The icons of the sixties are physically leaving us, one by one. My intentions are to keep their music alive. The music of the 60s especially was unique and many of the albums that contained those tunes have endured a half century or more, just begging to jump onto a turntable so the stylus can be gently placed into the endless groove and be played and appreciated. Or hated. There are so many songs I despise, even though they were great, they got overplayed on commercial radio. I'm trying very diligently to hold off on repeating any songs, though I feel some are so worth repeating. This is probably the 4th time I've played Wooden Ships but why not with such a great tune with Stephen Stills' signature guitar solo and great lyrics that make you wonder about so much. I give this hour to Croz and encourage you to explore his compositions and especially his latest works, solo and with his son, James Raymond, guitarist Jeff Pevar in the group CPR. Enjoy! HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLEIF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME by David Crosby (1971, Atlantic)The Reaper continues its rampage, cutting swathes across the aging population of musical pioneers. Last week it was Jeff Beck, yesterday David Crosby. In fairness, it was actually amazing that the Croz lived as long as he did. He had diabetes, and In 1994 underwent a liver transplant (paid for by Phil Collins), after suffering for years with Hep C. But despite a notorious reputation for drug abuse that would cripple even a hardened junkie, David kept forging an unfettered path, making enemies with his thoughtless taunts, enduring break ups and reunions, yet still creating some of our greatest music with his frenemies, solo, and for the last mile in collaboration with his long-abandoned and rediscovered son, James Raymond.David Van Cortland Crosby, the son of Academy Award Winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby, was a California boy who became foundational to the California folk-rock soundtrack of our generation, and despite the fact that near the end of his life he had to stay on the road and sell his catalogue to pay off his mortgage, those songs will reside forever in the Laurel Canyon canon. Crosby was a notoriously difficult character who burnt nearly every bridge he ever crossed. His bandmate from the Byrds, Jim McGuinn steadfastly refused to work with him again despite David's constant imprecations to reunite; he boldly dissed and insulted Neil Young's soul-mate Darryl Hannah after the death of Neil's first wife Pegi, and somehow alienated his biggest supporter in life, Graham Nash. But, despite this, musician Melissa Etheridge solicited his sperm to make her babies. Maybe because, trumping all the difficulty, David's harmonic acumen was unmatched and a divine gift from God. So, there he undeniably stands: a twice inducted Rock n Roll Hall of Famer for founding two of the most important groups in Rock history. And, this etherial, transcendent solo effort, recorded with the aid of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Graham Nash, along with members of The Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead represents an artist whose questing musical imagination was always and eternally of a deeply spiritual nature. Humans are so complicated. As Dylan said: “I contain multitudes,” and David Crosby was an exemplar of that.

When he was young, James Raymond knew he had a special gift for music, yet he somehow felt that this natural ability stemmed beyond what his adoptive parents and his education seemed to provide. At the age of 30, he began the arduous task of finding his birth parents. When he secured his birth certificate, the name David Crosby appeared. When James finally had a chance to meet his legendary birth father, the two of them hit it off and almost immediately started making music together, including the two, incredible CPR albums from the late 90's and early 2000's that also featured guitarist Jeff Pevar. Aside from his integral work with Crosby, James has also carved out a niche with writing, composing, and producing music for television and film, along with a collection of his own songs. His latest project found him back in the studio with David Crosby, as he produced his latest album "For Free." He wrote and co-wrote several tracks with guests Michael McDonald and Donald Fagen, contributed backing vocals, arranged horns, and played several instruments including piano, synths, and programmed drums. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome James Raymond.

