In this episode, Brent tackles a common concern for jazz musicians: jam session etiquette. Delving into a question from Monnie Murray about the appropriate duration of solos in a jam session, Brent offers insightful advice for navigating these musical gatherings with confidence and respect. He emphasizes the importance of preparation, to familiarize oneself with the repertoire of jazz standards likely to be played at the session. Drawing from his own experiences and observations, he provides a comprehensive guide to jam session etiquette, addressing issues such as volume control, instrumental balance, and the art of ending a solo gracefully. He advocates for a mindset of musical generosity, encouraging musicians to prioritize the collective experience over individual prowess. Whether you're a seasoned player or a newcomer to the jazz scene, this episode offers invaluable insights to enhance your jam session experience and foster meaningful musical connections. Performance artist and musician Tri Vo loves the work of Theater Mu, and he's looking forward to seeing them take on the horror genre in the world premiere of Keiko Green's play “Hells Canyon.” As with many classic horror pieces, we're headed to a cabin in the woods with a group of unsuspecting friends. They've booked a weekend trip in eastern Oregon, near Hells Canyon. In 1887, it was the location where white gang members massacred 34 Chinese gold miners, an actual event called the Hells Canyon Massacre. As the night progresses, supernatural forces threaten to break in, raising the temperature of the simmering tensions among the friends. Vo recalls being "freaked out” by the digital stage effects in Theater Mu's staging of “The Brothers Paranormal” in 2019, and he looks forward to seeing how this play and its stage effects work together to create an atmosphere of horror. “Hells Canyon” runs Feb. 24 — March 17 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis. There is a post-show playwright talkback on Feb 25. This show is recommended for ages 16 and up. Arts appreciator Natasha Brownlee of St. Paul enjoys both the music and the art of Ian Valor. She calls his solo art exhibit “Wild Imagination” at Vine Arts in Minneapolis a “conceptual dreamscape.” Brownlee was particularly intrigued by Valor's line drawings. Look closely, and you can see a single line of changing thickness; stand back, and the line coalesces into a single image. Valor is color blind, and his earlier work is in black and white. More recent works in color includes bold, eye-catching color combinations. Valor is the frontman of the rock group The Valors, and his art show also includes a wall of hand-lettered show posters for his and other bands. It's a visual dive into the local music scene. “Wild Imagination” is on view at Vine Arts Center in Minneapolis this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a closing artists reception from 5-8 p.m. John Carrier of Winona is a retired scenic carpenter and an ongoing jazz enthusiast. He's spreading the word about the debut album from H3O Jazz Trio, a father-and-sons group based in Winona. The father in the trio is a composer and former St. Mary's University assistant music professor named Eric Heukeshoven, who plays keyboard, among other instruments. The band also includes his sons, Max on bass and Hans on percussion and vibes. Carrier loves watching the trio improvise when they perform in person. Their new album, “TafelJazz,” translates from German to “table-jazz,” a play on “table music.” Carrier says it's the perfect album to set the mood while sitting around the table with friends. The 12 original songs include guests Janet Heukeshoven on flute, John Paulson of Paulson Jazz and John Sievers of the Rochester-based D'Sievers. H3O will perform the full album this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Island City Brewing in Winona. Island City Brewing also hosts a Jazz Jam on the third Sunday of each month that combines local live jazz, local beer and local support; it's a fundraiser for a rotating series of area nonprofits. As of early February, H3O Jazz Trio and Island City Brewing helped support local nonprofits with over $43,000 in total donations from its monthly Jazz Jams.

For his Roaming St. Louis segment this week, KMOX host Scott Jagow landed in the Grand Center Arts District. That's home to the Dark Room at the Grandel Theater. The Dark Room gets its name from the room where film is processed and it features rotating photography exhibits. But it's also where people of all ages gather every Wednesday night for the Jazz Jam. This Wednesday is the 10th anniversary of this weekly "cutting session." Scott chats with the event's host, musician and teacher Bob DeBoo, as well as Arica Foster from the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, which oversees the Dark Room and the Grandel.
