I often hear this question: “Can an authentic Christian vote for the Democratic party?” Well, I think that's the wrong question. Politics come and go. Issues and positions change. Culture shifts. I don't think you can make a blanket decision about voting for or against a political party in every instance, in every situation for all time all the way down the ballet. But I do think a legitimate question in this political season is, “Can an authentic Christian honor the word of God by voting for this particular pair of Democratic politicians who have been presented to us as candidates for the White House?” Let's talk about that. We have a very special episode today with David L. Bahsen about work and the meaning of life. His book, Full-Time, is a challeging and important contribution for resetting our worldviews to fully embrace our role as workers and Christians. I wrote a short introduction on the Cross & Gavel Substack (here) incorporating David's work with Matthew Kaemingk's Work and Worship (listen to our chat with him here) and John Witte, Jr.'s Table Talk.
Why do so many people in our culture today dread work? Many times we think of work as a burden we have to do but really don't want to. Which breeds depression, stress, anxiety and unfulfillment in our lives. This perception of work robs us of true meaning in life, and leaves us very little time to actually enjoy life. But is work really supposed to be a curse? David Bahnsen doesn't think so. David believes that work is actually a gift and a huge part of our meaning in life. David wrote the book "Full-Time Work And The Meaning Of Life." In this book, David discusses how work is actually meant to enrich our lives and he exposes lies we've believed in many areas where work is concerned. Including how valuable one job is viewed compared to another, and even how the church has wrongly viewed "ministry" work compared to "marketplace" work.David argues that work isn't supposed to be something dirty. But it's actually supposed to be one of the most important things in life that gives us the deepest purpose and meaning. And we don't have to wait until the last part of our lives to make an impact. Doing work well now, as Christians, can be one of the greatest ministries to the world in this day. Listen as Mike and David talk about Full-Time Work And The Meaning Of Life.David L. David Bahnsen returns to the podcast to discuss his latest book: Full-Time: Work and the Meaning of Life. David holds a high view of work and, in an era where self-help gurus are teaching us how to work less to achieve a work/life balance, David wants to shift the paradigm to work/rest and celebrate the productive nature of our being. Also discussed in this episode are what the church gets wrong about work, how each generation brings different challenges and advantages to work culture, universal basic income (UBI), whether the Marxist are right and work under a capitalist system is exploitation, and what the future of retirement might mean for working Americans. Our culture has been sending a heavy message: “Find a healthy work/life balance!” You could say there’s been an emphasis on every area of life that is not work. Has the pendulum swung so far that we are devaluing the role of work in our lives? If so, how is that impacting our approach to work? What does the Bible have to say about work? David L. Bahnsen, founder and chief investment officer of the Bahnsen Group and author of his new book, Full-Time: Work and the Meaning of Life says “It’s time to get back to the Garden of Eden and understand what God created us to do.” Perry shares, “On a run in East Nashville last week and I heard a rooster crow. It made me think of Peter’s denials of Jesus and of my own.” In Acts we see the early church was of one heart and mind and shared generously with one another. You might think the Church is failing in this today. Shawna reminds us that if the Church is failing, then we are failing, because we are the Church! Last, Perry shares about his brother who’s been suffering for 40 years and isn’t getting better. It can be really discouraging but he shares how he’s able to remain hopeful even though things are not as they should be.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What is the great economic challenge of our times? Is it inflation? Rising inequality? Artificially low interest rates? Economist David Bahnsen joins Josh to discuss why excessive government debt and our slow-growth or no-growth economy risks the Japanification of the United States. While some warn of a financial apocalypse, David argues that a more realistic threat is continued lack of productive output and increasing discontents if we don't reverse course. Also discussed are how supply side economists can respond to the Left's critiques of the free market in the wake of the Great Recession and how Edmund Burke best represents American conservatism. David L. Bahnsen is the founder, Managing Partner, and Chief Investment Officer of The Bahnsen Group, a national private wealth management firm that manages over $3.5 billion in client assets. He brought The Bahnsen Group independent in April 2015 after eight years as a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley and seven years as a Vice President at UBS Financial Services. David serves on the Board of Directors for the National Review Institute and is a founding Trustee for Pacifica Christian High School of Orange County. He is also the author of several best-selling books, including the recently published There's No Free Lunch: 250 Economic Truths. David joins me on the show to discuss why he feels that there is a societal bias toward viewing work as a necessary evil that the Christian church has largely adopted and why he finds that as an unacceptable point of view. He shares his thoughts on the importance of having meaningful work in one's life, how he has created a business that serves a specific niche with excellence, and why that gives him purpose. We also talk about David's philosophy of giving wholeheartedly to causes that you're passionate about, and he dives into why helping to found the Pacifica Christian High School has brought him such joy. “Not only does everyone we know who's happy have a purpose — everyone we know who doesn't have purpose is unhappy.” - David Bahnsen “All you can do is be yourself and try to translate that into the experience you deliver to clients.” - David Bahnsen “There is a big part of me that is concerned about an acceptance of mediocrity that is taking place in the culture and taking place in the church. I truly believe that piety is not a substitute for technique.” - David Bahnsen This Week on The Wow Factor: What David sees as the anthropological case for work in our lives How David has achieved the career, he has without a college degree David's experience of working in large Wall Street firms and how that experience set a foundation for him to go out on his own Why he left solo practice to found the Banhsen group and become one of the top financial leaders in the nation How he handled the period of the financial crisis and how it impacted him personally and professionally The intellectual curiosity that led to him writing his first book Crisis of Responsibility Why economic life is rooted in a foundation of biblical worldview and understanding What Kuyperian theory is, and how it impacts David's philosophy of leadership Pacifica Christian High School and why it's David's biggest extracurricular passion Why David believes in giving and heart generosity but strongly dislikes the phrase ‘giving back' David Bahnsen's Words of Wisdom: Piety is no substitute for technique. There are so many people who feel that as long as their intentions are good, it doesn't matter if they perform well or have commitment to their goals. The acceptance of mediocrity that is taking hold in society is worrisome because piety is not a substitute for technique. It is vital to do everything you do with excellence.
