In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with Tiffany Brar, founder of Jyothirgamaya Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala that trains blind people of all ages in Braille, mobility, basic computer use, and life skills. Tiffany, who became blind as an infant due to oxygen toxicity, completed her primary education in England where she found an inclusive setup, doing things like other sighted children with a special resource person dedicated to her. But when her father was posted back to India, Tiffany found school difficult as she experienced segregation and isolation from students and teachers. After completing her Bachelors in English literature from Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, she started working for Braille without Borders as a telephone operator. Later she pursued her B.Ed in special education (visual impairment) after which she began running the Jyothirgamaya (meaning "leading to light") mobile school for the blind. In 2020 Tiffany, became the first Indian to receive Holman Prize from the US-based organization LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Penny served for 22 years in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and Royal Navy, reaching the rank of commander. She was the first woman to hold the position of naval barrister. She was medically discharged from the Royal Navy in 1999 after her eyesight deteriorated and she created Disability Dynamics to help other people with disabilities to start a business. In 2009, she was awarded an OBE for her service to the disabled. In 2017, she was one of the three winners of the 2017 Holman prize for Blind Ambition, an international award for blind people with ambition. In 2018 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by London Middlesex University. She has an online baking project called Baking Blind where she shows people how she cooks and encourages others to test their limits even if they have disabilities. We met old friend Emily Trepanier, now aka Starfish, as children, at a camp for the blind in Ontario. Kerry met Maxwell Ivey, now known as The Blind Blogger, online, through a LinkedIn community for writers and bloggers in 2014 and this is his full premier on our show. And how did this fellow Ontario friend/now a BC newcomer and a Texan/prior carnival worker and amusement park ride broker connect in the first place? They met, both participating in something along the lines of Shark Tank or Dragon's Den for blind entrepreneurs and dreamers of all kinds. Despite both making it to the semi final round of the Holman Prize competition, they both did not win the ultimate prize. And yet, they may just have found something to be just as beneficial for them both. On this week's episode, we speak with Emily and Max about how they connected and why, more on the What's Your Excuse network and what the hope is with that, and Emily shares more on her new podcast on the network, Shredding For Gold, a show about her journey to compete in the Winter Paralympics as a visually impaired snowboarder. Max has always loved a challenge and some of the things he hopes to do with the WYExcuse network are, for hosts, to give a purpose, to teach marketable employment skills (people with disabilities have barriers to this), and to have a platform or can work to create one, to turn a podcast into a business or tool for one. Emily explains more about Para snowboarding being added in 2014, while her particular classification (visually impaired) is not yet, though she is in for the fight to get it included with the International Paralympic Committee. She hints at more in the works, can't say more right now, but, nonetheless, , swears that exciting things are happening in the sport. Max is already the host of the What's Your Excuse Show and now, Emily is the brand new host of what she's named Shredding For Gold, a podcast on her life and goals and activities while training as a snowboarder. As well, with this show she hopes to highlight the work of others in the adaptive sports arena, along with coaches and trainers from across Canada and internationally and to highlight her sport and its inclusion in the Paralympic Games by featuring the hard work of others, both athletes and supporters, with the ultimate goal of creating more awareness of adaptive sports and her love of snowboarding. So thanks to a blind traveler, adventurer, and dreamer from the distant past, James Holman (1786-1857), the teaming up of Maxwell and Emily is paying off for them both in the 21st century. She may be a Canadian who is not so smooth on skates, but she's a pro, at this point, on skis and her board. Along with Max's help, it's all downhill for Emily now. And that's a good thing. You can find the What's Your Excuse Network and links to both Emily's Shredding For Gold podcast and Max's What's Your Excuse? Show here: https://wyexcuse.com/shows/ (also available on Apple and other podcast platforms) Check out Emily's former appearance on Outlook from back in September of 2019: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/outlook-2019-09-02-team-starfish-feat-future-paralympian/id1527876739?i=1000488226516 And to learn more on who James Holman was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Holman

