We're back with another episode of Car School Confessions, and yes… we're talking driving test waiting times again. Come on, DVSA—sort it out!Kate puts Francis and Vicky to the test with a quick fire game—who's taking the crown this time?Plus, we dive into more of your confessions, uncovering some truly wild driving instructor habits.Join us for laughs, relatable rants, and a reminder that, hey, we're all a bit rubbish sometimes!
In our first ever live podcast (streamed on Facebook for members), we dive into practical strategies for driving instructors to take control of what they can—and thrive despite DVSA test‑booking challenges. Plus, Diana shares two “Digs Deeper” coaching moments, and we explore clever learner‑driven terminology for blockers, hazards, and reflection over perfection.0:00 – Welcome & Live Format- Introduction to the live‑recorded video cast for members - How to watch future live recordings on Facebook (membership required) 3:15 – Workshop Announcement - Date & Time: Sunday 20 July, 9:30 – ~16:30 - Location: Walsall - Cost: £120 per person, group discounts available - Focus: client‑centred learning, CPD for driving instructors7:00 – Phil's thoughts: “Control the Controllables” 1. The DVSA Waiting‑List Problem - Five‑plus‑month waits, scarcity of cancellations - Common reaction: moaning on Facebook—unhelpful 2. Taking Action for Change - Write to your MP and the DVSA (mobilise your pupils to write, too) - Drip‑feeding pressure at scale can move ministers 3. Working the System Today - Hire a test‑finder or virtual assistant and charge a small management fee - Pre‑book tests early (e.g. on theory‑pass day), then adjust as needed - Build in “re‑assessment” checkpoints two months out 4. Maximizing Learner Hours - Encourage private practice between lessons - Consider mini‑intensives if finances/time allow 5. Pricing & Service Models - Offer “test‑management” as a premium add‑on 25:00 – Diana's “Digs Deeper” Coaching Moments 1. Reframing “Blockers” → “Gap‑Makers”** - Instead of calling oncoming vehicles “blockers,” ask learners what they'd name them - Shift from negative framing (“blockers”) to positive (“gap‑makers”) 2. Perfection vs. Reflection - Encourage “reflection, not perfection” as a mantra for analysis 3. Mini‑Roundabout Design Exercise - Role‑play as the “traffic‑flow engineer” to explore pros/cons of signals vs. roundabouts - Pitch solutions to “road‑safety teams” and “road‑users” to deepen conceptual grasp - Follow up with real‑world practice, then debrief on muscle‑memory vs. theory 38:30 – Learner‑Driven Terminology - **Hazard Traffic‑Light Game:** - **Green hazards:** unlikely to affect your path - **Amber hazards:** may require slowing or manoeuvring - **Red hazards:** will definitely require action (stop, change lane) - Origin: inspired by Hazard Perception Test colour cues 42:00 – Handling Second‑Guessing on Test Day - Is doubt a sign they really “owned” the learning? - Build true understanding, not rote responses - Use controlled “wrong‑way” practice (with safety caveats) to reinforce correct choices - Wean off instructor “micro‑affirmations” (mhm/mhmm) so learners trust their own judgment -

Lee and Mick from Knowledgeablee Instructor Training (K.I.T.) joined me to elaborate on their submission to the DVSA regarding the restoration of the Part 3 and Standards Check to the full pre-Covid 60 minutes. How aware are you of the DVSA's document the National Standard For Driver and Rider Training? In particular:Element 6.3.1: Create a climate that promotes learningElement 6.3.2 Explain and demonstrate skills and techniquesElement 6.3.3 CoachThey reason that it is very difficult - if not impossible - for the DVSA examiners to assess all of these elements adequately within 40 minutes. Yet these are the very criteria that the DVSA wants us to work to achieve! As with any test-based assessment, people will generally 'teach to the test'. So where is the opportunity for developing the deeper coaching questions, integrating elements of the GDE Matrix and generally exploring beliefs, opinions, fears and anything else that is clearly related to driving behaviour when the examiners are tapping you on the shoulder and asking you to get the car moving again when you stop for a couple of minutes to help your learner reflect on their performance?Lee and Mick are NOT arguing for the return of the 10 minute briefing at the start of the Part 3 or Standards Check! They are looking to improve the quality of how we help learners become better, thinking, responsible drivers and, hence, improve road safety. Rather than me try and explain what they are asking for - inadequately - listen to what they have to say. Hopefully you will agree with them. If you do please add your weight to their submission and write to Loveday Ryder. To find out more about all the courses and videos Lee and Mick have on offer visit their website - www.adikit.co.uk

