Held at the Kilcornan Walled Garden, Woods and Trails in Clarinbridge, the Western Yards Connacht Backyard Ultra Championship saw 93 runners start, each aiming to run as many laps of the 6.7km looped course as they could. While six runners managed to achieve the magic mark of 24 hours and 100 miles, it was Armagh man Vincent McMath (pictured right) from Crossmaglen who held on to win completing 32 laps - 214.4 kms - over 32 hours, pushed all the way by Paula Wright from Newport, Co. Tipperary, one lap and an hour behind.
All Ireland winner and Gambling Awareness Trust spokesperson Oisín McConville joined us this week. Growing up in Crossmaglen during The Troubles meant Oisín was used to bombs and army presence – His only escape was football and he threw himself into the sport with great success at both county and club level. When he was just 14 Oisín placed his first bet for 50p. By 17, he was being warned by his local bookie that he would develop a problem if he didn't stop betting. Oisín didn't take the advice and gambled for years more, borrowing, stealing and scamming to pay his way, until he realised he needed help after losing a £20,000 loan for a new business in one bet. A new show “The 3:30 at Cheltenham” which explores the issues of gambling addiction opens on the 16th of September in the Civic Theatre Tallaght before going on a national tour of all gambling addiction treatment centres in Ireland throughout October. In May 1991 I walked into Keenan's Bar in Crossmaglen, South Armagh with a superstar American economist who would go on to win the Nobel Prize for a chat about global monetary policy. Joe Stiglitz and myself must have cut two odd figures for the locals...this was South Armagh, at the height of the troubles after all, maybe not the normal chat in Keenans but the barman didn't bat an eyelid. Against the background noise of British Army helicopters taking off from the largest and most fortified base in the North, that conversation changed my professional life. Thirty years later we picked up the discussion where we left off. I hope you enjoy the chat. Maybe it's time to head back to 'Cross for another natter. What goes in to catching a garda killer? In January 2013, Detectives Joe Ryan and Adrian Donohoe from Dundalk garda station were tasked with escorting credit union takings across Cooley Peninsula, on the border with Northern Ireland. The men were ambushed and Garda detective Donohoe was shot dead. What followed was the largest murder investigation in the history of the Irish state. Aaron Brady, a tug from Crossmaglen, was the lead suspect from early in the case. He later vanished. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We don't know how exactly it happened- but it has. Armagh legend Francie Bellew agreed to sit down and take part in his first and only sit-down interview. In a wide ranging conversation we dig into being shy, how he was bundled into a car and brought to Armagh training and his memories of playing in Orange. He's not a fan of modern day football, he hasn't been back at Clones since he retired but his kids are opening the lid on football again. He reveals his toughest ever opponent, battles with Tyrone and how he was tricked! It's not all memories and smiles. The controversial Mickey Linden challenge is debated. Mayobridge played Crossmaglen in the Ulster club final in 2014 and Linden lost two front teeth. He was removed from the field after 14 minutes. Francie reveals they've never talked since. Maybe they will? Francie explains his cult status and although he struggles to understand it- he is aware it's a thing in GAA circles. Quick, witty and surprisingly frank. It's the GAA Social with All-Ireland winner Francie Bellew

'My Son Hunter' is a story that had to be told and our guest this episode was part of this process, Phelim McAleer, along with his wife Ann McElhinney, were the producers for this movie that introduces the debauched world of Hunter Biden to the public. Hearts of Oak have had the privilege of speaking with Garrett Zeigler whose organisation, Marco Polo, has been at the centre of exposing Hunter and his 'Laptop from Hell', and now all that hard work has made it to the big screen. Phelim has never shied away from the big controversial topics, as a journalist he simply follows the clues. He exposed the lies about fracking in his film 'FrackNation' and corrected climate change myths with 'Not Evil Just Wrong'. But with this film he is risking the ire of the most powerful man in the world, former vice president Joe Biden. Phelim McAleer is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker, public speaker, and podcaster. He is a New York Times best-selling author, a playwright and the creator of the verbatim podcasting genre. Phelim, with his wife Ann, are the producers of “My Son Hunter” as well as several other films, plays, and podcasts including FBI Lovebirds: Undercovers, FrackNation, The Ann & Phelim Scoop Podcast, The Harvey Weinstein Trial: Unfiltered Podcast, Mine Your Own Business, and Not Evil Just Wrong. Phelim