In this episode of Mining Stock Education, host Brian Leni welcomes Nicole Adshead-Bell to discuss the psychology of participants in the junior mining sector. Listen as Nicole shares her insights on the current state of the gold and copper markets, the importance of profit-taking, and the dynamics driving M&A activity. Learn how understanding investor behavior and market cycles can help you make more informed and profitable investment decisions in the mining sector. Nicole Adshead-Bell is the Director of Cupel Advisory. She is a PhD geologist by trade and has worked in the resource sector for more than 25 years. Her roles within the sector have varied from analyst to M&A facilitator to junior resource company board member. Notable quote from Dr. Adshead-Bell: " None of us can predict the top or the bottom, but I think behavioral characteristics in bull markets are very, very predictable.  There's been really interesting psychological studies done on this, people get more upset with their broker for selling a winning position too early than they do for holding onto a losing position. And you just think about how irrational that is." 00:00 Introduction 00:27 Insights on Precious Metals 00:45 Market Behavior and Investment Strategies 03:46 The Psychology of Selling and Profit Taking 08:42 Generalist Investors and Market Sentiment 18:29 Mergers and Acquisitions in the Bull Market 24:04 Understanding Incentive Compensation in Mining 25:12 The Aurion and Rupert Resources Deal 28:11 Copper Market Dynamics and Predictions 32:13 Challenges and Opportunities in Mining Companies 36:20 The Importance of Geologists in Mining 39:27 Financing Strategies in the Mining Sector 43:13 Investment Strategies and Time Horizons 45:33 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Nicole's website: https://www.cupeladvisory.com/about Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 Mining Stock Education (MSE) offers informational content based on available data but it does not constitute investment, tax, or legal advice. Stijn Schmitz welcomes Quinton Hennigh to the show. Quinton Hennigh is an Internationally Renowned Economic Geologist who provides critical insights into the current state of mineral exploration and mining. Hennigh highlights a significant decline in metal discovery rates over the past decades, attributing this to major mining companies abandoning their internal exploration efforts and shifting responsibilities to junior exploration companies. Hennigh's current strategy focuses on acquiring assets with unrecognized exploration potential, particularly in underexplored regions like Bolivia, Argentina, and Japan. He emphasizes the importance of targeting large-scale deposits that would attract major mining companies' interest, believing that it requires nearly the same effort to explore a small project as a potentially world-class one. The discussion critically examines the current mining exploration landscape, with Hennigh expressing concern about the proliferation of junior mining companies. He argues that approximately 90% of these companies lack direction and technical capability, creating an inefficient market flooded with speculative ventures. This overcrowding has led to misallocation of capital and a diminishing pool of technical expertise in the mining sector. Hennigh is particularly critical of current industry practices, including the royalty and streaming models, which he describes as "parasitic" to mining companies. He also highlights challenges in permitting processes and regulatory compliance, suggesting these bureaucratic hurdles significantly impede mining development. Looking forward, Hennigh advocates for more efficient capital deployment, reducing permitting complexities, and attracting younger talent to the mining industry. He sees potential in unexplored regions and believes that with the right approach, significant mineral discoveries are still possible. His strategy involves identifying undervalued assets with substantial exploration potential, leveraging modern geological understanding to unlock value that previous explorers might have overlooked.

