In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite TV series: the British television mockumentary sitcom "The Office" created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series follows the day-to-day office employees in the Slough branch of the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company. The series stars Ricky Gervais as David Brent, the general manager of the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg - a mostly ineffective boss, who is occasionally clueless to the effect of his own political incorrectness, his rudeness, his selfishness, his awkwardness, and his narcissism; but who is secretly insecure about himself, which causes him to sometimes make jokes at the expense of other people. Martin Freeman stars as Tim Canterbury, a sales representative at the Slough branch of the Wernham Hogg paper company - who is both witty and considerate, and who enjoys nothing more than playing practical jokes at the expense of fellow salesman and "team leader" Gareth Keenan (played by Mackenzie Crook) with the office's receptionist Dawn Tinsley (played by Lucy Davis), who Tim has a crush on but who is engaged to marry her fiancé, Lee (played by Joel Beckett). Sadly the rebirth of David Brent ended with a shockingly awful film that made the original TV Series look like a Hollywood blockbuster. 6/10 here is WAY too high. There are however quite a few 10/10 comedic scenes as funny as any to feature Brent.

One of the greatest comedic characters to come out of the UK in recent years is undoubtably David Brent. Created and performed by Ricky Gervas, Brent is a pitiful character; constantly hiding from his self-loathing by unsuccessfully trying to play the part of a successful, funny, attractive and popular Renaissance Man. In the figure of Brent, Gervas has been able to create a character who manifestly wrestles with repression, neurotic symptoms, and eruptions of the unconscious. However, while the character is largely comic, there is a tragic element to him that is fleshed out at the end of The Office and at the conclusion of the movie David Brent: Life on the Road. In this Pyro-seminar, I’ll be using Brent as an example of the universal struggle that is human existence. Not only that, but I’ll be showing how Brent can show us how to bear the weight of that struggle and find a depth of meaning. With the help of Brent, I'll attempt to delineate the type of freedom that a pyrotheological community offers.

It's another cinema extravaganza this week, kicking off with a couple of horror movies, the first of which - The Conjuring 2 - we may have mentioned before. Emily and Sarah review David Brent: Life on the Road the latest British mockumentary comedy film written, directed, and produced by Ricky Gervais and released by Entertainment One and BBC films. The film stars Gervais as David Brent, the character he played in the popular BBC television comedy series The Office. The film follows the story of Brent as his documentary film crew as he travels up and down the country living his dream of being a rock star.

This week we went to see David Brent: Life on the Road; so we inevitably talked about the marriage of comedy and schmaltz. We also made a start on new Baz Luhrmann-Netflix pairing about the roots of hip-hop in The Bronx, The Get Down; touched on the most recent episode of Mr Robot; discussed the rumoured sequel to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and we talked about the many many many bowls of oatmeal that is No Man's Sky.