has produced documentaries for the BBC, CBC (Canada) and RTE (Ireland), as well as two independent feature length documentaries. Before becoming a filmmaker, Phelim was a foreign correspondent for the Financial Times in Eastern Europe, he covered Romania and Bulgaria for The Economist and has covered Ireland for the UK Sunday Times. He began his career in journalism covering the Northern Ireland troubles first as a reporter in Crossmaglen (known as Bandit Country) and then for The Irish News in Belfast. Phelim and his wife Ann founded 'The Unreported Story Society' in 2017 with a mission to tell the stories that the mainstream media ignores through art and modern media. https://unreportedstorysociety.com/ “My Son Hunter” tells the story of the Biden Family Corruption through the eyes of Hunter Biden, starring Laurence Fox, John James and Gina Carano and directed by Robert Davi. https://mysonhunter.com/ Follow Phelim and Ann on Twitter https://twitter.com/PhelimMcAleer?s=20&t=e0tWkCcOo3Nu8dsRWoonkw https://twitter.com/annmcelhinney?s=20&t=SOJdGMjYpsdPWvr1h7NN_g https://twitter.com/AP_Scoop?s=20&t=SOJdGMjYpsdPWvr1h7NN_g Interview recorded 16.9.22 *Special thanks to Bosch Fawstin for recording our intro/outro on this podcast. Allstar nominee Rian O'Neill joins Thomas Niblock and Oisin Mcconville. Rian talks winning an All-Ireland, reputation for being bad, what is a main man and delaing with pressure. Rian brings us into the moment for the summer defining free-kick against Galway- was it better that Sean O'Shea's? Rian also brings us into the mind of a modern day top level gaelic footballer- the aspiration and winning with Crossmaglen. It's been a busy few weeks for Oisin who is now the Wicklow manager- but didn't get the May job along with Ray Dempsey. Did Mayo get it right? Oisin is very clear. It's also the first GAA social since the podcast won sports podcast of the year at the Irish Podcast awards. Thank you, our listeners on BBC Sounds for your support. Words couldn't reflect how grateful the team is for all your support. We're back!!
This is a very open, honest, and captivating conversation with one of football's most gifted players. Oisín McConville has won several Ulster titles, All Ireland medals, and a national league title. He became Ulster football's top scorer and was awarded two All-Stars during his career. But while he was enjoying incredible success on the pitch, Oisin's personal life was spiralling out of control. A gambling addiction saw him run up massive debts, fall out with friends and family, and have suicidal thoughts. In this episode of The Mario Rosenstock podcast, Oisin opens up about his love (and hate) for football, how he overcame a destructive gambling addiction, and he tells me the fascinating history of Crossmaglen and how the British Army (inadvertently) helped his team succeed. The KBRT logo can be seen on GAA jersey's from Crossmaglen to Kilcoo and even across the water in San Francisco. The little bird emblem is significant for Kevin Bell's parents Collie and Eithne whose charitable organisation, The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust [KBRT] is their son's legacy. Kevin was killed in a hit and run car accident in New York in 2013 and it took a network of family, friends and the community home and abroad to gather the funds needed to repatriate his body home to his loved ones in just three days. The extraordinary generosity of those who donated to the Bell family at such a horrific time of grief inadvertently led to Collie and Eithne establishing KBRT. The charity has brought home the bodies of over 1300 people from around the world since then. For this week's podcast, Collie explains how it all began and how the charity evolved over the years. He talks about his son Kevin and how KBRT is not only his legacy but also cathartic in some ways for his family. On a happier note, Collie and Eithne did have a little bit of luck a few years ago and Collie tells us all about that too…

Ken emailed: "Hey there Marc. I came across your podcast by accident. I became a member and am in the process of shifting through the treasure trove of music and information that is part of your podcast. I heard on the first podcast I opened that you are a musician. that became obvious when I went through the information and saw the CD that you have made available for sale. Now, do not get me wrong, I am going to ask a stupid question. How do you make your money to support the undertaking you have embarked upon since (2008??). Second, do you go on podcast sponsored trips to listen to this music; or do you rely on bands sending in demo's. I am not a musician at all. I just love music. Have taken a fancy to Celtic music as I like the heritage. Will plan on visiting the Emerald Isle some time before I pass. Can listen to Celtic Music just as much as Country music, New Wave, Classical, etc. All depending upon the mood. Thank you for your time and Take care of yourself"

Former Armagh senior footballer Aaron Kernan joins us this week on The Backdoor GAA Podcast.
