David Bronner & Gero Leson are todays guests on the Podcast. They are the unique trailblazers and (r)evolutionaries behind the ethical and regenerative brand that Dr.Bronner's has become over the last decades. David grew the company from $4 million in 1998 to over $129 million in annual revenue in 2019. From a hister of over 150 years of family soap-making history: Dr. Bronner’s began in the U.S. in 1948; founder Emanuel Bronner’s German-Jewish family began making soap in 1858. Gero who is Vice President of Special Operations at Dr. Bronner’s just published a new book: Honour thy label (March 2021) We talked about: Not just making soap, but trailblazing conscious and regenerative business impacting social, environmental and regenerative well-being: The difference of organic by neglect and expanding the global agriculture into Regenerative Organic Agriculture. Recently launched ROC certification, that Dr. Bronners spearheaded with other ethical brands such as Patagonia. It’s really a standard that mandates what you should be doing in your farm, not just choosing better “than no pesticides” but going deep into Focus on the education of farmers in these communities, to develop practices such as composting, cover cropping, mulching, and other regenerative organic methods that build up soil fertility and organic matter. Gero shared some stories about soil making and management from Canada, to Sri Lanka, Palestine, Ghana, Germany and many other countries on the planet. How Gero & David met through their love and knowledge around Hemp and the diverse soil and crop approach. David shared insights into the Cannabis market, and why Organic Cannabis doesn’t (yet) exist in the legalized US market. Check out his consumer facing standard SUN and EARTH on that note. And of course their 7 generational dream for the planet, our species and the soil. Emanuel Bronner was born in Germany and escaped to America during the Nazi regime. Stricken with personal loss, he decided to bring peace into the world and started making soap and grew the company to more than $100 million. Let us see how he did it.
So David Bronner’s not your average soap company CEO and today on the show we talk everything from Hemp legalisation to regenerative Ag, from LSD, to Burning Man to soap making - it’s a big interview indeed. David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America and producer of a range of organic body care and food products. He is a grandson of company founder, Emanuel Bronner, and a fifth-generation soapmaker. Under David and his brother Michael’s leadership, the brand has grown from $4 million in 1998 to over $111 million in annual revenue in 2017. David and Michael established Dr. Bronner’s as a sustainable leader in the natural products industry by becoming one of the first body care brands to formulate with hemp seed oil in 1999 and to certify its soaps, lotions, balms, and other personal care products under the USDA National Organic Program in 2003. Both actions resulted in high-profile litigation with government agencies, DEA and USDA respectively, that Dr. Bronner’s ultimately won, cementing Dr. Bronner’s activist orientation in the natural products marketplace. Over the years, David and Dr. Bronner’s have been key leaders in fights for GMO labeling, industrial hemp farming in the U.S., high-bar organic and fair trade standards, cannabis reform, and a fair minimum wage. Today, David is helping to lead the effort to establish the Regenerative Organic Certified standard, dedicating time and resources to creating an integrated, comprehensive program that addresses soil health, animal welfare, and fair labor practices to advance sustainable and ecological alternatives to industrial agriculture. In addition to his support of advocacy for regenerative organic agriculture, David directs Dr. Bronner’s resources to support animal advocacy, wage equality, and drug policy reform. One of his passions is the responsible integration of cannabis and psychedelic medicine into American and global culture and he is a board member of the Multi-Disciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies. His activism embodies the company’s mission — which encompasses a commitment to making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and to dedicating profits to help make a better world. I hope you enjoy deep-diving into the mind of one of the world’s most purpose-driven CEO’s. You can find extra resources and this week’s sponsor offer over on the show notes at lowtoxlife.com/podcast

“We’re systematically destroying the life in soil and bringing our crops to harvest with more and more chemical inputs and treating soil like dead dirt instead of the life-giving resource that it is.