Reid chats with Grant Ritchie of Minam, Oregon, about hunting the Hells Canyon area by raft. Grant has a long family history in the region and has been guiding cast-and-blast trips on the Snake and Salmon Rivers out of his Oregon-based Minam Store. Grant discusses his family history, his personal return to the area to become an outfitter and guide, and the remarkable bird hunting experience available there. Grant's float trips regularly produce a mixed bag that includes chukar, valley quail, huns, ruffed grouse, mountain quail, and even turkeys. This podcast is the audio version of the Gear Garage Live Show, where we answer submitted questions and talk all things whitewater. Topics and links that Zach talked about this episode GoRafting.Com Answer Questions Some of the Questions that Zach covered in the Q&A section of this episode Topic: Throw Ropes On the Ocoee River in Southeast TN we are permitted by TN State Parks and they oversee the day to day. We are working with rules that were last updated in the 90's. Proposed new rules will require a throw rope 3/8" diameter 70' long in every commercial boat with a knife in every boat. I definitely agree with a knife with every throw rope, but I am having a hard time with a rope in every boat. Current rule states a throw rope with every 6 boats and no knife requirement. The Ocoee is wide and shallow in most places. We have had a death and a de-gloving of a digit in the past few years from throw ropes. I like "senior" guides who have training to carry throw ropes, but I think of the first and second year guides who are just trying to learn how to function as a river guide and most are not ready to carry a throw rope and a knife. A busy July/August Saturday might have 1000 commercial boats per day, which means to me the potential for many dropped knifes in the river. Thoughts? Topic: Hells Canyon Hi Zach, I scored a Hells Canyon permit launching June 15, a new river for me. The next three days are scheduled non-jetboat days, so that's nice. Floating from the dam to Heller Bar and we want 1 layover day. How many total days do you think we should plan for? Any other input for this stretch you might share? Thanks for these videos and I hope River Hardware is doing well. Topic: Middle Fork Boats We scored a Middle Fork permit for July 14. Wondering about your thoughts on taking an 18 ft SOTAR at that time of year? I've got other options, but the next size down is an E140…
This week John Kruse visits the Lewis-Clark Valley bordering Washington and Idaho. It's a region rich with natural experiences to include great fishing, chukar hunting and the chance to explore Hells Canyon, North America's Deepest Gorge. Michelle Peters, the President and CEO of Visit Lewis Clark Valley will tell you more. We've also got a bevy of outdoors news and an interview with Dac Collins, writing for Outdoor Life about a dangerous wolf encounter taking place at a Wisconsin duck blind. Finally, we share an award-winning interview with Glenn May from Bassresource.com about being a successful angler fishing from the back of the boat. www.americaoutdoors.com

Hells Canyon ReduxBeing that May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I wanted to share a story that would highlight violence against those in the AAPI community, then I remembered one of the first cases I covered, way back in September of 2019; The Hells Canyon Massacre. Since that time, the story has received more media coverage, and my research abilities have improved, so I wanted to revisit the case and share even more of the story of Hells Canyon and how it isn't a hidden shadow in Oregon's history, but rather a cornerstone to its racist foundation. As it stands, Oregon only has one full-fledged national park at Crater Lake. If things had gone differently, we could have had more. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we dive back through time to talk about four places around the state that were once considered for national park status – and why they weren't ultimately picked. We also discuss whether or not the National Park Service should reconsider. Do Oregon's beautiful natural landmarks deserve more respect? Or would it be a terrible idea? Here are some highlights from this week's show: A national park at Hells Canyon? Would it be worth it? Why Oregon's tallest mountain seems like a natural pick. An Oregon Coast national park proposal captured the public's imagination. How the National Park Service did Silver Falls dirty. Performance artist and musician Tri Vo loves the work of Theater Mu, and he's looking forward to seeing them take on the horror genre in the world premiere of Keiko Green's play “Hells Canyon.” As with many classic horror pieces, we're headed to a cabin in the woods with a group of unsuspecting friends. They've booked a weekend trip in eastern Oregon, near Hells Canyon. In 1887, it was the location where white gang members massacred 34 Chinese gold miners, an actual event called the Hells Canyon Massacre. As the night progresses, supernatural forces threaten to break in, raising the temperature of the simmering tensions among the friends. Vo recalls being "freaked out” by the digital stage effects in Theater Mu's staging