He is known throughout the county and far beyond as the voice of Armagh GAA. His catch phrases are as unique and individual as his broadcasting style. We're all familiar with, 'Mary from Killeavy,' the magnetic pull of the hill,' and - of course - 'The Holy Mary Mother of God score.' When you hear, 'We're coming to you from the ecclesiastical capital,' over the radio or on Armagh TV, you know Damian McCullough is on the mic. He has taken advice from Rowan Hand, who told him to refrain from overuse of the word 'ball' while commentating on Gaelic games - which contributed greatly to his style. He's given the great Micheal O Muircheartaigh a hand with information at a game - and the legendary broadcaster never forgot. He blagged a half-time sausage bap from a woman in the stands with a frying pan at an Armagh game, and was battered over the back of the head by a Crossmaglen woman in the Buttercrane, for over-exaggerating the closeness of a game - Cross were in no danger of losing. He never forgets the people who make the tea and sandwiches, including Mrs McConville in Crossmaglen and Mona McEntee who fed hm a steak dinner during one match. For this episode of The I on the Ball, proudly sponsored by Blackhill Energy, Damian expands on all of these tales and a whole lot more.
Aaron Cunningham joins us talking about: - The culture within Crossmaglen Rangers - Playing club football for Longford New York - Experiencing racial abuse in a game - Being involved in the black lives matter protest in America and much more. For this week's The I on the Ball podcast, proudly sponsored by Blackhill Energy, we spoke to Armagh Road Bowling Association Chairman Chris Mallon, whose daughter Kelly – Armagh captain, Armagh Harps star and Madden Camogie captain – is the most decorated female Road Bowler in Ireland, with eight championship titles under her belt. We also caught up with Kelly a few days later and spoke with Crossmaglen manager Stephen Kernan who, despite a comprehensive championship victory over Mullaghbawn, lamented the treatment of O'Neill brothers – Oisin and Rian.

This episode contains an overview of the major County Club finals taking place over the course of the weekend, twenty in all! Eighteen are taking place on the Sunday with two on the Saturday and also on Saturday, a double header in Club Football with both semifinals airing back to back on RTE. I also focus on the Ulster Club Championship. Club weekends don't get much bigger than this one coming up. Sunday is the busiest day of the season on the county final front with eighteen on the schedule across all four provinces - many of them high-profile fixtures. Add in two more on Saturday. Back-to-back All-Ireland champions Corofin will be bidding for a remarkable seventh successive Galway SFC title at Tuam Stadium, where they face the local Stars. Clontribret are looking to steer Scotstown's 'drive for five' off course in Monaghan while Ballymacnab and Crossmaglen cross swords in the Armagh SFC final once again. Naomh Conaill will be keen to avoid their third successive Donegal SFC final defeat when they face holders Gaoth Dobhair in a repeat of last year's decider at MacCumhaill Park (live, TG4). In Kildare, there will be an eight all-Newbridge SFC final in nineteen years as fierce rivals Moorefield and Sarsfields prepare to do battle. Slaughtneil slayers Watty Grahams are set to contest their first-ever Derry SFC final, against a Magherafelt side who are appearing in their first in 36 years. The Waterford SFC final is between Ballinacourty and Rathgormack after the latter reached their first Conway Cup showpiece in 19 years. Miltown-Malbay (Clare), Tir Chonaill Gaels (London), Newtown Blues (Louth) and Tourlestrane (Sligo) are set to defend their respective championship crowns. Also on Sunday, the opening game of the provincial club SFC takes places at Corrigan Park, where Antrim winners Cargin face Fermanagh's five-in-a-row champions Derrygonnelly. On Saturday evening, all eyes will be on the Mayo SFC final as reigning champions Ballintubber and Ballaghaderreen go head-to-head for the Moclair Cup. Meanwhile, live coverage of the first two Kerry SFC quarter-finals (Killarney Legion v St Brendans; Dingle v East Kerry) will be available to watch on RTE2. Ulster club JFC quarter-finals Collegeland (Armagh) v Buncrana (Donegal), Athletic Grounds, 2pm Killinkere (Cavan) v Bright (Down), Kingspan Breffni, 2.30pm Blackhill (Monaghan) v Maguiresbridge (Fermanagh), Inniskeen, 2.30pm Ulster club SFC first round Cargin (Antrim) v Derrygonnelly (Fermanagh), Corrigan Park, 2.30pm --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ateachersstory/message
