Sometimes stepping out of line takes 20 years to come to fruition. Don Schoendorfer is the author of Miracle Wheels and holds a Ph.D. in the biomedical engineering field. Haunted by an image he saw on vacation in Morocco of a woman crawling on the ground, Schoendorfer was encouraged to take a leap of faith and launch his own nonprofit organization, the Free Wheelchair Mission. His intention was to design an affordable wheelchair out of parts purchased at Home Depot and Toys “R” Us. Schoendorfer's prototype's success left him no choice but to pursue his humanitarian efforts by starting a nonprofit. The need for wheelchairs in Third World countries is too great to be ignored, and Schoendorfer knew he had to get his hands dirty and get physically into the mix by creating wheelchairs that could be put together and given away to those in need with the help of missionaries and NGOs. In January 2023 Wade Blair gave a presentation at the Carlsbad, CA Chamber of Commerce First Friday Breakfast and asked “Why do people set goals and never take the next steps to properly see them through?” Wade then introduced us all to “The Why Method”. Nikki Tobia was present that day. Months later at another First Friday Breakfast, I found myself facilitating at a networking table with Wade and Nikki Tobia from the “Free Wheelchair Mission.” Wade and Nikki started talking about Wade's previous presentation and they both became animated and passionate about the conversation they were having. I invited them both to come on this podcast to share that enthusiasm. Can God use an introvert to change lives? Don Schoendorfer, author, MIT engineer, Ph.D., and successful inventor, experienced great professional success, but it took a personal crisis to expose his shortcomings. When skill and mathematics failed him, Schoendorfer had an encounter with God that helped him begin to understand what it meant to live a surrendered life. He confronted a 50-year struggle with finding purpose and revisited restless impressions God had placed upon his heart. From this was born, Free Wheelchair Mission. Today, the mathematical introvert who didn't like being around people has changed lives in 93 developing nations by supplying 1.3 million free wheelchairs to those in desperate need. If you have ever wondered if it is possible to live a life of purpose and fulfillment serving God and people, Schoendorfer's example reveals that it is within your reach, you only need to grasp it. Erick Goss, Executive Director of Minno, will tell us about some wonderful family programming for this Christmas season! Erick is a digital media executive with expertise in content, community, and e-commerce development. Dawn will also have a conversation with Don Schoendorfer about the Free Wheelchair Mission! Don is a biomedical engineer who makes his home in Santa Ana, California. He has an undergraduate degree from Columbia University and a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT. In addition, he holds more than 60 patents in the biomedical field. More than 20 years ago, Don turned his God-given and MIT-developed engineering talents to solving the problem of immobility in developing countries. There are an estimated 75 million people with disabilities in the developing world who need a wheelchair, the vast majority of whom cannot get one on their own. The causes of disability range from illnesses and congenital conditions to injuries caused by accidents, landmines, and the effects of war. Working in his garage, Don built prototype wheelchairs that would become the iconic GEN_1 model, originally made of a standard white plastic lawn chair and two mountain bike tires mounted to a steel frame. Free Wheelchair Mission was born. Since 2001, the nonprofit that Don started has designed, manufactured, and distributed 1.3 million wheelchairs for people living with disabilities in 94 developing countries worldwide. When he is not busy working on wheelchairs, Don enjoys spending time with his three daughters and two amazing granddaughters.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As Nuka Solomon says, "Growth is an interesting word." She's right; depending on who's asking us—our board of directors, partners, or, heck, even a podcast host—we hold that concept of growth to the light and turn it to answer with the most beautiful kaleidoscope possible.Nuka is a pro when it comes to nonprofit growth: as the CEO of Free Wheelchair Mission, she's taken the organization through the pandemic with flying colors, supporting expansion in finances, reach, and engagement. But she hasn't done it alone; Free Wheelchair Mission's team, from the board to boots on the ground, has a stake in achieving their ever-evolving mission.Listen in as Nuka and Justin uncover how recent trends toward transparency, donor access and engagement, longevity of content, and deeper relationships have led to a paradigm shift in the way nonprofits define things like impact, growth, and investment.
