In this episode, we sat down with Keith Rapp, senior hydrogeologist, longtime volunteer with ASBOG (the Association of State Boards of Geology), and immediate past president of the organization. We dug into the professional geologist licensure process — what the FG (Fundamentals of Geology) and PG (Practice of Geology) exams actually test, how questions get written and vetted by panels of subject matter experts, why some states require licensure and others don't, and why Keith argues that licensure is fundamentally about protecting public health and safety.Keith walked us through his path from growing up in Duluth with a geomicrobiologist uncle, to a master's in hydrogeology at Baylor, to a career cleaning up contaminated sites using microbes — what he calls hydrogeomicrobiochemistry. We talked about his current work on PFAS bioremediation, the idea of "pushing evolution" by engineering biofilm environments where microbes can adapt to degrade forever chemicals, and the role of zeolites as remediation media. We also got into the practical stuff students and early-career geologists actually want to know: how to study for the FG exam, why test scores point you toward weak domains, what reciprocity between states looks like, the difference between an ASBOG license and an AIPG Certified Professional Geologist (CPG) designation, and why writing skills still matter in a hiring pile. We closed with a conversation about AI in geoscience — where it helps, where it gets you in trouble when your name is on a signed report, and how the profession should think about it going forward. If you're a student preparing for the FG, a working geologist thinking about getting licensed in another state, or just curious about how a professional credentialing system gets built and maintained, this one is for you. The ASBOG annual meeting is in Hershey, PA this October — open to anyone interested in the profession.Download the CampGeo app now at this link. How to Identify Elite Geologists & New Discoveries Others Miss: Insights from Quinton Hennigh

Quinton Hennigh, exploration geologist, fund advisor, and CEO of San Cristobal Mining, shares tips on how to identify elite geologists and new discovers which others miss. He talks about the current exploration market and where the industry is in a metals bull cycle. Hennigh argues mining and exploration have been undercapitalized for years and that supply constraints, permitting delays, lab capacity limits, and shortages of technical staff and drillers create bottlenecks that could support a long bull market as gold and silver find new price floors. He discusses faster field-friendly assay approaches and why exploration often doesn't require ultra-low detection limits. Hennigh explains what separates elite geologists—mentorship, system-scale thinking, efficient drilling strategy, metallurgy focus. Investors should notice early “100 gram-meter” intercepts—and uses Snowline as an example why. He outlines jurisdictional opportunity in Bolivia, San Cristobal's community engagement through mining education support, and the company's private, cash-flow-funded growth plan toward major silver production. 00:00 Intro 00:53 Bull Market Outlook 03:11 Gold Silver Price Floors 07:17 Exploration Funding Cycle 08:32 Bottlenecks Labs Drillers 10:26 Portable Assays XRF 14:35 Elite Geologist Edge 15:32 Mentors Scale Thinking 18:41 Metallurgy First Filter 20:30 Gram Meters Framework 21:09 Reading Early Drill Signals 21:51 Snowline Valley Breakthrough 23:56 Remote Risk and Jurisdiction 27:22 Prospector Instinct Explained 29:57 AI Tools vs Human Intuition 31:39 Where Discoveries Happen Next 33:47 Bolivia Education Outreach 37:10 St Cristobal Growth Plan 40:10 Closing and Disclaimers Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 Mining Stock Education offers informational content based on available data but it does not constitute investment, tax, or legal advice. The rising ground could just be a normal thing, or it might mean some underground magma shenanigans. How old did the earth look five years after the creation? Geologists tell us that it takes hundreds of thousands of years to wear down new rock into sand and soil and for the sea to cut a beach. If this were true, one would not expect to see beaches or soil on an earth that was only five years old. Or would we?Off the coast of Iceland, over 300 feet below the surface of the ocean, hot volcanic rock began to seep into the cold ocean water in 1963. By 1967, over half a cubic mile of new, hot rock had formed a brand new island where there had once been only ocean. This new island was named Surtsey. The following summer, scientists arrived on the island to study it. They found that a basalt cliff on the beach had been eroded over 300 feet inland by the sea in less than five years. They found that several parts of the island already had terraced beaches up to 300 feet wide. On the north side of the island, they found that newly formed sand had formed a sand bar that extended almost 1,000 feet out from the original island. If geologists had not known that Surtsey was less than five years old, they would have guessed that the island was thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years old. After all, many geologists, rejecting the biblical account of a young creation, have used features such as sand beaches to try to prove that the earth is millions of years old!Psalm 44:1“I thank You, Lord, for the record of Your deeds that has been preserved for our learning in the Bible. I thank You for the sacrifices of those who preserved it and for those who gave their lives for its truth. Help me to live a life worthy of the great gift of Your saving Word. Amen.”Prayer: I thank You, Lord, for those scientists who work to honor You. Bless them and keep them under your protection as they work in a field that is generally hostile to your Truth. Amen.REF.: Normann, J.O. Trends in post-volcanic development of Surtsey Island. Surtsey Research Progress Report V (Reykjavik: Surtsey Research Society). What is a Professional Geologist? An Intro to Licensure

Jesse and Dr. Joshua Davis introduce a new series on professional geology licensure, prompted by listener questions, exam study use of their podcast, and continuing-education approvals. Jesse shares starting the U.S. process by taking the FG (Fundamentals of Geology) exam and explains the typical U.S. pathway in 31 states: FG exam, geologist-in-training status, years of work experience under a licensed geologist (with some state-dependent education carve-outs), then the PG exam and references. Josh contrasts Canada and the UK, noting the UK's Chartered Geologist is less central, while Canadian systems are province-based and may restrict the “geologist” title; Quebec lacks an academic carve-out and requires supervised experience plus an exam. They discuss rationales for licensure—public protection, minimum geology competency amid changing degree names, professional trust, insurance coverage, employability, and continuing education.Download the CampGeo app now at this link. OMSI exhibit looks at geological events of Pacific Northwest through a Nez Perce lens

Much of our understanding about the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods that shaped the geology of the Pacific Northwest comes from Western scientists. But those records almost always overlook the oral traditions of Native American tribes who witnessed those events.   An exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland looks at the eruption of Mount Mazama, the Ice Age floods and other geological events through the perspective of the Nez Perce and other Columbia Basin tribes. “Heads & Hearts: Seeing the Landscape through Nez Perce Eyes” is on display through Feb. 16.   Geologists Roger Amerman and Ellen Bishop created the exhibit, which originally appeared at the Josephy Center for Arts & Culture in Joseph. They join us to talk about how Native oral traditions can — and should — inform modern science.
