Do you suffer from age-related aches and pains that traditional stretching or medications won't relieve? Are you doing all the sports recovery things and still feel pain? It's possible that the cause isn't actually aging, but because your body is in a state of fight-or-flight. Tune into this episode and discover how simple posture adjustments and diaphragmatic breathing can transform your physical performance and well-being.In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Dr. Amy Novotny, founder of the PABR® Institute. Together they explore a naturalistic approach to pain relief, stress reduction, and overall wellness. Dr. Novotny shares her groundbreaking work on how altering your breathing mechanics and ribcage positioning can shift the body from a fight-or-flight state to a state of rest and relaxation, helping to reduce muscle tension and improve physical performance. By addressing the autonomic nervous system this approach can relieve digestive issues, and decrease the impact of chronic stress, and this episode offers insightful strategies for relieving pain, improving sleep, and even overcoming trauma-related physiological responses—all without the need for traditional stretching or medications. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (05:27) Amy shares her professional journey(09:47) The three main components of the autonomic nervous system. Amy explains the results of a patient changing their breathing mechanics(15:15) Amy explains muscle contraction and why it's worse with age and gives an example of how to relax the breastbone(26:47) What should you notice about back muscle tension (29:11) Belly breathing versus diaphragmatic breathing and how chewing and swallowing impacts your TMJ jointKEY TAKEAWAYS: Dr. Amy Novotny discovered that altering her ribcage position and breathing mechanics allowed her to shift from a fight-or-flight state (sympathetic) to a state of rest-and-relaxation (parasympathetic), significantly reducing muscle tension and enhancing her physical performance without traditional stretching or rehabilitation techniques.Dr. Novotny's work highlights how chronic stress and muscle tension, especially in the abdominal region, can contribute to digestive issues. People can naturally relieve physical tension, improve digestion, and even overcome trauma-related physiological responses by addressing posture and breathing mechanics.Unlike voluntary muscle contractions (e.g., lifting an object), emotional stress triggers involuntary muscle contractions that can persist unnoticed. Over time, this accumulated tension can lead to chronic pain, which is often mistaken for age-related discomfort.QUOTES: (06:11) “I realized if I changed my breathing mechanics, very different than breath work, but if I changed my mechanics of how I held my rib cage and how that affected my diaphragm, I could run eight miles in 55 minutes, get off the treadmill and not have to stretch.” Dr. Amy Novotny(20:45) “You must physically train your body to get in the correct position again.” Dr. Amy Novotny(28:51) “There are specific techniques that can help us hone that interoception.” Jenn Trepeck(33:52) “Diarrhea, constipation, all those types of things as we know, are also connected to trauma." Jenn Trepeck.(34:45) “I'm a big fan of playing with it. See what happens. Because what do we have to lose?” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramReawaken Your Health Podcast - Guest: Jenn Trepeck GUESTS RESOURCES:Dr. Amy Novotny - FacebookDr. Amy Novotny - LinkedInDr. Amy Novotny - InstagramDr. Amy Novotny - TwitterPABR Institute - WebsiteDr. Amy Novotny - YouTubeGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Dr. Amy Novotny founded the PABR® Institute with the mission to provide pain, stress and anxiety relief to those who seek a naturalistic form of treatment when other treatment methods have fallen short. Welcome to this week's episode of "Mindful Living with Amy Novotny". In this episode, we'll be talking about how to calm down our nervous system and get out of the fight or flight response.Have you ever experienced that feeling of being stuck in a state of heightened anxiety, where everything seems like a threat and you feel constantly on edge? Well, that's what we call the fight or flight response, and it's something that our bodies have evolved to do in response to stressors. But sometimes, our bodies can get stuck in this state, even when there's no real threat present. And that's when we start to experience symptoms like anxiety, panic attacks, and even physical health problems. So, how can we get out of the fight or flight response and calm down our nervous system?Firstly, it's important to recognize when you're experiencing this response. Some signs may include feeling tense, heart racing, or sweating profusely. Once you've identified this, it's time to start practicing some simple techniques that can help calm you down. One technique that works really well for many people is deep breathing. Simply take a deep breath in, hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly release it. You can repeat this a few times until you feel calmer.Another technique is to use mindfulness to become aware of your thoughts and emotions. Often, just acknowledging what's going on in your mind can help to reduce the intensity of your fight or flight response.Additionally, taking time to do relaxing activities such as taking a walk in nature, reading a book, or taking a bath can also help you relax.Remember, it's important to take care of your body and mind by practicing self-care and getting the rest you need. This will not only help you feel better, but also help to keep your nervous system calm and in balance. To reach out to Amy Novotny Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dramynovotny/ (https://www.facebook.com/dramynovotny/)LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-amy-novotny/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-amy-novotny/)Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anovotn/ (https://www.instagram.com/anovotn/)Twitter: