Year C – Third Sunday in Easter – May 4, 2025 Pastor Megan Floyd John 21:1-19; Acts 9:1-20 Grace and peace to you in the name of our risen savior, Jesus Christ, who knows we are not perfect, and yet still calls us daily to follow. Amen. *** I love a good redemption story. A classic tale of an evil villain… or even… a more relatable character who has unfortunately made terrible choices… They recognize the error of their ways, and their life is transformed. My top guy is probably Ebenezer Scrooge… and yes, I'm talking about A Christmas Carol …during the Easter season… A few years ago, a movie called Spirited came out… a story with Ebenezer Scrooge working away in the afterlife to bring such a transformation to others who have gone astray. He was paying it forward, if you will Delightfully funny movie… and it raised a good question… when someone has seen the error of their ways, and changed their behavior… do they change permanently? … does that transformed life… stick around? Everything is set right… the book ends or the credits roll… but would Ebenezer still have his generous Christmas spirit when Easter came around? …what happens six months later when life throws some challenges… what happens when that moment of realization and commitment to change is a faded memory… and we fall back into old habits? These stories of redemption tend to hook our imagination… because they are so relatable… so human. All of us have made mistakes… every single one of us has done things we later wish we had done differently… …the things we could have said in a kinder way… the times we wish we had stopped to help instead of tucking our head and walking by. We need to believe that there is hope for us… if Ebenezer can turn his life around… so can we. If Jesus still calls Peter to follow him… still calls Peter into discipleship after how badly he messed up… then perhaps Jesus is still calling us. Peter followed Jesus for three years… he pledged his life to Jesus… He tried to give his life defending Jesus in the garden when he drew his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest's slave. And yet… only a short while later… around that charcoal fire outside the courtyard of the high priest… when it seemed they had lost… Peter denied ever having known Jesus… Three times he said… I do not know the man. And then the cock crowed… and Peter realized what just happened… and that Jesus knew he would fail him… I can only imagine how deeply that must have gutted Peter. And I bet seeing Jesus appear to them in the locked room only made it worse… it would have only highlighted Peter's lack of faith… He was wrong… they had not lost… and so his shame at his three-fold denial… would have been bone-deep. Can anyone really blame him for going fishing? But then… just as Jesus found him three years ago… Jesus finds him again. Seated at a charcoal fire… Jesus is there, cooking them breakfast. This scene… I love it. This is the Jesus I know… not a distant, unattached God in the sky watching over us… but… my Lord and my God, meeting me in the ordinary days of my life. Jesus… meeting me in the moments when I feel like the world has turned upside down. Jesus… saying to me… come and sit… let's share a meal. Things have gone a bit sideways for you… I know… but come… and let me remind you of my love. And how do they know that it's Jesus? …because of the abundance! …the great haul of fish… the grace upon grace. Around that charcoal fire on the beach, Jesus offers Peter another chance… Peter, do you love me… Yes, Lord… Then feed my lambs. Peter, do you love me… Yes, Lord… Then tend my sheep. Peter, do you love me… Yes, Lord, I love you… you know everything, and you know that I love you… Then feed my sheep… and follow me. The crucified and risen Jesus Christ tells Peter… and tells us… I've already taken into account your shortcomings… and still, I am calling you… come, and follow me. Jesus came so that we might have life, and have it abundantly… so don't think for a minute that Jesus can't work with what you've got. Just consider what Jesus has already done… In the great reversal of death's power, Jesus has transformed the dreadful cross and tomb into a sign of forgiveness and love… a sign of redemption… Jesus transforms Peter, a three-fold deserter… into a shepherd of Christ's people. And shortly after, Jesus transforms Saul, a murderous persecutor… into a champion for the Way of Christ. Jesus knows our failings… and still loves us… forgives us… and calls us to follow… to put that love into action, and to feed and tend his sheep… the people of the world whom God so loves. Jesus calls us into a transformed and joyous life… life with our Lord and our God by our side And yet… even after encountering Jesus in our lives… we sometimes drift away… we might pull away from Jesus and drift back into our old ways. …or perhaps… we may even admit that we are a little afraid of what the power of a new life with the risen