Travel the last half of Route 66 with Charles James, the famous Chicago pitchman that everyone believes was killed in a plane crash. Dying, for Charles, was an eye-opener. He decides to walk from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, In The Road Home by Richard Paul Evans, readers join Charles about two hours from Amarillo, TX. Each chapter begins with a quote from the protagonist. The quotes are like chocolate chip cookies, fresh from the oven. I savored the flavors of wisdom, humor, insight, connection, and growth! Here's a sampling: “On the road again. Blisters and fatigue. Willie Nelson made it sound much nicer.” “Abandoned buildings along an abandoned road stand (barely) as a testament to the truth that nothing this side of heaven lasts forever.” “Today I came across a man I thought was killing another man. He was trying to save his life. How poor our judgment is. Too often we open our eyes wide to condemn others.” “I wrote my own Burma Shave poem: He who lives/ like he won't die/ won't find a mansion/ In the sky.” “In the oddity of today's culture, some create false battles just so they can choose a side.” “I feel like Frodo in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy–his errand more difficult, each footstep heavier, as he nears his destination.” “Don't give up. Everyone who got to where they are had to start from where they were.” As Charles helps others, he ends up helping himself. He evolves into his best self. Humility made his transformation possible. As he told the jilted Uber driver, “It is always good to process things to help us, not hurt us. Don't play the victim.” We use our challenges to grow us, move us beyond being the weak link in a relationship. The Uber driver asked Charles if he was a marriage counselor to which he replied, “No. I am a weak link.” This book will stretch you, entertain you, and impact you! Enjoy the journey, dear readers! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message

Keep those threads humming and those ideas blooming! - T&R ____________________________ Pockets & Links Seam pockets - a pocket where the opening falls along the seam line of a garment - sometimes known as a ‘Secret pocket’ because you can’t see it from the outside. Example: Vali dress by Pattern fantastique Separate in-seam pocket are where the pocket pieces are separate to the main piece and sewn on - this is what we most commonly see in sewing patterns. Example: Vogue V9075 Extension in-seam pocket is where there is an extension on the main piece and a separate seam pocket is attached to that. Example: Vogue 9511 1970's jumpsuit pattern You can do really fancy in seam pockets - where the side zip on a dress for example also has a pocket! Threads magazine has a tutorial for this: https://www.threadsmagazine.com/2022/01/19/add-a-pocket-along-a-side-seam-invisible-zipper. Front hip pockets (also known as slash pockets.) You'll see those as inserts on jeans and boilersuits/dungarees/ and certain trousers where the pocket mouth is set apart from the pocket itself, usually using a facing made out of the self-fabric of the garment. A great resource for under stitching the pocket mouth: sewing tutorial for a faced trouser pocket. https://www.thelaststitch.com/tutorial-sewing-a-faced-trouser-pocket/. Patch Pockets: - a pocket on the outside of a garment. You see this often on more workwear style garments. When you can see the full outline of the pocket on top of your garment, for example a jacket with a patch pocket. Friday pattern company has an example of this in their Ilford jacket. They also have a great description of a variety of patch pockets & free downloads of different types of patch pockets You also commonly find patch pockets on the back of jeans - of which side note - closet core has a great download of back pocket designs https://blog.closetcorepatterns.com/free-downloadable-33-back-pocket-designs/ _________________________ Jets/Welts Jets or Welts on a garment are the use of a separate piece of fabric that is visible at the opening of the pocket and creates a pleasing detail to the eye while also reinforcing the opening. They allow you to put the pocket mouth, or pocket opening, anywhere on the garment without accessing a seam line. Someone who is always chic and stylish. ------ In the mid-20th century in St. Louis, one name was always at the top of the best dressed list: Alice Topp-Lee. ——— You might say that it's no surprise to see her on the list, as she was in the fashion industry herself. Topp-Lee spent much of her career as the executive designer at Doris Dodson Dress Company, a clothing brand produced by Forest City Manufacturing here in St. Louis. The brand was one of the mainstays of the junior wear market, which grew from the city in the late 1930s. ——— From 1947 to 1990, Alice Topp-Lee donated garments from her personal wardrobe to the Missouri Historical Society. The donations included famous names like Christian Dior and Balenciaga. But one name stands above the rest: Charles James, a designer known for his sculptural approach to dressmaking. MHS holds 12 James ensembles, all from Topp-Lee. In her own words, a James dress “had no time, year, season. It expressed only the woman it was made for, her attitude, her styles, her requirements.” ——— One of the donated dresses in particular is a testament to James's timeless style. The designer called this one “Green Eyes.” It is a white wool evening gown with hints of dark green velvet at the bust and lower back, which complimented Topp-Lee's green eyes. She wore the gown multiple times from 1949 through 1960, including aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner and to a dinner honoring New York socialite Millicent Rogers. Topp-Lee went so far as to call Green Eyes a “true friend.” ——— Throughout her life and career, Alice Topp-Lee had an indelible sense of style, which is beautifully represented in the Missouri Historical Society collection. ——— Here's History is a joint production of KDHX and the Missouri Historical Society. I'm Adam MacPhàrlain, and this is 88-1, KDHX, Saint Louis. ———

The Fortunes of Glencore by Charles James Lever audiobook. Viscount Glencore has retreated to live alone with his son in Glencore castle after his wife deserted him claiming she did not love him. He wishes to exact revenge on her by denouncing the marriage and therefore proclaiming his son to be illegitimate. This consequently robs the child of his birthright and upon his father telling him his intentions, the boy runs away and refuses to return home. Glencore asks his old friend Upton to become the boys guardian to which he agrees after much protestation against it. The boy and his companion Billy move abroad to pursue their schooling and try to live a life of anonymity but all does not go according to plan.
