Sabbath and the People of God Thomas Robinson, Luke: Anointed with God's Spirit 15, November 7, 2021 Luke6:1-16 Trans.TR Jesus' Disciples Pick Grain on the Sabbath 1 And it happened one Sabbath, that Jesus was walking through the standing grain, and his disciples started plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 Now, some of the Pharisees asked them, “Why are you doing what's not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 Then in response Jesus asked them, “Didn't you ever read what David did when he himself was hungry, along with those with him? 4 How he entered into the house of God, and then taking the Loaves of the Presentation, he ate them and gave to those with him [1 Sam 21:1-6]. And it's not lawful for any to eat those loaves, except only the priests?” 5 And he used to say to them, “The Son of the Human is Lord of the Sabbath.” Jesus Restores a Man's Crippled Hand on the Sabbath 6 And it happened on another Sabbath, that he entered the synagogue and was teaching. Now a man was there, and his right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees were closely watching Jesus, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, because they wanted to find a reason to accuse him. 8 Now he himself understood their ways of reasoning, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the center.” And he rose and stood. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I'm asking all of you, whether it's lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But these men were filled with mindless fury and they began talking intensely with each other what they might do to Jesus. Jesus Names Twelve Disciples as Emissaries 12 And it happened during these days that he went out onto the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in that prayer with God. 13 Then, when day came, he called together his disciples and selected twelve of them, and these he designated “apostles”: 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter (“Rock”), and Andrew his brother, and James (Jacob) and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called a zealot, 16 and Judas (Judah) the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a betrayer. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Exodus 20:8-11 From the Ten Commandments 8 Remember the Sabbath day, and consecrate it. 9 Six days you shall serve and do all your labor/occupation. 10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God; you shall not do any of your labor – you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day. Therefore, Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it. [Gn 1:1 – 2:3]

Today's Gospel features one of the most beloved and important passages to Catholics, where Jesus names Peter "Rock" (the name Peter itself is a translation into English of the Greek word for rock) and declares that the church will be built upon him. Furthermore, and more radically, Jesus tells Peter that to him are given "the keys to the kingdom of heaven" -- keys being a symbol of authority. And then he tells Peter, "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." So Jesus is giving Peter the authority to act and decide in Jesus's name. And this is precisely what we believe the current Holy Father to be (Pope Francis or whomever it is at the time): the Successor of Peter -- the guarantor of the fidelity of the teachings of the Church to Christ -- and the secure foundation upon which our Church -- and our faith -- rests. Let us pray for the grace to be obedient to this authority which Christ Himself has given!

2 Peter 1:1-4 God Gives Great Gifts! - Bill J Last week, we took a little look back at 1st Peter and ahead to 2nd Peter. 1st Peter looked at trials coming from OUTSIDE the Church. Stand firm in God’s Grace! 2nd Peter looks at trials coming from INSIDE the Church. Stand firm in God’s Truth! Peter was aware that this was going to be his last message. ~ He would soon be martyred for his faith.  Jesus had told him it was how he would die! Nero was Emperor and persecution of Christians was rampant.     The thing that he wanted to make sure they, and we get is that the church stayed diligent to not allow any other gospel to be preached...  NO variation from what they were taught.   False teachers and False teaching were already deceiving many... Don’t be deceived!!! 2nd Peter in a nutshell: IF our Faith in Christ is real, and we stay Focused on Him, it will be evident in our behavior.   IF we continue to grow and mature in our faith and knowledge of Christ; We are transformed by the Spirit of God and we won’t be deceived by false teachers or false teaching! With that backdrop, let’s jump into 2nd Peter! 2 Peter 1:1-4nlt ~ This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. 2 May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 2 Peter 1:1 ~ This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. Notice Peter refers to himself as Simon Peter.  Simon being his birth name, and “Peter” (Gk. petros meaning Rock / Stone) being the name given to him by Jesus.   There was significance in his names... It’s like Simon had a permanent case of “Foot in Mouth” disease.   He made promises he couldn’t keep.   He’d jump into something with both feet, then be the first one to back out...   It seems like Jesus changed Simon’s name because He wanted his new name to be a perpetual reminder to him about who he could be.  From that point on, whatever Jesus called him sent him a subtle message.  If He called him Simon, He was signaling him that he was acting like his old self.  If He called him Peter / Rock, He was commending him for acting the way he should. The Lord could correct or commend him just by using one name or the other. Peter used “Simon Peter” to show both his broken side and his rock-solid side.   He knew the fullness of His guilt and sin. He knew the weight of shame. But he also knew the sufficiency of God’s Grace!  He didn’t pretend or deny his faults... Peter knew it was only by God’s Grace that he was an Apostle of Jesus Christ! Peter KNEW he had denied knowing Jesus ~ THREE times! Shortly after proclaiming he would NEVER fall away... Peter KNEW it was Jesus that restored him! He called Himself a Slave and Apostle of Jesus Christ! A Slave, because Peter had died to his will and his ways! No rights, No will of his own! An Apostle because of the grace of God! Jesus said in Matt 6:24 ~ No man can serve two masters... a more literal translation would be “No man can be a slave to two masters”... it’s the same Gk word doulos!  It’s why Peter, James, Jude & Paul, all identified themselves as Slaves of Christ ~ They knew who they were and knew who they had become, and it wasn’t about them anymore...