Christ might mean… and so we deny we ever knew him. It's that question that the movie Spirited asked… what happens down the road… is the transformation lasting and permanent? Is Ebenezer still as generous at Easter as he was on Christmas Day? If it were only up to us and our own willpower, then I'd say no… we cannot secure our own redemption… the kind that leads to true transformation. But fortunately… our redemption is not from within us… it comes from the crucified and risen Jesus. Jesus, who knows our faults and our failings, and calls us anyway to follow him daily… Jesus calls us to receive grace upon grace…. and allow the redemptive power of a living Christ transform our lives with love… to transform us anew, each and every day. Our redemption is permanent… a once-and-done experience… we are forgiven and redeemed by the grace of the risen Jesus Christ… But our life with Jesus… our encounters with Christ… that is not one-and-done. Our experience of meeting Jesus in our ordinary… our good days and our bad… of sharing a meal… that is an ongoing experience. An ongoing relationship, rooted in love and grace… a relationship that deepens and matures over time… It's a relationship that calls to you every single day, even after we may have drifted away… even after we have made mistakes. So come and have some breakfast with Jesus… and receive Christ's transformational love for you… It is… the best redemption story there is. Amen.
On Sunday we continued in our series on the 7 signs of Jesus in John's gospel. Josh Moxon spoke on the third sign in John 5:1-15 on the healing at the pool of Bethesda.
Did Peter Deny Jesus Three Times? Matthew 26:69-72 NKJV VERSE 69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.” VERSE 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.” VERSE 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.” VERSE 72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man! 73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” 74 Then he began to [a]curse and [b]swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly. #theapostles #thedisciples #jesus #bibleverse #biblequestionsandanswers --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/biblequestionsandanswers/support

Have you ever wondered about the calculus of Jesus' "sign of Jonah" statement? Jesus said, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" (Matthew 12:40 WEB). This is usually understood as referring to Jesus' time in the tomb, but this interpretation runs into some obvious difficulties. The gospels leave a very plain record that Jesus was buried Friday evening soon before the Sabbath and that he was resurrected early Sunday morning. That's a span of about 36 hours, which is only half of "three days and three nights," which is 72 hours. So, the suggestion that the "three days and three nights in the heart of the earth" refers to Jesus' time in the grave, simply doesn't match the facts of Jesus' burial and resurrection. In our study today, we look at an article by J.N. Andrews from "The Present Truth," December 1849, in which he comments on the phrase "the heart of the earth," gives reason why the common interpretation isn't correct, and then explains what it really means. Jesus is God. If that statement is true, why did it take Him 3 days to rise from the dead? He is God and could have risen immediately. Or he could have survived the crucifixion. That would have been amazing and unheard of. It definitely would have gone down in history. There are a few reasons why Jesus allowed His earthly body to remain dead for three days. One of them is due to the fact that once a person was dead for three days, everyone knew, and accepted that the person was not coming back. They weren't sleeping, in a coma, passed out, et cetera. That person was 3-days-dead. They were dead, dead. Beyond that "earthly" reason, there were some spiritual reasons Jesus took three days to rise. What are they? Tune in to this week's sermon to find out! #02: Queer-o-Vision 18:36 - Gustaph (Eurovision Contestant, 2023, Representing Belgium) 35:18 Robin de Jesus (Three time Tony Nominated actor, Netflix's tick…tick..BOOM!, Hulu's Welcome to Chippendales) There's always been something a little queer about Eurovision. In our second episode, we explore the contest's history with the LGBTQ+ community– and how this “family show” has, at many points in its nearly 70 year existence, been way out front on LGBT rights issues. We also discuss the moments when the contest hasn't lived up to its image. We then talk to Gustaph, who, as a teen, left a promising career as a popstar in Belgium because of pressure to stay in the closet– only to emerge two decades later on the world's largest stage with a song that's unabashedly queer. The surprise hit of Eurovision this year, it catapulted to the top ten after being placed toward the bottom in the betting markets. We discuss how Gustaph's out and proud second act reflects a radically changed culture, and the ways in which homophobia, now subtler, seeps into both the fandom and supposedly “aesthetic” criticism. Tony nominated American actor Robin de Jesus then stops by to play a game of “Gay or Eurovision.” As he guesses whether a number is performed by a queer artist, or if its queer aesthetics are just part of the Eurovision brand; we talk about the evolution of queer style and queer music in a time of expanding rights and mainstreaming of the community. And that conversation sounds gay to you— you have no idea how gay it gets. On Sunday, April 30, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice led us through an exploration of three themes found in this passage. 