Melissa Davey took the adage about it's never too late to try something new quite seriously. This wasn't about jumping out of an airplane kind of stuff. In her sixties, she retired from a lengthy corporate career to pursue her second act and dream of becoming a filmmaker. I always tell teens I coach or meet who are stressed about picking a college major and choosing a career path, that the average American changes careers, not just jobs, seven times in their lifetimes. You never know when circumstances allow you to drop the grind and forge a new direction, like you heard Australian Maddy Reynolds do in a WASP episode a few weeks ago when she dumped the corporate world to become a pro trail runner. Melissa was the Vice President of Social Security and Managed Disability at GENEX for 22 years, sat on the company's executive team, and worked throughout the United States to create and deliver services to the disability insurance marketplace. But after a day on the set with famed screenwriter and filmmaker M Night Shyamalan, she decided to take a risk and left her career to jump into the unknown. Pursuing her dream of becoming a filmmaker became a reality in late 2018 when Melissa completed her first feature film, Beyond Sixty, which highlights stories of women making similar jumps, including the woman behind the original voice of Siri, the Madam CJ Walker biographer, and the sculptor of Lady Gaga's Fame perfume carriage. During 2019, Melissa's film was accepted by and screened at eight film festivals throughout the United States and Canada, winning awards and confirming that it is never too late to learn something new. Picked up by a distributor and released in 2021, the film is currently available on most streaming platforms. Melissa's second film, Climbing into Life, details the inspiring life story of Dierdre Wolownick, the oldest woman to ascend El Capitan, who also happens to be the mother of famed free solo climber Alex Honnold. The film is currently making the film festival rounds. Melissa is a champion to show that it isn't too late for people over 60, particularly women to explore new pathways and make a profound impact on the world. It's such a great message to share, and she does it with an infectious energy as you'll find out in this episode.Melissa Daveymelissadavey.combeyondsixty.commelissa@melissadavey.comFacebook Beyond Sixty DocumentaryInstagram @beyond60project and @climbing_into_lifeBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

EPISODE 26 DETAILS FEDERAL ORDER REQUIRES MANDATORY TESTING FOR COWS AS VIRUS SPREADS. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) issued a Federal Order Wednesday that requires testing for interstate movement of dairy cattle and mandatory reporting of positive test results. The order aims to prevent the spread of bovine influenza A virus (BIAV) in response to the detection of the virus in dairy cattle. Following the confirmation of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock in February 2022, over 1,100 HPAI detections have been identified on poultry farms in the U.S. Since late March 2024, USDA, along with other agencies and laboratories, investigated the emergence of H5N1 virus in dairy cows. Under the Federal Order, dairy cattle must receive a negative test for Influenza A virus at approved laboratories before interstate movement. Positive test results must be reported to USDA APHIS by laboratories and state veterinarians. The order aims to mitigate the risk of further spread of the virus, which poses a threat to both cattle and poultry, and to ensure the safety of livestock and the agricultural industry.