Last but definitely not least, Charles James Adams talks to the Platte River Bard. From the era that Sheri and Chris grew up in, it was always a joke that five people make an official party, but in this case, if you add Mr. Adams and his wonderful energy and sense of humor, that makes five, so we were an official party! And speaking of party, Mr. Adams plays Simon Stimson, a character that is a little bit wild in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town". Mr. Adams is an Actor, Director, and Writer who has toured all over the world with theatre and television. His one-person show, Prattville, opened at the Wells Cultural Center in Lafayette, Indiana. On-screen, he has worked for Apple Tv Plus, AGBO, and The Asylum. He has worked for numerous regional theatre companies, notably for Crossroads Repertory Theatre who he toured through Germany and Poland with in 2014. In 2017 he toured Croatia for the production of Cyrano Debergerac. It was such a pleasure to meet Charles and he is a riot. So join us for some fun! The National Association of Realtors is hoping to bring a case before the Supreme Court on the use of “floor plans” for real estate deals. NAR and a coalition of real estate groups want the high court to overturn an appeals court ruling that claims the creation of a floor plan is a copyright violation, by anyone, including the homeowner who might want to post a floor plan online to help sell the home. (1)Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review. The lawsuit was filed last year by Missouri-based Designworks Homes, and the company's owner, Charles James. They claim that two real estate companies violated copyright laws by creating floor plans to help with the sale of homes that James had built. Designworks lost the first case, but the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that ruling saying that copyright law also applied to floor plans.Ruling Has Wide-Reaching ImplicationsThe ruling has wide-reaching implications for all sorts of real-estate related purposes. In a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court by NAR and other real estate groups, they claim that Congress specifically allowed for pictorial representations of homes by their owners when it created the Copyright Act of 1976. They also argue that:"Many home buyers rely on floor plans in real estate listings to decide whether to purchase a residence, and their ability to secure financing for that transaction is often contingent on an appraisal that requires the creation of a floor plan." The brief also describes other reasons a homeowner might need a floor plan, for things like renovations, installations, and the arranging of furniture. They are also useful for mortgages, tax assessments, property valuations and insurance coverage. Real Estate Coalition Appeal to Supreme CourtThe brief was submitted by NAR and a coalition of 18 other groups including Redfin, Zillow, the American Property Owners Alliance, and CoreLogic. They said in the brief that most Americans would be “startled” to hear they can't make a floor plan of their own home without violating copyright law. They say the ruling severely limits property rights and creates a scenario that invites frivolous lawsuits. It would also be a big disappointment to buyers and sellers. In NAR's recent 2021 Generational Trends Report, floor plans were third on the list of important website features for online homebuyers. Photos and listing details are the only two features listed higher than floor plans. (2)Floor Plan Popularity Among Buyers & SellersThe American Property Owners Alliance also cited its own research on the topic. In a survey conducted last month, it found that almost 90% of the respondents strongly agreed with the idea that homeowners should be able to create a floor plan of their home anytime they want. The case will go before the Supreme Court if four of the nine justices vote in favor of hearing the case and that won't happen until later this year. In the meantime, is it an issue to create and post floor plans right now? NAR's General Counsel Katie Johnson acknowledges the risk in the brief: She says: “Homeowners should be able to create and use floor plans without fear of litigation throughout the ownership and sale of their homes.” If you'd like to read more on this topic, you'll find links in the show notes at newsforinvestors.com.Also, please remember to hit the subscribe button, and leave a review! You can also join our real estate investor network for free at newsforinvestors.com. Puffer jackets have been worn by outdoorsmen, rappers, the military, luxury shoppers, and—eventually—everyone. Today, the market is still heating up. It has taken six years for director James Nunn to bring his one-take, real-time action movie to the screen. During that time, 'one-shot' movies like 'Birdman' and '1917' have not only dominated at the box office, but they have also been lauded by critics. In many ways, Nunn's intense, relentless thriller, 'One Shot' - which is released theatrically and on VOD services in the USA on 5 November 2021 courtesy of Screen Media Films - is an even more remarkable achievement, considering its comparatively low-budget and 20-day shooting schedule ('1917', by comparison, was made in 65 days). Nunn puts the success of the film down to a huge