of “The Brothers Paranormal” in 2019, and he looks forward to seeing how this play and its stage effects work together to create an atmosphere of horror. “Hells Canyon” runs Feb. 24 — March 17 at the Jungle Theater in Minneapolis. There is a post-show playwright talkback on Feb 25. This show is recommended for ages 16 and up. Arts appreciator Natasha Brownlee of St. Paul enjoys both the music and the art of Ian Valor. She calls his solo art exhibit “Wild Imagination” at Vine Arts in Minneapolis a “conceptual dreamscape.” Brownlee was particularly intrigued by Valor's line drawings. Look closely, and you can see a single line of changing thickness; stand back, and the line coalesces into a single image. Valor is color blind, and his earlier work is in black and white. More recent works in color includes bold, eye-catching color combinations. Valor is the frontman of the rock group The Valors, and his art show also includes a wall of hand-lettered show posters for his and other bands. It's a visual dive into the local music scene. “Wild Imagination” is on view at Vine Arts Center in Minneapolis this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a closing artists reception from 5-8 p.m. John Carrier of Winona is a retired scenic carpenter and an ongoing jazz enthusiast. He's spreading the word about the debut album from H3O Jazz Trio, a father-and-sons group based in Winona. The father in the trio is a composer and former St. Mary's University assistant music professor named Eric Heukeshoven, who plays keyboard, among other instruments. The band also includes his sons, Max on bass and Hans on percussion and vibes. Carrier loves watching the trio improvise when they perform in person. Their new album, “TafelJazz,” translates from German to “table-jazz,” a play on “table music.” Carrier says it's the perfect album to set the mood while sitting around the table with friends. The 12 original songs include guests Janet Heukeshoven on flute, John Paulson of Paulson Jazz and John Sievers of the Rochester-based D'Sievers. H3O will perform the full album this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Island City Brewing in Winona. Island City Brewing also hosts a Jazz Jam on the third Sunday of each month that combines local live jazz, local beer and local support; it's a fundraiser for a rotating series of area nonprofits. As of early February, H3O Jazz Trio and Island City Brewing helped support local nonprofits with over $43,000 in total donations from its monthly Jazz Jams.
The conversation discusses the outbreak of pneumonia in the Hells Canyon area of Idaho among bighorn sheep. The host shares his personal experience with a similar outbreak in the past and highlights the severity of the disease. The challenges of managing and translocating infected sheep are also discussed. The conversation emphasizes the inability to slow the spread of the disease and the potential catastrophic impact on the bighorn sheep population. The tri-state area and the response of each state are mentioned, and the hope for a better outcome is expressed. Takeaways Pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (MOV) is a serious threat to bighorn sheep populations. Translocating infected sheep can lead to the spread of the disease and compromise the entire herd. There is currently no effective way to slow the spread of the disease or reduce death among infected sheep. The outbreak in the Hells Canyon area of Idaho could have a catastrophic impact on the bighorn sheep population. The response of each state in the tri-state area will be crucial in monitoring and managing the outbreak. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/500 Presented By: Mavrk Fly Fishing, Dette Flies, Trxstle, Jackson Hole Fly Company In this milestone episode, we talk about the Klamath Dam Removal journey with Ann Willis. Ann shares her incredible conservation journey, starting from a 6-day white water raft trip. We explore the unique characteristics of the Klamath River, the catalyst for conservation efforts following a devastating fish kill, and the ambitious goals set by American Rivers for dam removal across the nation. Klamath Dam Removal Show Notes with Ann Willis 02:47 - Ann's journey into conservation began with a 6-day rafting trip on the Middle Fork Salmon River, leading her to work as a white-water raft guide for several years. After realizing the need for a more sustainable career, she delved into river science for 15 years and ultimately led her own research program at the U.C. Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. Ann Willis guiding a raft down the Grand Canyon. Photo credit: Amy Quinton 10:00 - Ann introduces the unique characteristics of the Klamath River. The Klamath River was a highly productive ecosystem until around 1918, when the construction of hydroelectric dams began. Among those dams were Copco No. 1, Copco No. 2, Iron Gate, and JC Boyle. 18:42 - In the early 2000s, a significant event that catalyzed conservation efforts in the Klamath River was a massive fish kill. During a drought, water shortages and poor water quality caused by the dams led to a devastating sight of dead fish floating for miles along the riverbanks. 