - a painter, gallery curator, singer, quilter, opera composer, set designer and much more. His seminal 1969 opera Irma is all sourced from passages in 'A Humament' - his life's work - and is largely left to the performers to interpret it however they choose. He talks to Tom at his home in Peckham about how he wrote his 'chance opera' and how to decipher the clues found within the libretto. Plus Tom talks to the acclaimed opera director Netia Jones, who is about to stage it in Peckham, about how to start piecing together the puzzle of the opera. The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group are celebrating their 30th birthday and to do so are taking to the city's canals to create a 'Canal Serenade' performed on three narrowboats on the waterways. Tom takes a wander down the Birmingham towpath with BCMG's director Stephan Meier to discover more about the project and meets one of its founders, the cellist Ulrich Heinen, to talk about how the group started. Plus in the week of conductor Simon Rattle taking over at the London Symphony Orchestra, Tom sits down with music journalists Charlotte Higgins and Richard Morrison to ask what he can do for British classical music.

100 Years After Stravinsky's 'Rite,' Can Classical Music Still Shock?

Conducting Business

On May 29, 1913, the Paris premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring provoked a riot: whistling and booing, catcalls and fisticuffs overran the performance and the police were called in to quiet the angry crowd. It became one of the most celebrated scandals in music history. Today, The Rite of Spring is practically an audience favorite and rioting in concert halls is unthinkable. But is this a good thing? Does classical music need more shock value, more scandals? In his latest column for BBC Music Magazine, music critic Richard Morrison argues that classical music needs more Rite-style uproar. "Never in my 30 years as a critic have I witnessed that kind of reaction," Morrison tells host Naomi Lewin in this podcast. "It just struck me that maybe we’re a bit too polite these days and composers aren’t provoking us enough." Composers today rarely seek the label enfant terrible, added Morrison. "I think they rather like to be liked rather than creating an uproar." Leon Botstein, the music director of the American Symphony Orchestra and president of Bard College, believes the reason audiences were shocked by the Rite of Spring was a sense of ownership over a received musical language. Classical music signaled respectability to audiences "and these young composers were sticking their proverbial finger in their eye." But Botstein believes that many of today's concert-goers lack a frame of reference for challenging new music. "The problem is the audience is musically illiterate and therefore if you want to do something very daring and sophisticated you’re presuming a literate audience," said Botstein, who will devote the 2013 Bard Music Festival to Stravinsky. "So there’s very little for a composer to push back on. That’s the dilemma they face." To some extent, it isn't possible to shock audiences because everything seems to have been done. By the 1960s, composers had explored the outer extremes of total Serialism, computer music and John Cage-style chance. The hybrid, postmodern styles embraced by composers in the last two decades, by contrast, are seldom driven by a need to provoke. Even Minimalism, a style that provoked an uproar with the 1973 premiere of Steve Reich's Four Organs, is now part of the mainstream, featured in film scores and TV commercials. Morrison believes that classical music has long shifted between radical and conservative modes. "If you look at the history of classical music, it’s a very fine balance between tradition and revolution," he noted. "You had Haydn and Mozart, who were craftsman in an established tradition. But then you had Beethoven who came and turned everything upside down. You need both polarities." But Botstein doesn't believe that headline-making disturbances are what's needed to move classical music forward in the name of progress. "I don’t think classical music should be about scandal or riots," he argued. "Leave it to football matches, leave it to political rallies. This is an entirely different art form and I think we should walk away from the way Hollywood makes success." Weigh in: Should classical music do more to shock audiences? Is it possible to shock anymore? Take our poll and leave your comments below. .chart_div { width: 600px; height: 300px; } loadSurvey( "music-shocks", "survey_music-shocks");

He's having some password troubles, so I'm posting this on his behalf. Boadicea In 2004, when I challenged Tom Delay at the height of his power, it was seen as a fool's errand. The Majority Leader of the House was considered unassailable. I and my campaign team assailed him nonetheless, because it was a job that needed doing.
