It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... In this double feature episode, it's a tale of two theaters. Mark regales us with stories from his grimy and skin-crawling AMC screening of TMNT, while Matt brags about his VIP fan event experience at the glossy Whole Foods cinema for the uber-rich & famous like the fancy lad that he is. It's like Rich Dad, Poor Dad... except with movies! Join us as we review Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench, the first studio outing for arthouse weirdo Ben Wheatley. Does he High-Rise it up, or did Warner Bros. put him on their Kill List and reign him in? Along the way, we also chat a bit about Guardians Volume 3, the Union Square PS5 riot (so timely! so political!), and escapism in movies. It's A LOT. Cowabunga, dudes. WARNING: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2023 Disney/Marvel Studios' Release "Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3” or do not mind hearing key plot points. This is the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy movie directed by James Gunn. This movie is part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story follows events from the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which aired on Disney+ in December 2022. Gunn finished this project before becoming one of the Co-Chairman and CO-CEOs of DC Studios. Gunn had originally been fired from Volume 3 after controversial jokes that he made on Twitter had resurfaced. Subsequently, Gunn wound up making The Suicide Squad before being rehired to write and direct Guardians Volume 3. The story ties up the main storyline from all the films and incorporates events from the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eddie Pence returns to the podcast to offer his insight on the film. Pence called it the best Marvel movie since Endgame. This episode focused on all the great easter eggs and fan service provided in the movie, and where it places in the overall story arc of the MCU. Seth references some key plot points from this film that seem to derive from an obscure Spider-Man animated series from the late 1990s.

On this episode we wrap up our read of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps with the last 4 volumes.  Volume 4 Fracture Volume 5 Twilight of the Guardians Volume 6 Zod's Will Volume 7 Darkstars Rising There are some really great moments in the remainder of this run. Last time we talked about how great Guy Gardner was and this time it's John Stewart. This run really shows how strategic Stewart is and what his leadership is like. Honestly in someways it's like if Batman was Black and had a Power Ring.  The other thing this run does really well is set up a connection to the past and leave bits and pieces of other writers to come bak and fill in. Now whether they do that or not is beyond the scope of this episode, but we can appreciate what was done here.  Also, if you're like Dpalm, you're gonna love all the professional wrestling homages.  If you want to hear us talk more about the Green Lantern Corp, check our our three part deep dive into the Corps. 0:20 Cory KostiukHey Sean hope all is well with you. Who can you see from WWE joining the MCU and who would you cast them as?2:17 Woo S! KimGoing off on what you said on the most recent episode of the podcast Sean about possibly in the second Black Panther film that there may be an internal revolution within Wakanda, do you believe that a likely candidate for this revolution could be W'Kabi?3:39 Cory KostiukHello again Sean. What are your thoughts on Magneto showing up as a villain in movie other than an X-Men? Thanks5:54 David RosenHey Sean, Have you seen or heard of the YouTube fan series, “One Marvelous Scene”? If not, or for those who haven't, it started as a challenge among a small group of YouTubers in the lead up to End Game to create a short video breaking down and analyzing a particular scene from the MCU that they love. The concept has since blown up and I think there are probably close to a hundred or so of these videos now, if not more. So, with that being said, have you thought about ever creating one of these videos, and even if not, what one scene would you pick to breakdown and analyze? To be clear, I would say it doesn't have to necessarily be your favorite scene, but one that was done exceptionally well, for whatever reason you believe.11:12 Robert KlauserWhat's up Sean? Going back to what we talked about on Office Hours, Victoria Alonso answered a question about IW/EG being released in the IMAX format on home video for international markets on Reddit. But when we discussed it, her answer was taken down. Do you have any speculation as to why her answer for that question would be removed? Thanks for all the awesome content and for the great discussions on the Discord and Office hours!16:09 Giuseppe VicarettiHey Sean and fellow Patrons, hope everyone is having a great week. My question for you this time is, kind of related to my questions last time. There are so many moments that I find myself looking back on in all of these films, some include the comedic moments of Tony with the congressman in Iron Man 2, Tony calling Thor Point Break in the Helicarrier in Avengers 1, and so many more. What are some of your favorite moments in these 22 films that you feel you'll never forget?19:10 Terry MortensenHey Sean and fellow patrons. I hope everyone is doing well. I have two questions this week. Do you think there is a chance that Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 takes place between Guardians Volume 2 and Infinity War rather than post-Endgame? It seems like the current lineup could be the