Yes, I love interviews. But I love the Bible too because in some ways reading and discovering God’s word is like sitting down to interview Jesus. If you watch, listen, ask questions, you’ll discover what I mean. Anyway, today we kick off The Simple Man’s Bible Study Rock The World Part 1. Which is a simple/clever (ish) way of saying we are going to experience Jesus through the eyes and experiences of Peter (see, his nickname Peter = Rock, and so Rock the World? No? Yes? Maybe?). Today we talk about nicknames. You’ll see. Or hear. Some of my favorite nicknames are hockey nicknames: Grimmer. Binner. Legde or as I call him Luh-Legend. What’s your nickname? As I have said here before, one of the things I like best about doing the Writerscast interviews is that it’s introduced me to the work of many writers I would not have discovered on my own. The Night Swimmers is a perfect example. Peter Rock has been writing extremely fine fiction for many years, and yet I had never run across his work before, which still seems quite surprising to me, given the nature of his work.

The Major Scale gives a wink and a nod to Tom Scott and some of his early work. Before Scott was topping the charts with music for Tom Cat, L.A. Express with Joni Mitchell, along with scoring for film and TV- Starsky And Hutch, Let's Do It Again, and Family Ties, he was a teenage prodigy who was signed to Impulse Records – the home of his hero John Coltrane among other legends. Although these first albums weren't as popular as his later releases, over the past couple of decades they've become fertile ground for sampling - Massive Attack, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Hieroglyphics and countless others have rearranged his work to great heights. We talk with the man himself about this phenomenon – easily one of our most entertaining conversations yet! SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF:  Rural Still life #26 by Tom Scott (from the album "Rural Still Life" on Impulse Records). Milestones by Oliver Nelson (from the album "Live In Los Angeles" on Impulse Records). Spells (Counterpoint Press) Acclaimed author Peter Rock’s interest in using images for storytelling began while working as a security guard in an art museum. Twenty years later, reminded of the stories he created from the photographs and images he saw on the job, he began to envision a similar project—a project for which he received a Guggenheim scholarship, and which eventually became Spells: A Novel Within Photographs. First, he asked five photographers he admired to send him images. Then, he used those images as a foundation for his writing—a ship in a lit window gives hope to a dark night, a pair of shadow hands fumble to make a duck or a dog. From a collection of diverse images Rock builds a single narrative that effortlessly weaves between the specific and the universal, dream and reality, prose and poetry. As he explains: “The images came first. One way to think of it is that the stories herein, and the larger story they become, were already embedded in the photographs. My attention and intuition acted as a kind of excavation that brought them to the surface, into words.” The texts range from narrative to prose poem, from folktale to rant to reverie to an essay written by a fourth grader. The overarching story follows three friends who have recently graduated from high school; it explores their relationships and how things change when they become entangled with an elderly widower who claims to have dreamt of one of them. The ensuing drama explores the relationship between dreams and waking life, between the head and the heart, between shadows and their bodies, between the living and the dead. Peter Rock was born and raised in Salt Lake City. His most recent novel is Klickitat (Abrams 2016). He is also the author of six other novels, includingThe Shelter Cycle (2013) and My Abandonment (2009), as well as a collection of stories, The Unsettling (2006). The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, an Alex Award and others, he currently resides in Portland, Oregon, where he is a Professor at Reed College. His novel-within-photographs, Spells, was shown at Blue Sky Gallery in 2015 and is currently traveling around Oregon.

