Experiencing chronic pain or anxiety? The answer to relief could be held in your body. There's no question that our minds and bodies are connected, but did you know that our bodies have a direct connection to our spirit as well? In fact, some have said that the body is actually the soul's subconscious. On today's show, we aim to answer burning questions like how exactly is it that our bodies can affect our minds, and our minds affect our bodies….which ultimately end up affecting our soul...and we provide some tips to help you fix those challenges you're experiencing, once and for all!We learn:1. How stress and worry can cause physical pain without any detectable medical issues. 2. How movement and posture can be used to relax and reduce pain. 3. How to transition from fight-or-flight mode to relaxation mode through mindful techniques and awareness. And a whole lot more! "When you have stress, I mean, there's hormonal changes, there's gut issues. But one of the least talked about areas is how your body physically changes in response to whatever stress or you have, whether it's mental, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and the body starts to change physically. So it's more than saying, hey, Will, you need to relax, chill, man. You can't just do that to someone and expect them to know how to do that." – Dr. Amy Novotny Dr Amy Novotny learned that physical and mental stress can lead to physical changes in the body, and that the muscles can contract without our awareness. She works with clients to help them understand how to relax and how to position their body to reduce pain. She also encourages them to stabilize their new relaxed position to become comfortable with it so that the muscles don't revert back to the old habits. Through her teachings, her clients learn how to reduce pain and create a new, relaxed positions for their bodies. I pause a lot more. And I would say that my ability to respond has been less bit based on fear, and more based on solutions. So I'm not so emotionally reactive, because I'm more mindful. Thoughts on Breathing When you breathe, you want to be able to feel your breastbone, melt in as you exhale, and feel your belly spill out. When you do that, it will help bring all of your attention to your body. Therefore you can feel everything relaxed, allowing you to be mindful of the present. Suggested Resources Book: Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage, and Faith Book: Success Habits of Super Achievers App: Calm App: Headspace Bullying Story I was bullied as a child, I was somewhat popular during some times of my life, and other times I wasn't. And so I've been on the receiving end of being bullied and it's a hard thing to go through. I think when it comes to mindfulness regarding that when you're on the receiving end, it's hard to do anything other than to be in a freeze-mode or think how do I run away? And in terms of the person who's doing the bullying, I think there needs to be some awareness that that person is hurting somehow. They're lacking attention so they're seeking attention. They're seeking to assert themselves, because somehow, they're not getting that attention, or they're getting bullied themselves at home. I think we need to look around us and say, How are our own interactions affecting others? So many times, we may be using our words that really create some hurt and other people, and then they go to someone else. And they might bully that person just to be able to feel some type of satisfaction for the hurt feelings from a different interaction. The allure of being your own boss, setting your own schedule and reaping the rewards of your hard work can make the idea of being an entrepreneur mightily enticing. But being a small-business owner also involves long hours and constant uncertainty. For many, it's even more challenging than parenting. Of the 1,001 small-business owners surveyed by Bank of America for the bank's Spring semi-annual report on the state of small business, 41 percent report that managing their business is their top personal stressor. Only nine percent choose raising children. In this episode we discuss: 1) Learning to understand our nervous system, how to see when it is regulated and when it isn't, what that looks like, the effect it has on all of our relationships and how to take the small, consistent steps to learn how to regulate it. 2) The pain our body can trap for years, the inability of the body to pull back from our nervous system responses and how persistent increasing stress levels, only exacerbates our body's response to pain. 3) The process of learning how to let go, allowing our body to stabilize, then let go again and stabilize. This process of letting go and creating stability also allows our body to find a neutral state to return to instead of constantly rebounding between the two extremes. Her background in orthopedics, sports, geriatrics, balance disorders, nerve injuries, and most recently, chronic pain; and influences from coursework at the Postural Restoration Institute gave her the foundation to develop this treatment method to address a wide variety of painful and restrictive conditions. Did you know that roughly 50 million people suffer from chronic pain in the USA alone? That means you probably know someone, possibly even yourself, who tackles this pain with a never ending line of medication. But what if it didn't have to be that way? What if you could eliminate your pain by simply changing the way you breathe. Dr. Amy Novotny founded the PABR® Institute with the mission to provide pain, stress and anxiety relief to those who seek a naturalistic form of treatment. Her unique approach comes from 11 years of experience in orthopedics, sports, geriatrics, balance disorders, nerve injuries, and most recently, chronic pain; and influences from coursework at the Postural Restoration Institute gave her the foundation to develop this treatment method to address a wide variety of painful and restrictive conditions. Her methods have helped countless people reduce and eliminate pain, stress, anxiety, orthopedic surgeries, sleep deprivation and the need for medications. She co-authored two Amazon #1 Best-Selling books Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage and Faith and Success Habits of Super Achievers, which share her journey on how and why she developed the PABR® Method. In this episode of the Rock Your Money, Rock Your Life, Amy and I discuss how she discovered the power of breathwork and why she is so passionate about helping others live pain free, how she ran 6 marathons in 6 days, and how our nervous system is connected to our breath.

Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: How taking away the flight or fight sympathetic tone out of your muscles allows them to contract voluntarily without tension. Why changing your breathing helps calm your nervous system down and improves your running. Why your knees should be higher than your hips when you are in a seated position. How it's important to keep your ribs and shoulders down when you're inhaling. Why you need to work on relaxing your back muscles, so they aren't in a flight or fight position. Dr. Amy Novotny founded the PABR Institute™ with the mission to provide pain, stress and anxiety relief to those who seek a naturalistic form of treatment when other treatment methods have fallen short. Her unique approach comes from her experience treating in a variety of settings and with a wide range of patient populations over the past 10 years. Her background in orthopedics, sports, geriatrics, balance disorders, nerve injuries, and most recently, chronic pain; and influences from coursework at the Postural Restoration Institute gave her the foundation to develop this treatment method to address a wide variety of painful and restrictive conditions. She has helped countless clients avoid orthopedic surgeries including joint replacements, disc herniation repairs, lumbar fusions, rotator cuff repairs, and ACL reconstructions. These methods have even helped people overcome sleep deprivation, anxiety attacks and generalized stress. She co-authored a #1 Best-Selling book Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage and Faith, which shares her journey on how and why she developed the PABR Method™. You can find out more about Amy at pabrInstitute.com. Amy has figured out an amazing new breathing technique that can alleviate stress, pain and angst. She shares her techniques, which are very easy to follow. Here are the steps to changing your breathing - the good news being that you have everything you need and this is a free resource. The four step breathing process is to breathe in your nose, pause, breathe out your mouth like you're blowing out of a straw and pause for 3 seconds. As you exhale, you want to bring your sternum down (not up) and belly out (not in). For many this will be a whole new way to breathe. You can use this form of breathing to help your nervous system and to give your body greater ability to take in oxygen. Amy is happy to hear from anyone looking to learn more and shared graciously that she's happy to send you a free video on overcoming pain and anxiety using this breathing technique. How do you deal with pain and stress? We live in a society where most people manage their problems by using medication. A pill for a headache. A pill to sleep. A pill for anxiety. A pill for stress. While this form of relief is instantaneous, we are merely treating our symptoms and not the underlying causes. Well, what if I told you that relief could be as simple as just adjusting the way you breathe? On this episode of the Fall In Love with Fitness podcast, Amy and I discuss why she developed the PABR method, why the way we are taught to hold ourselves is preventing us from living pain free, and how breathwork can improve not only our physical health, but our mental health as well.

Today, it is my pleasure and privilege to talk with, fellow mastermind group member (and fellow “phone book celebrity”), Nick Aalerud. Nick talks candidly about his reset stories, the lessons he learned from them, turnkey real estate deals, and the importance of stress-testing the deal. He also talks about his book, Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage, and Faith; all of the profits from which go to charity. Minute Markers: 00:23 – Introduction 02:16 – A little about Nick and his background in real estate 05:37 – Nick's first hard reset button 08:38 – Where to find cash flow deals/cap rates 12:00 – Multi-family flip/bird strategy 15:09 – Nick's second hard reset and the lesson learned after 17:11 – Nick's other real estate investments and business 18:12 – Nick on bigger assets 24:15 – Don't believe the hype 26:42 – “Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage, and Faith” book 28:34 – How to get in contact with Nick 29:28 – Thank you for listening to the Big Mike Fund Podcast Quotes: 08:05 – I certainly agree with you to do the due diligence learning, to do the due diligence is the absolute key. And owning your own failures or successes is important. An indomitable spirit, you fall, you get up. That’s another key lesson so, it makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your sharing. It's not easy to share, but it shows you’re not afraid to share even failures, which is a sign of strength.“.” – Mike Zlotnik 14:44 – “And small assets. They’re not necessarily bad assets at all. In fact, they’re great assets. It's much easier to manage a small renovation than a big project. The exit happens to take place a whole lot faster.” – Mike Zlotnik 06:51 – “Learning to do my own due diligence with partnerships, learning that also taking ownership. I spent 6–9 months being just angry at this other person, other individual. I really couldn’t let it go until someone told me. It was actually Marshall Sylver, the national hypnotist, you might know him. He basically just said, “Own it. This was your failure. No matter what he did, you went through with it. You didn’t do enough due diligence. Why buy out of state your first five deals. Just own it, you made this mistake.” Once I own that for myself, it really helped propel me forward to sharpen my pencil.” – Nick Aalerud 26:35 – “Stress test the deal. I’m sure, I know you do that too. Stress test every deal, 100%.” – Nick Aalerud Resources: Nick Aalerud, Facebook AA Real Estate Group, website Nick Aalerud, LinkedIn
