Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI), and executive produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (Oscar-winning SUMMER OF SOUL), Tariq Trotter (DESCENDANT), and produced by RadicalMedia , THE LEAGUE celebrates the dynamic journey of Negro League baseball's triumphs and challenges through the first half of the twentieth century. The story is told through previously unearthed archival footage and never-before-seen interviews with legendary players like Satchel Paige and Buck O'Neil – whose early careers paved the way for the Jackie Robinson era – as well as celebrated Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron who started out in the Negro Leagues. From entrepreneurial titans Cumberland Posey and Gus Greenlee, whose intense rivalry fueled the rise of two of the best baseball teams ever to play the game, to Effa Manley, the activist owner of the Newark Eagles and the only woman ever admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, THE LEAGUE explores Black baseball as an economic and social pillar of Black communities and a stage for some of the greatest athletes to ever play the game, while also examining the unintended consequences of integration. Director Sam Pollard (Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power, Citizen Ashe, Tiger) joins us for a conversation on the multi-layered history of the Black ballplayer's quest for inclusion, compensation and respect. The story begins in 1890's Jim Crow laws forcing out the few Black players already playing with white players in the nascent professional leagues and culminates with the signing of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers and soon after Larry Dolby to a contract with the American League's Cleveland Indians.

“A League of Their Own” is a fictional account of a real moment in history when WWII prompted major league baseball to start a new professional league with women, called the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The 1992 film follows The Rockford Peaches, the most successful team in the league, during their first season. Catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and her little sister, pitcher Kit Keller (Lori Petty), have a classic sibling rivalry rooted in a love of competition and a well of insecurity. Kit has always envied Dottie's talent and beauty, feeling resentful of how easily good things seem to come her way. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell play Mae Mordabito and Doris Murphy, two friends who are honestly kind of forgettable because their roles are underwritten. Mae is a center fielder who used to be a dancer in a club and enjoys gentleman attention. Doris plays third base and … is kind of loud, I guess? Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh) is the “ugly” second base woman who can hit like a motherfucker. Another casting highlight is Tom Hanks as the drunk, washed up former baseball player-turned-manager, Jimmy Dugan. The plot loosely builds to the final World Series Game between the Rockford Peaches and the Racine Belles and then time jumps to the present day, when these women are being honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode: Interview with Penny Marshall and Lori Petty Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna on "Arsenio Jams" Marjorie Magazine article about Black women and the AAGPBL Britni de la Cretaz's piece in "Narratively" about the hidden queer history of "A League of Their Own" If you are in Michigan, please make sure you sign the Reproductive Freedom for All petition, sponsored by the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. You can find a location to sign the petition (it must be done in person) here. "A League of Their Own" is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and can be rented from all of the standard places. At one point, I think I mention the Rockford Peaches being "inducted" into the Baseball League of Hall of Fame. What I really mean to say is that they were honored with an exhibit. Thus far, Effa Manley is the only woman who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

There have been very few women to own a Major League Baseball franchise. The most notable, Marge Schott, owned the CIncinnati Reds from 1984 to 1999. Before her came Helene Hathaway Robison Britton who inherited the the St. Louis Cardinals. After Britton came Joan Payson, the first owner of the New York Mets and the first woman to own an MLB franchise without inheriting it. But, there was another. Effa Manley owned the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League from 1936 thru 1948. A woman in a man's world, the Eagles were one of the cornerstones of the Negro Leagues along with teams such as the Homestead Grays, Pittsburgh Crawfords and Kansas City Monarchs. And, while Manley ran a tight ship and was one of the more vocal owners in the Negro Leagues, it was what she did away from the game that truly separated her from her fellow owners. An activist always fighting for minority rights, she made a difference not just on the baseball diamond, but away from it too. And, much to the surprise of many, her background just might lead one to ponder why she did what she did. So, who was Effa Manley and what was her background? On this episode of SFH, author James Overmyer joins me for a fascinating conversation about the first woman to be inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. She received that honor in 2006, long after she passed. Overmyer who recently released a book on Manley's life, "Queen of the Negro Leagues," published by Rowman & Littlefield, uncovered so much about Manley's life and shares much of it with me from her unique upbringing to how she fought for the rights of African-Americans to how she became owner of one of the Negro League's legendary teams to her fight to integrate Major League Baseball. Check out this episode of SFH now for the story of one of baseball's extraordinary personalities and pioneers.

Episode 101 is overloaded with incredible guests and wonderful discussions.MLB at Field of Dreams Game was a huge success and we were fortunate to speak with three extremely dedicated baseball fans who made the trek to Dyersville, Iowa to witness this highly anticipated game.  Join us as we welcome previous show guest, Brian LoPinto, as well as first timers to the show, Dan Malley and Aaron Nelsen.  They give us their first-hand impressions and experiences.  Find out what it was like to be at the game, the types of food served, and even how much these three fans paid for this unique experience which all of them said was well worth it. Andrea Williams admits that prior to getting a job in marketing and development at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri she knew nothing regarding Effa Manley, the subject of her wonderful book, Baseball's Leading Lady:  Effa Manley and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues.  However, once she heard about this wonderful woman who is the only woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, she knew she needed to learn more and her many hours of research and writing are her gift to us.  Effa ran the Newark Eagles with her husband, Abe Manley, from 1935 to 1948.  Andrea provides us with a look at the life of someone who was not about to let skin color or gender stop her from doing what she wanted to do and helping those she needed to help.  Effa Manley's story inspired Andrea, and the stories in this book will hopefully inspire you as much they did us.Joey Machado is excellent at marketing and that excellence is being felt throughout the barbecue community.  His passion for the products he represents has always shone through and that continues as he works with Blues Hog BBQ and Gateway Drum Smokers.  He is extremely entertaining and frankly did not even need us to ask him more than one question as he has a lot to say, and we are the beneficiaries as we get to learn from someone who has been a blessing for the barbecue industry.  Enjoy part one and look forward to part two.We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show - (516) 855-8214Facebook - baseball and bbqEmail - baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter - @baseballandbbqInstagram - baseballandbarbecueYouTube - baseball and bbqWebsite - https://baseballandbbq.weebly.com

