Another editorial powerhouse, Bob Schreck has been all over the comics industry for the better part of five decades! He started out organizing and running conventions for Creation Entertainment in the mid 70s, then worked in marketing for Marvel before taking the reins at Comico (with then-wife and past guest Diana Schutz as EIC). From there, it was on to Dark Horse, where Bob expanded from his marketing role into editorial, overseeing such titles as Frank Miller's Sin City, Art Adam's Monkeyman and O'Brien, and the influential anthology Dark Horse Presents. Soon after his Dark Horse stint, he co-founded Oni Press, where among other projects, brought filmmaker Kevin Smith into the comics world. Then it was on to DC, where Bob oversaw huge Batman storylines like Hush, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and Batman: Year 100, as well as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, All-Star Superman, and Sweet Tooth (Vertigo). And he still wasn't done, working for IDW and Legendary Comics after that. But jeez, we've got to end this intro! You can follow Bob on Facebook._________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. It's the end of an era at Indefensible Ink, and to mark the occasion, Ryan and Justin have reconvened one last time to tackle a topic they've had their eye on since the podcast began nearly three years ago: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Frank Miller's controversial turn-of-the-century followup to his legendary Batman epic The Dark Knight Returns. Is DKSA's crass social commentary and political nihilism sincere or satirical? Does it matter? Your hosts wrestle with a very challenging comic to try to determine what, if anything, we are supposed to take from it. And Indefensible Ink will, quite literally, never be the same again! An important announcement about the future of the podcast leads this episode. Discussed: The Dark Knight Strikes Again #1-3 (2001-02)
Frank Miller's story Dark Knight Returns has long been considered a masterwork in contemporary superhero comics, and has put a stamp on the character of Batman that is still felt to this day. Almost twenty years later, Miller returned to the same well with Dark Knight Strikes Again. DKSA is a wildly different take on the character and garnered a wide range of opinions, dividing readers instantly. Is DKSA a late career misfire for Miller, or something wholly dissonant from DKR that must be reckoned with on it's own terms? Music is by Free Rap Beats. Tom Scioli, the cartoonist who lives and bleeds creativity, returns to Wits’ End to talk all things comics with Shah. Tom hasn’t had a break in two+ years. During that time, he’s been conjuring passionate project after project. Some of his recent projects include: Transformers vs. GI Joe, Go-Bots, Fantastic Four: Grand Design and his upcoming Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics. The chat starts off as Shah and Tom re-evaluate Frank Miller’s controversial Dark Knight Strikes Again (the sequel to the highly respected The Dark Knight Returns). DKSA does have merits, despite its controversy. It’s Frank Miller embracing the Silver Age in his Dark Knight universe! In a nonsensical time, a nonsensical politically charged comic like DKSA puts a lot in perspective. Tom is arguably the biggest Kirby fan on the planet and there’s no one better suited to tell The King’s story than him. Shah and Tom talk about the Kirby book, Kirby’s Captain Victory, Kirby inkers and how Kirby’s story has a major influence on comics. Anyway! Shah and Tom talk Frank Miller comics, DC in the Silver Age, Jack Kirby inker’s (especially Vince Colletta), Tom’s Kirby book and other projects, Jack Kirby in movies, SUPERPOWERS, the fate of comic shops and a lot more. BURN OINTMENT is an appendix series offering recommendations for further reading and general chatter inspired by the main episodes of the OH GOD IT BURNS!!! series. If you're looking for a full length discussion of Dark Knight Strikes Again, go back and take a listen to our previous episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ohgoditburns/message
