Tonight's Jazz Feature is this show's usual tribute to The Season and a long standing tradition. It's known as the "Bags' Groove Session". The music is truly classic and always worth hearing. Miles Davis is the nominal leader on trumpet with Milt Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. A meeting of Jazz Masters indeed. All of this was recorded on December 24,1954 and the whole date has a Christmassy feel to it even though that certainly wasn't the intention. We'll hear the 4 master takes from this timeless date and is our Christmas Jazz Feature. Merry Christmas to all!

Welcome to episode 109 of Holly Jolly X'masu! April is Jazz Awareness Month, and in this episode, I talk about the 1998 album, “Jingle Jazz.” I hope you enjoyed “Jingle Jazz” as much as I do. I love a good Christmas Jazz album, and this one is one of the better, more recent ones in my collection. I know a fair number of people who won't give Jazz a chance. Jazz encompasses such a wide array of styles, though, that that's almost like saying they won't give music a chance. I don't listen to enough to be able to tell you which specific genres of Jazz I like, but there's quite a bit that appeals to me, from Smooth Jazz, to really bizarre, improvisational Jazz. “Jingle Jazz” is diverse enough that it tends to hit all the sweet spots. Join me back here next week for something a little different. I'll be talking about “Superman Santa,” a children's book and record set from 1986. It actually fits the theme of month, at least a little, in that the music was composed by Minoru Mukaiya and Issei Noro from the Jazz Fusion band, Cassiopeia. It's a lot of fun and one you're sure to enjoy. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Welcome to episode 108 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, for my special Pro Wrestling Spectacular, I'm pitting the 1970s Christmas albums of pro wrestlers the Destroyer and Thunder Sugiyama against one another in order to determine which deserves the title of the Christmas World Heavyweight Champion. This was a fun episode for me. I hope you enjoyed both wrestlers' albums as much as I did. I watched a ton of wrestling when I was younger and went to the closed-circuit broadcasts of Wrestlemanias 3-6, watching all the action on the jumbo screens at Dayton's Hara Arena. One of my fondest memories from my early teenage years was going to a TV taping to see Hulk Hogan during the height of Hulkamania. I've also been lucky enough to meet a bunch of wrestlers, including Koko B. Ware, Rob Van Dam, Taz, and newly-inducted WWE Hall of Famer, Paul Heyman. I don't follow it quite like I used to, but I still enjoy seeing all the big events. This episode was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. I've been doing research for it off and on for about two years. Unfortunately, I didn't keep track of all the blogs and articles I read. There were several things I wanted to double-check, but I couldn't find where I'd read them originally so I had to leave them out. As promised in the episode, here's Thunder Sugiyama's debut single, “Crossroads.” I'm also including a match from each of them, both of which feature their mutual friend, Abdullah the Butcher. Thunder Sugiyama – Crossroads 10.12.1975 - PWF United States Heavyweight title: The Destroyer (c) vs Abdullah The Butcher 12.11.1972 - Abdullah The Butcher/Ciclon Negro vs Masio Koma/Thunder Sugiyama 2 of 3 Falls April is Jazz Awareness month, so join me next time for the 1998 album, “Jingle Jazz.” It has an unassuming and generic cover, but some of the finest Christmas Jazz you're likely to hear. Then join me on the 25th for the 1986 children's book and album, “Superman Santa.” It's a lot of fun and one you won't want to miss. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. Welcome to episode 105 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about Akiko's 2007 album, “A White Album.” I hope you enjoyed “A White Album.” Japanese Jazz from the 1960s was one of the main reasons I started collecting, but a lot of fantastic Christmas Jazz albums have come out of Japan over the past twenty years as well. It's always fun discovering something new. Join me back here on the 25th for Akiko's second Christmas album, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” It features more stripped-down arrangements and puts a lot more focus on Akiko's vocals. It's another great album you're sure to enjoy. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. Tonight's Jazz Feature has been an important part of tonight's Christmas Jazz Show for many years and tradition will continue with the famous and lasting Christmas Eve (1954) recording session with the Miles Davis All-Stars. It's sometimes known as the "Bags' Groove Session" as that tune written by Milt Jackson is the opener. The All-Stars are of course, Miles Davis on trumpet, Milt Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Four tunes were recorded and the session has gone into Jazz History as a very important document and timeless music. The men creating this music were just playing what they always played doing it so very well. The tunes are "Bags' Groove by Milt Jackson, Bemsha swing by Thelonious Monk, The Man I Love by the Gershwin Brothers, and Miles Davis', Swing Spring. The spirit of Christmas seems to be evident throughout the session without any actual reference to Christmas music, There will be more tributes to Christmas tonight so when the big day rolls around..... Merry Christmas to Jazz fans everywhere and to a brighter 2024.

