A REMARKABLE BOOKSELLER. James Daunt is the founder of the Daunt Books chain in the UK, and has been managing director of Waterstones, the bookshop chain of more than 300 stores, since 2011. In 2019 he also became CEO of Barnes & Noble, the American bookstore chain of some 650 stores. An Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Daunt was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to publishing. “The real joy of a bookstore is that it does curate and it does the job of ensuring that readers and customers are browsing the best that's available.“ “The book is ultimately the most satisfying way in which to educate oneself and to illuminate around the issue of interest“ “There are booksellers up and down, particularly in Europe, who are espousing the same principles, which is let the booksellers in each shop run their own bookstores“
The resurrection of Barnes & Noble is one of the most remarkable turnaround stories of the modern business era. Chief revival architect and CEO James Daunt joins Anne and Frances to discuss the unconventional leadership strategies that helped him navigate through the pandemic and keep bookstores alive in the age of Amazon and e-books. They explore James's non-hierarchical approach to team building, dive into the challenges he faced on his mission to revitalize the company, and discover the principle at the heart of his strategy: being nice. Avsnitt 272.
Amazon revolutionized the retail market with its online shopping and shipping, a revolution that caused companies to change drastically or go bankrupt. Even Walmart had to reboot itself to battle the e-commerce giant. Another industry that Amazon took a huge swing at, tied to its original founding purpose, was books, and then with its Kindle and e-books in 2007. Already on its heels, COVID-19 took a swing at retail when people weren't allowed to visit stores to support the already struggling book industry. Today's guest has taken those swings to the chin and is now turning things around and succeeding. Barnes & Noble CEO, James Daunt, joins this episode of The Reboot Chronicles to discuss how he is rebooting the largest retail bookseller in the United States. Barnes and Noble is the perfect reboot story, which has seen the good, the bad, and the atrocious times as it lived through in its storied journey. With declining store numbers for almost 15 years and then lock-downs, the company is back on a growth track, with 600 stores, and 18,000 employees that deliver around $3.5 billion in annual revenue. Follow along as we unpack this active, back to basics, turnaround, and what Barnes & Noble has in store for us next.
James Daunt grew up in England the child of a diplomat—moving countries, tasting cultures, living a life with books and history at its core. He lived in Turkey and Cyprus before coming back to England for boarding school. After studying history at Cambridge, he didn't know what he wanted to do, so the Career Services department pointed him towards investment banking across the sea in New York City. He actually liked the job but his girlfriend thought it was incredibly boring and encouraged him to quit. He thought, "How do I combine my love of reading and my love of travel into doing something wholly different?" The first Daunt Books independent bookstore opened on Marylebone High Street in London soon after. Unlike nearly every book store in the world he organized his books … by country. Not genre! But by place. Bookselling isn't an easy business! Lots of stores were going belly-up and profits were meager but over time he found a special knack for it. He went to bookselling school, paid fairly, and took mentorship and development seriously. When big bookstore chains started falling in the wake of Amazon, and Waterstones was essentially the only national chain left in the UK, a wealthy entrepreneur bought it and asked James to lead it. He turned the concept of a chain bookstore on its head, suggesting that stores would do better if the head office minimized itself and helped the booksellers operate like their own independent bookstores. Gone were planograms! Head office mandates! He tore up lucrative publisher deals spelling out which books to force onto the front tables to guarantee bestseller lists! He ripped up the rulebook completely. And what happened? Sales shot up. The chain survived ... then thrived. When the new owners of Waterstones bought Barnes & Noble—the largest bookstore chain in the world—they asked James to lead it, too. Today, James Daunt is the biggest bookseller on the planet overseeing nearly 1000 bookshops including his now-9 store Daunt Books indie chain, over 300 Waterstones, and over 600 Barnes & Nobles (including 65 new ones this year!!). I was very excited when James said "yes" to coming on 3 Books. We go deep on learning from history, the role of bookstores in society, his most formative books, the best place to find a date, the key to customer service, leading from behind, and much, much more.... Let's flip the page to Chapter 141 now...
James Daunt has turned around Waterstones in the UK and Barnes & Noble in the US. That gives him a unique insight into what it takes to run successful shops on both sides of the Atlantic at a time when many high street businesses are failing. In this podcast episode, we take a detailed look at how Daunt runs his book shops and the strategy that is required to succeed...If you enjoyed this episode, then you can find out more about the story behind Daunt Books, Waterstones and Barnes & Noble in our previous interview with Daunt, which looks at the history of the businesses. Matt Grossmann and Arnold Weinfeld discuss Michigan and national politics, policy, and the economy on the monthly State of the State podcast from MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR). The podcast is a monthly round up of policy and research for Michigan. Tony Daunt is executive director of FAIR Maps Michigan. He joins the conversation to discuss the redistricting process in Michigan, the current remapping process, and what brought us to this point. Conversation Highlights: (0:32) – What's the latest in national politics and the presidential race? (5:58) – An assessment of proposals in Governor Whitmer's State of the State address and the state of politics and policy in Michigan. “This last year was one of the most productive and ideological movements of public policy that we've seen across any state for, like, 50 years. This was an extraordinary move leftward that they accomplished in the first year, and they're set up to try to do a lot more.” (9:27) – Economic development, R & D tax credit, and population growth – “The business location packages really don't impact business decisions. People make business location decisions and then rack up the tax credits.” (14:27) – Daunt joins the conversation to talk about the remapping process. (19:50) – What would you rather have seen from the beginning of the redistricting process? (23:12) – How is the redraw going so far? (25:36) – What is the role of FAIR Maps Michigan? And what are some of your suggestions moving forward? Where is this headed? (31:22) – “The commission has been rather defiant about the lawsuit, and I would encourage everyone to see this as an opportunity to correct, by all accounts, the biggest defect in the process. The public remains supportive of the changes, especially the changes to the partisan composition of the relationship between districts and statewide votes. This was the primary citizen concern expressed quite loudly and clearly. But that was ignored by the commission. So rather than see it as a burden imposed by the courts, I would encourage them to see it as a second chance to correct the biggest defect in the process.”