Nonprofits address needs across the globe, providing a better quality of life to the families and communities they serve. Starting a new nonprofit takes dedication, research, and attention to detail. Interview with Freewheel Chair mission Don Schoendorfer.
In Luke 14, we are called to go out quickly into the streets and alleys to bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. Sometimes that can mean stepping far outside of your comfort zone to reach people with disabilities living in extreme isolation. This year, our Wheels for the World team traveled to Haiti where on a shortened outreach due to civil unrest, we were able to provide a record number of wheelchairs and Bibles to people in desperate need! This week, Mike Gaura and Chris Pearson share how God worked through many chaotic situations and unexpected changes to show meet the physical and spiritual needs of many people impacted by disability. See photos and stories at www.joniandfriends.org/podcast Joni and Friends was founded in 1979 by Joni Eareckson Tada who in a diving accident was left a quadriplegic at 17 years old. Ministry began as Tada, joined by friends around her kitchen table, responded to letters she received from people with disabilities in search of support. Over the past 40 years, the ministry has grown to serve thousands of people impacted by disability worldwide: Joni and Friends has delivered more than 150,000 wheelchairs and Bibles through Wheels for the World and provided Christian care to 63,000 special needs family members through Family Retreats. The organization also equips individuals and churches with disability ministry training and provides higher education courses through the Christian Institute on Disability. Today on the Podcast, Face off with Yourself and Fly. There's that saying, "wherever you go, there you are." And if you've ever thrown your hands up in the air and spontaneously moved across country, quit a job, ended a relationship or swan dived into a last minute Bali Yoga Retreat (ha! I get it!) — you may have learned just how true that statement really is. Turns out? Almost as soon as we get "there" we realize we're still "here." Like trying to shake your own shadow, you may soon realize you're the same person with the same thoughts, feelings, and actions ... only now you're in a new surrounding, or novel experience, which will (of course) soon become normalized again. Maybe even boring. And then what? Do you leave, again? Variety is a Human Need. So is Certainty. Don't get me wrong. Getting away is sometimes just what the doctor ordered. In fact, unique environments with opportunities to make fresh relationships is one of the absolute best catalysts for change!!! Think about why camp was so great as a child or why so many of us prioritize attending personal/professional development workshops and conferences. We love them because why? They're full of surprise and variety! More than that? They're just the catalyst, the spark, we need to get fired up again. But how many feel that hangover let down come Monday? When all the new faces have flown back home and you're back, alone, behind your desk. Day after day after day. All the clarity and conviction, all the certainty, from the weekend quickly begins to wane and you're (again) sitting in doubt; in overwhelm. Alone. Change your Mindset and your Skillset. See, it's not UNTIL we learn to change both how we think about things AND how we act on things that we FULLY shift the core thing that made us want to suddenly flee in the first place. Only then do we really feel momentum. Only then do all those seeds of ideas start to blossom into real world realities. And the KEY? To have intimate, deep, genuine accountability partners and frameworks to keep you motivated and focused even when the going gets tough. Even when you can't hop the next flight to Costa Rica. That's where mentorship, coaching, masterminds and membership communities make all the difference in the world. Taking you from ignition, to insight, to implementation. That type of ongoing support is what keeps stoking the fire and keeps helping you recreate those fun, memorable, connections and inspiration at home. Enter my conversation with Jeannette Ceja ... Jeannette Ceja is a bilingual travel journalist and a travel host with over five years of experience on the red carpet. She has interviewed countless of celebrities, athletes, politicians and travel experts including: Anthony Bourdain, Samantha Brown, Pauline Frommer, Rick Steves, Mira Sorvino, Chris O'Donnell, Jim Carey — to name only a few.