The Government has now published its findings and response to last year's consultation and call for evidence on the MOT, looking at the frequency of the test and what amendments and updates the DVSA could make to the test to bring into line with current passenger vehicle landscape. But whilst the Government is focussing on the cars and technology of the future, are they forgetting what makes the MOT work in the first place? Namely the thousands of MOT testers themselves, many of whom often feel frustrated that their experiences and opinions are being ignored. In this episode, you'll hear from Protech Academy's Leigh Marsden and Kallum Dorman about the issues surrounding training and assessment, as well as the debates surrounding the maximum fee and a lack of face-to-face contact with the DVSA. Also, Hayley Pells from the IMI discusses the role the Government plays in the MOT and what the IMI is doing to ensure independent workshops are being heard.

In this episode, we chat to Mary, who decided to take partial retirement after a fulfilling career in the DVSA. She was a civil servant for almost 30 years and while she loves her job, it's clear she's having the time of her life in retirement so far. Mary tells us about her initial decision to leave work behind for good, but a chance-encounter with a colleague made her re-evaluate and opt for partial retirement instead. It's given her the right work/life balance as she eases herself towards her post-work years. Keeping one foot in the ‘work door' meant she could continue doing what she loved, whilst having more time to do things she enjoys outside of work – such as travelling, spending time with her family and meeting new people. Splitting her time between the UK and Turkey, she talks about the importance of having a good pension behind you to support the lifestyle you want after you leave work. She also shares advice for those approaching retirement or considering partial retirement. Mary tells us about her life after taking a step back from work, whilst continuing to do a job she loves on her own terms. She talks about splitting her time between the UK and Turkey, the support she's received from her family and her partner's concerns when it came to leaving work behind for good. In this episode Adam Chudley, Director of B K Moving & Storage Group discusses how he got involved within the industry about 20 years ago, although he feels he was born into the industry as he is the son of Mark Chudley (episode 23 (https://www.movingmatterspodcast.co.uk/23)) and grandson of Derek Blatchford. B K Moving & Storage Group are based in Exeter and trade under the names of Blatchford's International, King & Kearey and Westcountry Removals. Blatchford's was started by Adam's great grandfather Walter Blatchford in the 1930's, making Adam a fourth-generation remover! B K Moving offer local and national removals, some commercial and specialise in International, but not so much European due to changes in recent years. They have a 13,000 sqft containerised warehouse, and currently run 3 trucks and 1 van, employ 5 with a crew of 3. Adam's challenges have been related to family businesses, starting with working within the family business (Chudley Moving & Shipping), then leaving the industry for a few years in an emergency, which was unplanned and happened overnight, to help with another family business, and finally returning to the industry in his current role within another family business. Adam doesn't believe in changes from his past, but more what lessons has he learned, ‘bend from the knees' being one! However, Adam is sad that his time out of the industry coincided with Mark's (Dad) BAR Presidency. Adam's personal highpoint of being within the industry was his last BAR Conference in Bournemouth, which not only did he attend with his father and grandfather, but also gave a presentation on the BAR Young Movers Group, which he was involved in at the time. After hearing several previous podcast episodes regarding regulating the 3.5 tonne brigade, Adam would controversially not like to have additional regulation in place but would rather push DVSA to use the laws already in place. However, he would like to change the key handover and the way the industry is treated by the Estate Agent/Solicitor, and encourages every mover to not only have a strict waiting time charge policy but to enforce it too. The advice Adam would give himself (or gave himself recently) just starting out within the industry again is to network – as an industry we are very friendly and are prepared to share a lot of information. In the next 5 years