In the spirit of Duchamp, we here at BYWAP are here to stand behind a simple truth: we don’t believe in art. We believe in artists! The horrors of War and Economic strife brought us Dada, and Dada gave us weird contemporary art that requires an arts history degree to decipher. Nothing is perfect, all systems are flawed, but we’ve got all these Ready-Mades ready for mass distribution and we hope you’re ready for the CHAOS. Find out the crazy sh*t that Duchamp came up with to promote as art, criticize the nature of 20th century politics and art styles, contextualize the development of Dadaism (and its subsequent decline), and be glad that we live in a time where we don’t have to watch the news argue over if a urinal is considered Art or not. Welcome to Spooky Season! As we reflect on how time and life changes, we must also stop and think about the power of cultural exchange. Arts and culture doesn't operate in a vacuum, and different influences can radically transform different mediums. However, today's subject is unique. For the Edo (Tokugawa) period, Japan was characterized by economic growth, strict social order, isolationist foreign policy... and a wildly popular enjoyments of the arts. Ukiyo-e, then, represents the final phase of a long development of Japanese culture operating in total isolation from the rest of the world. And after two centuries of operating in a vacuum came to a dramatic close with the reopening of Japan in July 1853, the whole world changed. Also: watch the history of Japan for an excellent breakdown of Japanese history! Find out where the concept of 'japonisme' came from; learn how ukiyo-e developed over the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries; admire the cut-throat nature of Edo-period art markets; and, contemplate how art has the potential to transform the whole world. Or, as our audio wizard, Julieta, puts it: Can We Offer You A Crash Course On Art in This Trying Time? Clickbait titles aside, today's episode dives into a topic so painfully overlooked by the art world. Have you ever been overwhelmed being in a gallery that you know nothing about the artist? Have you ever just been lost for words? Does talking about art make you uncomfortable? Just because you like art doesn't mean you know how to TALK about art. Over our many years deeply rooted to the art world, your favorite hosts have some tips and tricks to help you get through any museum or gallery that you find yourselves in. Remember, at the end of the day, there is no wrong way to talk about art. You belong in front of the piece—take your time with it! Find out our recap of visual literacy, gain some tools to help you be comfortable in front of art, how Elene responds to mispronunciations of her name, and why the persistence of institutions believing everyone should be an Art Historian to enjoy an art museum hurts everyone. This week we're popping popcorn, bringing out our art law textbooks, and righting some of the wrongs of the Nazis. Tonight's Movie Night is the 2015 Historical Drama of "The Woman in Gold". Based off the incredible true story of one family's fight to reclaim stolen art, this movie centers itself around Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I"—or, "The Woman in Gold". This Helen Mirren/Ryan Reynolds film manages to make a six year legal battle seem interesting! Join us as we look at the over-the-top nature of the painting, pine to visit Austria, critique Hollywood's penchant for stretching the truth for a Good Story(tm), and discuss how the nature of restitution is not only in the returning of taken objects... But also in the acceptance that harm has been inflicted, and responsibility must be taken. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Donate. Sign petitions. Support Black owned businesses. From Munch to Van Gogh, Goya to Kusama—the connection between mental illness and creativity has been a talking point of many art critics and art journals for centuries. However, the extent of that same illness being translated into museum spaces is a relatively new concept, with many museums opting to overlook (or outright deny) the impact of these diseases on artists. Join us as we read Elene's fantastic MuseumNext article, and dive into these deep and murky waters. Find out how different museums have used mental illness as conversation points, examine three different case studies of representation in exhibitions, and how representation offers more inclusive conversations to be had about such a largely overlooked topic—reducing stigma in the process! The most rewarding part of Art History is the look on someone's face when you inform them that these Renaissance Masters are actually catty drama queens—it tends to be a mix of surprise, joy, and horror. Vasari had his favorites, and so do we. Let's kick off our Renaissance Masters series with our boy: Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni. There's no earthly way of knowing which direction your memories are going. And while this may not be Willy Wonka's tunnel to hell, the fluid and ever changing imagery of a river that cannot be pinned down or dominated is evocative of the nature of memories. Memory is what we make of it, and this week’s guest—Dzebo, our