Protest movements have broken out against the oppressive regimes in Iran and China. Young Iranians posted their reasons for rebelling under the hashtag Baraye, meaning “because” and the singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour compiled many of these reasons into a song of the same title that has become an anthem of the Iranian movement and an inspiration to those fighting for freedom around the world. One line in particular stands out. Young people are rebelling because of their “yeaning for an ordinary life”—for the opportunity to lead lives of the sort many around the world take for granted. By historical standards such “ordinary lives” are extraordinary, and indeed the way of living that freedom fighters long for has not been fully realized, even in the freest and most prosperous societies. It is a way of life that is demanded by human nature, such that the best among us and the best within us yearn for it, often without being able to define it or chart a course towards it. In this talk, Dr. Brook articulates the object of this yearning, discusses how it animates the movements in Iran and China, and draws implications for the fight for freedom in these countries and around the world.Recorded on January 26, 2023 at at Crum Auditorium, University of Texas - Austin, Austin, TX.10:00 Intro10:20 Iranian protest song Baraye12:50 Death of Mahsa Amini starting protests in Iran19:18 Protests in China28:24 Exodus from Cuba, Russia and Venezuela30:04 Price paid by the protesters36:24 Yearning for an Ordinary Life40:34 Why do we have freedom? 44:55 What happened 250 years ago?47:30 Reason, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/reason.html49:27 Individualism, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/individualism.html 49:55 What is Freedom?, see http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/freedom.html52:32 Enlightenment55:40 Noble cause for freedomLive Questions:59:41 Israeli–Palestinian conflict1:02:29 Western companies doing business in China1:10:48 Western press coverage of those uprisings1:16:37 Fall of the Berlin Wall1:21:44 Silence towards Iran1:22:42 Civil Rights Movement1:28:56 Moral culpability of US1:30:34 Covid lockdowns1:33:21 Self-esteem1:37:10 Is freedom necessary progression of any society?1:41:55 Property rights1:45:21 Way to improve western system1:50:10 Minority neighborhoods1:52:10 How to influence political decisions?1:56:00 OutroShow is Sponsored by Ayn Rand University https://university.aynrand.org/ as well as by https://www.expressvpn.com/yaron & https://www.fountainheadcasts.comJoin this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/@YaronBrook/joinLike what you hear?
Wendy is still battling sickness post-Covid, but we made the most of her energy to cover the Georgia midterms, the NY Times Iran headline that needed a deeper dive, and updates on China's Covid regulations. Before the good news corner, we share some Trump headlines, the sad news of a Sesame Street neighbor passing, and much much more.
On today's "Freedom Friday" episode, Tara and Stephanie talk about the protests taking place throughout China, sparked by the government's zero-COVID lockdown policies, which resulted in the deaths of several people who were unable to escape an apartment fire. They also address the ongoing protests taking place in Iran over the past few months, due to the controversial death of a 22-year old woman who was arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly, brutally beaten, and then died in the custody of Iranian law enforcement.

This episode is dedicated to the plight of the brave women currently fighting for their rights in Iran, and it is a real honour to be joined by the actress and activist, Nazanin Boniadi and to shine a light on the voices of Nazanin's homeland, Iran. Last month, 22 year old Mahsa Amini, died whilst being detained by the ‘morality police' in Iran for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly. Peaceful protests have erupted in the wake of her death with women symbolically cutting their hair and burning headscarves on the streets. This is one of the first major female-led revolutions in the world, and it is even more remarkable when you consider many of them are of school age and young people. It is the boldest challenge to the Islamic Republic since its establishment in 1979, and sadly it is estimated that 222 people have been killed in the widespread demonstrations at the hands of the oppressive regime in Iran. With the internet cut off in Iran, we need to make sure the voices of the brave protestors are heard, and as an ambassador for Amnesty international, Nazanin is doing exactly that in this episode. After visiting the White House to speak to Vice President Kamala Harris, Nazanin joins us to emotionally talk about the stories she is hearing from Iran. Nazanin also discusses how we can all be allies to Iranian people right now and how her character, Bronwyn in Amazon Prime's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV show is a symbol of the strength of Iranian women. I hope you will be just as inspired by Nazanin as I am and if you can help the brave people of Iran right now, Nazanin recommends the following: 1. There isn't any domestic avenues for justice in Iran and Amnesty International has launched a global action, calling on people to sign a petition targeting UN member states. You can find the petition here: www.amnesty.org/en/petition/end-the-protest-bloodshed-in-iran2. Please amplify the voices of the Iranian people by sharing information from reliable organisations and activists using the hashtags #MahsaAmini and #IranProtests. 3. Donate to credible, Iran-focused human rights organizations that document and report rights abuses, such as Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA), Abdorrahman Boroumand Center and Amnesty International Iran. 4. With the internet curtailed in Iran please visit apps like Toosheh that help Iranians gain internet access and avoid censorship through VPN servers. Visit the site here: https://www.toosheh.org/ Thank you so much for listening and please join us in sending all of our love and support to the brave people of Iran at this time. Love, Josh x
We've got a personal episode this week with Ellie, Alia, and Nadia! A lot of the discussion focuses on one particularly eventful day for Alia and Nadia that included: Alia attending a protest in solidarity with Iranian women's rights, along with some friends from Iran, who discussed how optimism and political energy varies across micro-generations. The puppet/public art project Walk With Amal, which was heartwarming, but also brought up complicated feelings about the need for art to create empathy towards refugees. The documentary Sirens about the Lebanese all women thrash metal band Slave to Sirens, which was both beautiful in…

Women in Iran are leading an unprecedented movement for human rights. Protests have broken out across the country following the death of 22-year old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the Islamic Republic's morality police for allegedly violating the country's strict dress code for women. As a proud Iranian-American, Neagheen comes to BFBA to talk about what's happening in Iran, why it's so important, and how to show solidarity with the freedom fighters. Woman. Life. Freedom. #mahsaamini #iranprotests *** Two most important things each of us can do to support freedom fighters in Iran: 1) Keep coverage of their protests alive! Repost and reshare stories using the hashtags #MahsaAmini and #IranProtests. 2) Help Iranians bypass internet censorship by downloading the Snowflake extension. Stefan Verstappen, The Survivalist on the 3 staples you should stockpile for long term storage. Internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Steve Turley talks about Italy and Sweden moving to the right and the threat of nuclear war if Ukraine attacks with the west. As the Iranian regime continues to crack down on protests and protesters, they are now shutting down huge sections of the internet in hopes to disrupt people from trading ideas or planning new protests. The action by the ayatollah and his henchman is only the latest human rights violation the regime has allegedly committed. After a young woman died in police custody over not wearing a Hijab in Iran, the people of the country have taken to the streets in protest. Not only have they taken to the streets, but they have engaged in other forms of civil unrest such as attacking police officers and lighting cars on fire. The government, of course, has been accused of using lethal force against the protestors and have been condemned for it on the world stage. As usual however, the Iranian government is deaf to criticism and continues to beat, murder and arrest their own people for speaking out against the government.