amount of preparation, and an incredibly hard-working cast and crew - especially its leading actor, Scott Adkins, who is intimately followed through every long-take, moving from dialogue scenes to gun battles, knife fights, explosions and punch-ups. As a technical feat, there's nothing quite like it in the DTV action world. In this conversation, James explores the film's many great performances - from Adkins to co-stars Ashley Greene Khoury, Ryan Phillippe, and the MMA fighter Jess Liaudin - and lifts the lid on how it was made. Lee Charles - "the Al Leong of British cinema", according to fight choreographer Tim Man - has fought on-screen with some of the world's biggest action stars. He took a clobbering from Dave Bautista in 'Final Score' (2018), and tired to take out Sope Dirisu as 'Lenn the Butcher' in an iconic, grisly battle scene in the TV show, 'Gangs of London', co-created by 'The Raid's Gareth Evans. His role as a French mercenary in 'One Shot' marks another opportunity for him to go toe-to-toe with Scott Adkins - the duo worked together on Nunn's previous Adkins flicks, 'Green Street 3: Never Back Down' (2013) and 'Eliminators' (2016), plus roles in 'Accident Man' (2018) and 'Avengement' (2019). Charles is the walking embodiment of his own life motto - that anything is achievable through hard work. He's currently working with his childhood hero, Sylvester Stallone, on the all-star action sequel, 'The Expendables 4'. We discuss his multifaceted life and career; from Everton FC to six-time World Kickboxing Champion, training with Benny "The Jet" Urquidez and making it in the movies. He was the half American Englishmen who became Americas first couturier. The only designer who's patterns are officially recognised as works of art, Charles James came to the US at a time when American designers were giving their ideas for free, while their European counterparts were protecting their intellectual rights through licensing. The man behind the Wrap Dress, the sports bra, the puffer jacket, Dior's New Look of the 1940s and the first fake fur prototype, Charles James was a man who left a far-reaching legacy. Latterly a luxury hotel-hopping International hobo, he hung out with Warhol yet is little known to those outside the world of fashion. Well known philanthropist, author and collector Michèle Gerber Klein talks about her book 'Charles James: Portrait of an Unreasonable Man' and her passion for fashion. Enchanted by Charles James - Stepping into a liminal space to study and enjoy glorious fashion designs and analyze the construction of those garments is the kind of thing that keeps me … enchanted by sewing. Hey let’s go to the show together! Links and notes- http://EnchantedBySewing.blogspot.com Some months the Enchanted by Sewing podcast, journals my own sewing project accomplishments, techniques and creative ideas. Other times I share the source of some of my sewing inspiration. This month is inspiration time, as I take you along on an another in-the-,moment fashon exhibit - a visit to the beautiful Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco , where I went repeatedly to view the exhibit, High Style: The Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection exhibit of the Brooklyn Fashion Museum. This collection – which is housed and curated by the Metropoliton Museum of Art in NY City- includes a wide range of the work of 20’th century designers and couturiers. There was no way I could share all of what I saw with you. By my third visit, I realized that , despite the charms of designers and coturiers in the exhibit- Elsa Schiaparelli and Madeleine Vionnet, just to name a few of the big names, and some that have been almost forgotten- the hands-down winner for sharing with you, was Charles James. That’s because James, and his clients and admirers, worked to see to it, that more than his beautiful garments were saved in this collection, to motivate and educate future sewists, designers and couturiers. This historical treasure trove includes sketches and muslins which really tell the story of how he worked, and what went into the garments he fashioned. They are an inspiration for the creative process. The body of Charles James work extends from the 1930s into the1950s. The garments he designed, constructed and created were worn by high society types like Austine Hearst, the wife of Mr. William Randolph Hearst, Jr., Millicent Rogers and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. They were also made for women with less blue blood like Jeanne Bultman the wife of the artist Fritz Bultman, and Gypsy Rose Lee! James didn’t just sketch up a gown and expect others to produce it. He worked in the true couture tradition (some say the only American designer who did). He draped fabric in complex ways to get what he was after. Often he created specialized support systems under his gowns, to enhance and extend their third dimensions . Charles James also used fabric in studied ways working with color, light and reflectivity in addition to the hang or drape of the material. He also focused on developing seaming techniques that molded the fabric into directions he wanted it to move.

Charles James: Beyond Fashion (”Charles James: bortom mode”) heter årets modeutställning på Metropolitan Museum of Art i New York (8 maj till 10 augusti).