Thump Techno have dropped their first release as a various artists compilation. Comprising of 6 stellar artists that include ARON SC, EXIX, FUAM, Genex, Flores and TYRÄXX, with all proceeds going towards the Dublin Simon Community to help tackle the homelessness crisis in Dublin, Ireland. Thump Techno have announced that they are now branching into a label. Their vision will remain the same with the label as it has with events, where they seek to showcase hard and heavy techno music. This debut label release has been curated by Thump co-founder, DECADANCE. DECADANCE highlighted his wish to exhibit artists that inspire Thump creatively who they have had the pleasure of growing closer to on a personal level. The overall release will feature an array of pummelling kick drums and dark atmospheres throughout. Following this announcement, we are happy to share a premiere for this special release, which the collective will be donating all proceeds to the Dublin Simon Community, who are actively tackling the homelessness crisis in Dublin. Today we're delighted to premiere a track form exciting youngster, Flores. The budding DJ and producer has shown to be a force to be reckoned with as of late, playing an array of shows spanning all across the country, including Galway, Limerick, Offaly, Dublin, Waterford and more. Having supported the legendary Mauro Picotto in Galway, selling out a headline Shed Residents Show with Mav666 and a Cork headline show it is clear that the future is bright for this young, talented and driven DJ and producer. 'Enter The Gravil' is another glaring example of the deep rooted production knowledge that Flores possesses. A weapon of a recording, thundering kick drums combined with bellowing bass-lines and frantic melodies make for a track that truly represents turmoil from start to finish. Scattered vocals and crashing grooves complete the track. Manic listening guaranteed. All proceeds made will go toward the Dublin Simon Community who are actively tackling the homelessness crisis in Dublin. My guest, Melissa Davey changed careers at 65 and become a documentary filmmaker. For more than two decades she worked at https://www.genexservices.com/ (GENEX Services Inc.,) where she was recruited to build and operate the company's Social Security representation division. Prior to GENEX, Melissa had almost twenty years of diversified experience in the field of disability. Her second act is fueled by a lifelong passion for film and story-telling. Her film, https://www.beyondsixtyproject.com/ (Beyond Sixty,) is a documentary feature film about women over the age of 60. The film features the https://www.beyondsixtyproject.com/all (stories of 9 women,) ordinary in the way we all are and just as interesting. They include https://www.slashgear.com/780287/this-is-the-real-voice-behind-siri/ (Susan Bennett, the original voice of Siri,) the Madam CJ Walker biographer, https://www.beyondsixtyproject.com/paula-yankauskas (Paula Yankauskas,)who, in September 2016, became the oldest U.S. woman to swim the English Channel. To name just a few. “From a very early age women are made to believe that our relevance has an expiration date. My goal with the film is to show the power of resilience and the wisdom of experience we bring to the table. I created Beyond Sixty to challenge the way we think about aging and the value of our own stories.” We talked about how young people see us—some told Melissa they were tired of the stereotypes of aging women as irrelevant, feeble, unhappy—and how we see ourselves and others our age. It's not always pretty! Do you think you're too old to follow your big dream?... I asked Melissa if this felt like a really big leap. “Yeah, it was a big leap. However, my whole life has taken a kind of circuitous route at all times. Mainly because I'm so curious about things. So, I will change it up here and there and try new things. But never anything this drastically different.”How our perception of things changes “There comes this sense of self, which is a much deeper as you get older. Fear is lessened. It's not that it's not there. You don't want to fail. The fear, just it lessens somehow and it's manageable and you almost like expect it to be there. And it's like, okay, come on fear we're going to go try something else now.I wondered how much she had to sell her idea, herself as an unknown film maker, etc. “I really didn't have to pitch too much, which surprised me. I was just myself. And with the women that I brought in knew I'd never made a film before.” The cool thing about the production company “The three owners of this production company in Philly were three very young men. And I was referred to them just to have the conversation, to see if they could point me in the right direction. They were like, what a great idea. We want to hear these stories. These were 28, 30 year old guys. So that was exciting.”Who says we can't get along with the younger gens. Some of my takeaways · You really are never too old to make your dream come true · Aging does not diminish a person's ability to be relevant and contribute · Everyone's story has the power to help someone else at any age Find The Beyond Sixty project https://www.instagram.com/beyond60project/ (on Insta) and https://www.facebook.com/BeyondSixtyProject/ (Facebook) If one of your goals is to age in great health, looking like the fabulon you are inside, laughing and loving all the way then start with my https://rebelliouswellnessover50.com/power5/ (Power of 5 mini email workshop). All a woman needs to stay—or get—fit, healthy, sassy and sane. And if you're at that tipping point called peri-menopause, you might be interested in my book,...

2020 will go down as one of the most difficult years many of us have experienced. After living through months dominated by a pandemic, economic downturn, natural disasters and a divisive election, most of us can’t wait to turn the calendar on Jan. 1. We asked that question to Genex’s Rich Leonardo, Dr. Lisa O’Connor and Mariana Diaz. Their answers may surprise you. Take a listen.