David also tells a story about meeting a veteran that has stuck with him and helped inspire a song on For Free, and he also shares with Steve what he would be doing if he weren't a musician.Freak Flag Flying will return in October with two new episodes featuring David and Steve discussing David's classic album If I Could Only Remember My Name once again in the very studio where it was recorded back in 1970. Welcome to another edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast, our weekly interview show featuring artists reflecting on their creative process, history, and work. This week, counter culture icon David Crosby. Anyone familiar with his Twitter feed knows Croz is a fount of opinions and insight, capable of immense warmth and good humor, but never one to pull punches. On July 31st, he’s reissuing the catalog of CPR, his cheekily named late ’90s and early 2000s supergroup with guitarist Jeff Pevar and Crosby’s son, keyboardist James Raymond. Alongside the trio’s two studio albums, 1998’s CPR and 2001’s Just Like Gravity, two live albums, Live at Cuesta College and Live at the Wiltern (featuring guest musicians Graham Nash, Marc Cohn, and Phil Collins) round out the overview of the group that set Crosby off on a late career renaissance that continues with recent albums like 2018’s Here If You Listen. A quick note. Crosby spoke with Transmissions co-host Jason P. Woodbury as the mass Black Lives Matter that began in late May were beginning. The conversation does not reflect the remarkable events of the last few weeks. The latest issues of our Sidecar newsletter is dedicated specifically to the inspirational struggle for justice happening in the streets of America right now.
A preview of Freak Flag Flying, a new Osiris podcast featuring David Crosby in conversation with his friend, award-winning science writer Steve Silberman. These interviews cover everything from David’s earliest musical relationships with legendary peers like Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia; the years of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; his musical legacy; and his working relationship with his son, James Raymond. This is another episode of the podcast dedicated to sea angling. Our guest is James Raymond, the man behind the website Irish Angling Adventures. I had a great time talking with James about all things sea angling. As a seasoned angler myself, I could quickly tell that James is a hardcore sea angler like many of my friends. Yes, he is one of those folks who spend silly amounts of time on the shore chasing fish with a rod and line. And at Tommy’s Outdoors we love them for that! During our conversation, we discuss the secrecy of fishing marks, angling etiquette, overfishing, sea angling safety, and many other angling related issues. James also shares with us stories from his fishing trip to the Norwegian island of Vega. It is a great episode for hardcore anglers by hardcore anglers. And once you are done listening to the podcast, don’t forget to check out the Instagram page @irish_angling_adventures where you can find many inspiring angling photos. https://irishanglingadventures.com

In this episode, I have an in-depth conversation with the songwriter, composer, and independent music entrepreneur Emma Wallace. Emma Wallace has a dozen albums, EPs, and singles to her credit, including her latest, Immortal (available August 31, 2018). With over a decade of hard-fought experience building a career that supports a family of four through her music, Emma's got a lot to share about how to be a committed, steadfast, positivity-focused independent creator in the face of professional, personal, and financial challenges. No matter your creative endeavor, you'll find a lot of inspiration in her story. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Here are some of the things I talk about with Emma Wallace in this episode, including a few links to sites with which I have an affiliate relationship. I'll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you if you purchase products through those links. It's a lovely way to show your support for Sonitotum! Find out more about Emma Wallace at her website, and connect with her on Facebook and Instagram. Listen to Emma Wallace on Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, Amazon Prime Music, or anywhere music is streamed. Buy Emma Wallace music on iTunes, Amazon.com, YouTubeMusic, or anywhere else you can purchase music downloads. There's a piece of new music in this episode, heard right at the beginning and end of the interview. This "bumper" music is a little tune called "Gwinton." It's built around a bassline I cooked up while playing with my new Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD audio interface. The drums, percussion, and guitar are samples and loops found in Mixcraft 8 Pro Studio; the bass guitar is played by your host. Emma mentions the song "Nature Boy," which includes the lyric, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn | Is just to love and be loved in return." Nat "King" Cole made the song famous first, but this Kurt Elling rendition is definitive to me. Emma and I met when we both worked at Borders Books and Music in Pasadena, California, ten thousand million years ago. James Raymond is a Los Angeles-based producer, performer, and songwriter. CDBaby is perhaps the oldest online distributor of digital and tangible music. "Hey kids, let's put on a show!" is all about the DIY, can-do, up-against-it attitude exemplified by Mickey Rooney's gumption in Babes In Arms. If you have a basement, a closet, a spare room, a garage... you can and should make your thing. Emma Wallace talks about the importance of gratitude. I wrote about how gratitude can make you a better creator and a better person. The Cult of Done has a manifesto you just might want to print out and put where ever you do your creative work... and maybe where you do everything but create, too! Michael Rosenbaum's podcast is Inside of You. Listen! Get a taste of Immortal, the album from Emma Wallace released on August 31, 2018 in this video for her song "Done." What Did You Think About This Episode? What are your thoughts? Let's hear from you in the comments!