new iteration of the team James Gunn has alluded to. If this happens do you think Taika Waititi would make Asguardians of the Galaxy rather than Thor 4?20:47 Terry MortensenDo you know why are movies are measured by box office total rather than the total number of tickets sold? I think measuring tickets sold could allow new and old movies to be judged on at least closer to the same standard rather than adjusting for box office.Alex WardDo you think GOTG Vol. 3's story and/or script will be affected by its delay? I wonder about the fact that since the movie was planned to be released much sooner, and given the franchise's popularity, it could have some major ramifications for the MCU that may now have to come to fruition in different ways given the delay.34:30 David RosenConsidering it played for him when Cap passed on his shield in End Game, do you want to hear the Captain America theme for Sam in the Disney+ series or would be prefer a new theme that is either a little different or just completely new altogether?36:06 Jerry KowalskiAsking for a friend, We have a bet for the last yr since AIW, I say LOKI is dead..She claims he isn't..yes 2012 Loki is running around, but is he?..Russo's in an interview said, unlike comics actors do age and his arc was up..i agree..and combined w/ all the time travel..and did I mention we have a Dinner bet..i feel Loki did die.."No resurrections this time"..thanx for all u and Paul do..38:32 Mookie JohnsonI have a question based on yesterday's Daily Bugle. Hypothetically, if Peyton Reed were to direct the Fantastic Four film, would that delay the scheduling of the next movie in the ant family franchise?39:43 Mookie JohnsonDo you think the reports of the Wanda Vision series being set so far in the past might be a clue that we will see more of the human Jarvis? The summer started off with one of the biggest movie openings of all time!!! Avengers: Endgame! A culmination of over ten years and over 20 movies to tell one massive story arc. Did Marvel pull it off? Were they able to live up to the hype after the snap heard round the MCU? A movie this big requires more than one episode. Sit back and enjoy part one of Cinematic Brotastic's Avengers: Endgame Podcast. The Spoiler Ban has been lifted!!!! Spoilers ahead!! Avengers: Endgame sets the stage for the emotional ride you are about to embark on right out of the gate. The film opens on Hawkeye and his family enjoying a picnic. You just know it’s before the Snap that wiped out half of all life in the universe… and you know what is about to happen. You see the train coming, you’re stuck on the tracks, and there is nothing you can do. In the end tag of Captain Marvel, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers shows up asking, “Where’s Fury?” This does afford the opportunity for the characters to have already met and introduced themselves, however, Andrew was in the mindset that the end tag was a scene from within Endgame and not a stand alone element. This made the start of the film a little confusing. It was no surprise that a franchise that contains an infinity stone that controls time, that time would be played with eventually. What was surprising is that Endgame changed some of the rules of time travel. The general understanding of time travel is that if you change the past, you alter the future. Back to the Future’s entire plot line depends on this understanding. Marty McFly’s parents don’t kiss at the formal dance, that would eventually lead to marriage and having kids, therefore Marty will erase from existence unless he fixes history. The Terminator relies on the same concept; kill Sara or John Connor when they’re young to prevent the greatest leader against the machine uprising. Rather Endgame points out that although the heroes are traveling to the past, it is still their specific future. Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and the rest of the Avengers are still moving forward in time from their perspective, even though their destination is in the past. Because of this, changing the past won’s fix the future. The Avengers have to get the stones and Alter reality itself to fix what Thanos has done. In the film, this all makes perfect sense, however thinking about this new approach to time travel story telling, leaves a lot of possible paradoxes that mess with the stories continuity. It will require multiple viewings possibly to get a better understanding of the rules of time travel as the Russo Brothers and the screen writers have interpreted. An unexpected thread that gets explored in Endgame is the use of a younger villain. Thanos was revealed to be looming in the background of all the MCU movies to date. We don’t get to see him, with a few exceptions, until Guardians Volume 1. Even then, however, his character is not really explored until Infinity War. In infinity war his plan is crazy, but there is a logic to it. He, in his mind, is doing what is needed for the universe to thrive. We see this in Endgame; Stark has a kid, the water is cleaner. For Endgame though, the Thanos we are introduced to is one who has yet to retrieve the infinity stones. By the end, Thanos’ mission for the stones is personal. He plans to reimagine the universe altogether. Doing so would leave no-one behind to long for what was; a more sinister plan than before. The Thanos from infinity war is compassionate in a way, but the Thanos from Endgame is much more sinister. With an impressive 3 hour and 2 minute runtime, it is impossible to include everything in one podcast. Check back in next week for part 2! Until next time, we’ll see you at the movies. And don’t forget to check your ticket stubs.

