Elegant. That was the adjective used by Team Vintage Sand's own Michael Edmund to describe why the films of Joseph Losey are so important to him, and why he has been such a huge fan of Losey's for nearly all of his film-going life. Losey's was a name that seemed to keep popping up in a wide variety of contexts over the course of the podcast, so, after many delays, we are proud to present Episode 54—Director's Cut: Joseph Losey. Losey's is a unique career in the sense that it really was two distinct careers. After growing up in a life of privilege in Wisconsin (where he was a high school classmate of another pretty good director, Nicholas Ray) and an education at Harvard and Dartmouth, Losey made his way to Hollywood and directed a couple of interesting, low-budget films. Among these were the stilted but prescient "The Boy with Green Hair" (1948), and the rather senseless remake of Lang's "M" (1951), the latter replete with awful soundtrack music and LA sunshine. One possible reason that Losey might have gotten involved with this misguided effort might have been to give actors (Luther Adler, Martin Gabel) and other creatives (screenwriter Waldo Salt), who had been or were about to be blacklisted, a shot at getting some work. Losey himself, an unapologetic member of the Communist Party and an important creative associate of Bertolt Brecht, knew that when Brecht was called before HUAC, it was only a matter of time before he would meet the same fate. So before he could be summoned, he fled to London, and never again worked in the United States for the remaining three decades of his life. He began his English period with some low budget films, some of which, like 1954's "The Sleeping Tiger", still hold some interest. It was during this period, however, that he met two men who were going to help him create the reputation that he still carries to this day, that of a director of great style whose films, not surprisingly given his own life experience, were always political without ever dealing directly with politics: the actor Dirk Bogarde, and the legendary playwright Harold Pinter. Their first work together, 1963's "The Servant", is generally regarded as Losey's masterpiece. It is an absolute evisceration of a rotting class system that has yet to realize its time has passed and that the empire on which it was founded has disintegrated. The complex, ever-changing relationship between upper class twit Tony (the wonderful James Fox) and Barrett, the manservant Tony hires (Bogarde), is cold, chilling and surprising right to the very end. Losey continued his obsession with social class in the World War I drama "King and Country" (1964), a film with a setup similar to "Paths of Glory" that in some ways is an even more powerful anti-war statement than Kubrick's film. Losey teamed up again, somewhat less successfully, with Pinter and Bogarde for 1967's "Accident", and with Pinter for one more masterpiece, 1971's "The Go-Between", a gorgeous period piece featuring pitch-perfect performances by Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, newcomer Dominic Guard as the titular young man, and especially by the never-more-luminous Julie Christie. There are no easy answers when it comes to Losey, but two things come to mind. As John notes in the episode, had Losey not fled persecution and stayed in America, he probably would have been nothing more than a more-talented-than-average studio hack. Exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him, and it may be a direct result of his outsider status that Losey was able to cast an even sharper eye on the follies and perils of the dying English class system more effectively even than the great native British directors of the 1960's. Whatever your thoughts on his work, in the end, it is that aforementioned elegance and intelligence that make Losey's best films worth watching today.

Losey was blacklisted in 1952, after his name was mentioned during the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings. He subsequently relocated to London, where he had a second (and admittedly more artistically accomplished) life as a film director, collaborating, mostly notably, with the Nobel Prize–winning playwright and screenwriter, Harold Pinter.

On Thursday, Penn State football held their annual max testing day open to the media. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel were at Holuba Hall to take in the sights and sounds. Pickel starts by giving you his general impressions of the day and the environment in the makeshift weight room. Penn State is undergoing major renovations to its weight-lifting facility, so the team set up a makeshift quarter in Holuba Hall. What did Pickel think of the situation, and how the team responded? Next, he gives you who he thought was notable during the lifting session. T-Frank then brings up two freshmen in running back Nick Singleton and defensive tackle Zane Durant. New strength coach Chuck Losey singled out two players as having exceptional winter conditioning workouts among the first-year players. Then, he asks Greg to fill listeners in on what Losey had to say about the young quarterbacks who enrolled in January. T-Frank follows up with his impressions of the young gunslingers during his evaluation process. He thinks what Losey said should give fans even more hope about the future of five-star quarterback Drew Allar. Next, Pickel fills T-Frank in on what he saw from Penn State's injured or absent players in 2021. Hakeem Beamon, Adisa Isaac, and PJ Mustipher were all at the liftings session, and Pickel gave his thoughts about what they looked like in that setting. While the details about Mustipher's injury aren't precise, T-Frank thinks he has a good idea of the timeline for his return based on what he saw on Thursday. They shift to the young defensive linemen that lifted on Thursday because T-Frank spent a good bit of time watching them lift. Fatorma Mulbah and Jordan van den Berg both drew praise from Losey, and T-Frank now thinks they can be contributors this spring at the tackle position. Along with his observations of Amin Vanover's build, that gives some insight into the depth and talent this spring. However, Pickel disagrees and gives his reason why. After that, they shift to Penn State's young offensive line and discuss Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall. How did they look? T-Frank and Pickel discuss what they saw from each. Finally, they wrap up the show with a preview of the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament, which is coming up this weekend. Penn State may be the favorite to win the tournament, but Pickel thinks it won't be a walk in the park. He details the areas that Penn State needs to get support, the key wrestlers, and highlights matchups that everyone should hope they get to see in the finals. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices. Penn State football started winter workouts this week, and several players are already drawing praise for their performance. Host Thoma Frank Carr and senior Editor for Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer, discuss that and more on the show. They start by discussing praise from new strength and conditioning coordinator Chuck Losey for Clifford's work during the speed session of winter workouts. Losey mentioned Clifford's training app and how the sixth-year senior is performing at a standout level in a Tweet from earlier in the week. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the merits of this praise and how it may seem familiar to Penn State fans. However, they also explain why it's still valid and essential. After that, T-Frank explains why it also makes an uphill task for the young quarterbacks to unseat Clifford as the starter. From there, they discuss Penn State running back Nick Singleton's newest award and how his presence along with the development of some other young offensive players could infuse hope in fans for next season. Does Bauer agree? T-Frank singles out two players that can change the trajectory of the Penn State running game for their unique skills. Next, they discuss a social media post from sports personality Taylor Rooks. Rooks commented on Rams receiver Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this week, which resonated with Penn State football players. Does situation determine everything in football? The guys debate the merits of her comments and then give examples of both positive and negative situations that affected Penn State players last season. T-Fank cautions about applying this thought liberally to football for an important reason. Finally, they look at the players that are participants in the 2022 Senior Bowl as of recording. While more are still expected to come, T-Frank and Nate discuss which players have the most to gain from their participation in the week of practices, culminating in the Senior Bowl game on February 5th. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Learn more about your ad choices.
