After a week off due to a family meal, The Ledge is back this week with the first part of the May new release series. And what a show to kick off the month. A good portion of the show consists of submissions from bands (Numb Surprise, Ricky Rochelle, etc.) and labels (Big Stir Records, I-94 Recordings, Spaghetty Town Records, etc.) that regularly support the show. Also included is a couple of great tunes from the ripping new album from Minneapolis’ Fret Rattles! But there are also a number of new records that I’ve been pumped to hear for quite some time. The second album by The Sleeveens proves that their debut was no fluke. The new White Fence album is a power pop surprise. Drakulas make a triumphant return. Mike Wiebe is a musician, actor, and stand-up comedian from Texas. Originally from Denton, he now lives in Austin. Wiebe is the lead singer of several nationally known Austin-based bands including Drakulas, High Tension Wires, and his most longstanding group, Riverboat Gamblers, with whom he has released six albums since 1997. Wiebe is known for a high-energy performance style which has led to frequent accidental self-injury, which, in turn, has fed back into his iconic status in Texas punk rock. He suffered a collapsed lung after a crowd-surfing accident in 2016. He once accidentally broke a gas main while swinging from the rafters of a club in Denton, Texas, filling the room with flammable gas. Since 2013, his work has also turned increasingly toward comedy, including two works released by Grammy-winning comedy label Stand Up! Records. Mike Wiebe is really one of the coolest people I know, a true artist. I can't believe we're pals. Mūsdienās daudzi cilvēki dzer „Illy” kafiju, un daudzi itāļi apgalvo, ka espresso ir daļa no viņu nacionālā mantojuma. Taču tikai daži zina, ka Frančesko Illijs, automātiskā tvaika espresso kafijas automāta radītājs, ir dzimis Rumānijas pilsētā Timišoarā. Pēc tam viņš pārcēlās uz Itāliju, kur atvēra savu biznesu – pasaulē pazīstamo kafijas grauzdēšanas uzņēmumu „Illy Caffe”. Vēl par izgudrojumiem runājot, arī pirmais reaktīvais dzinējs, ko izgudroja Anrī Koanda, nāk no Rumānijās, jo Anrī Koanda bija rumāņu aerodinamikas pionieris un inženieris. 1910. gadā viņš izstrādāja eksperimentālu lidmašīnu, kas izmantoja pasaulē pirmo reaktīvo dzinēju. Otrā pasaules kara laikā ir bijuši daudzi dažādi izgudrotāji, kuri centās pilnveidot Anrī Koandas izgudrotā reaktīvo dzinēja sākotnējo modeli. Tomēr, pateicoties Koandas izgudrojumiem un atklājumiem, lidošana mūsdienās ir iespējama. Runājot par Rumāniju, ir jāsāk ar tās vēsturi un Transilvānijas reģiona nozīmi. Daudziem būs zināms, ka Drakulas tēla radīšanu ir iedvesmojušas tādas vēsturiskas personas kā Valahijas princis Vlads Tepešs jeb Vlads Dūrējs vai grāfiene Elizabete Batorija, kura gājusi asiņu vannās, lai ilgāk saglabātu skaistumu un jaunību. Tas notika vēl pirms Rumānijas valsts atzīšanas 1878. gadā. Pirmajā pasaules karā tā pievienojās sabiedrotajiem un pēc kara beigām saņēma papildus teritorijas, tostarp slaveno Transilvāniju. Otrā pasaules kara laikā savukārt Rumānija karoja Vācijas pusē un piedalījās arī uzbrukumā PSRS. Pēckara padomju okupācija noveda pie komunistiskās "tautas republikas" izveidošanas 1947. gadā un karaļa atteikšanās no troņa. Rumānijai bija divi Komunistiskās partijas un faktiskie valsts vadītāji. Un par otru noteikti nedrīkst aizmirst, jo viņš minams starp rumāņiem tik tradicionālajiem nežēlīgajiem tirāniem. Runa, protams, ka ir par Nikolaju Čaušesku un viņa valdīšanu no 1965. līdz 1989. gadam. Režīms kļuva bēdīgi slavens ar drošības policijas veiktajām represijām, ar megalomāniskiem centieniem pārbūvēt galvaspilsētu Bukaresti un prezidenta pils izbūvi. Ar centieniem atdot visu valsts parādu Starptautiskajam Valūtas fondam, pat, ja tas nozīmēja faktisku iedzīvotāju dzīves līmeņa pasliktināšanos. Beidzās Čaušesku valdīšana ar viņa un viņa sievas publisku nošaušanu tiešraidē Rumānijas nacionālajā televīzijā pēc tam, kad abi bija notiesāti par ekonomisko sabotāžu un genocīdu. Runājot par modernās Rumānijas vēsturi, noteikti ir jārunā par romu/ čigānu minoritāti un rumāņu attiecībām ar tiem. Jāsāk būtu ar to, ka romi no valsts kopējoā iedzīvotāju skaita veido tikai 3 procentus. Otra lielākā minoritāte ir ungāri, kas ir divreiz lielāka.  