What is to come for a child who is told he is garbage? Worthless? Beaten to the ground? I have often said that children who have the love, kindness and acceptance of an adult—or several adults—can be the difference. As you might remember me saying, Search Institute found that many young people don't feel that they have at least 3 key adults to turn to in a time of need and challenge. Our next guest had a very hard start to his life—abused by his father and watching his mother and siblings meet that same fate. He survived the streets of Kampala Uganda and, due to the potential that someone saw in him- wound up going to school and altering his life for the better in every possible way. My next guest will help us to understand how to talk to kids about acceptance and true self-worth. He has a remarkable story. As you will have heard on many previous episodes of the podcast, with Marie Battiste, Carl Mika, Wakanyi Hoffman, Vanessa Andreotti and others, understanding the ways in which our colonial schooling systems have propogated one particular way of knowing our world, and excluded and often violently suppressed many others is something that I care deeply about. For me, it has to be a key part of any transformative work that we do to, with humility and curiosity, to reorient education systems. But in order to do this, we need people who are able to gather and convene the critical conversations that put these ways of knowing in dialogue with each other. It is therefore the greatest honour to have Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers joining me on the podcast this week. For her entire career Dr Hoppers has been at the forefront of facilitating these vital conversations. In post-Apartheid South Africa, she designed and enabled the process that led to the first national policy on the recognition, development and protection of indigenous knowledge systems. Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers is a scholar and policy specialist on International Development, education, North-South questions, disarmament, peace, and human security. She is a UNESCO expert in basic education, lifelong learning, information systems and on Science and Society; an expert in disarmament at the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs; an expert to the World Economic Forum on benefit sharing and value addition protocols; and the World Intellectual Property Organisation on traditional knowledge and community intellectual property rights. She got a Masters and PhD in International Education from Stockholm University, Sweden. In South Africa, Professor Hoppers was awarded Professor Extraordinarius in 2019 at University of South Africa (Pretoria). She held a South African Research Chair in Development Education at the University of South Africa (2008-2018). Prior to that, she was a technical adviser on Indigenous Knowledge Systems to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (South Africa) and led the Task Team to draft the national policy on Indigenous Knowledge Systems. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf, 2002), and was a member of the Academy of Science Special Panel on the Future of Humanities (South Africa). She was the Goodwill Ambassador for Makerere University in Kampala Uganda; and Ambassador for Non-Violence at the Durban Universities' International Centre for Non-Violence. In July 2015, she received the Nelson Mandela Distinguished Africanist Award from HE Thabo Mbeki for her pursuit of the total liberation for the African continent through the promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems of Education and in the same year, Prof Hoppers was awarded “Woman of the Year” by the University of South Africa, and was named as a “Leading Educationist” and was honoured in the Gallery of Leadership as the 63 most influential people who have shaped Unisa since its inception in 1873, in a permanent exhibition in Kgorong Building in UNISA. In 2017, Professor Hoppers received the distinction from UNESCO as an Honorary Fellow in Lifelong learning. She is the Founder and Director, Global Institute for Applied Governance in Science, Knowledge Systems and Innovations (https://www.giagsi-ug.org/the-faculty/). She held a Professorship in Education at Gulu University (Uganda) and is now the Canada Research Chair in Transdisciplinarity, Cognitive Justice and Education as part of the Pluralism Strategy Initiative at the University of Calgary (https://www.ucalgary.ca/pluralism/scholars-educators-researchers).She is the author of many important works including the book, Rethinking Thinking: Modernity's "other" and the Transformation of the University with the late Prof. Howard Richards.https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=qWEKG-QAAAAJ&hl=en

Hello to you listening in Kampala, Uganda!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. You might notice that I'll be dipping into the podcast archives to give you something to listen to this week. Why? Because on Friday the 1st of December I had to keep a promise to Gus the Good. Gus was the last of my 4 kitties, 3 of whom came with me to Whidbey Island and have gone on ahead over the Rainbow Bridge.Gus was a senior fellow. Been with me some 17 years or so since I brought him home from the no-kill pet shelter along with his sister, Kayak. Someone had dumped the litter in a bin outside a convenience store. He's weathered many changes: losing his mates, moving from household to household, now age and kidney disease.    The thing about Gus is that he took it all in stride. He asked for what he wanted when he wanted it. He snoozed in the sun of an afternoon. The morning was not complete until he got his brushing. I can tell you I've curried horses in less time! He figured out how to claim his spot on the bed and the pillow so I had to adjust to him. No matter my mood or attitude he was ready to hand out his personal brand of affection: face licking.I think the most common thought shared by all of us who have had to make the decision when to let our animal companions go to their final sleep is: I did it too soon or I did it too late. I hear you. My promise to Gus was that I'd walk him to the Rainbow Bridge a little early so that he would not have to suffer. Did I make the right choice? Here's what our compassionate Whidbey Island house calls vet said: “Better to go on a good day than a bad day.” It was a good day for keeping promises.  