Scholars have emphasized that not every book of tafsir should be studied by beginners because some contain weak narrations, Isra'iliyyat reports, or unverified hadith.Understanding the Qur'an correctly requires relying on authentic sources and the methodology established by the early scholars of Islam.Islam encourages Muslims to seek knowledge but also warns against speaking about religion without proper understanding. Allah says:“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those one will be questioned.” (Qur'an 17:36 – Quran.com)This verse highlights the responsibility of Muslims to ensure that the knowledge they learn and share is authentic and verified.Scholars therefore emphasized studying tafsir through reliable sources and verified narrations.Some early books of tafsir included narrations known as Isra'iliyyat, which are stories transmitted from Jewish or earlier religious traditions about ancient prophets and nations.While some of these reports may contain historical elements, many of them cannot be verified. For this reason, scholars warned that students of knowledge must approach them with caution.Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence, and tell others the stories of Bani Israel (which have been taught to you), for it is not sinful to do so. Mike Pezzullo recently said that “the likelihood of conflict in this decade has been about 10 per cent, which is meaningful enough to plan for and indeed to be concerned about”. If Pezzullo's assessment is correct, that means there is a 90 per cent chance that conflict will not happen. What is Australia's plan for that (likely) scenario? This episode is about that 90% world, where Australia's relationship with China will still matter greatly, as Beijing's behaviour influences many of our interests, not just geopolitics and national security. How might Australia consider thinking about a cooperative agenda with the PRC? In the words of PM Albanese, his government's approach is to “co-operate with China where we can, disagree where we must and engage in our national interest”. Where can we cooperate, especially given the deep freeze in political relations that the two countries are only now climbing out of? What does engagement in the national interest mean given the extent to which China can affect many things we care about? Darren is joined in this conversation by Dr Paul Hubbard. Paul is trained as an economist, first joining the Australian Public Service in 2006, and was sent from there to the ANU as a Sir Roland Wilson PhD Scholar in 2014.  More recently, in his capacity as a National Government Fellow at the ANU, Paul led a small team to produce a report - "A Sustainable Economic Partnership for Australia and China" that was launched in May. The report proposes an agenda for how Canberra and Beijing can take their economic relationship forward, and the two discuss that in the context of the broader question of what it means to develop a cooperative agenda with China and how should we think about the constraints imposed by geopolitics on that work? Our guest today takes into the world of women and war in Habsburg Spain. Sandra Suárez García is a Margarita Salas Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Modern and American History at the University of Granada in Spain. She studied History as an undergraduate at the University of Santiago de Compostela before earning two MA degrees at the University of Granada. She earned her PhD in History and Arts at Granada with a dissertation titled "Aristocratic Property in the Kingdom of Granada (13th-16th centuries): The Vega and the Periurban Surroundings of the Capital." Her current project, "Women and War in Habsburg Spain (16th century): Theory, Law and Praxis," is part of the research project "Narrations, Discourses, and Management of Memory and the Past of Agents and Intermediaries in the Hispanic Monarchy" (Europeans always have such long titles for these big projects!). Sandra is also a member of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology Action working group titled “People in Motion: Entangled Histories of Displacement across the Mediterranean." She has published over a dozen articles in journals such as Historia Medieval and Medievalismo, and she has numerous articles currently under review in English and Spanish. She is fluent in four languages and reads a few more. She's participated in study programs in Germany, Italy, and Tunisia and was a visiting scholar at the University of Bologna (Italy). Join us for a delightful and interesting chat - we'll discuss women, war, and the historical record in the 16th century, reading about medicinal plants, pastel de natas, growing up in Germany then going to school in Spain.