“David BronnerEat local. Buy organic. Avoid GMO. Give back. Be of service. These are all great practices. Good for your health. Good for humanity. And good for the planet. But it's not enough. The health and environmental problems we currently face are global epidemics of unprecedented scope and scale. We simply cannot solve these issues with the mindset that created them. What we need, now more than ever, is a revolution of consciousness. There are few people more well suited for this conversation than David Bronner. By far the most unique ‘CEO' I have ever met, this week's guest is the Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America and producer of a range of organic body care and food products. The Dr. Bronner story, which is amazing, begins in 1948 with Emanuel Bronner — a German immigrant, third-generation master soapmaker, master consciousness and generally far out dude — who used his ecological soaps to proselytize his “All One” philosophy, labeling product bottles with the key tenets of his teachings on self-realization and unity across religious and ethnic divides. Embraced by 1960's counterculture for its ecological properties and spiritual sensibility, the brand soon found it's way into most natural foods markets across the United States.David and his brother Michael eventually took stewardship of the family business, shepherding their grandfather's brand from counterculture cult status to mainstream embrace by growing revenues from $4 million in 1998 to over $111 million in 2017.Along the way, David went to great lengths to respect, protect and ultimately deepen Emanuel's vision, cultivating a thriving and truly conscious capitalistic enterprise making socially & environmentally responsible products while successfully pursuing its broader mission to create a better world for ourselves and future generations.Environmental activist. Psychonaut. Visionary. These are but a few of the words that describe David, a man who very much shares his grandfather's ‘cosmic hippie’ DNA but matches it with entrepreneurial flair, a degree from Harvard and the business savvy necessary to grow and sustain an ongoing concern at scale.Under David's stewardship, Dr. Bronner's has championed a number of causes, many of which provide the foundation for today's conversation — a free range exchange that explores David's involvement in advancing animal rights, drug policy reform, GMO regulation, regenerative organic agricultural practices, fair trade projects and practices, medicinal applications for cannabis and psychedelics, as well as wage equality, including self-imposed caps on executive pay.Backing up its mission statement, roughly a third of Dr. Bronner's profits are dedicated to charitable giving and activist causes annually. Furthermore, the company is a founding partner in the Climate Collaborative, which leverages the power of the Natural Products Industry to compel action on climate change. This is David's story. And it's sure to blow your mind.Disclaimer #1: David expounds upon his personal experience with with psychedelics and cannabis in the context of spiritual growth. With a background in psychiatric medicine, neurology, advanced ayahuasca dietas, psychedelic integration, and neurocognitive restoration, Dr. Dan Engle is one of the most unique and important voices in the psychedelic movement today. As founder of Full Spectrum Medicine and author of the new book The Concussion Repair Manual, Dr. Dan brings together a deep understanding of both the medical world and the psychedelic experience with an eye toward therapeutic personal transformation. Psychedelic Times founder Joe Mattia spoke with Dr. Dan recently at a mutual friend’s float studio, and their conversation ranges from Dan’s fascinating personal story of ayahuasca dietas in the jungle to his return to the Western world to advance the cause of integrative, soul-centered healing. Sponsors: Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third- generation master soapmaker. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honors its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially & environmentally responsible products, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world. The Temple of the Way of Light is an ayahuasca center in Peru that opened in 2007. Their team of indigenous Shipibo healers represents over 250 years of experience practicing the ancient art of ayahuasca shamanism. The healers are supported by highly trained and experienced Western facilitators, who act as a critical cultural bridge between the healers and guests. The Temple was founded on the philosophy that an atmosphere of genuine care and compassion provides the optimum conditions for healing. But then I realized that if I was to be of support and a positive impact to the greatest degree that I could be, then it was probably not going to be just hanging out solo in the jungle. It was going to be coming back to potentially be a voice to bridge the psychedelic medicine community with the psychiatric medical community. If we do choose to see the right place that psychedelic medicines have in the unfolding potential of health care moving forward, then it’s helpful to have people who can speak from both perspectives.” On jungle medicine: “When we know that the pharmacy of the entire jungle itself, and the river system itself, with the soil and the animals and the plants and the fish and everything is this buffet of potential options for someone’s healing protocol, then all of these things are used synergistically.” On Deanne Adamson’s program Being True to You: “The program that Deanne has created with Being True to You does turn the whole addiction frame on its head. It encourages a shift from the victim role into an empowerment role. To be able to say “Ok, this experience that I’m going through is my journey towards personal development and towards a more whole, integrated self.” Some people choose the doorway of depression, some people choose the doorway of chronic anxiety, some people choose the doorway of chronic pain… we all have our own hero’s journey that we’re going through. And it is a liberating frame to be able to try on… all of a sudden, now it puts us in the driver’s seat.”