hey guys welcome to the show and um I've got a bit Jazzy again I really like the Jazz Loops in I um Apple loose on logic pro and loads of them are on GarageBand as well and the reason I like them is because they out of most of the um kind of blue Apple Loops that you can access they sound really realistic so they sound less machine like and as far as I know they actually do record live artists to create the loops anyway so they're they're more of a sample than a loop I would say they're more of a you know if you're if you're making electronic music can actually sound a bit weird if you suddenly put something in that sounds really really authentically acoustic um they're not processed so much but also to get that sound you kind of leave a bit of distortion and a bit of fuzz in there because it gives it that sort of age authenticity and we're all very familiar with you know a old records for example old vinyl that kind of furiness to the audio and that little bit of hum that you get we all understand that and it can be really comforting actually it could be really nice we also understand that when we listen to live music you know there's you know you might hear things in the audience um you might hear yourself shuffling around you hear you know maybe you're heart racing because somebody hot just walked into the room you know you hear all these the ears are so sensitive they pick up everything um and so if you're trying to sort of mimic that you can you can obviously in garagebands but more so in logic pro you can add it so you can add Distortion you can add um you know filters that make things sound like their old records and all of that um but the Jazz Loops that you they're already done for us on the Apple Loops are really good so I wanted to use um some sacks so I did one the other day I love New York I can't remember I released one the other day and I I use the piano um kind of topper I call them Choppers I think that's what they're called professionally just like a little bit that goes on the top you know to add sort of Interest and um I thought no I need some sex now so um no spelling mistakes I hope because that would be wrong um so I did Sally and Molly love Jimmy um it's uh it sings a little bit different but that's the abbreviated title so I I've used a loop for the sex and I serve around vocal for the sun section and and another um Loop so I've used a sax Loop and then a piano Loop and I also actually let me just open it up and I can tell you exactly what I used can't I so um my vocal went through 60s vocal chorus I was looking for something a bit more kind of Jazzy but I couldn't find anything yet but leave that with me because I'm sure I'll find something that kind of works a bit better with a kind of live you know Jazzy kind of sense sensibility on the vocal um but I thought well 60s you know it's a bit antique isn't it a little bit um cool Jazz drum set number eight if you're interested you can you know there are lots and lots of different ones and then you can change them anyway you can completely change bits you know by adding stuff and deep pitching and um you know you changing the format all these things uh new Jazz Jam six now sex oh damn I did it I did it I did the fatal error number three jazz piano bar 13. okay and jazz piano bar 22. um so those are the loops that I've used and but I've used the trapdoor drum um which just got it's got that uh it's a percussion one and it's got that little bit of um brush stroke you know um on the skin that you've cut that's really Jazz like so it's really mellow I've kept it at 104 BPM I'm still in three four time with this just because I like doing that because so many people just sort of gravitate towards four four because it's easy for dance tracks um but I really like the three four time and I love playing that on the piano when I improvise I always gravitate towards that unless I've got a drum trap um so E flat major under three four time structure sometimes compound so you know we've all got our favorites haven't we I mean that's a problem with improvising as you are sort of uh drawn towards your favorites all the time your go-to so it doesn't quite stretch you enough so it's quite a good idea to actually you know just push yourself a little bit there so guys good news today is I've got an app um it was a free one that I set up um so you know the the one that I tried to pay for was so complicated so glitchy it was going to be a free app anyway so I didn't need a really high-end complex pages long you know what amounts to really a website a handheld website I mean that's all the app is really so the app is live if you pop over to all of my you know my various places I'll put it on YouTube as well in fact I did put it on YouTube I just shared a Blog on there so you can download it's all free and and you can actually download it to your phone so you can catch up with these without having to go into all my microphones swinging away with that it's it's on a um a hanging apparatus so that I don't touch it but it actually swung away them um yeah so you don't have to you know go into spreaker or iTunes or any of those places to catch these podcasts if you want to download them I don't know how you do that other than you know being actually on a computer but I'm guys you'll figure it out you guys figure these things out um so here we go without further Ado Sally and Molly love Jimmy um a nice medium pace Jazz Groove Whitetail Telecom featuring ice Overland[Music] loves him tooforeign

Queens has long been the home of prominent jazz musicians, like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. And Flushing Town Hall, which is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate dedicated to presenting global arts programming, is making sure New Yorkers remember these legends by hosting monthly jazz jams. The series has been promoting jazz in Queens for decades and this month the public is invited to the 2nd annual Jazz Jam All-Stars Concert. Jazz Jam is a gathering of musicians whose sole purpose is to jam out together; age and skill level don't matter. We hear from a few of our neighbors who are participating including musicians Ezra Kessler, Mimi Block, and band leader Carol Sudhalter. So we are definitely feeling the coming of Spring, the greening of the Earth now easily visible, the blossom on the trees, the energy builds, the coming of new life, the breath of the universe. Well this is the Cosmic Jam, what do you expect, a treatise on the benefits big pharma? No we're dedicated to a more holistic approach in case you hadn't realised. I for one am certainly feeling the benefits of a change of diet recently and adopting an even healthier lifestyle, not that I was wallowing in a trough of fast food and bad habits before!! Does this have an effect on The Cosmic Jam… well I hope a beneficial one if any. Positivity abounds at Forge towers of late, and we're enjoying the music more than ever, I