Un tas ir no valstī kopumā dzīvojošajiem vairāk nekā 21 miljona iedzīvotāju. Pamatiedzīvotāji valstī ir vairāk nekā 80 procenti rumāņu valodā runājoši pareizticīgie. Stāstot  par rumāņu un romu attiecībām, nevar nerunāt par pastāvošo verdzību. Rumānijas Firstistes (Moldova un Valahija) lielāko daļu savas vēstures bija vienīgā teritorija Austrumeiropā un Centrāleiropā, kur tika pieņemti tiesību akti romu verdzībai, un vieta, kur tā tika paplašināta. Romi tika uzskatīti par īpašnieka privātīpašumu, kam bija tiesības vergu nodarbināt, pārdot vai apmainīt pret dažādām precēm. Īpašniekam arī bija tiesības vajadzības gadījumā piemērot fiziskus sodus, taču nebija tiesību atņemt dzīvību. Pat pareizticīgo baznīca turēja romus kā vergus, un tā neapstrīdēja verdzības institūciju. Tomēr garīdznieku vidū bija dažas balsis, kas iestājās par verdzības atcelšanu un mēģināja ierobežot īpašnieku vardarbību pret romiem. Otrā Pasaules kara laikā Hitlera vadībā romu tauta tika pasludināta par “rasu valsts ienaidniekiem”. Tādējādi, viņi tika ierindoti vienā kategorijā ar ebrejiem. 1942. gadā Rumānijas valdība deportēja uz Piedņestru, mūsdienu Moldovas Republiku,  vairāk nekā 25 tūkstošu romu. Mūsdienās romi ir integrēti Rumānijas sabiedrībā. Tomēr, ņemot vērā viņu pagātni un to, ka lielākā daļa no viņiem joprojām cīnās ar aizspriedumiem, romiem ir grūti pārvarēt nabadzību. Tādēļ lielākā romu turpina dzīvot kopienās un pieder pie savām ciltīm, saglabājot tradicionālās aktivitātes. Neskatoties uz to, ka Rumānijā pastāv daudz sociālās iekļaušanas projektu, ko izstrādājušas Rumānijas iestādes, NVO un Eiropas Savienība, situācija mainās ļoti lēni. Runājot par Rumānijas ekonomiku, jāmin, ka pāreja no komunisma sākās 1989. gadā, bet faktiski pāreja uz brīvā tirgus ekonomiku sākās ar jauno konstitūciju 1991. gadā, kam sekoja dalība NATO 2004. gadā un dalība Eiropas Savienībā 2007. gadā. Rumānija ir starp līderiem ārvalstu tiešajām investīcijām Centrāleiropā un Austrumeiropā: akumulētais ārvalstu tiešo investīciju apjoms valstī ir vairāk nekā 150 miljardi eiro. Pamata Rumānijas eksporta preces ir transportlīdzekļi, ķīmiskās preces, elektroniskie izstrādājumi, farmācija, transporta aprīkojums, metāli, pārtikas produkti, kā arī gumija un plastmasa. Starp citu, Rumānija ir lielākais elektronikas ražotājs Centrāleiropā un Austrumeiropā. Pēdējo 20 gadu laikā Rumānija ir kļuvusi arī par nozīmīgu mobilo tehnoloģiju, informācijas drošības un saistītās aparatūras izpētes centru. Valsts ir reģionālā līdere tādās jomās kā IT un mehānisko transportlīdzekļu ražošana. Rumānijas IKP uz vienu iedzīvotāju pēc pirktspējas paritātes pēc Pasaules Bankas datiem 2020. gadā bija apmēram tas pats, varbūt pat nedaudz lielāks par Latvijas 29 tūkstošiem eiro.  Galvenās problēmas arī līdzīgas mūsējām – iedzīvotāju novecošana, kvalificēta darbaspēka emigrācija, ievērojama izvairīšanās no nodokļu maksāšanas, korupcija, nepietiekama veselības aprūpe, kas apdraud Rumānijas ilgtermiņa izaugsmi un ekonomisko stabilitāti un ir galvenās ekonomikas ievainojamības. Atšķirībā no Latvijas, Rumānijas ceļš uz iekļaušanos Eiropas Savienības kodolā ir bijis daudz lēnāks un ērkšķaināks. Valsts vēl joprojām nav ne Šengenas zonas, ne eirozonas dalībvalsts. Abos integrācijas procesos gan valsts cītīgi gatavojas iekļauties tuvākajos gados. Kā uz to raugās Rumānijas sabiedrība, skaidro Mihais Sebe, Rumānijas Eiropas Institūta pētnieks. Secinot – Rumānijas ceļš uz ekonomisko labklājību ir bijis izaicinājumu pilns. Un dalība Eiropas Savienībā valstij ir devusi iespējas piesaistīt ārvalstu investīcijas un augt.