2:16 James KaplanDo you think Endgame underutilized Captain Marvel? I think she had a few good scenes but was expecting her to be more central to the story given the end of Infinity War. I also thought that maybe her characterization suffered a bit from being filmed before her solo movie. Anyway, would love to know your thoughts. 6:39 Ronald AcostaHey Sean! I'm on the side that's against introducing mutants via a multiverse. I've always felt that it might steer on the edge of being too convoluted. However it looks more and more like that's going to be the case with both this latest Spider-Man trailer and the reports that Diego Luna's Ghost Rider on Hulu May introduce a different origin/setting being strong indicators.I have nothing against a multiverse, but regarding a multiverse introduction for Mutants, I'm apprehensive as this would be a fairly new concept to tackle in a live-action cinematic format. I'm more than sure Marvel Studios can get us there and I know it all comes down to the execution, but I'm just curious as to what your thoughts or concerns may be. Especially with regards to how this might be the way we get the X-Men in the MCU. I know a lot of us have asked multiple versions of this question in previous q&a's, but given this new context, do you have any strong ideas of how it should be handled if this is the case? Or will you take the wait and see approach?11:24 Woo S! KimWhat did you think of the “Tonight Show” cover “We didn't start the fire” featuring Marvel Studios' stars?  The reveal of Stan “The Man” got me right in the feels?11:51 Woo S! KimI was just thinking about this do you think this run that Marvel Studios is having from “Iron Man” to now is comparable to Pixar's great run from “Toy Story” to “Cars 2” in terms of box office and critical response?12:45 Robert KlauserHi Sean and Patrons. I know we discussed Thanos for a bit on the Office Hours channel, (which is awesome btw) but what do you think influences the stark (no pun intended) contrast between the benevolent of sorts Thanos in IW to the ruthless version we get in Endgame? Thanks.24:33 Orion ZangaraHey Sean, Thanks for being my favorite podcast! You guys absolutely rock! With the potential news that the marvel cinematic universe will become the marvel cinematic multiverse, do you think marvel studios will use this opportunity to create an “ultimate universe?” That way marvel studios doesn't have to reboot the entire cast and still have characters cross over between the primary universe. Thanks again!29:01 Michael WeaselboyHey Sean I have a Spider-Man question. Since Far From home counts as a Sony movie, and assuming Marvel and Sony will renew the deal for Spidey. What Marvel movie will Spidey appear in next?? I know they will likely do a third movie but that counts as Sony's movie, and with no Avengers movies planned for the next few years, what movie will he appear in next?? Could he guest star in Doctor Strange 2 or some other movie??36:41 Nick AdamsHey Sean I have a question about time travel in Endgame. They say that they have enough Pym particles for a round trip each. 2014 Nebula gives Thanos her final particle, but still manages to come back to 2023 with everyone else. Is this just a flaw, or am I missing something?Side note: just subscribed to the Patreon a week or so ago, and I'm loving every minute of it. Keep up the good work!40:09 Derek BeebeHey Sean, do you think there is any chance of a MCU Star Wars crossover movie, and if so, what would you like to see?  I could only assume such a story would be out-of-continuity for both franchises.41:07 Derek BeebeEven more unlikely, could you ever see a MCU / DC movie come to pass?  And who would you like the villain to be?  A single one or a MCU and DC villain teaming up as well?43:42 Derek BeebeDo you think the next mega phase of the MCU will revolve around a single McGuffin like the Infinity Gauntlet?  If so, what would it be?  My theory would be the emergence of the mutants and the Phoenix Force culminating in Avengers vs. X-Men for the fate of the Phoenix.  