Hello again my crispy cousins, and welcome back to another episode of OH GOD IT BURNS!!! Your Buyer’s Guide to Bad Comics. Without a doubt Frank Miller wrote two of the most influential comics of all time when he dropped Batman Year One and Dark Knight Returns barely within a year of one another. It was an amazing time, made even more amazing by the fact that in those same years we saw the release of Alan Moore’s Watchmen, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, JM DeMatteis’ Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt, and oh – what’s this? – oh, yeah, that’s just some other Frank Miller comic called Daredevil Born Again. No biggie. All of these comics were collectively responsible for legitimizing the medium comics as a genuine literary artform, and I don’t know if you were keeping count, but out of the six stories I mentioned above, our boy Frankie accounted for 50% of them. So when I say that 1986 showcased Frank Miller in his prime, understand that this man was almost single-handedly responsible for changing the industry for the better – and for the worse. 2001’s Dark Knight Strikes Again definitely falls into the worse category, and it does so in what has become one of most psychologically tortured, erratic, and drug fueled journeys into misery ever published. And we owe it all to Osama Bin Laden. If Bane broke the Bat, it was 9/11 that broke the Frank, and for anybody who has dared to endure this book to the last page, it is evident that this series is a masterwork in creative self-destruction, and one that is an absolutely essential addition to your coveted Longbox of Cursed and Forbidden Comics, not only for how it so thoroughly disgraces its predecessor on the surface, but also for how it stands as heart-wrenching metaphor for how the great indominable American spirit was emotionally shattered in the face of such real-world existential evil. Bruno and I cover all the bases and leave no stone unturned as we agonize over Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Strikes Again on this week’s episode of OH GOD IT BURNS!!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ohgoditburns/message
Imagine, dear listener, that it's June 1986 and you've just finished Frank Miller's classic The Dark Knight Returns. Amazed, you never imagined there could be a sequel to this masterpiece. Now imagine it's December 2001 and you finally have a sequel in your hands. It's a nonsensical, emotional reaction to the oncoming War on Terror. Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up! The Longbox is tackling The Dark Knight Strikes Again!
It’s been a few years since an aged Bruce Wayne pulled his cape and cowl out of retirement and faked his death to raise a new legion of vigilantes beneath the streets of Gotham. Now he’s back in Frank Miller’s much anticipated and much maligned sequel: The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Joe is joined by first time guest Andrew Davis from the Pop Anime Comics Podcast to discuss online podcast guest finding groups, taking Batman out of his canon, the foresight of the book, meeting people’s expectations, other bad Batman stories, how to blackmail Superman, how to kick Superman’s ass, wartime Batman, reading the book now vs. immediately after 9/11, great character reveals, cynicism, being specific with criticism, and Batman’s sense of humor. In episode three the host, Derk Harron, pitches a superhero story, "The Helmet" to his guest Russ Kazmierczak. Derk would compare this story to the movie, "The Fly" directed by David Cronenberg and the graphic novel, "The Dark Knight Strikes Again."
The Ill Mac, Mister Joe Fixit and Diabolu Frank return after nearly five months with black & whitesploitation! Fantagraphics Books represent at 0:38 with Johnny Ryan’s Prison Pit, an adults-only sci-fi gorehound wrestling original graphic novel series, currently at five volumes with an animated adaptation of the first. Then at 22:17, Frank offers a second installment of our “Swords of Cerebus” ongoing feature, a look at the seminal Canadian barbarian aardvark self-published series that published 300 regular issues between 1977-2004, taken six at a time. Discussing the encroaching craziness of once-revered creator Dave Sim with Mac leads us to a tangent at 28:54 tracing the similar trajectory of Frank Miller from Sin City to Dark Knight Strikes Again, All-Star Batman, Holy Terror and the upcoming The Master Race. 34:29 brings a theme song to our mail segment, which is so heavy with shop talk between Joe & Frank that it takes up most of the back half of the hour.

DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE #2 COLLECTOR’S EDITION Written by FRANK MILLER and BRIAN AZZARELLO Art by ANDY KUBERT and KLAUS JANSON Cover by JIM LEE On sale JANUARY 6 • 40 pg, FC, 7.0625” x 10.875”, $12.99 US • RATED T+ This oversized paper-over-boards COLLECTOR’S EDITION features both stories from DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE #2 at the same size! Obviously DC still isn't revealing much about the plot of The Dark Knight III, but the issue #2 solicit does confirm that Carrie Kelly will play a major role in the story. Carrie has apparently evolved from being Robin in The Dark Knight Returns to Catgirl in The Dark Knight Strikes Again to assuming the mantle of Batman proper in this sequel. This lends credence to early rumors that The Dark Knight III will parallel the original and revolve around Carrie seeking her superhero successor. We'll find out more about this futuristic Batman epic when the first issue hits stories in November.

