What does the recreational boating industry look like right now from the perspective of someone who deals with dozens of dealers on a daily basis? That's what we wanted to know, so we asked Myril Shaw, COO of Dealer Profit Services, a full-service F&I and compliance services company, to join host David Gee for this Boating Industry Insider podcast episode. There is a growing consensus among auto industry executives and analysts that a tipping point is fast approaching for the mass adoption of electric vehicles because of falling battery costs, improving battery technology, pressure from regulators and generous government subsidies. It's National Safe Boating Week (and month), just before the start of peak boating season, but actually it's appropriate to talk about safe boating any time. Now, more than ever, those qualities of boating are the reason it is positioned to be the perfect social distancing activity in our Covid-19 world. We, like many, have been homebound for a month plus. All social engagements and activities for our kids have been cancelled. Cabin fever is real. And now, with warm weather approaching, along comes boating! We know that boating is going to look different – for example we won’t be inviting anyone outside our immediate family on board any time soon – but it remains the number one thing we are looking forward to doing over the next several months. And, we are happy that marinas have been considered essential so that we can work to provide the same relief to others! In this context, I was able to speak with David Gee, Editor-in-Chief of Boating Industry Magazine, to discuss his life on the water and the current state of the boating industry. David has tremendous enthusiasm for boating and particularly watersports, and his optimism about the future of boating as a family pastime and as an industry where we make our living is highly encouraging! David Gee has over 20 years as a technology marketer - early in his career, David worked on Java and IBM and Sun, productized Yahoo! technology for the enterprise and led the marketing teams for HP's $3bn software and $20bn services businesses.  in 2011 David left big tech to join Infoblox as CMO through their IPO and 4x the revenue, and CMO of Zuora in their run up to IPO and has been CMO at Imperva since January 2018 during which time we took the company private in a $2.1bn acquisition by Thoma Bravo. Away from the office David’s a technology tinkerer, gadget nut, arm chair Arsenal fan and proud Anglophile. David and I talk about the IT Security skills gap, the law of unintended consequences and how to get your message to be differentiated and stand out.  Focus on the customer problem seems basic, but as David says, “It’s shocking that we don’t articulate the problem we solve in the eyes of the customer.”    In the first half of our chat, David says you better tie your value to one of three core issues facing customers.  Listen to learn what those are. In the second half our our discussion, we talk about how to transition from SMB to Enterprise go to market motions and visa versa.  As a guy who has done this multiple times, David has a lot to share here too.