In the late nineteenth century modern postal systems were still coming into their own. Around the turn of the century, many countries, including England, began issuing Christmas themed postage stamps. You might think that America would have been among them, but boy would you be wrong.  In fact, America was one of the last countries to get on board. American Christmas stamps are only a few decades old. And the story there has to do with simple economics and America's system of government. Girls Gone Hallmark is a twice-weekly Hallmark review podcast. Today, Megan and Wendy, review the Lacey Chabert sequel "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up." With its excellent ensemble cast and razor-sharp dialogue, could this sequel sleigh the first movie? Download and listen now! About Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up Director - Maclain Nelson - His 14 directing credits include this year's "A Heidelberg Holiday" and of course the OG "Haul Out the Holly." Writer - Chris Sey  - With only 6 credits, Christopher has only written one previous Hallmark movie, "You're Bacon Me Crazy." He was not the writer on the first "Haul out the Holly." Christopher Sey's incredible efforts during the pandemic. While researching him, I learned that his wife is an ER doc at a hospital in Los Angeles. Along with some friends, he founded a non-profit called DINE ONE ONE that not only provided meals for healthcare workers, but also supported local restaurants.  "Haul out the Holly: Lit Up" was filmed in Utah in September 2023. Lacey Chabert (Emily) - With 175 acting credits it's safe to say Lacey is more than just the queen of Christmas. She also appeared in "A Merry Scottish Christmas" and "The Dancing Detective" this year in addition to reprising her role as Gretchen Werner's in a Walmart Black Friday commercial. Wes Brown (Jared) His 48 acting credits include a ton of Hallmark, but believe it or not we've only reviewed two of his movies here on GGH. Wes dropped his Christmas Jazz album this year titled "My Kind of Christmas." Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned) - Stephen wins the prize for most acting credits of an Actor Appearing on Hallmark, if such a prize exists, with 290 credits. What hasn't he been in? He was a series regular on "The Goldbergs," "One Day at a Time," "Californication," "Silicon Valley" and "Heroes" and we're glad to have him on Hallmark. Related Podcast Episode: Girls Gone Hallmark reviews the original "Haul Out the Holly" from 2022. Melissa Peterman (Pamela) Melissa always lights up the screen in any role among her 36 acting credits. She appeared in "Baby Daddy" on Netflix and of course her role as Barbara Jean on "Reba" is iconic.  Ellen Travolta (Mary Louise) - yes, that Travolta! She has 52 acting credits and appeared in series like "Charles in Charge" and "Joani loves Chachi." In addition to reprising her role as Mary Louise on "Haul Out the Holly," she's reprising a 30 year old role on "General Hospital" as Gloria Cerullo coming up soon. Jennifer Aspen (Jane Johnson). Welcome to episode 90 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about Yuki Izumine's 2008 album, “Let It Snow!” I've mentioned before that part of why I started collecting Japanese albums was to find new Christmas Jazz albums. I've managed to add a ton of fantastic Jazz to my collection, and they're some of my favorite albums to share with you. My episodes between now and Christmas will feature more Jazz than normal, including one album that took me over two years to track down, and another that's considered one of the holiest of Holy Grails among Japanese Christmas albums. So if you've enjoyed the Christmas Jazz I've covered so far, you'll really love what I talk about in November and December. Be sure to join me back here on the 25th for “Christmas Songs” from 2010. It's a great compilation with some really fun and interesting selections. Then be sure to listen in on November 1st for Christmas Podcast Day, when a bunch of us Christmas podcasters release special episodes to kick off the season and encourage listeners to check out some of the other podcasters out there. My episode will tread somewhat different ground than I normally cover, but you're sure to enjoy it. Thanks!

