Renowned artist Liz Bucheit's exhibition "Hand of Huldra" showcases the tradition of silver as protection against evil, blending myth and craftsmanship. Alison Aune is a professor of art education at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and a former board member at the Nordic Center. She recommends a show currently at the Nordic Center, “Hand of Huldra” by Liz Bucheit of Lanesboro.“What she specializes in is reimagining Norwegian folk tales, folk traditions, through her contemporary jewelry,” Aune explains.“In Norway — and in a lot of the Nordic and Baltic countries — silver was thought to protect you against evil. So there's a tradition with the bride wearing a bridal crown of silver, having all sorts of silver pendants so that she's protected.”On display are crowns, as well as other silver objects, which Aune describes as “phenomenal. She's just really an expert on taking those Norwegian stories and finding their way to jewelry.”“Hand of Huldra” is on display until April 27.Celebrating NowruzJoin the Twin Cities Iranian Culture Collective for a vibrant celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, at the Ordway in St. Paul. Nowruz is the Persian New Year, which was celebrated on March 19. The concert includes both international and local musicians and will be followed by a reception afterward that includes tea and cookies. Amjati says the concert will be a chance to celebrate and also to honor and mourn alongside those women struggling for rights in Iran. She notes that two of the singers recently moved from Iran to the U.S., and she looks forward to hearing their voices.  “Voices Unveiled: A Nowruz Celebration and Community Gathering” is Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ordway in St. Paul. Tickets are limited. A tragicomedy journey Embark on a poignant yet uplifting journey with "Phantom Loss," a puppet show by Oanh Vu, staged by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre in Minneapolis. Join a Vietnamese American girl in a tale of haunting, friendship with ghosts and the struggles of generational trauma and deportation. Anh-Thu Pham of Theater Mu has seen previous workshops of Oanh Vu's puppet show “Phantom Loss,” and she's looking forward to seeing the final version staged by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre in Minneapolis. It's a tragicomedy about a Vietnamese American girl who moves to a new small town with her mother to run a nail salon. The house where she lives is haunted, and she becomes friends with the ghost. It's a refugee story about generational trauma and deportation, told with heart and humor. Pham, who grew up watching “Sesame Street” and “Mr. Rogers,” points out the power of puppetry to take on heavy subjects without losing sight of joy.  “I think, for any of us that have dealt with generational trauma, or any hard things in our lives,” says Pham, “if you sit in the darkness, you won't be able to live, you won't be able to process through that. And I think that's when good art is done: you kind of see and experience life in its wholeness. I think this is what ‘Phantom Loss' can do.” The show opens Friday with a preview show Thursday, and it runs through April 7. There is a pay-what-you-can performance on April 2. The show is rated PG/PG-13.

In Scandinavian and Germanic folklore, the huldra are beautiful creatures that live in seductive forests. Their name, which literally means "covered," is believed to be due to the way they try to hide their mystical nature. In most folk tales, the huldra were only interested in sex and dancing. Even these stories have unhappy endings as the men would later grow mad because they spent too much time with the Huldra or the Elven people. Most Norse folklore refers to the huldra as a type of "ra," which literally means "nature's keepers."The havsfru or aquatic sjörå are considered to be the ancestors of the mermaid myth, and they are related to the Huldra. Following the adoption of Christianity in Scandinavia and Germany, a new origin myth about the huldra emerged. It states that God once owned a cottage, but he only had time to wash half of his children. A woman was said to have tried to hide her children, but God saw them and decided that they were not human. The children were then called huldras. All across Germany and Scandinavia, there is a common belief that the huldra are beautiful blonde women who wander around human settlements. Tall and slender, with long golden hair and a crown made out of flowers, these women are known to appear in front of lone young men. Huldras are different from human women in that they have hollow backs or tails that stick out from their robes or dresses. The hulders try to hide their tail when they are performing their tricks, but in most myths, young men are given the opportunity to react to it.Huldras who have lost their hollow back and tail would often dance a rune dance. In the mornings, you would often see what looked like a witch circle in the forest or near swamps. These beautiful women were known to live in areas affected by moss, and they were often seen wearing white clothes and blonde hair. They would dance on top of burial mounds during thick mist. The Danish version of the Huldra is missing its cow tail and hollow back due to the various folk tales that have been told about them. There are only a few places where you can find this characteristic in the lore.Read more at https://mythlok.com/huldra/

In this chapter, we finish The Subtle Knife (kinda - Patreon episode on the appendix & lantern slides to follow)! Will and Lyra continue up the mountain, urged on by the alethiometer. Will's hand has still not healed and in this final chapter he is at the brink physically and emotionally.Join us as we chat ancient Greek weapons, ‘love' the whole hell-hath-no-fury story line and get skeptical about Boreal's susceptibility to obvious manipulation.------Spoiler warnings for His Dark Materials and some tiny part of The Book of Dust, but we highly recommend checking out Lo's article on the witches of HDM and Scandinavian folklore here.Learn some basics about the Makhaira here. Not heard of this Eve person?

Ina Wroldsen: HEX The Podcast

“MINE” is a devious word. Its small, narrow and kind of petty. It can be devastating when used in the wrong way. It’s a word that describes something that we are not really willing to share. It’s a word that brings me back to school and child play, a word that symbolises complete ownership. It’s a word we all use way too much, without even realising the power behind those four little letters. MINE. I wrote the song MINE about my husband Mark. The Scandinavian folklore character, Huldra, is beautiful temptress who lives amongst the trees, luring unsuspecting boys and men away from their families just so she can keep them and make them hers. She symbolises the gap that separates you from what used to be yours. This is why Huldra is a perfect analogy for MINE.The word “Mine” is a basic lie. Nothing really belongs to us. Mine is a man made concept.MINE from the HEX EP is out nowTrack: https://smarturl.it/IW_MineMusic Video: https://smarturl.it/InaWroldsenMineVideo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

There has been a breach of one of the ancient taboos. Uldo, a young goblin from the barbarian village of Lobaram, has in an attempt to prove himself worthy decided to guide a group of Ambrian explorers into one of the ancient ruins in the forest of Davokar.  Knowing that these ruins are grounds tabooed by the Huldra, his older brother, Uhuglas, who has been honored with title of the chieftain's personal guard, is very ashamed of his brother's actions. He, along with the village witch, Algaya, has decided to take things into their own hands in order to try and stop Uldo… before it's too late.  Together with Algaya's fierce animal familiar, the boar Mortia, they have travelled for a few days in to the depths of the forest. However, there has been no sign of the rascal Uldo and the Ambrian company. Now Uhuglas, Algaya and Mortia are standing at the outskirts of the ruins, the ancient grounds where no one from the tribes have set foot, with the risk of suffering heavy corruption from whatever dark force might be lurking in there.