Of course, I do wonder if they would be willing do any version of Dark Phoenix for a third time.48:18 Giuseppe VicarettiHey Sean and fellow Patrons, after seeing Endgame 5 times now, and my question is could we see Spiderman step up his mantle and be the new "Iron Man" of this new generation of Avengers? Or would we be intrigued with Tony's Daughter stepping into the fold when she comes of age? I don't like the latter only because we would have to wait a good amount of time before seeing that, whereas Spiderman is sort of already stepping into it, so to speak. What are thoughts on this? Is there someone else I may have overlooked?51:26 Mookie JohnsonI find it interesting that MCU Spider-Man keeps introducing himself as "Peter Parker ". I recognize that it is amongst fellow heroes as far as we've seen through Endgame, but I thought that protecting his Identity has been a core trait. Is this something you find strange about his MCU characterization?53:08 Mookie JohnsonIn your head canon, who ran Wakanda during the 5 years of the royal children's absence, and do you think the transition of power back to T'Challa was universally accepted?56:56 Brian WhiteWhen Rhodey returns with the Power Stone, it comes in the Orb that we see in Guardians Volume 1, but Steve only returns to the past with the Power Stone in the suitcase. Going to be hard to restore the stone to its containment on Morag for Peter to find without that, I think. Thoughts on how Steve might correct this in Captain America 4, the movie or Disney Plus series (I hope!)? Thanks!58:39 Alex KleinBased off the new Spider-Man trailer and interview with Watts on Fandango, I'm wondering if Far From Home is going to play out more like Iron Man 3 than Ant Man/Antman&Wasp in terms of box office. Knowing this movie may heavily deal with Endgame fall out could push it to 1 billion.1:00:06 Conor KellyHi Sean, I'm a bit confused about the Fury/Parker dynamic from the “far from home” trailers and ending of endgame. In the trailers Fury is waiting in Peters room and hits Ned with tranquilliser. How come Peters spider senses didn't alert him that someone was there and why then did he say “you're Nick Fury” like he'd never seen him before? Surely they met at Tony's funeral as they were standing about 10feet apart during it!!1:04:04 Robert ReinekeHi Sean. Is it just me, or is it weird to be launching a Black Widow movie after we've just seen what's presumably her fate in Avengers: Endgame? I think many of us feel that Black Widow not having a solo movie was an oversight, and her not being with the mini-teamup of female heroes at the finale was something of a missed opportunity, but I don't think it's something that can be retroactively fixed.  The MCU has been good at moving forward, so it seems like a prequel is a little out of step with the rest of the movies. Your thoughts?1:09:04 Jeremy WatsonSean, did you think it odd that Endgame didn't make a single reference to Vision? Wanda sort of hinted at him in her encounter with Thanos but nothing up to that point. Do you expect Wandavision to be the next time we see or hear of him? Thanks!1:11:40 AdamHey Sean. I know this isn't strictly a MCU question but it relates to the TV shows. I have always loved the tv shows that marvel puts out but now with Disney + I'm wondering which of the shows are technically cannon and which ones I should continue with. I love agents of Shield but know that it's not Necessarily cannon anymore. Do you have any recommendations on which shows I should stick with and which shows to drop when it comes to the mcu as a whole. Thanks 1:14:37 Rich WardIn Endgame when Scott is sitting outside the Avengers compound eating, Nebula seems uncommonly mean here. As far as I know she's never met or interacted with Scott, but when she sees his lunch blow away and walks by she says: "Careful, Rhodey, there's an idiot in the landing zone." Small, silly thing, and led to one of favorite moments (Hulk handing Scott two of his tacos), but stands out to me during each watch. I get why Rhodes makes the comment he does, but why do you think Nebula acts that way?1:16:16 Rich WardIn several recent interviews, Joe and Anthony Russo have said that Cap going back in time to be with Peggy has created a new timeline. From the New York Daily News: “Basically, in order for Cap to have that experience with Peggy, he would've begun another timeline," Anthony said. “Let's say he went back and found Peggy at the moment after he went in the ice but before she married somebody else. He could've begun the life with her at that moment in an alternate timeline.”But, in an Fandango interview, writer Markus and McFeely "reject" that theory:Fandango: So people are asking... Does this mean an old Captain America was hanging out this whole time while another Captain America was saving the day?Christopher Markus: That is our theory. We are not experts on time travel, but the Ancient One specifically states that when you take an Infinity Stone out of a timeline it creates a new timeline. So Steve going back and just being there would not create a new timeline. So I reject the "Steve is in an alternate reality" theory. What are your thoughts on the disconnect? Do you think this is intentional, to create a bit of confusion and ambiguity, and to let Marvel reveal more about time travel, the multiverse, etc. in the years