One of the strangest things about getting older has been the shift in my interests. Despite being intensely curious as a kid, I never cared about nature growing up. I didn't climb trees or capture bugs or explore creeks. But as I've gotten older all that's changed. Which has made me feel like I'm constantly catching up to those that spent their early lives trekking through the woods, paddling on rivers and exploring the natural world. I often think to myself, “Am I too old to start learning how to identify trees? What's the point of birding if it's going to take me 20 years to catch up? Is it sad that I do a podcast about nature while still knowing so little about it?” A little imposter syndrome mixed in there, of course. Luckily, my positive self-talk tamps those thoughts down long enough to embrace my curiosity. And since I've spent so much time outside, I've found more subjects I want to learn about. One of those topics is geology. Who else can relate to walking around and finding a cool looking rock or fossil and thinking, “I wonder what this is?” I know I do it all the time. You can't spend much time in Pennsylvania without running into examples of incredible geology. From the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains to the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers, Pennsylvania is packed with geologic features. State parks like Leonard Harrison, Ricketts Glen, Worlds End, McConnells Mill and Hickory Run are just a few state lands that have unique rocks, boulders, minerals, fossils and cliffs on full, beautiful display. Quartz, slate, shale, limestone, sandstone and marble are woven throughout the Commonwealth. And they can be found, literally, everywhere. Under our feet and above our heads. On the sides of the road and in the middle of forests. Rocks are just cool. But, as I've said, I don't know very much about them. So I wanted to interview someone who did. On this episode I speak with Russell Losco. Russ is a soil scientist & geologist adjunct professor at West Chester University and the host of the PCPG's A Poorly Sorted but Well Rounded Series. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. Mike Burke, Director and VP of Corporate Development at Sitka Gold (TSX.V:SIG - OTCQB:SITKF - FRE:1RF), joins me for an update on the company's latest drill results from the RC Gold Project in the Yukon. We discuss the most recent assays from the Rhosgobel discovery, which continues to deliver standout results. Key highlights from the update: Latest results: 162m of 1.02 g/t Au from surface, including 71m of 1.57 g/t Au. All 8 holes drilled to date exceed 100 gram-meters, with one exceeding 200. Strong continuity over ~300m strike length and mineralization observed down to 400m depth. Current program expanded from 10,000m to ~12,000m of drilling, with two rigs turning and ~41 holes completed so far. Geologists report visible gold in 31 of the first 34 holes logged. Potential resource estimate considered for early 2026, with comparisons drawn to major deposits in the Tombstone Gold Belt (Fort Knox, Valley, Eagle). Growing footprint of the Rhosgobel discovery suggests potential to host a multi-million-ounce deposit. In the ancient mountains of Western North Carolina, where emeralds hide in weathered stone and mist cloaks valleys older than memory, something watches from the shadows. This episode explores the legend of the Boojum, a massive, hair-covered recluse that has haunted these hills since before the Cherokee walked the ridges.Part Bigfoot, part treasure guardian, and wholly mysterious, the Boojum collects gems with the eye of a connoisseur and the strength to tear trees from the ground. Our story begins with a shaken geologist stumbling into a Burnsville diner with an impossible tale, then reaches back through centuries of encounters. From Cherokee oral traditions that speak of Nun'Yunu'Wi's cousin who left garnets at the doors of newborns, to Civil War soldiers fleeing in terror from a creature that seemed to forbid violence in its domain, to modern-day scientists discovering inexplicable forest gardens tended by an unknown hand, we trace the evolution of a legend that refuses to fade.Drawing from historical accounts, family journals, and the testimony of a secret network of protectors known as the Keepers, we explore  what happens when ancient mystery collides with the modern world of GPS tracking and thermal drones. In an age where every square foot of earth can be photographed from space, the Boojum reminds us that some things are more valuable when they remain hidden, and that wonder itself might be worth protecting.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our Sponsors

Many volcanoes are among the most majestic sights on the planet: Tall and wide, they belch molten rock or plumes of ash that can tower miles high. But there's another class of volcano that's much less impressive. These guys are short and squatty. And they burp out bubbles and blobs of mud, water, and gas. What they lack in majesty, though, they make up for in numbers: more than a thousand have been discovered on land, and many others have been found at the bottom of the ocean. One of the most recently discovered marine examples is the Borealis Mud Volcano. It's a quarter of a mile deep in the Barents Sea, an extension of the North Atlantic Ocean, between Finland and Greenland. It's a little more than 20 feet wide and about eight feet high. It's in a large field of craters and small cones. Like Borealis itself, many of the cones put out plumes of methane gas.Geologists discovered Borealis during a 2023 research cruise. They studied it in more detail a year later. They suggest that it formed about 18,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age.During the ice age, what is now the ocean floor was covered by a giant slab of ice. As the ice melted and retreated, the pressure went down and the temperature went up. That allowed a big pocket of methane ice to begin vaporizing. The pressure blew a hole in the sediments above it. Today, the Borealis Mud Volcano continues to belch out methane, mud, and water from below the Barents Sea.