https://twitter.com/amynovotnyaz (https://twitter.com/amynovotnyaz)website: https://pabrinstitute.com/ (https://pabrinstitute.com/)Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrAmyNovotny (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvRZjkWBxOArmujS9rUN8ig)Reach out to Infusion HealthPensighthttps://pensight.com/x/infusionhealthWebsite http://infusionhealthpodcast.com/?fbclid=IwAR0q2WW-No0O4XRbgRNVdmgo0vhqvQ18w2k3N9UohNl2vRbazqHuQFjU00IWe're excited to have you with us for today's show, and we hope you'll tune in for more great discussions on FB! I've spent the last couple of years exploring the power and wisdom that we have access to within OURSELVES as human beings, with my guests on this show. They have transformed my own understanding of what we're capable of, and have challenged my own beliefs of what is truly possible and accessible by hearing and holding space for their stories. My guest today does not fall short of that, by any means. Jessie Rose is a Relationship & Identity Breakthrough Coach and has a background in Core Process Psychotherapy and is trained and qualified as a Master Coach in the Personal Development field. Transforming trauma, suffering & limitation into personal freedom and success in relationships, health, performance, and purpose-led-service-based careers. Whilst being true to oneself, and truly aligned to ones purpose and vision. In 2005, Jessie had a near-death experience that also hospitalized her for months. Her care-consultant told her she had just 24-hours to live, and offered her no real hope of recovery, so Jessie had no choice but to come home to herself. She managed to internalize her strength and was able to make a miraculous, and unexplainable recovery. Her experiences taught her that the human spirit and the human body are capable of far more than we think possible and to never give up. About Sherry Shaban: Montreal-based podcaster, YouTuber and fitness and life coach, Sherry Shaban, is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified Athletic Therapist, an Osteopath, and the Director of Fitness for Rock Thomas's M1 Mastermind. With over 20 years of experience in her specialty, Sherry has dedicated her life to helping thousands of people transform their Athletic identity to become who they are meant to be through a unique anti-diet, self loving, simple approach. Sherry believes that our physical body is the direct reflection of our internal environment and that transformation happens from the inside out. Sherry's passion of helping others through their own health & wellness transformation journey stems from her own trials and tribulations: at the tender age of 16, Sherry was hit by a car, and the outcome of that accident nearly left her paralyzed. She underwent her first back surgery one month before her 17th birthday. The second surgery in 2012 came at a time when she was just opening her first CrossFit gym in Montreal. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where she discovered she was just 2 millimeters away from paralysis. Through private coaching, her signature online coaching programs, "Making Peace with Food" and "Advanced PowHer", her YouTube workouts and podcast, Sherry works with a diverse population of Athletes - from beginners to professionals athletes. She believes that we all have an obstacle - whether it be a struggle with injury, weight, past traumas or limiting beliefs. “Overcoming the obstacle first starts with changing our belief systems,” she says. “If we think we can't, then we will always be right.” Sherry has been featured on various podcast shows such as Stop Stretching with Yogi Aaron, Leader's Lab with Ken Eslick, The Wellness Hour with Dr Amy Novotny, and Mission Matters. What We Discuss In This Episode: Sherry shares her powerful journey where for the first few years of being a gym owner, she felt like a phony. She was frustrated with herself, disappointed and angry for being a “victim” of her circumstances, unable to demonstrate a single squat. But her turning point towards recovery came from understanding that one of the central elements to transformation is to let go of debilitating and self-limiting thoughts, and to begin to rewrite a new story. Sherry has made it her life mission to help others do the same: releasing self-doubt, create a new belief system and athletic identity, and become the person they are always meant to be. Sherry refers to her clients as “Athletes,” helping them unplug from diet culture and exercise-punishment, and step into a new relationship with their body, mind and environment. She helps her Athletes view food as fuel for performance, recovery and transformation and their training as a lifestyle ritual that becomes a basis of the Athletic mindset. We discuss “Fat Loss 101”, which is a big thing for women in perimenopause, even postmenopausal. Mindset definitely plays a role. Sherry loves this topic as she's often asked, “How do you eat? How do you count your calories? What are your macros? Or what are your what is your exercise?” Sherry is an intuitive eater, an intuitive mover, and an intuitive exerciser. When we're focused on diet, and especially if we're following an app or we're following a particular handout that our nutritionist gave us, we're bypassing the body's natural intuitive cues as to when we should eat, how much we should eat, and when we should stop eating. In North America and in Western societies where we have the most abundance of foods, and we have the most abundance and information -- and the most abundance of different types of diet, it's interesting that we're the ones struggling the most with disease. We're the ones who are struggling the most with overweight and with health. Why is that? Because we are so confused. Fat Loss 101 has to start with releasing diets because diets don't work. What does work, though, is starting to add habits that align with your lifestyle that you can find them sustainable over time. With a diet mentality, we usually have the mindset of, “Oh, I can't have cake this week, because I'm on