The Hudson's Bay Company had known about gold finds on the Fraser River since early in 1856, and they had kept word of this to themselves, quietly sending gold which had come in on trade to Fort Langley for safekeeping. However, when the company had amassed some 800 oz. of gold, they sent it to San Francisco to be refined, and the secret was out. Some 30,000 prospectors and entrepreneurs passed through Victoria and Fort Langley during the spring and summer of 1858. James Douglas had three major concerns. First, since most of the newcomers were American, he feared that they would make an attempt to take over the territory in the name of the U.S. Secondly, he worried that there was insufficient policing for the influx of people, some of whom were rather shady characters. The third problem was that Douglas' colonial government was virtually broke. A colonial Gold Escort was eventually formed for the sole purpose of carrying gold from the current diggings to government assay offices at New Westminster or Victoria. How do we open up doors and break down barriers for Indigenous peoples to get work? To get mentorship? And to be leaders in that sector? Darian Kovacs asks “what if we equipped Indigenous folx with the best education, the best resources, the best credentials, and let them loose into the world of marketing and advertising? And what if they happen to rise up as the leaders? Because they're incredibly brilliant people that are resilient, understanding, and empathetic of stories and storytelling because of the way they are brought up in their history. Darian Kovacs, seasoned podcast host of Marketing News Canada and founder of Jelly Marketing joins Susan Diaz and Rohini Mukherji. We tackle the phenomenon of the new found anxiety of someone who want to be an ally who is moving from a place of privilege to just becoming aware of the real state of things I- whether it was the George Floyd murder of last year or the unearthing of over 1000 children's graves, covered up in the Canadian residential school system. We touch on How to operationalize empathy How to get past the fear of doing the wrong things and paralysis by analysis that stops people from doing anything to help Some of the really practical pieces marketers struggle with - Darian talks of a tool like Canva which many digital marketers within amazing organizations use. If you look up the stock images and try to find Indigenous people you'll find very generalized/racialized images. When we come up against that, he suggests that we reach out to the platforms and get dialogue started on how it can change. (spoiler: they'll likely be open to it as Darian discovered) This episode is super fun; complete with Grey's Anatomy and Suits analogies and even examples of power sightings of Canadian political nerve centers (hint: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau were in Tofino, BC in early October 2021, catching a lot of bad press on the bad taste of taking a ‘luxury vacation in this time'. Darian channels some primo empathy in his approach to that narrative) About Darian Darian Kovacs is the Indigenous founder of Vancouver based SEO company Jelly Digital Marketing & PR and digital marketing course, Jelly Academy. Stage 4 cancer reared its ugly head last September as Chris and Missy learned that Chris’ cancer was back and had metastasized through his body. The filmmaking couple has struggled with the effects of the disease in more ways than they’d ever imagined as they dealt with the heartbreak of losing Chris’ younger brother, Brandon, just a few weeks ago. The couple has made it their mission to do everything in their power to keep Chris alive and create content to capture and share their journey along the way. They brought a camera and podcast setup along as they ventured out to an Integrative Health Clinic in Fort Langley, BC where they are seeking treatments that will give Chris some relief, and give the family hope. In their first podcast, Chris and Missy discuss what brought them here, their first week of experiences in Canada, memories of Brandon in his last days, and their hope for healing in seeking out integrative treatments in the naturopathic health scene.
Fort Langley is one of the (if not THE) oldest landmark in Metro Vancouver. The fort was built in 1827 as a trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company. Ever wondered how some churches finally get unstuck and build momentum for growth? Today's episode is a story of one of those churches. Living Waters Church in Fort Langley, BC was a great little community church a decade ago. But it wasn't growing. It wasn't reaching new people. When Doug and Linda Smith arrived, there were about 40-50 faithfully attending. 11 years later, they have two locations, four services, one church plant and over 800 in attendance. How did this happen? In today's episode, Doug Smith tries to shed light on the last decade of his leadership journey. Subscribe! It’s a month of big changes here at Fashionably Ate, and we’ve got an episode themed around one of them: Steph’s new workplace, Fort Langley, BC! We’ve used the Parks Canada Heritage Gourmet app (see the link below) to find a Fort-related recipe, to some surprising success, and Torey’s researching the iconic Hudson Bay blanket. Torey's obsessed with: Indigenous Walks in Ottawa, led by Jaime Koebel -- check out their Facebook page, Indigenous Walking Tours. Steph's obsessed with: the story of a fantastic female hiker in BC in the 1910s, showing up her fellow (male) hikers on an arduous mountain trail. Thanks for listening! Fashionably Ate is on Instagram and Facebook @fashionablyateshow, and we've got photos from this and every episode on Pinterest @fashionablyate.
