I've completely lost my voice after this episode. That should help me with the whole podcasting thing…what a weekend! Sundance Institute Film Festival has been on my bucket list since I was small enough to bathe in buckets. So, a very long time.We were super excited to participate in the first-ever South Asian Lodge hosted by filmmaker and director Shruti Ganguly, author, writer, and producer Tanya Selvaratnam and the non-profit organization 1497, whose mission is to support and uplift talent of South Asian descent to challenge their historical exclusion from and underrepresentation in the American film and TV industry. You can learn more about their mission here- https://www.1497.org/A special shoutout to The Product of Culture team and Kis Cubed Events for helping make the impossible, possible. The entire weekend ran smoothly from beginning to end.The two days of programming included a 20th anniversary celebration of Bend It Like Beckham, as the movie's 2003 premiere at Sundance marked a watershed event for South Asian representation in film. Congratulations to the entire team for putting this historic event together. Many Sikhs all over the world have joined together in support of protests by Indian farmers against new laws proposed by the Indian government. Solidarity has come from musicians, singers, sportspeople and many young second and third generation diaspora Sikhs who have joined social media and local drive-thru protests in British, Canadian and American cities. A culture of protest is embedded in Sikhism through prayer, songs and stories, which inspires this sense of activism. Modern-day Sikhs, through their poetry or music or through their voluntary work or political campaigns, explain how their religion's history of protest against persecution and standing up to injustice, inspires their view of the world in 2021. Pavneet is a poet whose work is unapologetic and seeks to stand up for women, against a caste and patriarchal system. DJ Rekha, based in New York, ran a broadcast through the 2020 US Presidential election night live on Twitch, and linked her music playlists to political campaigns against poverty, racism and sexism. Sukhdeep Singh stood for the rights of gay people in India by setting up Gaylaxy, an online magazine, at 22 years old. He started a queer collective on Instagram in 2019 and he wore a rainbow turban to the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The roots and passing down of stories in families from Sikh history, as well as the use of social media to spread campaign messages, are, they say, helping to nurture and grow a shared sense of Sikh activism against inequality and oppression. This week on Brown Mom, DJ Rekha (they/them) stops by for a chat about identity and gender identity. Let's be clear: if it sounds like I'm fangirling on parts of this episode, well, it's because I am. I have zero chill in life, but even less so during this chat. I have been a massive DJ Rekha fan for decades, from those years at Basement Bhangra to Rekha's Sunday Sessions, quarantine sets they played to help us get through the Pandemic. I love listening to Rekha because whether it's an Insta set, a panel they are speaking on, or their Twitter feed, I feel like I'm a little better, happier and smarter after. Rekha and I talk about a lot of things: pronouns, gender, Whatsapping Jasmine Sandlas, Queens, Pandemic DJ-ing, among other topics. And yes, I asked if we'll ever get another Basement night. I had to. Follow DJ Rekha on Instagram @DJRekha @DJRekha on Twitter DJRekha.com on the Interwebs Follow Brown Mom on social media: @Raakstar on Twitter @RaakstarWrites on Instagram And if you like the episode, leave us a review and subscribe. In the new discussion segment of American Desis, Akaash and Arjun discuss themes that resonated with them during the interview. In response to this week's interview with DJ Rekha, our host discuss the nature of what was one of the more difficult interviews they have had. Akaash was particularly angry about how he felt dismissed and condescended to. They attempt to sift through the tone and attitude to get to the things they valued from the interview. Some of those topics include the necessity to know history, and how it affects the way we see the present; the nature of our community differentiating from other members of the community and how that hurts us; and fashion somehow also comes up, in regards to how the change in attitude towards South Asian clothing is reflective of where we are now. They then engage with the community through their new forum section of the website, as well as the tweets and emails they receive. This week that includes topics of black and white identity, a series of critiques about the past interview, and the possible futility of cultural preservation. They also get to announce their new partnership with audioBoom! As always we ask y'all to review and rate. Discuss and share our podcast! We are only as strong as our community and we continue to hope you join!
It's funny: in discussing culture and community, we have talked about language, movies, family, religion and sex. I think we are missing a fairly major one though...Oh yeah! Music! Music is one of the purest form sof expression- an art form that cuts through to the core of who we are. So it stands to argue that look at a people's music gives a glimpse into who they are. So what does that mean for the American Desi community? Well, there has been one form of South Asian music that has come to dominate the landscape of Desi music in the US: Bhangra. This week we are thrilled to speak with Rekha Malhotra, better known as DJ Rekha. Akaash calls her the first "cool indian" in American culture and others have called her the reason Bhangra came to the US. She is best known for her monthly parties that have been going on in NYC since 1997 called Basement Bhangra. We sit down with her to speak about the origins of her monthly parties and how they grew out of her childhood home basement. We talk about how her South Asianness affected her growing up and how that has influenced the way she lives her life today.