I was talking with one of my high school students a few weeks ago about music by women composers. We were studying "Canoeing" by Amy Beach in the Celebration Series Level 7 Piano Repertoire book, the third piece in her Op. 119 collection, From Six to Twelve for Piano written in 1927. "Amy Beach was the first American woman to achieve widespread recognition as a composer of large-scale works," I read from my iPad.My student, in addition to piano and double bass, her primary instrument, is also a composer. Her most recent work was a four-and-a-half-minute piece for string ensemble that she wrote over a weekend! She's also picked up numerous other instruments through the years—harpsichord, marimba, viola, bass drum, guitar, and even a Viola da Gamba. We listened to a recording of the piece and played through the score. We discussed how the rippling eighth notes between the hands create a sense of paddling, left then right. We talked about Amy Beach's life, marriage, and musical career."This piece reminds me of works by a few other women composers," I said after a few minutes. I pulled up a copy of Cecile Chaminade's Album des enfants, Op. 123 written in 1906 and played the first page. "Another female composer writing around this same time was Charlotte Sohy," I said. "She has a set of piano pieces that might be fun for you to play," I said, pulling up the score for 6 petites pièces on my iPad. Her eyes lit up. "Yes, I'd like that," she said, nodding. This is how the idea began for studying and learning music by women composers during the month of March, International Women's Month. In this episode, I'll talk about the composers and scores we'll study over the next four weeks and share a resource list of elementary and intermediate piano music written by women composers that you can reference in your teaching. For show notes, click here.Resources Mentioned*Disclosure: I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.Celebration Series Level 7 Piano Repertoire bookFrom Six to Twelve for Piano, Op. 119 (Amy C. “Of all of the guests I have had on my show whom I have had the great fortune to know personally, I believe Dmitri Matheny would count as the oldest of friends since my association with him goes back at least to early 1983 - at Interlochen Arts Academy . When we were both living in Boston, I was the pianist with a wonderful group he organized. I have to say, without reservations, that not only is Dmitri a superb all around musician but is one of the most organized and conscientious people in the arts I have ever known and it is a rare thing indeed when those coexist in the same soul. He was able to get us a lot gigs in that band and he is that rare artist who also happens to have a business sense. He also happened to have made his instrumental speciality one of my favorite of all the horns: the flugelhorn. (And made what I still consider the greatest Christmas Jazz album , to which I contributed an arrangement) https://dmitrimatheny.bandcamp.com/album/santas-got-a-brand- new-bag You will note that we talk a lot in this episode about the music and musicians we love. I truly believe that to be the best artist one can be requires finding an individual, you can say a mentor, to help be a guide. This is education of the highest sort and of course can happen either in or outside of an institution. This is a very old school, "apprenticeship" method and I can't imagine having gone about things in any other way. One of the advantages of having that one mentor like this is that you are getting a partial glimpse into that mentor's mind on a one- to-one, intimate level, something I can't see happening to the same effect in a crowded classroom. In Dmitri's case this mentor was none other than the great Art Farmer, no less. In my case it was pianist/composer Stanley Cowell. Of course it is a truism that sometimes the best performers aren't always the best teachers; in my case I was most fortunate that the two coincided., since Cowell remains one of my favorite pianists. We talk a lot about Art Farmer on this episode and you will know why if you know Farmer's playing. I really enjoyed this conversation; it was like a reunion of sorts after about two decades and it was one that was a joyous occasion. One of the reasons his business sense was so welcome, at least in the case of our kind of music, is that he would show up to a gig or a session and everything was so well planned and executed in terms of logistics that you could really be most free, let go, and blow, like the old expression, "that cat's charts play themselves." Dmitri Bio Winner of NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year honors in the Seattle Earshot Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music , Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, releasing eleven CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.” Links to Dmitri’s beautiful works: Website http://www.dmitrimatheny.com Tour https://www.dmitrimatheny.com/tour Touring History https://www.dmitrimatheny.com/touring-history Biography http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/biography Music http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/music Videos http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/videos Discography http://www.dmitrimatheny.com/discography Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitri_Matheny Instagram http://instagram.com/dmitrimatheny Twitter https://twitter.com/dmitrimatheny YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/papillonrecordings https://dmitrimatheny.bandca --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mitch-hampton/support