From his early days of college activism, to decades of ecological stewardship, to Buddhism and then to psychedelics, Allan Badiner has had a colorful and impactful life. In our latest Psychedelic Times Podcast, Allan speaks with Joe Mattia about his unconventional introduction to psychedelics, his awakening in a Buddhist monastery, and many other fascinating stories and insights. Usually it's the other way around for people.” On his first stay at a Buddhist monastery: “So I went to a monastery in Sri Lanka in the mountains and I hated it; it was awful. It was just unbearable. The bed was basically a board and a thin blanket and there were bugs everywhere… I thought if I could just run out of here I would, but you had to book a week in advance to have a car come get you… About a day or so before I was supposed to be done there, I had an unbelievable experience. I just woke up to being different in so many ways. I looked at the dirt and I thought that’s not nothing, that’s Earth. The bugs were my friends. I felt this connection with them because they were alive. I woke up to no pain- all my joints had been bothering me before that. It was painless, and beyond that it was joyful, and I felt a connection and a profound sense of gratitude and joy to be alive. Everywhere I looked I was in awe. It was this amazing consciousness rebirth of some kind.” On Terence McKenna giving him psilocybin: “Terence [McKenna] did effectively treat me with psilocybin. That really came close to the Sri Lanka experience; it’s the closest I’ve been. It was my first psychedelic experience, and it came right at a time where I met Sasha Shulgin and would go to his Friday night dinners.” On connecting with Nature and activism: “One of the insights from the Sri Lanka experience was a connection to Nature, a connection to other beings- animals, bugs even. I felt that there was a strong connection between my own bliss and the connection that I had with other living beings. So that motivated me to get involved as an activist in preserving the life-giving systems of the planet and other species. I took that very seriously… I got to know the people at Rainforest Action Network… and they invited me to come work for them. I did and joined their board, and I’ve been on their board ever since. It’s been really an important part of my life to have that work going on and keep me in awareness of connection with other beings.” On interviewing Buddhist teachers about psychedelics: “In preparing for this book that I decided to do on Buddhism and psychedelics called Zig Zag Zen, I interviewed just about every well known American-born teacher of Buddhism about their previous experience with psychedelics, if they had any… and all of them did! It was ubiquitous- from Jack Kornfield to Joseph Goldstein, all of these teachers had a psychedelic experience or several prior to becoming involved in Buddhism. Jack Kornfield, for instance, openly said that he wouldn't even be a Buddhist teacher if he had not taken LSD- he wouldn't have been able to understand what they call ‘against the grain ideas’ that challenge fundamental assumptions that we make in Western society.” Allan also shared a beautiful quote at the end of the podcast from Dr. Albert Hofmann, who discovered LSD: “Alienation from nature and the loss of the experience of being part of the living creation is the greatest tragedy of our materialistic era. It is the causative reason for ecological devastation and climate change. Therefore I attribute absolute highest importance to consciousness change. I regard psychedelics as catalyzers for this. They are tools which are guiding our perception toward other deeper areas of our human existence, so that we again become aware of our spiritual essence. Psychedelic experiences in a safe setting can help our consciousness open up to this sensation of connection and of being one with nature. LSD and related substances are not drugs in the usual sense, but are part of the sacred substances, which have been used for thousand of years in ritual settings. The classic psychedelics like LSD, Psilocybin and Mescaline are characterized by the fact that they are neither toxic nor addictive. It is my great concern to separate psychedelics from the ongoing debates about drugs, and to highlight the tremendous potential inherent to these substances for self-awareness, as an adjunct in therapy, and for fundamental research into the human mind. It is my wish that a modern Eleusis will emerge, in which seeking humans can learn to have transcendent experiences with sacred substances in a safe setting. I am convinced that these soul-opening, mind-revealing substances will find their appropriate place in our society and our culture.” -Dr. Albert Hoffman in 2007 (at age 101) Explore Links Related to this Podcast: Esalen institute Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics Rainforest Action Network CIIS Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Program International Cannabinoid Research Society Psychedelic Integration Workshop at Esalen
Episode 10: We’re All One or None! All One! With Dr. Bronner’s CEO David Bronner 150 years and 5 generations of family soapmaking Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner, a third- generation master soapmaker from a German-Jewish soapmaking family. He used the labels on his superb ecological soaps to spread his message that we must realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” Still family-owned and run, Dr. Bronner’s honors its founder’s vision by continuing to make socially & environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and by dedicating our profits to help make a better world. All-One! David Bronner is Cosmic Engagement Officer (CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, the top-selling brand of natural soaps in North America. He is a grandson of company founder, Emanuel Bronner, and a fifth-generation soapmaker. David and his brother Michael established Dr. Bronner’s as a trendsetter in the organic body care industry by becoming one of the first brands to certify its soaps, lotions and balms under the USDA National Organic Program in 2003 — marking the beginning of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps’ issue-oriented activism in the natural products marketplace. David made this possible and meaningful by implementing fair trade all over the earth, family farms, and co-ops. Because of David’s personal mission and efforts, today, Dr. Bronner’s coordinates certified Fair Trade projects for all major ingredients, including olive oil from the West Bank and Israel, coconut oil from Sri Lanka and Kenya, peppermint oil from India and palm oil from Ghana. David pioneered the use of 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) bottles for the liquid soaps, as well as a hemp and recycled paper blend to package the bar soaps. As the main facilitator of the Hemp Industries Association’s (HIA’s) successful multi-year litigation against the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), from 2001-2004, David played a crucial role in US farming of industrial hemp and defending sales of hemp foods and body care in the U.S. David is an active supporter of both the HIA and Vote Hemp. He is also a key leader in the fight to label GMO foods in the U.S. David dedicates time and resources to many different issues on behalf of the company’s mission — which encompasses commitments to making socially and environmentally responsible products of the highest quality, and to dedicating profits to help make a better world. Did you know that Dr. Bronner‘s knows how to heal the soil to heal the planet? This is a Company that selflessly truly lives by example! The most technically sophisticated form of agriculture, designed to solve our future food & climate challenge and the most ancient, wise, and timeless way of growing is Regenerative organic agriculture. Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, which bills itself as the top-selling natural soapmaker in North America, wasn't founded to sell soap. The company was started to promote a religious philosophy developed by Emanuel Bronner, a third-generation German Jewish soapmaker, who printed his message on the labels of his potent peppermint liquid soap. Successive generations of the Bronner family have used the label's message of a united humanity to guide the company, which spends much of its profits on charitable causes and is outspoken on issues like wage equality and fair trade. Today, even as the idea of a united humanity seems more distant than ever, Dr. Bronner's continues to spread its soap and message worldwide.