suppose if anything I've had a bit of soulful renaissance, in that it's the SOUL that's tipping my balance, but JAZZ is still there in abundance, perhaps in the not too dim and distant I'll do a dedicated Jazz Jam just to renew my faith. Not that Jazz doesn't gets look in in this week's selection far from it, in fact I programmed a distinctly jazztastic left turn early on in proceedings as I didn't want to get caught up in House music, though I really did want to play the Kyodai remix of Shuya Okino's "Still In Love" which kicks things off after a little acapella affirmation from The Peech Boys. So after that blast of jazz infused club energy, we get the rugged tenor of Bob Berg, the smooth but textured vibes of The Expansions and the invigoratingly fresh Agora Ensemble to complete a first section that definitely holds up the jazz content of this week's show. Brazilian music is so close to my heart and most of the qualities that I admire are present in the Ivan Lins tune "Quadros De Roda" the swing of the Samba is all pervasive, just listen to Lins' piano and imagine how difficult it is to play like that, it's not complicated but the feel, and that word again, swing, are sublime. Melody is also paramount and I love the vocal chorus. So We gets little funkier with a Gal Costa tune from her much ignored but undeniably brilliant eighties period. I had a little exchange with Rainer Truby about these tunes during the week so I was very happy to expand my collection with a copy of her Minha Voz album acquired for a fairly nominal sum, and I soon zoomed in on Musa Cabocla with it's slightly Steely Dan-esque horns and rippling rhythm section. In a world where AOR/ Yacht Rock has suddenly become a hip new sound, (some would say scraping the barrel in search of rare grooves) such Brazilian lushness as this Gal tune is vastly preferable to my ears than some of the obscure bits that are currently changing hands for silly sums. However I have lately developed a penchant for Hawaiian rare groove/soul/ folk-funk, call it what you will there's a distinct flavour to the island's music that I've picked up through my love of Seawind, the band that justifiably crossed over into the US mainstream and various CD reissues that I've picked up in Japan. Seawind, led by the drummer and prolific songwriter Bob Wilson with his wife Pauline on vocals, coupled with the musical wherewithal of Larry Williams and that killer horn section, are definitely way up there in my estimation and not just for their bona fide jazz-dance classics "He Loves You" and "Free", though "Devil Is A Liar" is attune that's always had plays and props from the London cognoscenti, it ticks all the boxes and then some for that Hawaiian sound, like a boogie tune infused with gospel and folk vibes played by a killer jazz-funk ensemble, so good to hear that again. The Nohelani Cypriano tune that follows was a highlight of the recent Floating Points/Love On The Run session at Plastic People, every time I hear that intro I just melt!! Tavares are a band I've studiously ignored through the years, however that all changed when I heard "Ridin High" recently, reminiscent of The Natural Four, it's pedigree vocal harmony business. The Mighty Clouds Of Joy's album was something I bought on spec recently instinctively knowing it would have the kind of gospel-boogie that "Glow Love" turned out to be. Tarika Blue's classic "Truth Is The Key" closes the first hour, just remembering the joy when I first got my grubby mitts on a copy of that album raises a smile now!! I was so obsessed with James Mason's Rhythm Of Life album when I heard about (kind of related) Tarika Blue I went nuts until I eventually connected with a copy! Memories… but the music still sounds great. Some new Jazz worthy of the Cosmic Jam's high standards, and you know I wouldn't kick off the second half of the show with any old rubbish, takes us off into that mesmeric territory that in many ways was first mapped out by the great Sun Ra. Nick Woodmansey aka Emanative who produced Collocutor's "Archaic Morning" is a huge Sun Ra fan and space-jazz evangelist, and for my money he's getting closer and closer to a sound that genuinely embodies that incredible heritage whilst also having a contemporary twist. Archaic Morning is properly tranced out, a good way to drop into another great track from Melanie De Biasio's excellent No Deal, The Flow is deeper than deep, so much so we had to brighten up after that darkening of the mood. And Greetje Kaufeld's version of the devotional "Day By Day" from the gospel rock opera Godspell is one that I adore with it's bonkers big band arrangement . Michael Gregory Jackson's albums are just the kind of left footed soulful music that always fell between the cracks of most tastes back in the day, (as did so much great music, I can remember throwing way Rotary Connection and Lou Bond albums when I worked for Reckless Records in the late eighties because they's been reduced all the way down to 50p and still no takers!) These days these kind of artists are better appreciated for the way in which they threw together so many influences, I love the MGJ's Heart ANd Center album and "Lovin You" just gets better for me, kind of like an East Coast Shuggie Otis. Had to pull out the Dave Valentin album The Hawk, to touch down on "We'll Make Love" with Angela Bofill on vocals, the pair had worked together since being involved in Ricardo Marrero's groups, and you can't mess with the production values of the GRP label, the sound is impeccable, and of course the players Dave Grusin brought through from the jamaica Queens posse, Marcus Miller, Dennis Chambers, Don Blackman, Bernard Wright, wow , what a stable!! Esther Marrow's "Ask Me To Dance" is another fine tune, written and arranged by Bobby Scott whose credits are as impressive as anyone's in the history of popular music. This is the man who wrote " A Taste Of Honey" and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" , ooof! So by way of a finale I had to start with a tune that I've had lurking around for a while, but not found a way to play, as it's not the kind of thing that sits easily in most types of Cosmic Jam sequence. However Pat Williams "Joy Joy" is a beautifully bonkers piece of orchestrated funk that definitely deserved an airing, so I goaded myself into it by posting a picture of the cover on Instagram beforehand!! Following on with a bona fide rare groove classic from 9th Creation, and a favourite from Caldera, the ever impressive "Sky Islands", before we land on "Do You Want To Dance" from Jim Messina's rather wonderful Oasis album which also takes me back to early days of The Cosmic Jam, I've only just re-acquired this on vinyl, it's proper West Coast, Steely Dan at the disco business… time to go before I get carried away. Hope you enjoy the music. May I remind you about a little session well worth investigating…. https://www.facebook.com/events/609272492453291/ 1.