a diet,” or you go to a barbecue, and it's “I can't have that glass of wine, or I can't have a second helping of food because I'm sticking to the macros on my app.” Whenever we say the word can't in our mind, what we're really saying is that we want it, but we're not allowing ourselves to have it. So, ditch diets & start to incorporate habits that are sustainable. Sherry says one of the best habits, that is really the gift that keeps on giving, is walking. All you need is a pair of shoes, you go outside, you connect with nature, you disconnect with the electronics, everything else at home. And as you're walking as you're moving, it is such a low intensity movement, that it's not going to stress the joints, and it's going to just give you pleasure. We also talk about hormones – the two most important hormones relating to weight are insulin and cortisol. Sherry shares what they are, what they do, and the impact on our lives if they're out of balance. Also, when we're stressed, it's hard to fall asleep, or when we've watched a movie or watch news that's extremely disturbing, it starts to impact the rest of our day and gets in the way of our sleep. When we sacrifice our sleep, and we don't get proper rest and restful sleep, what ends up happening is we start to deeply even imbalanced the hormones and start on that vicious cycle of cravings and hunger. We touched on intermittent fasting – a huge topic in the health and wellness space right now -- and how we can receive benefits from intermittent fasting in as little as 12 hours. “The sky's the limit. Experiencing chronic pain or anxiety? The answer to relief could be held in your body. There's no question that our minds and bodies are connected, but did you know that our bodies have a direct connection to our spirit as well? In fact, some have said that the body is actually the soul's subconscious. On today's show, we aim to answer burning questions like how exactly is it that our bodies can affect our minds, and our minds affect our bodies….which ultimately end up affecting our soul...and we provide some tips to help you fix those challenges you're experiencing, once and for all!We learn:1. How stress and worry can cause physical pain without any detectable medical issues. 2. How movement and posture can be used to relax and reduce pain. 3. How to transition from fight-or-flight mode to relaxation mode through mindful techniques and awareness. And a whole lot more! "When you have stress, I mean, there's hormonal changes, there's gut issues. But one of the least talked about areas is how your body physically changes in response to whatever stress or you have, whether it's mental, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and the body starts to change physically. So it's more than saying, hey, Will, you need to relax, chill, man. You can't just do that to someone and expect them to know how to do that." – Dr. Amy Novotny Dr Amy Novotny learned that physical and mental stress can lead to physical changes in the body, and that the muscles can contract without our awareness. She works with clients to help them understand how to relax and how to position their body to reduce pain. She also encourages them to stabilize their new relaxed position to become comfortable with it so that the muscles don't revert back to the old habits. Through her teachings, her clients learn how to reduce pain and create a new, relaxed positions for their bodies. Dr. Amy Novotny is the founder of the PABR Institute, an organization dedicated to providing naturalistic treatments for pain, stress, and anxiety relief. With 13 years of experience treating a wide range of patient populations in various settings, she has helped countless people reduce and even eliminate pain, stress, anxiety, orthopedic surgeries, sleep issues, and the need for medications. I pause a lot more. And I would say that my ability to respond has been less bit based on fear, and more based on solutions. So I'm not so emotionally reactive, because I'm more mindful. Thoughts on Breathing When you breathe, you want to be able to feel your breastbone, melt in as you exhale, and feel your belly spill out. When you do that, it will help bring all of your attention to your body. Therefore you can feel everything relaxed, allowing you to be mindful of the present. Suggested Resources Book: Don't Quit: Stories of Persistence, Courage, and Faith Book: Success Habits of Super Achievers App: Calm App: Headspace Bullying Story I was bullied as a child, I was somewhat popular during some times of my life, and other times I wasn't. And so I've been on the receiving end of being bullied and it's a hard thing to go through. I think when it comes to mindfulness regarding that when you're on the receiving end, it's hard to do anything other than to be in a freeze-mode or think how do I run away? And in terms of the person who's doing the bullying, I think there needs to be some awareness that that person is hurting somehow. They're lacking attention so they're seeking attention. They're seeking to assert themselves, because somehow, they're not getting that attention, or they're getting bullied themselves at home. I think we need to look around us and say, How are our own interactions affecting others? So many times, we may be using our words that really create some hurt and other people, and then they go to someone else. And they might bully that person just to be able to feel some type of satisfaction for the hurt feelings from a different interaction. Only nine percent choose raising children. Dr. Amy Novotny hated running. Until she didn't! After developing a love for the marathon, she discovered her love for the trails. She has since run 40+ marathons, an Ironman, and 10 ultramarathons (two 100 milers). She is the founder of the PABR institute where she helps people as a breathing and pain specialist. We had a great conversation about the nervous system and how calming or resetting it can provide many benefits to runners and people in general. Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/amyn