Have you ever wondered how to become a filmmaker? As your second-act career? Melissa Davey knows how - she's done it and she returns to our retirement podcast to share her lessons learned. Her story is about smart risk-taking and the value of a growth mindset. But it's also about the courage to walk away from a career to follow her dream when the opportunity presented itself. She took it and her story is one that's sure to inspire people. Risk-taking Can Lead to New Avenues When people think of a calling they think of people like Steve Javie and his compelling story. But many have other types of callings they carry inside. These are dreams deferred, often from passions developed early in life and interests put to the side during working lives. But later life can serve up opportunities to do what you really want to do. __________________________ We discuss with Melissa: The story of how she became a documentary filmmaker The lessons she learned from the people in The Beyond Sixty Project film What she learned from the experience of making it The stories from the film that resonate with her even more today How her life has changed since the release of The Beyond Sixty Project The benefits – and the challenges - of working with an intergenerational creative team What’s it been like to be a grandparent during COVID Her advice for people who may want to pursue a Second Act career And what's next for her ________________________ Bio Melissa Davey is a documentary filmmaker who lives in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Melissa's second act is fueled by a lifelong passion for film and story-telling. _______________________ Wise Quotes On Second Acts "What I have found is that there are huge numbers of people in their sixties and seventies who are finishing careers, or maybe even already a second career and are saying, Okay, I'm done with that. I don't want to work at that pace. I don't want to work possibly for another individual or a big corporation or whatever it might be. I want to do something meaningful for me that will also benefit others. That's what I'm hearing all the time. What can I do to keep going, but improve upon myself? And one of the greatest things we can do is try something new and something that might impact others in a positive way." On Dreams (and Deadlines) "I think people need to not discount dreams. And I think a lot of times messaging when we were growing up was, Oh, that doesn't, that doesn't make sense. You go to college, you get a job, and you build a career. And that's what you do. People might have other artistic dreams or, any type of dream, that might be pooh-poohed by either family members or society in general. I think that we should not ignore that. And I think that we should - especially - not ignore that as we get older because of the calendar, because we only have so much time left." On Taking Calculated Risks "Taking risks is one of the most important ingredients in life. If we don't take risks to step out of the boxes that we construct for ourselves, we don't experience new things that may challenge us - and may change the way we view life, people, ourselves, etc. So in order for growth to occur, I think we need to take risks. And I certainly heard that from all of the women that I spoke with [for the film] and, in retrospect, I look at my own life and I do see that the risks I took - and I t...

The independent medical exam (IME) is a valuable tool to move claims forward, unless your IME provider doesn’t have a strong quality assurance (QA) process. Even the slightest error can make a big difference in determining whether your report is considered valid. In today’s Inside Workers’ Comp, Donna Bradshaw, vice president of IME services at Genex, explains how to determine if your IME provider’s QA process is up to snuff.

Our world has changed in many ways since then, but one thing that hasn’t is Genex field case managers’ commitment to move claims forward. In today’s Inside Workers’ Comp, we talk to Tim Howard, Senior Vice President of field case management, to discuss how his team is operating under restrictions and how he sees the process evolving as states start to open up.

Today, we think about the nurse case managers on the front lines, helping employees recover from injury and illness. Their determination to provide exceptional care goes beyond the physical injury and extends to improving the whole person. In one case, even with her state on lockdown due to coronavirus, Genex case manager Becky Almskog, RN, BSN, CCM, of Colorado faced a life-or-death dilemma — how to keep a homeless, at-risk injured employee off the streets and on the road to recovery.
In today’s world, payers need complete transparency into their IME program, from big picture to claims-level data. But how do you make that information easily digestible and current so it provides a true comprehensive view into IME program data? For Jim Harris, vice president of data and analytics, and his team at Genex, the answer was creating a dashboard which provides real-time metrics to help organizations manage costs and outcomes. Jim joins us today to talk about it.