Welcome to Episode 7 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I cover the 2014 compilation, “Flying Dog Christmas,” from Flying Dog records. I figured this would be a good choice for August, expecting to be in the dog days of summer, but ended up recording it during a stretch of fall-like weather. I didn’t realize it at the time I chose it that all the songs were taken from Anime. I’ve never really gotten into Anime so I’m not familiar with any of the shows or characters. Forgive me if I messed up some of the pronunciations. I also have to apologize for how I sound, at least in the first part of the episode. I was coming out of a horrible stretch of insomnia when I recorded it and I didn’t realize how much I sounded like a zombie until I was editing it. As we enter the Ber Months, I’ll be covering some absolutely exceptional albums. I’ve been learning the ropes over the last few months and feel a lot more comfortable with this than I did back in April. I’ve also added some really remarkable albums to my collection and I’m eager to start sharing them with you. As much as I enjoy the music I’ve already discussed, I’m extremely excited about the albums I have in store. A couple of them are albums I’ve mentioned already, or that are somewhat familiar to real diehard Christmas music collectors, others are albums that are obscure even in Japan. I’ll be discussing everything from Jazz and Funk, to early 70s Now Sound Pop and one of my favorite 80s compilations. A bit further down the road, I’ll be covering a couple of early 70s boy bands and one of the top Japanese female vocalists of the 20th century. As always, thanks for listening. Next month, I’ll be featuring the album, “Christmas Tenor Mood” by the Nakamura Hachidai Quintet and Hidehiko Matsumoto. This is one of the best Japanese albums I own. It’s an exceptional Christmas Jazz album, and something you don’t want to miss. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions or recommendations, feel free to send them my way. Any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If you’d like to recommend an album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. Any donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

A little Christmas reading ASMR style, without any edits of mistakes etc. in Norwegian language. In the background you can hear the fireplace burning and comforting, and in this episode I cannot hide the fact that this story brings me to tears, each time! This is a classic and it reminds us to be grateful of what we have and keep our eyes and hearts open for those who are less fortunate. Do you have any requests for episodes? #Asmr #tingles #relax #braingasm #bedtime #fairytale #meditation #stories #storiesforkids #kids #Asmr #tingles #relax #braingasm #bedtime #fairytale #meditation #book #Norwegian #learn norwegian #whispering #whisper #whispered #soft voices #soft spoken

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. Obviously a classic in the world of hip-hop, this song paints a bleak portrait of reality. I think they draw different conclusions why things are the way they are but i’m sure you’ll see what i see. This week in I Heard This Happened: some Nicky P original material & some Christmas Jazz... Nicky’s album this week is Vol. 1 by Puma Thurman. I won’t wax poetic because it’s my own album. Me and a bunch of my dad friends released create adventure rock. Most of the songs are about movies. Enjoy! Lizzie brings us Luminous by Betty’s Bounce, a Django Reinhardt inspired gypsy jazz take on some holiday classics. Nothing to belabor just some fun takes on some seasonal classics...maybe Liz is taking this gypsy jazz thing too far. This week’s interview is with Jae Caetano, host of Anarcho Inc & Owner Of Anarcho Coffee. This is a serious businessman taking the capitalist part of Anarcho-Capitalist real seriously. We had a fantastic discussion, sadly most of it didn’t make the episode. To hear all sorts of business talk and coffee process sign up for patreon access. This famous Christmas Eve session has for years been our Christmas Jazz feature and 2015 is no different. This all-star record date by a band nominally led by trumpeter and Jazz icon Miles Davis contains Jazz that will live forever and has influenced countless players over the years. A true musical landmark. Mr. Davis is paired with three members of the Modern Jazz Quartet which included Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums, who was the MJQ's first drummer. Davis was pleased with the lineup but Prestige Record's head honcho, Bob Weinstock insisted that Thelonious Monk be on piano. Miles at first objected but finally agreed and the addition of Monk to this mix was a touch of magic. Monk was the spice on this musical concoction. The musical chemistry was wonderful here and tonight we hear the four master takes from this session beginning with Milt Jackson's blues, "Bags' Groove" which contains one of Monk's most fascinating solos. Next is a Monk tune called "Bemsha Swing". Following that is the brightest tune of the set in Miles Davis' tune "Swing Spring" and the set ends with the band's interpretation of the George and Ira Gershwin standard "The Man I Love". Great Jazz for the ages and the spirit of Christmas is heard throughout the set. Merry Christmas to all!