Professor Mona Minkara is a recipient of the 2019 Holman Prize and thanks to the prestigious award, she was able to embark on journey around the globe and show everyone what it’s like to travel independently as a blind person.  In her travel show: 'Planes, Trains, and Canes' Mona takes us along as she experiences five cities, faces challenges, overcomes obstacles, and sheds light on issues that blind and visually-impaired individuals face day-to-day in a society that is designed to exclude them. RNIB Connect Radio's Paulina Kuchorew spoke with the Blind Traveller herself to hear why independent travel and discovering public transport all over the world, can be an adventure in itself. Before Pauline Dowell became legally blind in her 40s she was an artist who loved to sail. After her diagnosis, she needed time to get used to things, but she wasn't willing to let go of the things she loved.  In the latest Dangerous Vision episode, Pauline talks with Randy Cohen about her love of sailing.  From a casual sail around Boston Harbor to competitive regattas Pauline shares with Randy her decision to stay in the game.  Since she loved sailing so much she decided to make a life choice that she lives with every day.  She lives in Boston Harbor on her sailboat that she shares with her guide dog Dora. Pauline credits the Carroll Center in Boston and Courage Sailing's Blind sailing instructions for giving her the training and confidence to set sail. Pauline inspires others to sail as well.  In 2019 she was a finalist for the Holman Prize, an international prize created to change perceptions about what blind people are capable of doing. Pauline is creating the first all woman's blind sailing team set to compete in the Newport to Bermuda Regatta. She encourages everyone who may be going through similar challenges to just go out in the world and find what’s out there! You can help Jordie with her Holman Prize pitch by going to her Youtube video and clicking like Thank-you so much for your support with this. Rationale My dream is to record a CD featuring works by blind composers, Australian composers, and works that are more familiar. I plan to travel to my pianist Penny Cashman in Adelaide for rehearsals, to the UK later in the year for coachings with specialists in the classical music field, and to record the finished product in Melbourne at Move Records studios. Feature works include First Person Feminine by Ian Cooper who was blind, and mentored me as a young singer. Also a work called Normality by Dindy Vaughan who wrote the work as a commission for soprano, flute, violin and piano. It challenges the concept of “what is normal” in a humourous way. I also plan to record works by Spanish composer Rodrigo who was also blind, and other familiar composers such as Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Duparc. This CD will be a showcase of repertoire to share my voice with a much wider audience. I love to sing works that tell a story. This is a chance to collaborate with Penny and other musicians to express these concepts. I also hope to use this album as a vehicle to audition for conductors and increase my profile as a professional singer. Bio Music is my first love. I also love animals and have worked with three beautiful labrador guide dogs and relish the freedom of movement they bring. Technology is another passion for me and I like to keep abreast with new developments in braille and audio devices. I am a Choral Scholar with Christ Church South Yarra. Other singing endeavours are finalist in the International Competition for Blind and Partially Sighted Musicians in Prague, the 2012 recipient of the Maroondah Singers Memorial Scholarship and a finalist in the 2013 Australian National Liederfest. I also play piano and teach music, braille music and singing to both young children and adults. Alongside my singing, I work as a music transcriber and music teacher. I have chaired the Australian Braille authority for four years, and work with the International Council on English Braille as chair of the music braille committee.

Now let’s jump into the news Section to see what we have prepared for you: This year CES 2020 was occupied by many more assistive technology vendors than on the previous CES events, which is absolutely a positive sign. Therefore we selected a few of the most interesting products which were shown for general public: First Braille tablet shown at CES 2020 While we don’t have too much technical information about the Tactile Pro, it is great to see that such devices are slowly getting into the mainstream and that braille as the most important form of written form for blind people is being updated into new device. Hap2Phone Allows Users to Feel Objects in Photos on Their Touchscreens Hap2U, a haptics developer specialized in integrating sensory intelligence into tactile surfaces, will unveil Hap2Phone, the world’s first haptic smartphone display, at CES 2020. While this device isn’t made for the end consumers, the concept of such a device might be very interesting for System integrators and OEM manufacturers. OrCam Announces New AI Hearing Device and Handheld AI Reader at CES 2020 OrCam is a known vendor from Israel. This time they decided to expand their product line towards the users with Hearing and reading problems with 2 new products. We don’t know what  the price of the products will be yet, however this does not mean that you should not visit their Stand on the upcoming assistive tech events such as the Sight City 2020 where you can try their products directly. W3C Launches an Introduction to Web