This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Duane and Carrie Daunt to discuss what living out our identity of father or mother can look like as a biological parent. Duane and Carrie share the challenges and joys of parenting a large family and the role sacrifice plays in creating a strong and loving home. They also talk about how their own woundedness has impacted their parenting journey, the role of community, and what to do when spouses disagree. Key Points: Duane's sacrifice and willingness to put the needs of his family above his own is an essential aspect of creating a loving home. Community and mentorship play a crucial role in raising children and passing on the faith. Parenting a large family comes with unique challenges but also brings great joy and fulfillment. Our own woundedness and past experiences can impact our parenting journeys. It is important to seek healing and restoration in those areas. We are human and will make mistakes. Seeking to reconcile with your children afterwards is important for healing and repair. The Pillars of Duane and Carrie's Parenting Style: Be conscious of the parenting you received growing up and how that has affected you The husband sacrificing creates the foundation of a loving home Both spouses should have vision and alignment Support from the community is necessary The Catholic faith is the centerpiece of life Do what it takes to be involved in your children's lives You may never see the fruit of your parenting efforts, but that doesn't matter Be open to feedback Be Holy Spirit led The messages your kids are hearing explicitly and implicitly matter and be attentive to them Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill your inadequacies as a parent Always attempt to repair Root your kids in the truth Resources: Institute for Priestly Formation Duane and Carrie's books: Beloved Daughter by Carrie Daunt Undone by Carrie Daunt Man Your Post by Duane and Carrie Daunt JPII Healing Center Retreats (specifically the Unveiled couples retreat and the Undone women's retreat) Connect with Restore the Glory: Instagram: @restoretheglorypodcast Twitter: @RestoreGloryPod Facebook: Restore the Glory Podcast Never miss out on an episode by hitting the subscribe button right now! “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit, apart from me you can do nothing" John 15:5This week speaker, author, and my dear friend, Carrie Daunt, and I dive into the first section in Father Jacque Philippe's book "In the School of the Holy Spirit" for our summer book series. It was a treasure for my own heart to reflect upon the unique workings of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives. All too often we believe the lie that the pathway to holiness is to plan it all out, muscle up the effort, and white knuckle our way towards virtue and sainthood. However, Father Jacque Philippe makes it abundantly clear that it is in fact much simpler than that. He discusses that holiness is produced by the openness and obedience to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Check out our future episodes on this summer book series! "Fix these words of mine into your mind and being" Deuteronomy 11:18.This week, the lovely Carrie Daunt joins me to discuss her latest book, "Beloved Daughter." It was a treat for my heart to chat with my dear friend Carrie, as we discuss the importance of helping our daughters know who they are in God. In a world that speaks so many lies into our daughters' hearts, we mommas must speak the truth of God's blessings and affirmations over them. In doing this, we can help them rest in their truest identity as a beloved daughter of God's. Carrie's children's book beautifully does just that! Check out all things Carrie Daunt and her latest book here:Beloved Daughter:Beloved Daughter – John Paul II Healing Center (jpiihealingcenter.org)John Paul II Healing Center:John Paul II Healing Center – Transformation in the Heart of the Church (jpiihealingcenter.org)Every little girl longs to know the delight of the Father and the truth of her God-given goodness. In this installment of our Centennial Series on companies that are over 100 years old, we are talking to Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt. The last few decades have thrown some hurdles in Barnes & Noble's way, however. Far from being the monster that inspired the plot of the movie You've Got Mail, it's had to face down a new Goliath called Amazon and the general decline of big-box retail stores. After years of closures and declining revenues, Barnes & Noble was bought out by activist investors in 2019, who installed Daunt as CEO, and he's managed to turn things around by doing two main things. First, he has decentralized operations of the stores, letting each store act like a local bookshop and giving his booksellers more control over what titles they sell and display. He immediately ended a system that allowed publishers to pay for special placement in bookstores, which he said corrupted the entire system in service of short-term profits. Second, he's using Barnes & Noble's scale to build a purchasing and distribution pipeline that serves as the rest of the book industry's competitor to Amazon. We get into all of it — the culture wars, J.K. Rowling, book ban bills in states across the country, and how Barnes & Noble went from being the bully on the block to competing with Amazon.