Stone as Story, Earth as Kin: A Geologist's Invitation to Relearn the Planet with Marcia Bjornerud

My guest today is a woman who listens to stone the way others listen to music, hearing the layered rhythms, ancient memory, and hidden messages beneath our feet.Dr. Marcia Bjornerud is a structural geologist, writer, and professor at Lawrence University whose work explores the physics of earthquakes, the architecture of mountains, and the deep time story of our living planet. She is the author of several beloved books for popular audiences, including Reading the Rocks, Timefulness, Geopedia, and most recently, Turning to Stone: Discovering the Subtle Wisdom of Rocks, which won the 2025 John Burroughs Medal for Natural History Writing. In today's conversation, we explore Earth as an animate, dynamic system, one that has been reinventing itself for over 4 billion years, leaving records of her great experiments in stone. We dive into Marcia's life's work of decoding that record and into her belief that rocks are not inert, they are narrators of Earth's evolving story. Marcia invites us to understand the language of stone, to foster a “geo-centric” worldview that reconnects us with the rhythms and relationships of this planet, and to step into a deeper kinship with the Earth as home.We also speak about her travels to remote parts of the world, such as Svalbard, Norway, her reflections on the Anthropocene, how thinking like a geologist can help save the world, and what she may have learned from Indigenous wisdom traditions in her dialogue with land and rock. This is a conversation about time, transformation, and the quiet, enduring truths that live in stone.Episode Highlights:02:30 – Dr. Bjornerud's early fascination with rocks from glacial deposits in Wisconsin.04:00 – Structuring her latest book Turning to Stone around autobiographical chapters, each linked to a specific rock.06:00 – Defining the term "timefulness" and how seeing in geologic time alters our perception of the present.07:30 – Rocks as palimpsests: ancient stories overwritten but still traceable.08:45 – Rocks as verbs, not nouns: dynamic participants in Earth's ongoing transformation.10:30 – Witnessing the radical evolution of geoscience: from fixed continents to dynamic tectonics and complex climate models.13:00 – Paradigm shifts: from denying catastrophes to accepting extinction events like the one that ended the dinosaurs.16:00 – Ice age floods and possible global correlations to catastrophic water events.18:00 – Reflections on flat-earthers, epistemology, and failures in science education.20:30 – Dr. Bjornerud's spiritual and emotional connection with rocks and their silent companionship.22:30 – Working in rapidly changing Arctic landscapes and observing real-time geology in motion.24:00 – The language of stone: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks as dialects.26:00 – What would change if Western culture viewed the Earth as animate rather than mechanical?29:00 – Critiquing techno-optimism and misplaced hubris in dreams of colonizing Mars.32:00 – Hidden infrastructures of rock: aquifers, basalt weathering, and climate regulation.35:00 – Collaborating with Indigenous scientists and tribal legal teams to protect ecosystems.38:00 – Thinking like a geologist: embracing humility, interconnectedness, and a long-term perspective.40:00 – Letting go of narcissism and rediscovering our place in Earth's continuum.42:00 – Why colonizing Mars is scientifically implausible and ethically evasive.45:00 – Message for the seventh generation: the Earth abides—if we listen.47:00 – Closing reflection: stone as story, Earth as ancestor, and ourselves as part of a resilient and sacred cycle of becoming.Resources mentioned:Books by Dr. Marcia BjornerudTurning to Stone – https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781324093494Timefulness: How...