Yes, a weekend of mixed fortunes on the sporting front: United lose again, to Newcastle! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faced fresh calls to bring the curtain down on his Old Trafford tenure during Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. The Red Devils traveled to the north east desperate to get back to winning ways having failed to secure victory in 90 minutes since September 19. But, as much as they huffed and puffed at St James' Park, they failed to make a breakthrough and get themselves on the scoresheet. United's woes were compounded in the second half when Newcastle debutant Matty Longstaff finished off a flowing move to put Newcastle 1-0 up. The goal, which proved to be the winner, opened the door for a wave of criticism to be directed towards Solskjaer, with fans venting their fury towards the Norwegian on social media. "Solskjaer is clearly out of his depth at this level, but not a single pundit or former teammate will say it though," said one fan on Twitter. "It’ll all be the players and boards fault.” Semi-final time in GAA Club football and I take in Armagh and Derry semi-finals. In Armagh a double header semi-final spectactular ended up as a rather damp affair particularly in the 2nd game as the first between Ballymacnab & Granemore proved enthralling despite atrocious conditions with an injury time equaliser from Granemore ensuring the 'Nab had to work really hard in extra time to ensure a repeat of the 2018 final against Crossmaglen who eased past Maghery in conditions that were more akin to a swimming gala than anything that could have been conducive to good football. Final scores for both games: Ballymacnab Round Towers 0-16 v 0-13 Granemore AET Crossmaglen Rangers 2-9 (15) v 0-8 Maghery Sean MacDiarmada In Derry, I travelled to Owenbeg, Dungiven on Sunday where I was delighted to witness Glen, Maghera deservedly deny Slaughtneil a return to the Derry Senior club decider in a game of goals and goal chances, holding on for a famous victory, that saw the Watty Graham's appear in their 1st Senior football final, in a finish that was more nerve-wracking than it needed to be.Glen would have been happy to win an awful game – they were delighted to edge this enthralling encounter by a score of Watty Graham's, Glen 3-7 (16) Robert Emmet's, Slaughtneil 1-11 (14). They will now face another local neighbour as Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa who have qualified for their first senior county final in 36 years by beating Banagher on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-9 in the other semi which was played on Saturday in equally atrociuos conditions the the Armagh double header. The 19th typhoon of the season which has been named Typhoon Hagibis has formed just south of Japan and forecasters say it is rapidly making its way towards the mainland, could quite literally blow Ireland's QFinal qualification away. Ireland are due to play Samoa on Saturday in Fukuoka, which is in southern Japan. World Rugby have already confirmed that if any World Cup games are cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, the result will go down as a 0-0 draw. If the worst case scenario was to unfold, it could leave Ireland on the brink of elimination, if Scotland were to win their remaining two games against Russia on Wednesday and Japan on Sunday. My main topics for this episode are: The historic win for Ireland at the Aviva against the All Blacks, I also discuss my lack of prowess as a sports pundit over the past weekend and I look at the way forward for the podcast. The Ulster club football double header at Healy Park in Omagh, where Scotstown took on Coleraine at 1.30 and Gaoth Dobhair played Crossmaglen at 3.30 on Sunday. Rory Beggan again starred for Scotstown with 3 points the final one of which was the match winning score and I also review Gaoith Dobhair's win over Crossmaglen where they not only exposed some defensive frailties in the Armagh side but dominated the game with their mix of youth and experience. I'm also experimenting with my editing process and how I promote the podcast on other platforms. My Twitter feed is the best place to continue the discussion or indeed contact me about topics you would like me include in an episode: https://twitter.com/GPK__ I hope everyone enjoys the podcast and don't forget to LIKE & SHARE, thanks. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ateachersstory/message
My main topics for this episode are: The Ulster club football double header at Healy Park in Omagh, where Scotstown take on Coleraine at 1.30 and Gaoth Dobhair play Crossmaglen at 3.30 on Sunday. Rory McIlroy's announcement about scheduling only two European Tour events for 2019 and how the Irish Open could be one of the events that is not on his calendar, I also discuss his current situation around the possibility of changing his caddy. I preview the upcoming meeting of the All Blacks and Ireland at the Aviva in Dublin on Saturday night and the fact that this is a clash between the current top 2 teams in the world rugby rankings. Finally, I give my views on how prepared meals for Inter-County players is another way in which the gap is continually widening between the club and county player. Wooly and Conan take a look back at a brilliant day of county final action and Aaron Kernan joins on the line after Crossmaglen ended a 'drought' of two years without a county title.

John McCarthy visits Northern Ireland where he stays in two contrasting hotels and hears about different approaches to tourism after the troubles. In Belfast he talks to the owner, the concierge and a famous guest of the much bombed Europa Hotel, takes a taxi tour of the opposing sections of the city and looks forward to developments in the arts attracting visitors. In South Armagh, John visits the first new hotel for 100 years in Crossmaglen, a notorious village during the conflict, hears a traditional music session or ceoltas and gets a panoramic view from a local beauty spot. Producer: Harry Parker.