30:00 - Monitoring efforts in the Klamath River assess stream flow, water quality, and the presence and distribution of aquatic life like insects and fish. 35:00 - The removal of dams can have a positive impact on climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with reservoirs. Additionally, it encourages the shift towards more sustainable and emissions-friendly energy sources like solar and wind power. About American Rivers 38:00 - In light of American Rivers' 50th Anniversary, Ann gives advice to those advocating for the removal of the Snake River dams. Hells Canyon on the Snake River, ID. The Snake River is one of the next large dam removal campaigns to improve river health for people and the environment. Photo credit: Ann Willis 46:00 - Ann acknowledges the lack of diversity in conservation organizations. She added that there are also Eurocentric notions that need to be reevaluated, like the idea that these natural spaces are resources for us to profit from or benefit from rather than steward and enhance. 49:00 - American Rivers was founded in the 1970s, a period predating the establishment of significant environmental regulations such as the Clean Water Act and the Environmental Protection Agency. 49:30 There was a notable incident where the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire due to extreme pollution. We talked about this in an episode with Alex Czayka. 51:00 - American Rivers has set ambitious goals to address dams across the country that have reached the end of their practical lifespan. Their vision includes the removal of 30,000 dams by 2050. 59:24 - People interested in the dam removal can reach out to the Klamath River Renewal Corporation. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/500

Leanna Wentz is no stranger to herding sheep, her family has been running sheep and cattle for over 10 generations. But running sheep in Hells Canyon is a different beast. Sheep are always trying to die, and Hells Canyon is one of the most hostile places I've ever been that wasn't an active war zone. But Leanna's family made it work. From 1992 to 1998, her family had the last sheep permit in the U.S. that was run 12 months of the year on forest service land, until their operation was shut down due to fear of disease transmission to wild bighorns. She's got some wild stories of moving 2,200 head up and down the Snake River and across steep terrain. Wild stories of protecting the herd and of life in the canyon. Her stories are worth preserving and hopefully not the last of their kind. Hells Canyon is a special place to me. The rugged terrain and powerful Snake River is beautiful, but harsh. My guest today, Mike Baird, has been guiding folks down the Snake for years and feels the same about it. I consider Mike's knowledge of Hells Canyon to be as encyclopedic as anyone out there. It was Mike who first taught me the history of the canyon on a guide training trip years ago, and I couldn't get enough. In this episode, I had Mike sit down and walk me through the natural and cultural history of this remarkable place. From the forming of the canyon thousands of years ago, to the incredibly tough people who lived there. Learn more about the Cooper's Ferry Archeological Site

In the early summer of 1887, bodies of murdered Chinese miners floated down the Snake River into Lewiston, ID. Racism and plain lack of care + compassion kept the story of the Hells Canyon Massacre threadbare for over 100 years. Justice was never achieved in this case, but 31 innocent Chinese men deserve to have their story told. This is the story of the Hells Canyon Massacre and a glimpse into life as a Chinese immigrant in America in the late 1800s. Sources Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon. Nokes, R. Gregory. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/336 Presented By: Trxstle, Reyr Gear, Bearvault, LakeLady Custom Rods Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In today's episode, we talk about fly fishing Idaho with Ed Anderson. He takes us to the McCall area in West Idaho where we touch on the Payette, Boise, and Snake rivers for rainbows, browns, and bass fishing. Find out why McCall was described as "the place of windows" and why you "have to be there to know when the windows open". We won't reveal those secret fishing spots but Ed tells us the best times to fish up there and some more useful tips. We also dig into Ed's artwork - his role being the Creative Director of West Mountain Drifters, and how he got picked up by Gray's Sporting Journal for multiple cover projects. Fly Fishing Idaho Show Notes with Ed Anderson 03:30 - Ed used to work for Jackson Kayaks - James McBeath from Jackson Kayaks was on the podcast at WFS 248 04:00 - McCall is located in Southwestern Idaho, 2 hours North of Boise, pinned between the Hells Canyon and Frank Church Wilderness of No Return - Frank Church is the largest wilderness area in the Lower 48 and Hells Canyon is the deepest Canyon in America 09:10 - The Payette and Boise rivers are Ed's home water 10:30 - The Payette and Cascade reservoirs are gigantic reservoirs - people go wakeboarding there 11:55 - Boise is now the fastest growing place in America 12:30 - Boise gets about 300 days of sunshine 13:50 - Summer is not a good fishing time in Idaho because the water level is low. Ed's favorite time to fish is when the snow is still on the ground - end of March going April. 