So I hope you understand if right now I don't have what it takes to create a week's worth of new episodes.Question: What have your animal companions taught you about life, love and loss? You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: What is your superpower?Emmanuel: My superpower is very, very simple. I said yes to that inner voice, to that inner calling, that I should go back and help my fellow friends. You won't believe this story. Keep reading anyway!Emmanuel Trinity, founder and CEO of era92 Creative, was living on the streets of the slums of Kampala as a teenager when a caring Christian woman asked what she could give him to enable him to get off the streets. He asked for a computer. Remarkably, she gave him one.He used it to teach himself to do graphic design and quickly became adept enough to get work. Six years later, he got a position with Coca-Cola in Kampala. Working for one of the world's largest companies with an extraordinary commitment to protecting and enhancing its brand was an opportunity he didn't want to leave. After just six months, he quit the job to find a way to help others like him find a path out of poverty as he had.He shares the story of launching the company with the first employee:The first one that I worked with was Megan. The way I met Megan is a very, very interesting story. This is when I had quit my job at Coca-Cola after six months, and everyone called me crazy. I went back to the slums. It was a Friday. There was a crusade at the church, and we had this overnight. This girl came to me. She was on the verge of selling her body. She had given up on life because her dad, who was taking care of six siblings, fell off a building and broke his spinal cord. Now, this girl was stuck with a bedridden, sick dad and also had to find food for the other five siblings. What happened to her in the community where she grew up? You know, lots of poverty, no hope. Everyone told her the only quick way to get $1 or $2 a day was to sell her body to provide for her family. This girl came to me to ask for advice. I told her, “You're in church. As Christians, we don't believe in that. I won't allow you to do that. But what we're going to do, please join me in this program I'm starting. I'm starting with three people. If you bring two other people, I'd love to work with you. I'd love to pay you for one or two months. If you get these things, I'll be able to get you a job.”I was just guessing; this was a guesswork. I hadn't really figured out this model.Megan accepted, and she brought two other friends. I brought one other friend of mine, and we started the class.Surprisingly, after four months with my guidance, this girl was able to design a website on her own. She was able to design a website in Drupal and WordPress, and I was like, “This is it.” Megan became my first employee.Today, era92 Creative employs 1,800 young people like Megan, plucked from poverty and given an opportunity to gain valuable skills and then put to work using them.Era92 Creative works primarily with US companies, typically on $2,000 monthly contracts, effectively providing them with an outsourced graphic design team.In this work, Emmanuel uses his superpower, an ability to say yes to his inner voice.AI Episode Summary* Emmanuel Trinity is the founder of era92 Creative, a social enterprise providing affordable graphic design services.* The company employs young people from slums in Uganda, giving them training in design and web development.* Era92 Creative serves clients in the United States, particularly small and medium-sized businesses and non-profits.* The company offers a suite of web development and design services at a flat rate price.* Emmanuel's inspiration came from his personal experience of being rescued from the streets and a desire to address youth unemployment in his community.* Through era92 Creative, Emmanuel has created 1,800 skilled jobs for young people.* The work of era92 Creative has transformed the lives of many individuals, including Megan, who went from being on the verge of selling her body to leading a department of designers.* Emmanuel's superpower is his ability to say yes to opportunities and act on his inner voice.* He believes that everyone has the potential to make positive changes in their communities and should act upon their inner calling.* Anyone interested in working with era92 Creative can visit their website (era92creative.com) to learn more about services and engagement options. How to Develop Acting on Your Inner Voice As a SuperpowerEmmanuel explained his willingness and ability to say yes to his inner voice, driven by his Christian faith:One of the things that hinders us is the failure to jump off the cliff. Many times, if you don't have the wings to fly, then what are you going to be depending on? For me, in my case, I had God in my life, and I know that he's the one who rescued me from the streets. He's the one who rescued me from the danger that I've grown up with. Personally, I do not have anything that can back that up. I knew that all my story was covered by Jesus in my life. When that happened, I tell you, he brought me from the slums–he's given me this inner voice. One of the verses I stick with in the Bible is 1 Peter 4:10, “That as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's very grace.”So, I knew that I had already received a lot of gifts from God. For me to fly off the cliff with no wings, I knew that I had God in my life even if I lost this job that was paying me a lot of money.Emmanuel offers advice to everyone:Whoever is listening in and by any chance in their communities, in their families, in their workspace, they have felt that there is something that they are not comfortable with and they would wish to change it. That's their superpower; that's their calling. The only thing they need to do is to act upon it and make it a reality. If you're watching this, I know there was a time in your life when you felt there was something that has to be changing in your community. You're the one to champion that change in that community. Following Emmanuel's example and advice can strengthen your ability to follow your inner voice that tells you to take action for good. With practice, you can make this a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest ProfileEmmanuel Trinity (he/him):Chief Job Creator, era92 CreativeAbout era92 Creative: era92 Global is a social enterprise agency that trains and connects the Top 1% of African creative Talent to Global companies.Website:www.era92creative.comTwitter Handle: @era92mediaCompany Facebook Page:Other URL: causeartist.com/slums-of-uganda-innovative-tech-ceo/Biographical Information: Emmanuel Trinity is a serial social entrepreneur from Kampala, Uganda, with a passion for upskilling the next generation of digital talent in preparation for jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities in Africa. He's the founder of era92 Creative- a Subscription Creative Services Social Enterprise powering the Next Generation of Digital Talent Across Africa.Trinity is also the co-founder of era92 Group, a group of social enterprises on a mission to reverse engineer poverty and create prosperity for Africans through businesses & microfinance.Trinity has created 1,500 jobs for youth from the slums of Uganda and is on a mission to create 10,000 jobs for young people across Africa. Special guest: Peter Mutabazi. Meet the Boon family vanuit Kampala (Uganda)!
