Locarno Meets

Joining us this week on Locarno Meets is Ehsan Khoshbakht, curator of a major retrospective focusing on Columbia Pictures during its heyday of 1929-59. A centerpiece of the 77th Locarno Film Festival, this 44-film program redefined and recontextualized the legendary Hollywood studio during the tenure of its famously tyrannical president and co-founder: Harry Cohn. In our wide-ranging conversation, Khoshbakht spoke about the work of assembling the retrospective using Columbia's weekly release schedules in partnership with the Sony-Columbia archive, about Cohn's complex legacy, and about the unusual amount of freedom afforded to auteurs and women creators at the studio during its Golden Age.

Legend has it that when Jean Arthur walked out of Columbia Studios for the very last time, she shouted "I'm free! I'm free!" If it didn't happen that way, well, Jean had her own habit of stretching the truth so The Old Movie Lady thinks it's okay. She was the unusual character with the quirky voice who became a star in her mid-thirties (shhh!) and appeared in a string of classics like Mr Deeds Goes to Town, The Devil and Miss Jones, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, The More the Merrier. and You Can't Take It With You. But how did she get there, and what lead to Jean's ecstatic departure from Harry Cohn's studio? Find out that and more, in this special episode of OML, this is Close Up: Jean Arthur. Patrial Transcript: Recovering from the dissolution of her marriage as well as a second suicide attempt, Hazel was determined to move on with her life in Paris. The French film industry was interested in Hazel. Now that she felt she had earned more maturity and life experience, she was comfortable actually acting in a role. So she went on set for Le Desordre et la Nuit (Disorder of the Night) where she played a supporting role as a dancer. It was the first time she was playing someone other than herself on screen. Her son shared that after the first day of filming, Hazel came home and announced, “Your Mother does not speak french!” According to Skipper, he knew there was trouble whenever she began a sentence with “your mother.” It turned out that her accent needed work, not necessarily her language skills so the studio got her a french dialect coach.  That same day, they got the news that Harry Cohn, the president of Columbia Pictures had died. She explained to the cast and crew the whole story of Cohn and his promise that she would never make another movie until the day he died. And now, years after his promise, he died and she was on a set filming. It would become one of her favorite stories to tell, no longer would Cohn threaten her career on the big screen. Hazel went on to film a couple of other french films. Very nearly including Paris Blues  with Sidney Poitier & Paul Newman but ultimately the part went to another. She was still synonymous with being a musician even on the big screen. Hazel said, “Once you played the priest, you can never play the gangster…Everybody just wants me to come on and sing. And I can do so much more than that.”  Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Partial Transcript: By the 1940s, Hazel Scott was touring the country, known for her unique style of piano and singing, combining classical music with jazz. Her short film career was now cursed by Columbia Picture's head Harry Cohn. “I have always been a very strong feminine creature,” Hazel said, “and to subdue me a very, very strong masculine creature is required.” Enter Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. He was born on Nov 29th, 1908. When his family moved from Connecticut to Harlem, he had his first brush with racism. The Powell family were mostly light-skinned of African, European and Native American ancestry. His lighter complexion did often lead to bullying, with one block of black children and another block of Italian and Irish children demanding to know if he was white or black. In order to survive, Adam became what people needed him to be, black in black crowds and white in white crowds. This chameleon-like adjustment was the beginning of his natural charisma that would make him a successful politician. Learn and listen more:https://shows.acast.com/who-was-she-podcastAlso available on:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/who-was-she/id1548368026https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JJS5J2T/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_H6paGbTR63EK9https://open.spotify.com/show/78a4pv6tYgad4C0mEftAgBYou can also find more information on our social media:http://instagram.com/whowasshepodcasthttps://www.facebook.com/whowasshepodcasthttps://www.pinterest.com/whowasshepodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Frank Sinatra was one of the most successful recording artists of the twentieth century. He was also one of the controversial figures within American mass culture. From the earliest days of his ascent, rumors abounded with respect to his alleged connections to the criminal underworld. In Episode 24, Pettengill examines these connections that intersect American culture, even in a twenty-first century context. But WAS Sinatra connected? Did a Don, ANY DON, make Harry Cohn...or Tommy Dorsey an "offer they" couldn't refuse? The answers are complicated.

In our Jean Arthur Acteurist Oeuvre-view this week, we look at two of Arthur's best-known comedies, Easy Living (1937), directed by Mitchell Leisen, with a screenplay by Preston Sturges, and You Can't Take It With You (1938), directed by Frank Capra. Dave explains why Jean Arthur's performance in Easy Living is his all-time favourite comedy performance by an actress. (Hint: it involves a pig called "Wafford.") We ponder Arthur's transformation into a glamorous romantic lead, even as she retains her (slightly off-kilter) ordinary person qualities, and the contrasting comic visions of Sturges and Capra. Then, in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we discuss our second double feature of Tod Browning's Dracula and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, the subject of our 2019 Halloween episode. This time around we find a lot to say about Coppola's Dracula as a Dionysian Christ figure who can lead Winona Ryder out of the death-in-life of civilization.  Time Codes: 0h 1m 00s:        EASY LIVING (1937) [dir. This episode will begin to weave the complex tapestry that was Hollywood's mafia scene. Pettengill notes how much of this process began when Al Capone tried to extend his influence into Southern California. It was unsuccessful but he did stumble upon Roselli in the process. And before long, Roselli became Capone's "man in Hollywood." Not to be outdone, the Eastern Syndicate sent their man, Benny Bugsy Siegel, to counter the influence of the Chicago Outfit. Sprinkled into the mix are individuals like Harry Cohn and Billy Wilkerson, who had complicated relationships with numerous underworld figures. Collectively, these individuals helped organized crime reinvent itself as the nation neared the Second World War.