17:05 - In Snake River, people go bass, carp, and sturgeon fishing. The largest sturgeon that was ever caught in America was in the Snake River at 117 inches 18:20 - Ed prefers the Boise over the Payette river, he says it's a more consistent cool-water fishery. August and September are Ed's preferred times to fish the Boise river because the water level stays the same for a number of days. 22:15 - On the Boise river, they get a little of the caddis hatch and primarily they're euro nymphing or streamer fishing 24:50 - Fish and Game Idaho plant steelheads in the Boise river from time to time 31:50 - Ed used to use a Coosa by Jackson Kayak 34:40 - Ed's got an Adipose skiff 35:10 - NRS Raft is a raft company from Moscow. They're coming out with a whole new line of rafts this year. 35:25 - Ed also loves Link Jackson's Stream Tech Rafts. It's a Maravia boat too. 39:50 - Ed talks about carp fishing 41:00 - Bass fishing is consistent in McCall fisheries, especially in the summer. There are some tiger muskies there too. Ed chooses bass over trout because he wants to get away from the crowd. 45:55 - Ray Troll, who is also a fish artist, was on the podcast at WFS 299 46:30 - We dig into Ed's art. You can check out his artwork on his Instagram at @edandersonart 48:20 - Ed created multiple cover artwork for Gray's Sporting Journal 49:30 - Ed and I met through Nick Torres of Waterworks Lamson. People who seriously hunt western upland game birds are tough, and Matt Hardinge is the kind of guy who can handle pain and suffering. Chasing a chukar thousands of vertical feet up a canyon, only to have it fly back down before you catch up, is a lesson in patience and endurance. Not only is Matt chasing chukar in Hells Canyon, but he's also successfully hunting the toughest bird out there, the Himalayan snowcock. With the only U.S. population living in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, these birds are reputed to be the most elusive game on earth. In this episode, Matt gives me some tips on how to hunt them, and how you can learn more about this fascinating species. Matt on Instagram

In this episode of The Freeflow Podcast, CMarie Fuhrman reads a new iteration of her essay, “Hells Canyon Revival,” which was first published in 2017. CMarie's story takes us to Hells Canyon on the Snake River, where she explores several dualities with her characteristically thoughtful prose. She considers the art and cultural histories that are buried beneath impounded water, the limitations of language, and one ancient salmon hidden behind bars, high above the waterline. CMarie's essay is a personal account of her relationship to the Snake River, the tension within the landscape and its history, and her place within its remaining wildness. After her reading of "Hells Canyon Revival," CMarie discusses the myriad binaries within the narrative and her own complicated history of relationship to rivers. When it comes to flying the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Hells Canyon, Joe Spence is a local legend. Joe knew he wanted to be a pilot since he was 5 years old, and in 1978, he joined the Joseph Flyers Club and started training. Over the course of his career, he has logged about 20,000 flight hours. This man has literally spent over two years of his life in the air. Operating a Cessna 206 and a Piper Cub, Joe has done countless game census flights, trained a lot of pilots, and saved numerous people injured in the backcountry. There are people behind the curtain, they are very friendly and shared with The River Radius information to help all of us better understand the why and the how of the river permit systems. Hells Canyon Massacre On the Oregon-Idaho border, along a desolate and remote part of the Snake River lies as what is now known as Chinese Massacre Cove, a name given to it from an event back in May 1887. It's a dusty river bank that's located in the middle of Hells Canyon. Many Chinese immigrants who came to the United States during the 19th century would make their way to the American West. They faced considerable discrimination along with challenging working conditions as most became laborers and miners. They'd often find themselves working land that other miners wouldn't want to. This story is disturbing and horrofic for the victims. Wichita Horror It would start on December 7th, 2000 in Wichita, KS where 22 year old Reginald Carr and his 20 year old brother Jonathan Carr would begin their brutal crimes in Wichita, Kansas. The account of their murderous rampage is one of horror. Presented, produced and edited by The Wild 1 Media - www.thewild1media.com
For the uninitiated, a healthy dose of preparation—both mental and physical—will go a long way toward making the most of your efforts. Going to Hells Canyon once does not make anyone an expert. If anything, it just exposes how little you actually know about how to hunt this canyon. It is from that humble perspective that I offer a few tips to anyone considering a first-time hunt here.