dear Georgian Cultural Memory Studies major—helps us get to the bottom of the tricky nature of Cultural and Collective Memory. Find out how obsessed Steph has been over the Animal Crossing bandwagon, the long-term effects of nationalistic propaganda, how different 'memories' can resonate in a society, the way that different perspectives can cohabitate without disrupting globalism, and why we can't possibly be dancer. A BYWAP First: An Architecture Episode! In today's episode, we finally talk about one of the most captivating buildings in the world: the Hagia Sophia. The church, then basilica, then mosque, then museum, and now mosque again has been continuing the ebb and flow of lived history. In today's episode, we tackle the long standing history of this magnificent monument and how it's being impacted in 2020. Sometimes we lay in bed and we, too, dream about painting a Vermeer. And after Tim’s experiment here—maybe we can! It’s movie night in the BYWAP Camp and today’s episode is all about Tim’s Vermeer (2014). This man is the embodiment of Skill Share (and googling your way through a comprehensive liberal arts degree), and we stan. Is it cheating to use technology in art? Does the quality of work diminish if you 'copy'? Join us as we indulge in wholesome art content, speculate the artistic talents of Johannes Vermeer, and yell about 17th century artist politics. Why Repatriate, you may ask? Well... How do African masks and Totem Poles in museums make you feel? Do you wonder how they got there? Would you return stolen goods, even if you think you would do a better job taking care of it? This week’s guest is literal backbone of the show: Lindsey Anton-Wood, a Canadian studies researcher and our fabulous graphics designer. Today she helps us further last week's discussion of why (stolen) cultural objects find themselves under constant controversy. Find out why "to the victor, goes the spoils" paved the way for the looting of Black and Indigenous cultural heritage, the arguments some people have as to why objects shouldn't be returned, and how some museums are combatting Colonialism from their collections. Happy July! Stay inside! Stay safe! Come sit around the academic campfire of our hearts, and join us in our article discussion of "The Trouble with (The Term) Art" by author Carolyn Dean. We love her, we love this article, we need more discussions on how to classify art. Can we talk about Art without talking about colonialism? What is Art by Intention or Art by Appropriation? Do we put too much value into our ability to define things art Art? What does that mean for us? This article broke us in many ways, but let's get into it. Find out if, like artists, podcasts are more valuable when they die; if you can pin art down long enough to give it a title; if Elene is technically European or not; and, how much art historians refuse to acknowledge the elephant in our disciplinary living room! There's a lot of white in nature. It's just a thing, a color, the by-product of calcium. But alas, it just also had to be associated with Ancient Rome and purity, and we've never recovered. Join us on a picnic: no clothes required! As we celebrate double digits on podcast episodes, we look at another sort of progenitor. Avant-garde artist Édouard Manet (not Monet, but he’s in here too) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Impressionist movement, but is that really true? This week’s episode analyzes the life & times of the artsy bourgeois, makes a hundred different references to how little French critics liked Manet’s work, and takes a sabbatical to Spain to talk about light subjects... Boy, oh, boy—does this get heated! How's April treating, y'all? Good? Bad? Are you tired? Please drink more water, you deserve it. Today's episode looks at Richard Sandell's (2003) "Museums and the combating of social inequality: roles, responsibilities, resistance" article. Find out how passionate your hosts are about the current state of museum affairs, our anime-filled pandemic plans, #MuseumsAreNotNeutral, the WILD notion that "art for art's sake" is a good enough museum/gallery model, and why we used Sandell's writing in both of our thesis'. This episode, in our ongoing series tracking the impact of COVID-19 on the art community, I talk to the Hyperallergic news team (Jasmine Weber, Valentina Di Liscia, and Hakim Bishara) about the latest Pandemic-related news, including why museums can't dip into their endowments as easily as we might like, the Guggenheim's decision to furlough 92 employees, why some union supporters are crying foul with the recent art world layoffs. We also discuss the impact of the cancellation of Indian Market in Santa Fe, an artist fundraiser for Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, how artists are helping to decorate hospitals, and even some memes.A special thanks to Nathan Fox for letting us use his track “I Can’t Hang.” To learn more, check out his Facebook page. And a thank you to Gina Volpe for allowing us to use a short clip of her catchy song "Don't Touch Your Face," and for answering my questions about her inspiration.Subscribe to Hyperallergic’s Podcast on iTunes, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts.

