Last week, we celebrated Father's Day with a special conversation between Rob and his son, Tristan. This week, we're continuing that theme with a powerful discussion about what it means to show up for young people who need someone in their corner.Rob is joined by Corey McKinney, a speaker, mentor, author, and former foster parent whose life has been dedicated to helping young people navigate some of life's toughest challenges.Through his work with the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program and other youth-focused initiatives, Corey has spent more than three decades encouraging young people to overcome obstacles, believe in themselves, and build brighter futures. But some of his most meaningful lessons came through foster parenting. In his book Foster Dad, Corey shares the joys, challenges, heartbreaks, and unexpected rewards of opening your home to a child in need. More importantly, he shares what can happen when a young person experiences consistency, encouragement, and unconditional support. This is a conversation about mentorship, fatherhood, foster care, and the life-changing impact of simply being present.Conversation HighlightsWhat inspired Corey to become a foster parentThe experiences that led him to write Foster DadThe joys and challenges of opening your home to youth in foster careWhy attachment and connection are worth the riskThe importance of consistency and showing up for young peopleHow mentoring and foster parenting often intersectRemaining connected to former foster youth long after placement endsWhy positive adult relationships can change the trajectory of a young person's lifeAbout Corey McKinneyCorey McKinney is a professional speaker, mentor, author, and former foster parent dedicated to helping young people overcome gun violence, bullying, and peer pressure. A former Division I basketball player and longtime mentor with the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program, Corey has spent more than 35 years working with youth. He is the author of Coach Daryl's Colts and Foster Dad, inspired by his experiences as both a mentor and foster parent. Why This Episode MattersOne of the most common questions prospective foster parents ask is: "What if I get attached?"Corey's answer is simple: that's the point.Children and youth in foster care need adults who are willing to invest in them, encourage them, and remain present through both good and difficult moments. This conversation reminds us that foster parenting is not about being perfect. It's about being available. It's about showing up consistently and creating relationships that can last long after a placement ends.Whether you're a foster parent, mentor, coach, teacher, or simply someone who cares about young people, Corey's story demonstrates the profound difference one committed adult can make.

Tyler Daily wasn't planning on becoming a foster parent. But his work in education as a middle school teacher ended up becoming the gateway to foster care. Foster parents are so important in the foster care community, and single foster parents are an incredible group of people. There is no specific data on the number of single foster parents nationwide; however, the 2019 Child Welfare Outcomes report shows that single parents make up 29% of the adoptive family structure with just 3% of that number being single men. Parenting alone presents a lot of challenges that other foster parents may not encounter. As Tyler has fostered 7 children in the course of one year, he says, “It's a circus, but it's a fun circus!” I pray you are encouraged by his story and experience this week. He is a surviving street kid, foster dad to over 18 kids, single adoptive dad, an author, speaker, and advocate for children everywhere. Wow! Today's guest has such an inspirational story to share, and I strongly encourage you to read his book Now I Am Known. Peter Mutabazi is not only a published author but is also a foster dad and has a passion for foster care which is something that I am of course drawn to. Without giving too much away (because you really do need to read his book!), Peter reflects on his abusive, traumatic childhood and how he escaped it. He also explains what led him to where he is today, including how and why he decided to become a foster parent, and he gives advice to people who have considered becoming foster parents but are, for various reasons, afraid to pursue it. Peter wraps up by discussing forgiveness and moving on from trauma. He also reflects on how he reconciles all of the pain and brokenness in the world with the existence of God. I, again, cannot recommend his book enough! The Main Thing: If you look up "super dad" in the dictionary, you'll see Peter Mutabazi's name as part of the definition. We can assure you you've never heard a story like his (at least we hadn't!) and that he is one you'll never forget. For Episode 061 Peter joins us to share his personal story of becoming known and his life's mission to make the children in his home also known. Peter is actively stepping into the trenches with children who desperately need stability, love, and a place to call home. His desire to love, serve and equip them for as long as he can is such an encouragement to those also facing the challenges of the foster care system. Peter's story is the definition of "beauty in brokenness." We hope you're as touched as we were by this episode. Enjoy!Episode Resources: Peter wrote a book! On this episode of Our American Stories, in Kevin Samy's father's village in India, they actually had to call in a person from another village to teach their children to read. Their chalkboard was the dirt floor of the building they learned in. He'd eventually move to the United States and become an engineer. Kevin Samy shares his family's remarkable American dream story. Peter Mutabazi was born on the border of Uganda and Rwanda. He escaped an abusive father by running away to the capital of Uganda, Kampala, where he lived on the streets for 4 years and never slept more than 2 hours... until one day he met a stranger that would change his life forever. I am Peter Mutabazi. And this is my story. As a child in Uganda, I grew up with shelter, food and clothing scarcity. But more than that, I grew up with safety scarcity. I feared for my life from a father who threatened me, and frequently called me “garbage” and “useless.” Parents are supposed to protect their children. When my father didn't, I ran away from home to live on the streets in Kampala. Four years of doing whatever I needed to survive, a young couple: … saw me … heard me … told me I wasn't alone … and showed me that I mattered. They sent me to school. They put a roof over my head. They clothed me. And fed me three meals a day. And allowed me to be a child. So I could grow up to do the same for others. I decided to do for other children what this one couple did for me. Dr. John DeGarmo is an accomplished author, foster parent to over 60+ children throughout his time as a foster parent, and founder of the Foster Care Institute. I am certainly not an expert on the topic of foster care but John is passionate about his mission (he's coming on some podunk podcast in the hopes that maybe he will impact even just one more life!) but I enjoyed our conversation and tried to do my homework so that he could showcase his message on my show. I familiarized myself with some nomenclature that I explain in the monologue at the beginning of the episode such as respite care, CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and so on. It may be helpful for you to check out John's TED X talk before listening to this episode which you can check out in the link below: WATCH HIS TEDX PRESENTATION I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to help John spread his message and if you want to help make the foster care system better in your locale, please reach out to John or someone from his team to point you in the right direction.