Everything you need to know about organic skincare and fair trade activism! Lisa Bronner, grand daughter of Dr. Bronner himself, shares with us her tips on picking the greenest, safest products for body and home, and tells us the unbelievable story of how Dr. Bronner’s became a household name. Whenever asked about what she does, the first thing Lisa says is “I’m a mom.” Her top priority is her family’s physical, emotional and mental well-being. She began her blog, Going Green with a Bronner Mom, to give other busy moms quick, easy, honest information about organic and natural products and help them make informed decisions about their and their children’s health. And she’s well placed to do so, as the grand daughter of the founder of a well loved green living brand, Dr. Bronner’s. Lisa’s advice on how to make your life greener is simple: the first step is to educate yourself. Take the matter into your own hands. Read labels – whether it’s food or a beauty product, see what’s there. Do you recognize the ingredients, or would you need a chemistry degree to make sense of it? Lisa recommends visiting the Environmental Working Group website, which rates products according to safety and has a breakdown of ingredients including their potential effects. But you don’t need to read the label if you’re buying a bottle of D.r Bronner’s soap, which contains only natural skin loving ingredients, and can be used for all kinds of cleaning tasks. The story of how Dr. Bronner’s was founded could be made into a film – Emanuel Bronner grew up in a German soap making family in early 1900’s. His philosophy, or Moral ABC, which focused around world peace, environment protection and the belief we are all one, caused his family to shun him, and compelled him to emigrate to the USA. There, he was wrongfully imprisoned in a mental institution for making impassioned speeches where he sought to promote the idea of an environmentally conscious, peaceful world. But he escaped and set up the Dr. Bronner’s that has now become a household name. His philosophy for this better world can still be found today, written on the soap bottle labels. Dr. Bronner was a true visionary and his passion for creating a more ethical world lives on through the “Fighting Soap Company,” as the family have lovingly nicknamed it. “It’s part company and part activism,” says Lisa, referring to the campaigns Dr. Bronner’s has fought over the years. Where her grandfather’s causes were fluoridation and world peace, now the company is active in raising awareness and creating positive change in the areas of GMO labelling, fairer trade and business practices, animal welfare and living wage reform. Click here to find out how Dr. Bronner’s is making life better for both communities and the environment in Sri Lanka and Guana. We wish there were more companies like this! Dr. Bronner’s story proves that you can do business well while being fair, ethical and responsible. You can read the full show notes and get access to all the resources at www.foodhealspodcast.com

On December 24, 2013, Christina Tobin interviewed David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a 100% organic & non-GMO company that makes the world's bestselling natural soaps, in addition to other products like coconut oil. David discusses the founding of Bronner's Soaps by his grandfather, Emanuel Bronner, and his story of escaping Nazi Germany. He discusses his grandfather's ultimate protest against the petro-chemical industry, using petroleum-based soaps and products, mixed in with many other harmful chemicals, and the impact it had not only on our bodies but our environment too. Dr. Bronner's Soaps is 100%-plant based. David Bronner has been key in getting the company certified organic, non-GMO, and Fair Trade. He even helped reform some of the many loopholes in the USDA Organic standards. Dr. Bronner's implemented the use of hemp seed oil in many of their products. He discusses his support of the legalization of cannabis and hemp, the importance of Fair Trade practices, the Fair Trade olive oil he gets from both Israel & Palestine, the need to realize the oneness of humanity in the face of a nuclear-armed world, the benefits of psychedelic medicine, his fight for GMO labeling in CA & WA (taking on the Goliath of Monsanto), leading by example using his company as a larger vehicle for good in the world, and the need for more choices in our electoral process so we can restore the free, peaceful, and harmonious society we all want.