and stories ahead, or could it simply be that they disagree on the rules of time travel? It's hard to imagine these four making a movie like Endgame while disagreeing on such an important piece of the story. Or maybe it's not that important or hard to imagine and I'm thinking way too much about it!1:24:34 Hector Giovanni NavarreteIn regards to the Multiverse opening up in the MCU due to the events in AE. Do you believe it could've happened due to the fact that Thanos destroyed all of the Infinity Stones? I have only seen the movie twice so I am not sure if I understood 100% accurately the explanation of the Ancient One about what happens when a Stone is taken out of a certain timeline. She mentioned how that could create an alternate timeline. So could something similar or the Multiverse opening up happen when the Stones themselves are destroyed and essentially taken out of the current MCU timeline? Just something I was thinking about, could be totally wrong.1:26:48 Keith BarberHi Sean - If Tony's arc reactor in Endgame only powers the suit/nanotech and is no longer keeping Tony alive, why does the light go out when he dies? Sorry if this has already been addressed, I may have missed it.1:29:08 Chris CascioHey Sean just been thinking of our post endgame world the mcu is in. I was wondering outside of the Xmen or FF who are some of the heroes that you would like to see enter the MCU. Two for me are Captain Britain and Nova the Sam Alexander Nova.1:29:53 Giuseppe VicarettiAnother questuon I have for you Sean is, do you think the Black Widow and Hawkeye moment on Vormir was not handled the best way it could have been? My meaning is, do you think Hawkeyes death would have had a longer lasting impact on our characters? Also do you think they dragged out that scene longer than they should have? Our affinity for the Infinity War should be obvious at this point as this episode marks the 5th in our review of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Check out MCU 1 through 4, where we cover Iron Man through Ant Man, MCU films 1 through 12. In this episode no. 5, we review the action spectacular that is Captain America: Civil War, the visual spectacular that is Doctor Strange, and the comic spectacular that is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Yes, there were a lot of spectaculars, and yes, I really enjoy that word. Do stay tuned for our 6th episode of the series, which we’ll release later this week covering Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther. For a fuller review of Black Panther, also check out episodes 42 & 43. We’ll update you on the news surrounding this year’s biggest blockbuster and first Oscar contender as well as fully bridge the gap to The Infinity War. Civil War was a magnificent achievement and somehow accomplished by a pair of comedy nerds. But enough about our review, the Russo brothers are also pretty talented. We gush about Marvel’s magic touch, compare it to those jabronies over at DC, and then we gush all the more. We kinda liked this one. Doctor Strange earns a more balanced and mixed review. But there are plenty of moments to relish and visual effects to admire. It’s one of the stronger origin stories to be sure, and we try to give it credit where it’s due. As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we’re often reduced to a Chris Farley Show from SNL like simplicity. “You remember when….you remember that?...that was awesome.” But we also have some quibbles with this movie too because we can’t silence our inner movie critic, which if we were schizophrenic, may have completely taken us both over at this stage in our podcasting lives. Regardless, we hope it’s a fun listen. It’s the Oscar off-season, and we’re having an absolute blast covering some different topics. Check out our Netflix Quarterly episode (61) where we reviewed over 37 new titles from the streaming giant. We invented a movie game called SeeBuySkip in ep. 59 and reviewed the movie event that was A Quiet Place (62). We also did a mock award show for all of the Basketball Movies ever made in a two part mini-series (54 & 55). But our Oscars clock keeps ticking. We previewed next year’s show with an episode (53), gave you a history lesson on the winningest films (60), and we’ll have not one but two quick hitters on Best Original Song categories from 1997 and 2013 to be released over the next two weeks. So stay tuned. Feel free to contact us on social media. We’re on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and Gmail. Please help us spread the word about our show where & when you can, and of course, we thank you for listening. When reality sucks, watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