Each of us pictures ourselves in an idea of who we are...our self-identity….and we try instinctively to live within this self-identity. We try to live as who we conceive ourselves to be. And this is good because most of us would like to think we are super heroes as opposed to super villians. We have expectations of ourselves driven by our self-identity. Who do you think you are? Have you ever disappointed yourself? What did you do? What happened? How did you feel? Did it perhaps shake up your self-identity? Tonight, we look at these things under the cross.

The Miracle Girl(Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill) The crowds keep coming. More and more every day it seems . . . drawn by rumor and whisper and desperate wish. Somehow they heard about the little girl on Shaker Street. They come to see eight-year-old Anabelle Vincent, who lies in a comalike state--unable to move or speak. They come because a visitor experienced what seemed like a miracle and believed it was because of Anabelle. Word spread. There were more visitors. More miracles. But is there a connection? And does it matter? Set against the backdrop of the approaching millennium--with all its buzz about reckoning and doom--this impressive debut novel is narrated by Anabelle herself; by her devoted mother, who cares for her child while struggling to make sense of the media frenzy surrounding her; by Anabelle's estranged father, who is dealing with the guilt of his actions; and by the people who come seeking the child's help, her guidance, and her healing. Yet it tells a larger cultural story about the human yearning for the miraculous to be true, about how becoming a believer--in something, anything, even if you don't understand it--can sustain you. Praise forThe Miracle Girl: "To believe or not to believe--that is the question facing all who are touched by the comatose 'miracle girl' at the swirling center ofAndrew Roe'sdazzling debut. But more than an exploration of the mysteries of faith, it's also the unforgettable story of one family's struggle against tragedy. The result is an uplifting miracle of a book." --Will Allison, author ofLong Drive Home "InThe Miracle Girl, we're reminded that the desire for miracles always connotes dissatisfaction, even as it articulates a hope. Roe deftly explores this paradox . . . [and] examines the strange responsibility of being believed in. A stunning, confident debut." --Peter Rock, author ofThe Shelter Cycle "An incisive and insightful critique of America, investigating where we put our faith and why . . . It's a novel about what it means to be human, to be lost or broken, a little or a lot, and to seek connection and hope and maybe even transcendence in the world around us." --Doug Dorst, author ofS. andAlive in Necropolis Born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Whittier, California,Andrew Roehas had his fiction published inTin House, One Story, theSun, Glimmer Train, The Cincinnati Review, Slice, Pank, Avery Anthology, Gigantic, Freight Stories, Failbetter, theGood Men Project, and other literary magazines, as well as the anthologiesWhere Love Is Foundand24 Bar Blues. His nonfiction has appeared in theNew York Times, San Francisco Chronicle,Salon.com,SF Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and elsewhere. Christ. If we are to find and stay on the right path that leads to heaven, this is a truth that we must come to embrace. In a passage from Matthew's Gospel, Jesus explains to His apostles that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer at the hands of the authorities… that He will need to lay down His life. Peter, so like many in the world – maybe like you and like me – has a different view. Peter objects to what he hears and the Gospel tells us that he takes Jesus aside and actually rebukes Him! And so, Jesus who had just previously called Peter Rock now addresses him as Satan. Jesus accuses Peter of thinking like human beings and not as God. He speaks of the necessity of the Cross