On today's episode, Curtis talks to Dr. Leslie Heaphy, who teaches sports history at Kent State University and has contributed to several books, including The Encyclopedia of Women in Baseball. Their topic today is the history of women in baseball, specifically Black baseball. The conversation starts with a broad history of women in the game, as spectators, reporters, and players, before moving on to the Negro Leagues, where Dr. Heaphy talks about some of the women who played the game, owned the teams, and helped run the leagues. They touch on Effa Manley, who is currently the only woman in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and discuss the difficulties of researching this topic. You can read Dr. Heaphy's piece on women in Black baseball on Baseball Reference: https://www.baseball-reference.com/articles/women-in-the-negro-leagues-leslie-heaphy.shtml Also, congratulations to DOCTOR Curtis Harris on successfully defending his dissertation this week!

Author and journalist Andrea Williams, whose new middle-grade nonfiction book is Baseball's Leading Lady: Effa Manley and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues (Roaring Brook Press).  In our conversation, Andrea Williams and I discussed a moment in history when Effa Manley spoke up at a meeting. Not only did she speak up, but she suggested that if the store she’d organized a boycott of didn’t start to employ African Americans, those potential employees would be forced to "work as prostitutes." It was a bold move, speaking in such a way at that time, and it worked. This week’s Write the Book Prompt is to write about a time that you took a chance to better a situation, putting yourself at risk for a good cause. This could be a situation that arose at work, or it could be about that time you convinced your Mom that your brother really had not been the one to break a vase by throwing a baseball in the house. Give yourself over to that memory and write. Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion. Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

The prerequisite vibe check blends into a conversation about the parallels between today and some of the book’s themes. Andrea also reflects on the fact she’s publishing a book during a pandemic. 7:50-24:55: What caused Andrea to take an interest in baseball in the first place? After name dropping Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye, a confession arises from the rubble of Kansas City fandom. To kick off the deeper Effa Manley conversation, a brief primer is required. Not only does Andrea explain who Effa was and what she did, but also the layers of Black baseball that enrich her greater story. Branch Rickey, catch this fade. Just because Harrison Ford played you in a movie doesn’t automatically mean you get off scot-free. 25:00-37:30: What did Andrea think about the way things unfolded this summer, as she began promoting a book about Effa Manley and the Negro Leagues as America started paying more attention to race relations? It turns out, writing a book is very hard. What are some things that need to happen moving forward to ensure that progress doesn’t stall out? Andrea shares her promise of becoming “obsessed” with Effa and how much knowledge she had before putting pen to paper. This portion of the show also includes an examination of Jackie Robinson under a different lens.  38:30-1:03:53: The logos and graphic design of the Negro Leagues were cool as hell. Andrea details the perspective of her writing for this book, what she hopes to accomplish with it, and how seeking information from the correct sources is the most important part of learning. Baseball historian Bob Luke (The Most Famous Woman in Baseball: Effa Manley and the Negro Leagues) joins host Tim Hanlon to delve into the intriguing story of the first (and still only) woman to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame – and the second Negro National League’s Newark Eagles franchise she successfully co-owned (with husband Abe) and general managed from 1936-48.   A student of the sport since early childhood with a keen sense of promotion, marketing and player welfare, Manley blended a strong baseball operations IQ with a savvy aptitude for local politics and African-American community issues to become a dominant front office force in the Negro Leagues, and a persistent champion of player integration that ultimately transformed the white-male-dominated National and American “major” leagues in the late 1940s.  Manley’s Eagles teams consistently performed well on the field and at the gate, and her deft management style culminated in a Negro World Series championship for the Eagles in 1946, and fueled the careers of no less than six eventual baseball Hall of Famers (Larry Doby, Ray Dandridge, Leon Day, Monte Irvin, Biz Mackey, and Willie Wells), as well as dozens of other players who soon found their way into the majors after the demise of the team and the Negro Leagues in the early 1950s.    Manley, herself, gained Hall of Fame induction in 2006 – albeit posthumously – alongside a number of her fellow Negro League pioneers. On this week's 51%, the author of a book about baseball's leading lady hopes girls read the story. In her new book, Baseball's Leading Lady: Effa Manley and the Rise and Fall of the Negro Leagues, Andrea Williams tells the story of the woman at the center of the Black baseball world. Manley was the elegant yet gutsy owner and co-manager of the Newark Eagles - a team she cultivated into a powerhouse. Yet with calls for integration gaining steam, so did the threat of losing all that she had built. Williams details the rise and fall of Negro Leagues Baseball, shedding light on an important yet little-known part of Black and American history. And now Dr. Jeri Burns talks turkey. Dr. Jeri Burns is a storyteller, writer, and educator living in New York's Hudson Valley. You can find her at storycrafters.com. That's our show for this week.