Accessibility Free Online Course in Cooperation with UNESCO IITE On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) announced the launch of the online course built on the W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) open curricula with international expert trainers from W3C Member organizations. [The MOOC begins on January 20, 2020.] How to make museums more accessible for disabled people? Ask them The Arches project took place in 6 different museums across Europe for the last 3 years and they came up with really interesting results which Pawel represented to us in the podcast. This time we prepared really cool news for visually impaired musicians: Building Raspberry Pi Smart Guitar for Blind, Deaf and Mute Musicians This really cool Instrument combines various tech solutions built into one device, allowing the users with seeing, Hearing or speech problems to use it as they wish. The users can choose to receive the information via built in small Display, read the information via built in braille Display or choose the built in buttons for going through the menus in the guitar, in case the users have speech problems which they can read thru the built in Display or hear it thru the built in Speaker. Avid and Berklee College of Music Team Up to Deliver Innovative Accessibility Features for Visually Impaired Music Creators Musicians who are visually impaired finally can get really excited, because Sibelius will become much more accessible for Jaws, NVDA and Voice over users in the near future. That means that the Level of integration will be much improved for students and musicians who need to utilize Sibelius for composing on the daily bases. For many years visually impaired community was struggling with accessibility of Sibelius which is in todays world one of the main tools used for composing and arranging, and it looks like that this will finally change. VIEWS International published the results of the VIPTech project, and Bart gave us more info about it. Google Assistant Now Has Interpreter Mode on Android and iOS Devices We checked live in the podcast if the feature Works for the smartphones, and the result was very positive. Than we also checked if the same feature is available on the Android smartwatches, but weren’t sucsessful in getting it to work. That means that the smartwatch users will have to wäit a bit longer untill the interpretor arrives. However we were able to talk about another cool feature which allows all the users of Google Assistant to check their local air quality. IN order to activate it, just say “Talk to Air Quality Index”. After that the assistant will ask you for your location permmition, and after a few seconds you will get the results from the closest air quality measuring station. If you would like to contact Jennifer, you can visit her website for more information. Peggy is back with “Let’s Eat,” and this time she’s talking about cauliflower, which is much more versatile than you might think. Lisa closes out the podcast by sharing some helpful tips for finding older episodes and playing podcasts online. Cauliflower recipes shared by Peggy: Miracle Mashies One 12-oz. russet potato 3 cups cauliflower florets 3 tbsp. fat-free half & half 1 tbsp. light whipped butter or light buttery spread 1/4 tsp. salt, or more to taste Optional seasoning: black pepper 2 tbsp. sour cream Directions Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Meanwhile, peel and cube potato. Add cauliflower and cubed potato to boiling water. Once returned to a boil, reduce heat to medium. Cook until potatoes and cauliflower are very tender, 15 to 20 minutes, (or microwave for five to six minutes.) Drain and transfer cauliflower and potato to a large bowl. Add half & half, sour cream, butter, and salt. Thoroughly mash and mix. You can mix in a blender. Enjoy 5-Ingredient Cauliflower “Fried Rice” Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 10 min Yield: 4 servings Recipe by: Christina from The Blissful Balance This healthy spin on "Fried Rice" is the perfect side dish to any meal. INGREDIENTS 1 head cauliflower 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables 3 Eggland’s Best eggs (large), scrambled 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce, or more as you need PREPARATION Clean and chop cauliflower head into florets. In batches, using your food processor, pulse until ‘rice’ is formed. In a large saute pan over medium heat, add olive oil. Add in cauliflower and vegetables. Cook for about ten minutes, or until fragrant. Add in eggs and cook, stirring together until well-combined. When eggs are cooked, turn off the heat. Serve topped with sesame seeds, fresh cilantro, or chopped scallions. Cauliflower pizza Ingredients 1 head cauliflower, stalk removed 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella 1/4 cup grated Parmesan 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 2 eggs, lightly beaten Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Break the cauliflower into florets and pulse in a food processor until fine. Steam in a steamer basket and drain well. (I like to put it on a towel to get all the moisture out.) Let cool. In a bowl, combine the cauliflower with the mozzarella, Parmesan, oregano, salt, garlic powder and eggs. Transfer to the center of the baking sheet and spread into a circle, resembling a pizza crust. Bake for 20 minutes. Add desired toppings and bake an additional 10 minutes.