While we see more of the familiar Arthur comedy persona emerge in The Whole Town's Talking, she gets to show off her quiet moral authority and perspicacity in Party Wire, playing a woman who becomes the victim of town gossip. After twenty years in front of a camera, Loretta Young walked out of her contract with Twentieth Century Fox and became a freelance star. Darryl Zanuck blackballed her as a result, which lead to months without any script offers. She began her independent film career in Columbia studio, because Harry Cohn was one filmmaker brazen enough to defy Zanuck. Loretta made two pictures: The Doctor Takes a Wife (with Ray Milland) and He Stayed for Breakfast (with Melvyn Douglas). Both pictures were critical and commercial successes and established her facility with light comedy.

Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford star in Gild- sorry, Affair in Trinidad, Hayworth's first film upon her return to Hollywood after four years away, and a blatant rip-off of a certain classic film noir from 1946. (There's also a chunk of Notorious thrown in for good measure.) Expensively cobbled together at Columbia boss Harry Cohn's instruction, its production was rushed, with its script barely presentable and Vincent Sherman's direction lazy, but audiences weren't put off - it made $7m domestically, blockbuster box office in 1952. Now featured as part of Columbia Noir #2, a box-set from the same series that includes The Garment Jungle, we take the opportunity to see what Affair in Trinidad has to offer - for José, the answer is, "not much, besides Rita Hayworth, gorgeous gowns and rich cinematography" - and discuss more besides, including Hayworth's name and image, and how and why they were changed. Affair in Trinidad is far from a good film, but one of historical interest, and certainly worth seeing for any fan of Rita Hayworth. Recorded on 18th April 2021.

The co-producers discuss the legend of Marilyn’s white piano as a metaphor for her childhood. Discussed is the identity of her abuser, the woman who failed to protect her, and the impact of sexual abuse and childhood trauma on her life. Gary, Nina, and Randall also cover how Marilyn learns to protect herself in the male-powered entertainment industry and her meeting with studio mogul Harry Cohn at Columbia in 1948 when she attempts to negotiate her contract after completing Ladies of the Chorus.

In 1946, Orson Welles decided to make a musical out of Around The World In Eighty Days. He wanted a circus on stage, traveling by a train running through the West. When the show cast ballooned to seventy, including four mechanical elephants, his original producer Mike Todd, pulled out. Welles went to Harry Cohn of Columbia Pictures for money. In exchange, Welles would put the play on Broadway, and direct a film at no fee. The problem was, Welles' wife Rita Hayworth had a long-standing hatred for Cohn, even though she was still employed by RKO. In late Spring Welles moved to New York. Around The World In Eighty Days premiered on Broadway at the Adelphi Theatre on May 31st, 1946. The film that Welles agreed to do in exchange for Cohn's help became The Lady From Shanghai.

Joseph Losey’s creepy noir stars Evelyn Keyes as an unhappy wife who spends every night alone, a captive audience to her husband’s voice on the radio. Losey’s picture blends a thoughtful social critique, which anticipates ‘the problem that has no name’, as well as men who chase material wealth, and the pernicious way the line between entertainment and advertisement is blurred by the media. I close the episode with two chapters from Scarlet O’Hara’s Younger Sister, the juicy bestseller from Evelyn Keyes, where she recalls the time when her boss Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Studio, vowed to make her a star.

Joan Bennett demonstrates that ignoring a man can be as effective as having an expert sass mouth. Her natural champagne blonde hair suits the icy character she plays. George Raft exhibits more range here than in any other film of his career. He cracks jokes, sings, and tries to be worthy of Joan Bennett. I close the episode with an excerpt from Tay Garnett's memoir Light Your Torches and Pull Up Your Tights, which recalls the time when he was hired by Harry Cohn to direct the picture. This one is an overlooked gem.

