With massive amounts of controversy, the Kansas City Chiefs advance to the Super Bowl. As did the Philadelphia Eagles. The halls of science, known for prim propriety and careful debate, are feuding. A new theory of gravity challenges Einstein's general relativity, our current understanding of that thing that keeps our feet on the ground. Physicists are upset. "Cotton gravity"—named in honor of mathematician Émile Cotton, not fluffy flora—was first posited by Japanese researcher Junpei Harada in 2021. The idea, which modifies general relativity and discounts the theory of dark matter, spurred a surprisingly catty argument on arXiv.org, an open-access website for scientific preprints. Things got nerdy. And hilarious. Endless Thread explains. ===== Credits: This episode was written and produced by Dean Russell. Mix and sound design by Emily Jankowski. The hosts are Ben Brock Johnson and Dean Russell.

In a quiet move behind without the approval of Congress or the American people, President Biden signed Executive Order 14067. Four young children were found living in a Boston Housing Authority-run (BHA) apartment filled with drag queens, “alcohol, drugs, sex toys, and a dead man,” according to reports. On Wednesday's edition of CBS's “America Decides,” CBS News Senior White House and Political Correspondent Ed O'Keefe said that there is still an issue with President Joe Biden's grandchild fathered by Hunter Biden “that the Biden family hasn't recognized and has yet to be settled as well.” But President Biden probably won't say anything more about the issue “until he's cornered by a reporter on it at some point, again, if at all.” Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, two of the world's leading tech billionaires, recently engaged in a humorous social media exchange about a potential cage fight. Zuckerberg has been training in mixed martial arts for some time now, it is unclear if Musk has any combat experience whatsoever. When Musk proposed a match, Zuck responded, “Send me location.” Bitwise Industries, the Fresno-based real estate and tech company that financially imploded a few weeks ago, is facing a number of lawsuits directed against the company itself and former co-CEOs Jake Soberal and Irma Olguin. When the historian who spent his whole career studying the life and exploits of Sir Francis Drake was presented with what appeared to be the Englishman's most important relic, he should have thought it too good to be true. Instead, he bought into it with his whole heart and career. A nerdy band of history buffs believed they pulled off the greatest of pranks, but the historian's reputation and sway were too strong to be brought down by a phony artifact. Too bad for one of the pranksters, who had counted on the whole affair as a means to exact revenge. This is how one fake metal plate became part of the California educational curriculum. We're back and we brought our healing sticks. Nerds are at each other's throats again. Why? Because the following questions are rippling through the nerdisphere turning brother against brother and that means we gotta set the record straight on questions like: Which Tom Hanks movie should be used for the next big comic book movie hit? Who's more likely to have a rude raunchy quilt? Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel? Which biopic do we deserve- Weezer or Limp Bizkit? We also solve some age old wrestling questions and dip our toes into a cinematic 'dogs'. ARE YOU NOT HEALED? Join with your fellow tittens to talk and chat on discord by joining our patreon. You’ll never guess who won our nerdy little bracket! Music: Art Brut, “Fight!”
While walking around the lavish rooms of the former ShowBoat casino, Nick and Ramon engage con goers in a challenge of wit and resolve to see who would win in a fight between a Swarm of Ninja Killer Bees Vs The Terminator, Backstreet Boys vs a Jaegar Powered by a killer whale, The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch vs The might of the Counter Terrorist Unit, and a special final battle between your host. You be the Judge in NERD FIGHT!
We begin with M*A*S*H (1970) - the movie that started a TV show that lasted longer than the Korean war it portrays at a time when America needed an outlet for Vietnam angst. Machismo overcomes emasculation in Westworld (1973) with gritty gunslingers and sex robots. The paramilitary police surveillance state is closer than we think in Blue Thunder (1983) but let's turn it into a weekly fluffy police drama. Based on a true story (not), Fargo (1996) divides us with its ineptitude noir and the banality of evil. Also: Joe tries to bond with #PERL the cat - literally. Laugh track vs. no laugh track. Dee shits on Joe’s facts. We uncover the earliest use of the word “fuck” in cinema. Robots? No! Rbts! RBTS! Dee isn’t impressed by a rubber snake. JAFO, FNG, and REMF explained. Mario Machado! Yah. Yaaaaaah. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. (Go Bears). Dee hates on Minnesota nice. We play a game of “... the TV show!” and Nerd Fight this week is movies that should be turned into TV shows.
First up is Peter Lorre’s only directorial stint with Der Verlorene (1951) known as The Lost One in English, although Joe couldn’t find it with subtitles and doesn’t speak German. The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Charles Laughton turns out to be one of our season highlights and we tread carefully not to spoil it. Walter Murch moves from the editing suite to behind the camera with Return to Oz (1985), including stand-out performances from Fairuza Balk and a talking chicken. It turns out Quick Change (1990), directed by Bill Murray and Howard Franklin, isn’t as good as Joe remembers and his predictions of being disappointed from last week come to pass. Also: #PERL the cat sticks the landing when ejected from the recording table. Never trust a Bond villain. Kids can be so cruel. Dee still hates E.T.. We’re definitely not in Kansas; the tax breaks in 1980’s England are much better. Joe springs a trap before Dee is ready for him. Dee asks: is this racist or a caricature? We play a game of “Directorial Debuts”. Nerd Fight is more of a Nerd Cuddle regarding the best Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
We kick off with a 3 hour fan edit of Dune (1984) and barely make it through unscathed - but we did it so you wouldn’t have to. Joe watches the original cut of Johnny Mnemonic (1995), Dee watches the Japanese cut and we compare and contrast them with the William Gibson short story. We stand in defence of John Carter (2012) as the source material originated a lot of what we consider sci fi tropes today. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) has wonderful galaxy-building but thin plotting and really should have been called Valérian and Laureline. Also: #PERL the cat does some free ASMR. Is Jürgen Prochnow Joe’s dad? Dee can’t pronounce Kwisatz Haderach. Captain Picard plays the space mandolin. We ask where our testicles are, Summer. Dee checks Traci Lords’ age again. Joe is clearly jealous of naked James Purefoy. We try and encourage #PERL the cat to dispense pearls. Multipass! We play a game of “Factions”. Nerd Fight this week is about gun fetishism in movies.
We start with the original mass-market platformer Super Mario Bros. (1993) and discover that updating kids’ stories for teens and adults doesn’t always work, especially when you’re competing with the summer of Jurassic Park. Then we have Biggles-in-space with the retro-futurism of Wing Commander (1999) including what might be the first example of a major motion picture using flow-mo. We still try to extract the good from it though. Dee risks minor detours with Doom (2005) and Max Payne (2008). The emotional dynamic at the heart of Need For Speed (2014) is more gripping than the supercar races. Last movie this week is Hitman: Agent 47 (2015), a film with no plot, a female MacGuffin and a lot of recycled tropes and yet we like it.Also: Joe starts with cookie mouth. We discuss how not enough problems are solved with plumbing. The origins of post-credits stingers. Our regard for Tchéky Karyo and Jürgen Prochnow gets a shot in the arm. We both fall for Aaron Paul. We’re open to sponsorship from PlayStation and XBox. We play a game of “Coin-Op Cameos”. Joe asks what games should become movies or TV shows. Nerd Fight this week is the Most 80’s Track From A Film.