Although data has the power to inform people, stories have the power to change. Join Nate Woodbury and Valerie Morris as they discuss how stories influence others. We're talking influence again. So, of course, I invited Valerie Morris. And in this video, we're talking about stories and how you can use stories to influence very important school that I want to learn. So that's we're going to talk about. So, before we talk about the how... Like why are stories influential? -Well, you know, I mean think back to your childhood. Stories are at the core of everyone's childhood. And honestly, if you pay really close attention, stories are a huge piece of our adult life too. You go to the movies, you're experiencing stories, you read books, you're experiencing stories. Honestly, you're experiencing your own story day by day. But stories are really important because they allow us to tap into things and get ourselves part of the story in a way that data just can't do. In our world today, especially in digital marketing, data is super important. You can get so much from analytics. Whether you're looking at YouTube videos or social media or your website stats. There's so much information out there. But data only has the power to inform. Stories have the power to change someone. And when you can tap into a story, you can really use those data points but you can really make someone do something different. Data just gives someone some information. -Well, then I have a challenge then. Can you think of a story that really enhances someone's influence? You know, you see maybe the before and after. -Well, you know, I don't know if it's one exact story but I think with nonprofits which I've done a lot of consulting with nonprofits. And honestly, like you encounter them on a day to day basis. The most powerful messages and the most powerful asks for money tend to be surrounded by a story. So, if you're going to ask someone to write a check for a million dollars, you want to be able to tug at their heartstrings. And show that here's what the impact of you giving that dollar... -I've got an example of a charity. -Yeah. -So, I was at I think it was it inbound in Boston last September. I can't remember the guy's name. But he told his stories background of being this director of clubs and being an alcohol and drug addict and whatnot and finally deciding he was going to change. So, he told his story of change. He just wanted a complete 360. He went and was on one of those medical service ships. -Okay. -He had to pay to provide service because of his background. But he did change and he ended up creating this charity called Charity Water and shows what they've done to bring water to impoverished nations as clean water so they don't have disease and whatnot. -Yeah. -The story really moved me. -Yeah. -It was... It was definitely the story. And so, that's something that that I support. So that makes a lot of sense. -Yeah. Now,, if they just said, there are X amount of billion of people that don't have clean water. You may not have been as likely to pull out your checkbook and support that organization. -Still exists? -I actually just wrote a check the other day. I have I actually need to reorder some Genex. But yeah, I mean or your credit card. You know, but... You know, because you could relate to the story and see the transformation, it made that much more of a lasting impact. It brought emotion to the statistics. That's for sure. And then I definitely, I can think of an example of my own. Because I'm big on numbers, I'm big on stats. And for years, I've talked about YouTube and what's possible. And now that I have some amazing stories that go along with it, I found that that's what people are really inspired by him. Telling him the same things. I'm teaching the same exact strategies. But I have people, you know, come to me after I speak and to say, "That was so actionable. That was... I really appreciate that. That was really inspiring. I know exactly what I'm going to do." And I've been teaching the same stuff for years. -Yeah. -Must be the stories well. -You'll love this because your brand is Be The Hero, right? So, Donald Miller talks about story brand and he's got this whole program. But he talks a lot about identifying who the hero in your marketing story is. And that's what I really like you've done now. You take the story and you're talking about other people who have had success as the hero. It's not you being the hero saying, "I can do all this stuff, I can do all this stuff." But when you can place someone else as the one who is succeeding and the hero of the story, you can really change people's minds. They can start to picture, "Oh, well. I could be a YouTube sensation and have all this great traffic driving to my programs. I could do that." They can picture themselves being the hero when you talk to them that way. -Very cool. So, what about somebody who doesn't think that they have a good story? What should they do? -Well... You know, I think there's moments where we all don't love our story. And I think part of that comes down to embracing who you are. You know, getting true on who you are what your story is. And think through. You know, what things have you triumphed over? What accomplishments have you made? What impact have you been able to have on other people? You know, if you think really hard, you can come up with some things. So even if you don't love your story you're not feeling super-confident, start mapping it out like... You know, you've got these things. And it can be an uncomfortable process. You know, sitting and talking about the top things that you are successful at is a really hard thing for many people to do. But it can be really helpful. Especially if you're out trying to market your services or your expertise. You have to know what those strengths are. So, a story came to mind of I was traveling to Boise. -Yeah. -And I was thinking that I didn't have any good stories to tell. I was trying to like, "Well, what's what's my compelling story