Adam will transition more into working on his own as David (Adam's business partner) will be looking at retirement. Industry wise, Adam doesn't see any huge changes, apart from truck and van technology that will be enforced upon us, but he does believe we have an interesting couple of years ahead due to the current economic climate. Adam's current situation does allow him to have a good work/life balance, so, outside of the industry he is a football fan (a season ticket holder at Bristol City FC), enjoys family time with his wife and 2 daughters and has a passion for the theatre and amateur dramatics. And as always we end Moving Matters with a funny moving story, regarding a previous podcast guest, Mr Neil Purdie (episode 47 (https://www.movingmatterspodcast.co.uk/47)) himself. Enjoy! What do you think? My initial reaction was that it would harm the caravan industry as it creates a barrier to entry, but then I wondered if the tuition would make consumers better equipped - and safer on the roads. This is the link to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) survey asking for your thoughts on trailer training and towing safely: https://lnkd.in/eDUCnUjGCONTACT john@rawlingscommunications.comInstagram: @rawlings_commsLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-rawlings-communications-consultant/

In this world of mokuhanga, there are artists whose passion and dedication to the art form comes not only from their work, but from how they see the medium itself. Linda J Beeman is a Michigan based mokuhanga printmaker who desires to explore nature, its conservation, its power through colour, its meaning, and aesthetic. Linda's work takes the viewer to an existing place, which when allowed in, soothes and calms, enveloped by the sacred. On this episode of The Unfinished Print I speak with Linda J. Beeman about her world, natural and artistic, how she got involved with mokuhanga, how she views her audience, her style. We discuss her time at MI Lab, and her love of artist-in-residence programs in the United States. Linda also speak on her process, her tools, and why mokuhanga is such a big part of her life. Focusing on the foreign demand for “traditional” Japanese imagery and motifs such as castles, bridges, famous landscapes, bamboo forests, to name just a few. Shin hanga was born in 1915 by Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962) when he found Austrian artist Frtiz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned Capelari to design some prints for Watanabe's feldgling printing house . From there shin-hanga evolved into its own distinct “new” style of Japanese woodblock printing. It lasted as this distinct style until its innevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers beginning to move away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints. Watanabe Shōzaburō [渡辺 庄三郎] (1885-1962) - was the catalyst of the new print movement (shin-hanga) in the Japan of the early 20th Century. He assembled printers, designers, and carvers to re-create the now dead, ukiyo-e style, of woodblock prints in Japan. Watanabe also welcomed "foreign" artists to design prints, such as Charles Bartlett (1860-1940). His relationship with many of Japan's future woodblock stars, such as Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950), and Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) established a mokuhanga style that has been emulated ever since. **TW: This episode contains content about domestic violence and sexual assault** In this episode, Shireen Ahmed, Brenda Elsey and Jessica Luther start the show with their most memorable first day of school moments. For the main topic, they discuss how Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse (DVSA) reports are handled (and ignored) in sports. They talk about the various actions and in-actions taken by professional leagues and individual organizations to address DVSA reports, which has oftentimes protected the abusers. They also discuss the challenges journalists face in properly reporting on DVSA in sport and getting these stories published in the mainstream media. Following this discussion is a tease of Shireen's interview with Kelly Lindsey, former coach of the Afghanistan Women's National Football Team, on how soccer was used in recent weeks to get Afghan athletes to safety. Next, they burn more sports garbage in the Burn Pile. Then, they celebrate those shining light, including Torchbearers of the Week, the Canada National Women's Hockey Team who won Gold at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship! With a dramatic overtime goal by Marie-Philip Poulin, Canada beat Team USA 3-2. Lastly, they wrap up the show with what's good in their lives and they they're watching this week.