The legendary studio boss Harry Cohn once said to one of his writers, that if you want to send a political message, use Western Union. The point was that movies were for entertainment. Some have even tried to make that argument with respect to novels, but over the years, this has hardly been the case. One of the great examples is Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. Released 75 years ago, this month. This story of ambition, love, and architecture reverberates through our political discourse today, both in middle America and in the halls of Congress. What other 75-year-old novel can spark a heated debate between Paul Ryan and Paul Krugman? Yaron Brook is an Israeli American entrepreneur and writer. He’s the current chairman of the board of the Ayn Rand Institute where he was its executive director from 2000 to 2017 and is leading the effort to mark the 75th anniversary of The Fountainhead. Tommy Curtis on the impetus for "Meetin' and Greetin'" "You came up to me and said, 'You're doing a great job,'" and I think I just had huge ratings or whatever it is. You said, 'Tom, you know. I want to say this in the way Andy would say it, because he was a legendary boss and a great guy. He said, 'Tom, I don't think that cruisin' and boozin' is so correct anymore. Can you come up with something else?" You didn't say, 'Stop using 'cruisin' and boozin''," but you said, 'Come up with something else,' and that's how meetin' and greetin' began, thanks to you." Tommy Curtis, The Matchmaker Meetin' and Greetin' A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen and this is Our Town, and this is a special, special broadcast for me, a podcast, to introduce this man that I've known for many, many, many years. The actual creator ofthe iconic American phrase, "meetin' and greetin'," my guest is a local legend according to the Washington Post, and according to WMALFM. He was a Yale man also, and has the unique distinction of having appeared on the front page of the Post Style section, Metro section, Sunday magazine, and a story on page one. In addition, the City Paper profiled him in a lengthy cover piece. Further, he is a subject of an acclaimed filmmaker, Dave Nuttycombe's short documentary, Match Me if You Can. My guest today is Tommy "The Matchmaker" Curtis, and he's back from Hollywood. Tommy, welcome to Our Town. Tommy Curtis: All of that is because of you, sir. I got to tell you, this is the man that discovered me. A Ockershausen: You can't blame me for that, Tommy. Tommy Curtis: It is, it's true. A Ockershausen: You are Hollywood royalty. Your family, they must have had great roots in New York, where your family's originally from. Correct? Tommy Curtis: Exactly. My grandfather was Gentleman Jack Cohn, and my uncle was the, what do you call it? I don't want to say hated, but the very controversial Harry Cohn. A Ockershausen: Harry Cohn. Tommy Curtis: He was King Cohn A Ockershausen: A studio mogul. Tommy Curtis: Right. A Ockershausen: The first time I ever heard the word, mogul, it was about Harry Cohn. Tommy Curtis: Gentleman Jack, they argued consistently over the years, because he was the business end, and King Cohn was this guy that was actually, they say- A Ockershausen: The creative part of the business? Tommy Curtis: Yeah. You know what? In the movie, The Godfather, the legend is that was my uncle Harry's horse, in his bed. A Ockershausen: Is that correct? Tommy Curtis: Because he gave the part to Sinatra in From Here to Eternity, that made Sinatra's career. That's the story, I understand. That's a myth, or whatever. A Ockershausen: Yeah, but it's a good story. Tommy Curtis: Yeah. A Ockershausen: That's unusual to have the business side in New York and the creative side in Hollywood. Tommy Curtis: Exactly. A Ockershausen: Your family was the New York side. Tommy Curtis: Right. A Ockershausen: You've got so much to talk about, Tommy, but I ran into your name the first time when you were running for the office. I don't know whether it was the school board or something with the city, and you had a place called Wayne’s Love on K street. I couldn't believe it. I said, "Here's the guy, a saloon owner, wants to be on the school board. What is this all about?" Tommy Curtis: May I just say one thing about that? John F. Kennedy's grandfather, Honey-Fitz, was a saloon owner too. I used that all the time in those days. I said, "Well, it's not that bad." Don't forget, I did go to Yale, so I'm not completely- A Ockershausen: You're a Yale man. Tommy Curtis: I'm a Yale man. That was the little castle on K street; you're right. A Ockershausen: What a great place thought. K street was beginning to come alive then, right? Tommy Curtis: Right. Of course. A Ockershausen: The city was beginning to come alive.

When you are born into your family, it comes with certain coding and we all seem to start to follow in the pathway of your parents. What happens when your parents are Hollywood Royalty and their BFF’s are Red Skelton and Ronald Reagan and your un-official godfather is Frank Sinatra? Well, we will find out and talk to Cynthia’s longtime client, friend and mentor Stephen Simon, the godfather of Spiritual Cinema and author of the newly published book “Bringing Back the Old Hollywood” available at www.TheOldHollywood.com. This is a show not to be missed! ABOUT OUR SPECIAL GUEST: Stephen Simon was born into a successful Hollywood family. His father, S. Sylvan Simon, was a producer/director who made films with stars such as Abbott and Costello, Lana Turner, and Red Skelton. He worked as both a producer and an executive at Columbia Pictures under the legendary Harry Cohn, producing films such as Born Yesterday, the 1950 film that garnered a Best Actress Oscar for star Judy Holliday. Sylvan Simon died when Stephen was four years old, an event which compelled Frank Sinatra to become Stephen’s “godfather”. Stephen’s mother Harriet remarried Armand Deutsch, a film producer at MGM who produced films with stars such as Robert Taylor, James Stewart, and Grace Kelly. Armand Deutsch adopted Stephen, changing the young boy’s last name to Deutsch. In 1996, Stephen legally changed his name back to Simon. He went on to produce Academy Award nominee, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, the cult classic SOMEWHERE IN TIME, and produced and directed INDIGO and CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD and co-founded THE SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE.