that I could put in a speech?" And Doug and I were traveling to Boise. And he was really good at asking questions. And he asked questions about how I started my company. And he was totally fascinating like, "Wow! What a story." And I... And then I told him about the experience that I had of working with Craigslist and how I got so many leads, advertising all across the country. Then he was just like, "Well, that was... That was interesting. That's a crazy story." And then he kept...He kept telling me everything I was telling him was these amazing stories and like, "I guess I do got stories." Didn't know they were so amazing. But that was... That was a really good experience. And so, I've learned that I've got to find Doug's. That can find my stories that I don't that I don't see. -Yeah. Yeah. Asking questions can be really helpful and having people in your life that ask a lot of questions to you can be helpful as well. But yeah, getting used to asking questions to other people can be a good way of just getting used to talking in that way. And then maybe you could ask those questions to yourself. -So, I've noticed that lately, when people are sharing stories, people are willing to be a little bit more vulnerable. Why do you think that that's so effective? -Well, so I think when you are able to open up about something very real, raw, hard, people will respect that. They realize that, "Hey, this is something that was probably really difficult to share." But not only that, so they have a respect for you first off. But not only that but they also recognize that they might be able to relate to that and they haven't necessarily shared that with other people. So, you know, mental health is something that people are talking about a lot more these days. The more someone opens up about depression, the more likely someone else who's struggling with depression but hasn't told anyone is going to be willing to talk to someone or talk to that person who shared originally. So, that's a pretty serious example but it could be anything in terms of, "Hey, I wanted to sell on Craigslist too." And they know that you do that. And they hear your story, they sit there and they can relate. They can put themselves in your shoes and see, "Hey, I could do something and put my own spin on it." You know, so when you share stories, you invite someone to kind of imagine and relate in a way that simply sharing facts doesn't allow you to do. I think stories help activate the mind a little bit more on a deeper level and allow us to tap into things like emotions and like relatability that you just can't do when you're just sharing facts. -Now, I really understand that there's real power and storytelling. And I want I want to improve my story. Do you have any resources you could recommend for me and for others watching that want to improve their storytelling ability? -Honestly, story brand is a great website. Donald Miller has put together some great resources. There's a ton of free resources there and there's also a ton of paid resources. And I know that you can also always do some searches and find people who are certified in his training who can help you write copy. But you know, if you're just trying to get clear on your story, go check out their website. There's a lot of great free resources. -Well, thanks for joining us on this episode. I definitely want to recommend Valerie Morris' book. We're All Ears. You can find it on Amazon. Be sure to subscribe because we'll be back tomorrow.

Women who were over the age of 60 but who were continuing to be relevant and not hanging it up, not just retiring in the true sense. Some of them were going onto second and third acts. Some were just staying in their current positions and expanding them or changing their roles somehow. But I wanted to highlight the storytelling aspect of it because when I started to do research for the project, all I could find were celebrity women. The only older women that you’ll find as you Google women with great stories are people you’ve heard of – celebrities. So, it took some digging and talking to lots of people and getting referrals…to see if women would be interested in telling their stories because I think that there is great value in not just the younger generation hearing these stories, but also older women and women and men who are thinking of making a change later in life.” On Lifelong Learning “I think that’s the argument that we have with ourselves where, frankly, I couldn’t argue with myself any longer. It was more the opposite – why wouldn’t you do it now because if you don’t do it now, you’re not going to do it at all. And talking with, obviously, lots of women now over the age of 60, they have the same sentiment that there’s this train that you get on in life and sometimes you just stay on it. You don’t think too much about other things that you might do but when you do, you realize that, as you age, you just gain more experience. You gain more confidence and you have the ability to learn. As long as you’re healthy you have the ability to learn new things.” On Taking Risks “I think people get into a rhythm. It’s life. You do your thing every day, your routine. Coming out of the routine opens you up. Just when we were kids and we would go to school and we’d learn a new subject or we’d talk to a teacher. I consider myself very lucky. And if I hadn’t thought about all this and done all this, I would …(wow). I’m not an extraordinary person and it’s very clear to me, I know I’m not. I know that I’m an average person but I know that I am willing to take risks.” ___________________________ For more on Melissa Davey https://www.beyondsixtyproject.com/documentary/ Follow Melissa: Twitter:@DaveyLissa Instagram:#beyond60 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/beyondsixtyProject/ ____________________________ Side Note And if you’re interested in learning more about the saxophonist mentioned who’s also pursuing his dream: https://www.mikecaseyjazz.com/home-encore __________________________