As we find ourselves in a new kind of current events storm, we're joined today by Silvija Burbaitė, who gives us an insight into one museum worker's perspective of museum work, international travel, and the Los Angeles Lockdown situation. Things may have changed dramatically in the span of a week, but we do our best to bemoan the current state of Museum Affairs while also offering small, cultural reprieves to fill quiet panic over these upcoming months. Also featured is some wholesome friendship, COVID-19 discussions, bad jokes, #yolo mentions, and the hangups of virtual tours. Things have changed, but we're changing with it. Stay Safe. The CDC said “Don’t touch your face.” and I couldn’t stop thinking and thinking : “If I can’t touch my face, is it because Coronavirus is in the air? Is it currently on my face? I lay with my face on the bed, so is it on my bedsheets too?... ” As if that was not enough stress, I came to realize something: I touch my face a lot. Now, with this paper, I hope to get some clarity because singing myself out of touching my face is not helping anymore. - Let’s discuss- Did your face get super itchy all of the sudden now that you are not supposed to touch it? This week, Ryan and Dustin, go a whole week without touching their face... or at least they try to. The only March Madness that's not getting canceled this month is the final part of our series! Today finishes our discussion of Linda Nochlin's (1971) "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" article. While we were hoping that between the parts we could resolve this whole debacle, we will just have to see if Part 2 solves it! Find out how we're planning to change the world with clout, how essential the fundamental access to education and training could make or break an artist's career, and how quick we are to aggressively callout the "Gal Pals" narrative on old-timey lesbians. And in case you're wondering: the "Genius" still does not exist. Stay Safe. Don't Touch Your Face. Wash Your Hands. Help BYWAP grow by spreading the word! You can find us on Twitter and Instagram. Oh hello, SaysWhovia. We were just bleaching everything. Sit down here, on this nice clean seat. We boiled it.Yes, you know what we’re talking about—the coronavirus. It’s the most popular microbe around. We don’t want to freak anyone out, except maybe the entire Trump administration who do not seem to be aware that it is happening. Which is why they all went to CPAC and coughed all over each other and now the most hilarious quarantine of all time is happening. Imagine not being able to touch Ted Cruz for fourteen days. Great, isn’t it?Of course, there is still an election, which means that two shoe sisters are at odds with one another. Whose balls are lower? Stretchier? How can we find out?In any case, everything is safe here in SaysWhovia. We’ve never touched Ted Cruz.
With the continued information about the coronavirus coming in almost by the minute, two things have remained consistent...wash your hands long enough to sing the ABC song AND don't touch your face! But for most, simply telling one to not touch their face leads to more face touching, oftentimes significantly more than they would have had they never been instructed to not touch their face in the first place! Why is it so hard to stop touching our faces...no touchy!!! In this episode, Tony tackles the reasons why thought suppression not only doesn't work, but it actually makes the situation worse! Tony references the NBC News article, "Try not to touch your face. Also, try not to think about touching your face." by Kalhan Rosenblatt https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/try-not-touch-your-face-also-try-not-think-about-n1150161 as well as the Psychology Today article "Don't Think About It: Thought Suppression Causes Behavior Rebound" by Ira Hyman Ph.D. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mental-mishaps/201009/dont-think-about-it-Tony's new best selling book "He's a Porn Addict...Now What? The book debuted in the number 1 spot in the Sexual Health Recovery category and remains there as the time of this record. The book has received numerous positive reviews from professionals in the mental health and recovery fields.-The book tackles tough questions with answers from both the expert and the addict's point of view. Tony, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and creator of The Path Back, an online pornography addiction recovery program that has helped hundreds of people overcome turning to pornography and other compulsive sexual behaviors as a coping mechanism, and Joshua Shea, former addict, and author of the book “The Addiction Nobody Will Talk About” read their respective answers to questions such as "Finding out he's addicted to porn has turned me off to sex completely, what should I do?" And "How much do we tell the kids?" And "Does this mean that God is mad at me, or doesn't love me?"-Reviews include: "This is the most helpful book for porn addicts and the people who (still) love them. One of the most courageous and timely books to help with a widespread and almost never talked about epidemic that is ruining marriages, careers, and lives. It will give hope to millions of people who are addicted to pornography. -- Mark Goulston, MD, FAPA, Author of Just Listen Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone.-You can learn more about Tony's pornography recovery program The Path Back by visiting http://pathbackrecovery.com And visit http://tonyoverbay.com and sign up to receive updates on upcoming programs, and podcasts.-The Virtual Couch is sponsored by http://Betterhelp.com/virtualcouch Betterhelp.com is the world's leading provider of online therapy.