Spoiler Alert! This podcast discusses many key elements of The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Batman was a campy comic character best known for his 1960s TV series and the Batdance until 1986 when Frank Miller reinvented the character in The Dark Knight Returns, a 4-issue limited comic series telling the tale of an older, retired Batman in an alternate version of the DC universe. Now, inspired by Now Playing Podcast's Batman movie retrospective series, the dynamic duo of Arnie and Jakob review this seminal comic series, Arnie having never read the series before this review, and Jakob a long time fan of the series. And they also take a brief look at Frank Miller's sequel comic series, The Dark Knight Strikes Back.
And here it is, the inaugural episode of “You’re All Wrong,” my first venture into podcasting. This is just Episode 0, announcing my intention to make a lot of people angry. I will be doing future episodes but first I need guests. And this is a call for guests. I got the idea for this podcast after my little guest stint on Television Zombies, where I was asked to come on the show and defend Alcatraz. I did my job but, in doing so, realized that I like a lot of things that a lot of people seem to dislike and dislike a lot of things that a lot of people seem to like. “You’re All Wrong” will be a short podcast where I debate the merits of something with someone who believes I’m crazy and that the masses are 100% correct. So what are possible candidates for the somethings? If the show keeps going I’ll drop new lists every so often, but here’s the first list: Things I like that a lot of people seem to dislike: Speed Racer the movie, Terra Nova, TGI Fridays, Red Lobster, Event Horizon, Lionel Richie, New Kids on the Block, 808s and Heartbreaks, A Night at the Roxbury, Drake, Radio Shack, Armond White, and American Horror Story. Things that I dislike that a lot of people seem to like: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, piracy, all British Television shows except for Monty Python, True Blood, Drive, X-Men: First Class, 2-Pac, The Doors, Christopher Hitchens, Twilight, 100 Bullets, Louie, Sage Francis, Inception, Bridesmaids, Funny People, Lady Gaga, the Yankees, and Mountain Dew. Also! If there’s something you love (or hate) that a lot of people hate (or love), let me know and maybe we can do a show on that. I’m speaking specifically to my friend Chris, who loves Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Again despite the fact that he is completely wrong. I really hope he accepts this public throwing-down of the gauntlet. It is time he commits his opinion to the permanent record. If anything I just mentioned just made your blood boil then you can be my guest on a show! And who can be a guest? Anyone!…provided you meet the following criteria: 1) You have an argument for or against the topic being discussed. Your reason for liking or disliking something can’t just be, “Because,” 2) You have Skype, 3) You can spare 10-20 minutes to talk about the subject, 4) You can talk, 5) And bonus points for being a debate champion, owning a decent microphone, or being involved in some way with the thing being discussed! I’ve been reaching out to some folks on my own already but if you want in on this, send an email to jrodinator@gmail.com and let me know! Seriously – I don’t even have to know who you are…although there may be a little pre-screening. And, of course, you can subscribe to the feed via iTunes or whatever you want right here. And, that’s it for now! More in the weeks to come…
Picking up where we left the Frank Miller discussion last week, we cap off the second half ouf this episode with a jump into the murky waters of The DarK Knight Strikes Again and another extended and heated discussion on art, perception, expectation, and crazy creators with little more than contempt for both their medium and audience. Or is it? You decide. Plus, we fill the first hour full to the brim with banter on Fantomex, the Dark Horse Archive Editions, TFAW, omnibus editions (incorporating Evan Dorkin's Milk and Cheese, Wolfman and Perez's Teen Titans, Simonson's Thor, Morrison and company's New X-Men, Acts of Vengeance, Secret Wars II, Avengers: The Crossing, Too Much Coffee Man, and more!), 100 Bullets, Azzarello and Risso's Spaceman, Jack Kirby's stint on Our Fighting Forces and The Losers, Kirby inkers, Defenders #1 by the Dodsons and Fraction, Hellboy: House of the Living Dead from Mignola and Corben out of Dark Horse, Animan Man and Swamp Thing, the New52, Image's Haunt #19 by Casey and Fox, Action Lab. In celebration of the end of summer, here's a super-sized Episode 54 of Wait, What?, with Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester talking Black Panther: The Man Without Fear Fear Itself, the Internet backlash against Grant Morrison, whether creators are the new superheroes, Justice League Dark, Frank Miller's Dark Knight Strikes Again and his upcoming Holy Terror, West Coast Avengers, The Ultimates, and, believe me, much, much more. It's the kind of thing we'd normally split in two, so pace yourself with this one hour and fifty minute late summer feast.