We're going to be meeting around the campfire this week with The Purists: Tom Loy and Randy Schertz! These are today's version of true Wild-West upland hunting Texas Rangers. You will be captivated as we explore a wide open country hunting style of western upland birds that is foreign to most sportsmen. In this episode we talk about Hungarian Partridges, Sharptails, and Chukars and finding them in places like Hells Canyon and Never-Ending Valley. Tom and Randy have cultivated their own strain of Gordon Setters that range way out in front 300-1000 yards like cavalry scouts scouring the range in search of their quarries. Hear how they cover 10-15 miles a day in search of elusive Huns or runaway Chukars and why it's exhilarating to do so. This is an opportunity to hear from decades of experience hunting the wild wild west behind talented pointing breeds in concert with their hunter, using the latest technologies. We call these Wild West Upland Heroes "The Purists", and it won't take you long to see why. So grab a chair and sit with us by the fire as we listen to this exceptional podcast from The Purists themselves! This week, the vacation comes to you! We've got excellent road trips to some of the most beautiful and inspiring parts of Oregon and the creators who work there. Pack up, grab a bag of sunflower seeds — we're hitting the road.Veterans Chase Rock 'n' Roll Ceramics And Granite Peaks at the LH ProjectThere are a lot of reasons to visit Joseph, Oregon, beginning with the spectacular Wallowa Mountains. But for ceramic artists, there’s one very specific reason: a residency program that some have called the Shangri-la of ceramics. It was started by Jakob Haßlacher and his wife, the internationally renowned sculptor Chris Antemann, in 2000. Haßlacher named it after his family's cattle brand, the LH Project, and now they invite ceramic artists from around the world to make art there. One group comes back every summer: veterans, who crank the stereo and let the beer flow more freely than the glaze.Wallowa County Writer's First Book Recounts True Love Found Around A Campfire in Hells Canyon - 10:57Pamela Royes debut book, "Temperance Creek: A Memoir," explores her early adult years in Northeastern Oregon in the Wallowa Mountains. That's where she met her future husband, Skip Royes, a Vietnam war veteran, while backpacking. He asked her to join him, and her lyrical writing sensibility brings to life what it was like sheep herding in Hells Canyon for four years, living off the land with a man who went from a stranger on the trail to her husband for forty years.Disjecta's 'Portland2016' Biennial Creates The Ultimate Art Road Trip - 20:07The mother of all summertime art road trips is here. In thirteen cities, artwork will be on view this summer representing Oregon’s contemporary art scene for Disjecta’s biennial show "Portland2016." Curator Michelle Grabner, who curated the 2014 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial, spent last fall and winter getting to know Oregon artists through a mind-bending 107 studio visits. We joined Grabner at several stages in her process, from studio visits to artists installing their work in an abandoned hotel in Astoria. New Capacity Building Initiative Helps Arts Organizations Think Big - 36:20It’s really tough for arts organizations to think big when they’re so married to a regular cycle of ticket sales, grants, and courting donors. We recently sat down with Steve Moore, executive director of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, to talk about a recently completed initiative to help arts organizations like Disjecta do bigger and better projects. It's called Capacity Building, and the endgame is to get those arts organizations into more long-term, sustainable planning.Skyscrapers In Portland: The Sky's The Limit? - 39:54Portland is growing up. Fast. More than 60 buildings over 100-feet tall are in the pipeline, along with a few towering higher than 200 feet. Downtown’s largest property owner, the Goodman family, recently made a highly speculative proposal for four new towers that could rise as high as 460 feet. Our architecture and urban design columnist-in-residence, Randy Gragg, talked with the architects of three of the most prominent new buildings: Park Avenue West, the Cosmopolitan, and Indigo @ twelve|west. We have drone videos of the buildings, along with an extended interview with Randy and the architects, here.Exploring Color, Space And Memory Through 'The Color Of Memory' - 49:55The memories you make this summer — at the beach, with friends — will be full of light and color. But how will those colors stay with you down the road? Will they stay bright, or fade like beach towels left a little too long in the sun? There’s a show now on view called “The Color of Memory” at Jeffrey Thomas Fine Art in Northwest Portland, running through Aug. 27, that explores issues of memory through the work of 16 West Coast artists, who emphasize or deny color in their work.