1) The key to Jesus' life and ministry was prayer, submitting himself to God his Father. 2) When Jesus had important decisions, he would spend the night in prayer. Jesus' example is saying to God, “Not my will, but yours be done.” 3) The decision in this passage was for the Twelve Disciples, but we discover that we are chosen by God in Christ when people have prayed for us to know Jesus. Prayer is the key to bringing our loved ones into God's family.Luke 6:12-16 (NIV)One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.https://bit.ly/Luke6_1-11NIV

Episode Type: Special Edition Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way Forward. In this discussion episode, part 4, we're reflecting on Peter's Denial of Jesus while Jesus is being interrogated by the religious leaders after Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested, and hours after Jesus' agonizing moment of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. In this conversation about the passage describing Peter's denial of Jesus, we'll first read and discuss my harmonization of the story from the different accounts of Jesus' life with quotes from the New Living Translation of the Bible. Then, we'll explore the story through the following questions: What we can learn about Jesus, humanity, and ourselves from this monumental moment in time? How does this event apply to our lives today? This particular moment begins soon after Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. Peter is watching the interrogated Jesus in the courtyard from a distance. Fellow Conversation Participants Today I'm joined by Addison, Allen, and Jim. Have you had the experience of crying out to God for many years, and then as the busy-ness of life takes over, the cry is still there, but not so loud? Then one day you have this moment, where the Holy Spirit nudges you and says, 'Look.' You look and see that God is answering that prayer. A smile comes over your face, and your heart feels full. The blindness of busy-ness is lifted. The blindness of busy-ness When this recently happened to me, I started thinking about how we often get so focused on other things, that we miss what God is doing. Proverbs 29:18 in The Message Bible says ... If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed. Proverbs 29:18 The Message When I obeyed the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and looked and saw what God was doing, I did indeed feel and know that I was most blessed. The Amplified Bible says Proverbs 29:18 this way, Where there is no vision [no revelation of God and His word], the people are unrestrained; But happy and blessed is he who keeps the law [of God]. Proverbs 29:18 AMP Ummm ... No revelation of God and His word ... the people are unrestrained... The blindness in our thinking Let's look at this scripture for a moment in the context of our thought-life. That is, when our thoughts are not focused on God's truth they can wander wherever they desire. This happens when we are not actively taking our thoughts captive, as God says to do in 2 Corinthians 10:5. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV This is another blindness, not towards what God is doing, but in relation to what we are thinking! Negative thoughts causing blindness I experienced this type of blindness recently when I let negative thoughts overwhelm me. They caused me to lose sight of God's word. I couldn't see the good. I couldn't see a positive path forward. The story Over the past month our daughter has had nine medical appointments in relation to her left leg, and there are two more this coming week. Attending all these appointments brought back the memories of the multiple hospital visits from her time of having chemotherapy treatment. Late last week, both my daughter and I were at the point of sighing, crying and thinking, 'No, not another appointment,' and 'Will it always be like this?' So strong is the emotional pull of old memories and feelings of despair - grief. For our daughter during recent years the negative experiences around these ongoing appointments have been offset by the joy and excitement of swimming training and competing at sporting events. But due to COVID-19 restrictions and other factors beyond our control, those activities are currently not happening. So, the question she now often asks is, 'What is there to look forward to?' What is there to look forward to? What is there to look forward to? Yes, blindness can stop us looking forward and it can stop us looking to Jesus. The blind beggar These thoughts about blindness led me to reading the story of Jesus healing the blind beggar Bartimaeus, recounted in Mark 10 and Luke 18. Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a great crowd, a blind beggar, Bartimaeus, a son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have pity and mercy on me [now]! And many severely censured and reproved him, telling him to keep still, but he kept on shouting out all the more, You Son of David, have pity and mercy on me [now]!" And Jesus stopped and said, Call him. And they called the blind man, telling him, Take courage! Get up! He is calling you. And throwing off his outer garment, he leaped up and and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, What do you want Me to do for you? And the blind man said to Him, Master, let me receive my sight. And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has healed you. And at once he receive his sight and accompanied Jesus on the road. Mark 10:46-52 AMPC What did God speak to you about as we read that story? For me, there were four things which I share below. But first, lets give thanks for the revelation God brings to us through His word. Remember Proverbs 29:18 that we read earlier, Where there is no vision [no revelation of God and His word], the people are unrestrained; But happy and blessed is he who keeps the law [of God]. Proverbs 29:18 AMP Keep asking. Don't give up Firstly, Bartimaeus called out to Jesus not once, but twice. He didn't give up. Interestingly when this story is recounted in Luke, earlier in Chapter 18, Jesus is teaching the disciples about prayer, saying, Don't you know that God, the true judge, will grant justice to all of his chosen ones who cry out to him night and day? He will pour out his Spirit upon them. He will not delay to answer you and give you what you ask for. God will give swift justice to those who don't give up. So be ever praying, ever expecting, just like the widow was with the judge. Luke 18:7-8a TPT Jesus finishes this teaching about prayer with this question, a challenge to me and you ... Yet when the Son of Man comes back, will he find this kind of persistent faithfulness in his people? Luke 18:8b TPT Revelation (or reminder) Keep calling out to Jesus. Let's be people of persistent faith. Courage to respond Secondly, when Jesus responded to the blind beggar's call, it appears from the disciple's words that Bartimaeus was a little hesitant to go to Jesus. So they went to the blind man and said, "Have courage! Get up! Jesus is calling for you!" Mark 10:49 TPT As we know Bartimaeus did muster the courage, get up and go to Jesus. Imagine if he hadn't. He would have missed that opportunity to receive healing. The Message Bible says, They called him. "It's your lucky day! Get up! He's calling you to come!" Mark 10:49 The Message His lucky day indeed! Revelation (or reminder) Sometimes it takes courage to respond to what Jesus asks us to do, but that is part of the faith adventure. Note: there is a great song that reminds me to take courage: Take Courage by Kristine DiMarco. Throw off the old cloak Thirdly, look what Bartimeaus did when he responded to Jesus ... And throwing off his outer garment, he leaped up and came to Jesus. Luke 10:50 AMPC It seems like, that to get up, Bartimeaus had to throw off something - his outer garment. The Passion Translation says, So he threw off his beggars' cloak, jumped up, and made his way to Jesus. Luke 10:50 TPT He had to throw off the cloak that represented his old life, before he could receive the new life Jesus had for him. Revelation (or reminder) This was one of the main points of the story God wanted me to understand. I had to throw off the old memories of years of medical appointments. I had to take those thoughts captive and remind myself that we are in a new season now. This is not the past. God is doing a new thing. Some serious talk to self, declaring God's truth and promises was required. For both me, but for our daughter. Confidence in Jesus' power Finally, Bartimaeus had confidence that Jesus could make him well. Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith [and confident trust in My power] has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and began following Jesus on the road. Mark 10:52 AMP So a question for us, "Who or what are we putting our confidence in today?" Revelation (or reminder) There is only one answer -> Jesus. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life." John 14:6 NKJV The Blindness and Jesus So just remember to keep a look out for blindness in your life. The blindness of busy-ness can cause us to miss seeing what God is doing in our lives. The blindness of negative thinking can stop us looking to Jesus, the One we need to have our confidence in. The importance of confidence in Jesus Three final thoughts on the importance of confidence in Jesus, and accompanying scripture, because remember what the Amplified Bible says in Proverbs 29:18. Where there is no vision [no revelation of God and His word], the people are unrestrained; But happy and blessed is he who keeps the law [of God]. Proverbs 29:18 AMP 1. We need to have confidence that with Jesus we can do all things. I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfil His purpose - I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.] Philippians 4:13 AMP 2. We need to have confidence that with Jesus we can more than overcome. Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37 NKJV 3. And when we can't find that confidence, we need to remember. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power my rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9-11 NIV To find out more please visit https://wendyrobinson.com.au
2 Peter 1:1-4 God Gives Great Gifts! - Bill J Last week, we took a little look back at 1st Peter and ahead to 2nd Peter. 1st Peter looked at trials coming from OUTSIDE the Church. Stand firm in God’s Grace! 2nd Peter looks at trials coming from INSIDE the Church. Stand firm in God’s Truth! Peter was aware that this was going to be his last message. ~ He would soon be martyred for his faith. Jesus had told him it was how he would die! Nero was Emperor and persecution of Christians was rampant. The thing that he wanted to make sure they, and we get is that the church stayed diligent to not allow any other gospel to be preached... NO variation from what they were taught. False teachers and False teaching were already deceiving many... Don’t be deceived!!! 2nd Peter in a nutshell: IF our Faith in Christ is real, and we stay Focused on Him, it will be evident in our behavior. IF we continue to grow and mature in our faith and knowledge of Christ; We are transformed by the Spirit of God and we won’t be deceived by false teachers or false teaching! With that backdrop, let’s jump into 2nd Peter! 2 Peter 1:1-4nlt ~ This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. 2 May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 2 Peter 1:1 ~ This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. Notice Peter refers to himself as Simon Peter. Simon being his birth name, and “Peter” (Gk. petros meaning Rock / Stone) being the name given to him by Jesus. There was significance in his names... It’s like Simon had a permanent case of “Foot in Mouth” disease. He made promises he couldn’t keep. He’d jump into something with both feet, then be the first one to back out... It seems like Jesus changed Simon’s name because He wanted his new name to be a perpetual reminder to him about who he could be. From that point on, whatever Jesus called him sent him a subtle message. If He called him Simon, He was signaling him that he was acting like his old self. If He called him Peter / Rock, He was commending him for acting the way he should. The Lord could correct or commend him just by using one name or the other. Peter used “Simon Peter” to show both his broken side and his rock-solid side. He knew the fullness of His guilt and sin. He knew the weight of shame. But he also knew the sufficiency of God’s Grace! He didn’t pretend or deny his faults... Peter knew it was only by God’s Grace that he was an Apostle of Jesus Christ! Peter KNEW he had denied knowing Jesus ~ THREE times! Shortly after proclaiming he would NEVER fall away... Peter KNEW it was Jesus that restored him! He called Himself a Slave and Apostle of Jesus Christ! A Slave, because Peter had died to his will and his ways! No rights, No will of his own! An Apostle because of the grace of God! Jesus said in Matt 6:24 ~ No man can serve two masters... a more literal translation would be “No man can be a slave to two masters”... it’s the same Gk word doulos! It’s why Peter, James, Jude & Paul, all identified themselves as Slaves of Christ ~ They knew who they were and knew who they had become, and it wasn’t about them anymore...

On Good Friday, we are reminded of three three-word messages: “I love you”, God shows his great love at the cross (Romans 5:8); “It is finished”, by faith our sins are paid in full; “I will return” to take us to be with him (John 14:1-6).
The King of Kings: John 19:1-16 How do you respond to Jesus? Three possible ways are given from this passage, and it might serve as a warning call to how we should respond!
When Jesus gathered His twelve disciples to Himself at Caesarea Philippi in Matthew 16:13-23, He asked them two very important questions…who did the people say that He was and who did they think that He was? While they answered these questions well, God the Father also had something to add as revealed in Matthew 17:1-9. […]