At an age when many artists are slowing down, David Crosby is speeding up! When Crosby released Croz in 2014, it had been two decades since his last solo album. But in 2016, only two years after that robust, full-band effort, the 75-year old returned with Lighthouse, an intimate, stripped-down set that highlights Crosby's instantly recognizable voice, incisive songwriting, and incomparable guitar work. “Lights twinkle, flicker, blaze and sparkle throughout David Crosby's finest solo album since his melancholy 1971 masterpiece ‘If I Could Only Remember My name' “ – Rolling Stone Now on Sept 29th 2017 comes the new masterpiece Sky Trails. Produced by James Raymond, the album features a new collection of original songs including writing collaborations with Michael McDonald, Becca Stevens & James Raymond as well as a re-imagining of a Joni Mitchell classic. Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and co-founder of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, David Crosby, is heading out on tour in Nov/Dec 2017. Joining him will be five exceptionally talented musical friends, James Raymond on keys, Mai Agan on bass, Steve DiStanislao on drums, Jeff Pevar on guitar and Michelle Willis on keys and vocals. Crosby is in the midst of an incredibly creative and powerful period and on this tour, he will be performing music from the soon to be released new album Sky Trails alongside some of his best loved songs and greatest hits. "David Crosby and his friends put on an awesome show. It was not full of glitz and glam, no fancy laser light show or costume changes, but it was packed with spot on quality, superb harmonies and awesome musicianship. Crosby's voice was as smooth as it has ever been and he was warm and charismatic." @thedavidcrosby @OfficalDavidCrosby #DavidCrosbySkyTrails #CSN #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #TMobile

It appears to be a long time since David Crosbyreleased a solo album; 20 years and counting. Croz, named for what his friends call him, is 11 tracks, some of which he wrote with his son James Raymond. It's the amalgamation of the inevitability of time passing. Crosby tells host Robin Milling that time is a theme that has run in his songs throughout his life. He also reflects on how his near death experience has impacted his life since, and where he is headed. He says, 'I think your time here on the planet is the most valuable resource you have. I came to that from having wasted a great deal of it. I wasted years and years of time just getting loaded or just getting laid or just being a crazy man.' In this candid, outspoken, provocative and blatantly honest conversation, Croz talks about debunking song myths, what drove CSNY to break up, his Woodstock memories, and where he currently stands with Neil Young to name a few topics. His rants on Twitter exemplify his need to tell it like it is which he says might be a Leo trait he's always had. No matter how much he may get in trouble for speaking his mind, the music has always been his essential means of communication which he describes as a 'lifting force on the human race.' Lifehouse © 2008 by Spider Robinson This week I'm going to read you a portion of one of the three novels contained in the LIFEHOUSE TRILOGY, available now in a single hardcover volume from Baen Books. Chapter One of the novel LIFEHOUSE, the conclusion of the trilogy which was my attempt to come up with a reason to be a good man that did not require a god with thunderbolts up his sleeve to enforce it -- what seems to me to be a rational man's substitute for religion. Warning! X-rated language! Musical selections will be performed by Colin MacDonald, David Crosby, James Raymond, and Graham Nash.
Awesome Music You May Not Know -- Yet © 2007 by Spider Robinson I love reading you fiction, I love ranting about idiocy in the news, I love rhapsodizing about the frontier called the inner solar system, and we'll get to some of that, but I believe turning people on to great music is the most fun you can have with your pants on and one of the holiest chores there is. Here is music you may not know from Spider John Koerner, David Crosby and CPR, and a couple of my own originals including the song David Crosby and I wrote for my novel Variable Star.
